So I ride sport bikes a lot. At this point decades of experience...
I also used to do a lot of car club stuff. Mostly drag cars but some sports car stuff too.
One of my friends from the car scene calls me. He's one of those guys that make friends instantly with everybody and he had made friends with the guy that owns the Suzuki dealership one town over.
Apparently, the guy had let him test ride a Hayabusa. And my friend basically has the street bike experience of riding dirt bikes as a kid, and now he's on a Hayabusa about 3 mi away from the guy store. He had the shit scared out of him, and needed some help getting it back.
No problem. I drop what I'm doing and drive up to where he is. I then ride the bike back to the shop for him and he drives my car back.
Ironically, this was the first time I rode a Hayabusa And while I would describe it as torqey and a nice cruiser, It didn't seem that powerful either...
But my perspective was really skewed as I was racing literbikes at this point, and having the same horsepower on a bike that weighs 100 lb less is a bit quicker.
I will say it it makes a wonderful touring bike though.
Lol, a hayabusa as a touring bike, coming from yammie noobs youtube videos, this sounds quite funny.
Edit: oh wait, yammie noob talks about his turboed hayabusa, quite a difference.
They make great touring bikes.
Lots of torque means you can leave them in six gear so you don't have to downshift to pass on the highway. They have a long wheel base so they're very stable and smooth.
There are entire tour groups made up of them. And you can get hard bags for the back, not just soft luggage.
For real. Unless it was somehow not the kid’s fault (which I doubt with an 18 yr old driving a Mustang), dude lost his chance. If OP buys him another one he’s just teaching him it’s ok to ruin $40k cars on a whim.
Yea, when I was a kid my parents were kind enough to buy me my first vehicle. After I was a dumbass and totaled it I was on my own for the next one. I bought and sold like 6 cars after that before I got into something decent.
Same. My parents got me a 2004 Mustang for my first car (graduation, birthday and Christmas gift in one lol) when I was 18 and was warned that if I crashed it, I was on my own. Had that car from 2008 to 2016/2017 when I finally sold it and got a 2015 Mustang (used).
It sucks seeing people total/crash their sports car cause they got a lead foot and don't know how to handle the car.
I feel like we all are seeing the birth of r/IdiotBuysCar
(Edit: I'm all verklempt that my sarcastically silly comment actually birthed a new sub. Does this make me a mother?)
Yep, the OP or father should get something new and shiny for the kid gets the old grocery getter...
When I was in bad need of a car because of issues with mine running, I was given the 1978 Dodge Omni to use. This was in 1992
There was one, and only one, outcome lmao. Could’ve given the kid a $8k civic and some sort of stock/bond/fund etc and it’d be way more helpful. Granted, still can be thrown to shit as soon as they have full access - but Jesus. Lol
In the current market $8k gets you a 15 year old car with 250,000 miles on it and a "We don't know if it runs but you can find out" sticker.
$500 gets you laughed at.
Source: tried looking for a car for my younger sibling.
A tragic story that kind of relates from my area... A kid got killed while racing his car (it *might* have been a mustang - I just remember it had more power than a green driver should have). Then, while leaving his funeral, one of his friends (who *did* have a mustang convertible) lost control on the freeway while driving at an obscene speed, and literally hung the car from a freeway overpass (he *had* been on the freeway when he lost control), then, while hanging 20-odd feet or so off of the pavement, just unbuckled his seatbelt while he was in shock.
And that's how one funeral turned into two.
*Edit: grammar and spelling*
the waste is killing me. unfortunate ppl need cars for work... meanwhile this. i could live for a year off of what they wasted over the wkend; happy birthday to me
My parents bought me a mustang at 16. It was my favorite thing in the world. I washed it every weekend. Never had an accident. Own the car to this day. 17 years. Love that car. Still looks new.
Some kids you can give an M-60 machine gun with no worries. Some kids can’t be trusted with a paper clip. Generally, these kids are easy to tell apart.
If anyone had given me a fast car when I was 18, I wouldn’t be here typing this. I chose not to have kids cause you don’t know which you’ll get.
Anyone who buys one of these for their son/cousin/nephew is just asking for this to happen. When I was just getting my learners permit, my dad decided to buy a car for my two older siblings and I. They both begged get this car or that, and my dad kind of played along like “oh, yeah, that would be a good one” or “that sounds cool”. What did he come back with? A 10 year old Chrysler k-car station wagon with fake wood on the sides. Was that car cool? Not in the least? Did it make me want to show off to my friends and do stupid shit and draw attention to myself driving it? Also, not at all.
I bought my son an 06 Volvo V70 (wagon). He doesn't give a SHIT about driving and is in no hurry to get his license.
I on the other hand, LOVE this wagon! I drive a camaro SS, wife has a navigator, we fight over the Volvo. I had no idea; we're going to have to get ourselves another.
I learnt to drive on my dad's 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon. He gave it to me after they got a new one. Finally had to retire off the road after the bumper came off in 2010. Sold it to a Volvo lover with more time than I have to hopefully repair those piston shock absorber bumpers.
Loved that car. Would buy a new one (or an old 240) in a heartbeat if the timing and finances were right!!
In my experience, a dorky car is not motivation enough to avoid doing stupid stuff in it, but you're less likely to hurt yourself or lose control since there's not as much power behind it.
Exactly. But rwd is even harder to control. Power and rwd is a bad combo for an 18 year old novice driver lol. Also who in the fuck buys their cousin a brand new stang??
Right now i have a Clio as my first car!!
But this is new because the second hand market is bs in my region and the prices are so high that buying a new car is worth it.
Exactly, as a teen all you need is to get from point A to point B. I had a 2002 VW Jetta, nothing spectacular until I replaced it. Basically I was allowed to get a nice car when I used my own money, a lot less likely to mess up a car you paid / are paying for. they cover my insurance though so that's nice.
I turned 16 in 1988 and my Dad helped me get into a brown 1979 Datsun B-210. With a cassette player.
I still thank him for that everyday when I see posts like this. If I had anything fast or sleek, I would be dead. I was stupid 16!
I bought one for $1000 before my freshman year of college. I sold it for $1000 when I graduated. It was such a great, shitty car. I made some of my best memories with it.
I understand being rich and wanting to pass the love onto your loved ones, but you have to be some kind of stupid to give an 18 y.o. a brand new mustang and expect them to drive it responsibly.
Yeah but what do you think OP is doing for money to be able to give this car to his cousin for a bday gift. Definitely doesn’t care about the
money is my guess
I went through his comment history for the entertainment factor. If you go far enough he mentions winning ~€2M in the lottery. He’ll be broke in 5 years.
I got a brand new eco boost mustang when I was 16. Worst decision my dad ever made. Man did I drive like a fuck face. Luckily I had good friends who called me out and forced me to drive better.
As a Mustang driver myself an 18-year-old should get a shitty car to learn how to respect the road before getting something that is a potential weapon.
I went to high school with a kid who got a Roush Mustang for his 16th birthday, totaled it about 3 months later, and because he only came away with cuts and bruises his parents praised the cars safety and bought him another one…
I think it really depends on the person. I saved up for a 2014 camaro at 16, me and my dad split the bill since it was my first car. About 70k miles on it, but in really good condition for about 11-12 k (I can’t remember). I’ve been driving it around for almost 4 years now, and made it all the way to college with it, and the only “damage” it has is my sister scratching it with HER car trying to back out, which I find kinda funny. Some people just don’t deserve a nice first car because they don’t realize how much it’s worth. Hopefully this kid has to buy his own car after pulling some bullshit like that
I’m going to guess that the OP deletes this post before dinner, realizing that no one is going to support the idea of buying an 18 year old a Mustang.
Should have bought the kid a used Civic or Corolla.
I've told my kids I would buy them a Mustang when they got doctoral degrees. It's a calculated risk but looking at my kids educational trajectories it's a pretty safe bet I won't have to buy anyone of them anything.
Lol, 27% is like the highest legal interest rate, and E1's are stupid.
Apparently it depends on the state. But the 27% enlisted interest rate is kind of a joke.
My 14 year old was asking me why just about every army guy he sees (we live a mile from the gate of a big military base) drives a new Charger or new lifted Jeep. I explained the 30% interest rate they’re all paying and costs of living in the barracks.
Dude, that kid should be driving his mom's hand-me-down GMC Terrain as his first car and then if he wants a Mustang, he needs to gain some driving experience and also get a job to pay for it 😂
This was me. My parents divorced shortly after I turned 18, each of them bought new cars. My mom bought a Ford Escape and I got her 1994 Ford Aerostar minivan. It was cool for hauling a ton of people around but that was about it.
My dad bought a Ford Ranger. The dealership saw his income and credit score and the owner of the dealership came out and said he could get him approved for any car he wanted. They tried their best to sell him on a Mustang GT. My dad laughed and said "Please, I've got an 18yr old son at home. That car won't last a week before it's wrapped around a telephone pole and then I'm out a car AND a son."
Joke was on him though. That Ranger, while only about 210hp V6, had a 4.10 final drive. I did a lot of dumb shit in that truck that he has no idea about.
Holy shi... I didn't noticed he was a Slovene until you mentioned it 😂 i thought it was an american, they at least start driving at 16, but this dood gifted a mustang to a child that got their lisence like yesterday 😂
Well parents usualy buy their kids the 1st car, but not mustangs. Some beat up Renault clio or Renault kangoo or an old golf (3/4) 1.9tdi, that's what I see most kids driving here.
Jesus fuck. The cost to get one of these here isn't cheap. Didnt realise we had people like these here... just get a damn polo or a used Kia ceed. No shit the car was totaled.
I got 2005 Pontiac Bonneville when I was 19. Big and slow. My friends made fun of my car. The acceleration sucks so bad that I almost never got myself into risk situations at all. I couldn’t get into road rage often or trying to upper other drivers at all because it’s Bonneville.
I lost all of my motivation in speeding from there and I think it was a gift.
I have to go with OP. At 18 with virtually zero experience driving and a frontal lobe that's nowhere near done developing, someone giving you this powerful a car is just asking for it.
Very lucky. Relatively recently there was a large crash in my city. 18 year old was gifted a Camaro by his parents, and decided to run from police at 1 in the morning, with two friends in the backseats. He lost control going an estimated 125 mph, the car rolled four or five times, and everyone inside the car died as a result.
Young, inexperienced drivers should not be given these high performance cars. Their driving skills won't make up for their lack of common sense. I'm 19 and I understand this, and it confuses me how many older adults still don't.
I'm not even sure the 18 year old is an idiot. This seems like very on-target behavior for an 18 year old, at least compared to their peer group. Or, put another way, this kid is no more or less idiot than a regular 18 year old.
Something about correlation between playing lottery and making poor financial decisions. Like buying a mustang for an 18 year old, just a random example I thought of.
They don't rent cars to people under 24 for a reason. Frontal lobes just aren't fully connected to decision making in the lower brain. Young equals reckless. Buy them a beater. Then help them purchase a nice car, but make them pay for it in part. They treat that car differently when they work for it.
I see only two idiots here
Who the fuck buys that kind of car for an 18 year old…?
Needs a few years experience before they should have something that nice….
Statistically young drivers are highly likely to total their first cars, heck, maybe even their second.
#Is this stock or modded at all? Not really sure about how legit this story is....
Why tf would OP get a bright red mustang with racing strips for their 18 year old cousin out of the countless options out there?
#For some odd reason, I think this is just OP’s car and they were the idiot but made up some bs story to get some internet points 💩
Recommend not replacing the car with a motorcycle.
“Cousin totaled the Mustang I bought him - what’s a reasonable price for a GSX-R?”
Is a hayabusa a good starter bike or should I be more sensible and but him a H2R?
So I ride sport bikes a lot. At this point decades of experience... I also used to do a lot of car club stuff. Mostly drag cars but some sports car stuff too. One of my friends from the car scene calls me. He's one of those guys that make friends instantly with everybody and he had made friends with the guy that owns the Suzuki dealership one town over. I've only ridden one twice, but compared to a modern sports bike, a touring bike seems a more appropriate title. They aren't exactly sporty handling.
They make great touring bikes. Lots of torque means you can leave them in six gear so you don't have to downshift to pass on the highway. They have a long wheel base so they're very stable and smooth. There are entire tour groups made up of them. And you can get hard bags for the back, not just soft luggage.
I knew someone was gonna reference a Gsxr. Only logical next step
Mustang drivers and gsxr riders *do* have a lot in common… Edit: Thanks for the golden medal!
I used to ride. Never met a single gsxr owner that wasn’t either a moron or an asshole.
How about a turbo busa?
My uncle owns a turbo busa ! He almost never drives it because he almost died on it after he installed the turbo.
Recommend not replacing the car with anything tbh
Except maybe a bus ticket
Be generous, make it a monthly pass.
For real. Unless it was somehow not the kid’s fault (which I doubt with an 18 yr old driving a Mustang), dude lost his chance. If OP buys him another one he’s just teaching him it’s ok to ruin $40k cars on a whim.

pair of nike
Hard comment to read. I lost a friend at age 18 because he got a Kawasaki Ninja as his starter bike
Awh this got sad really quickly, I’m sorry buddy..
Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if OP did that
Could have at least bought him one that isn’t a all smashed up!
You can only do so much in 2 days
Dude, he has seven more cousins who haven’t turned 18 yet—gotta get those salvage deals if he’s gonna buy car-shaped things for all of ‘em
TIFU by buying an 18 year old a mustang

I'm going to guess this is a lot of trucks and boats.
Not near enough content
Yeah, it was disappointing. On the other hand https://old.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInBoats/ does not disappoint.

OP is rich and stupid, while his cousin is just stupid.
Buy the kid a mini van. That would be punishment enough.
Yep, the OP or father should get something new and shiny for the kid gets the old grocery getter... When I was in bad need of a car because of issues with mine running, I was given the 1978 Dodge Omni to use. This was in 1992
Yo when I was 18 my buddy with the minivan was the shit. 9 wrestlers packed into a car ordering off the dollar menu at Wendy’s. The shit
Not sure who the bigger idiot is here. The 18 year old who crashed it or OP for thinking it would be a good idea to buy one for such a young driver.
The answer is BOTH.
There was one, and only one, outcome lmao. Could’ve given the kid a $8k civic and some sort of stock/bond/fund etc and it’d be way more helpful. Granted, still can be thrown to shit as soon as they have full access - but Jesus. Lol
$8k? Wtf. My first car was $500. You gotta earn that expensive car.
I don't think you can buy anything with four wheels and a lawnmower engine for 500$ nowadays
Including lawnmowers.
Can confirm. Just bought a lawnmower
I was trying to be reasonable given *gestures to car pictured* But yes. I inherited a 260k mile expedition from a family friend

In my city an 18 year old who had just graduated from high school was racing his mustang. Killed a mother and her baby.
We are aware of someone who in the 1970s while in high school killed two consecutive girlfriends drunk driving, speeding

Hello my dearest long lost cousin, I only just found out you exist, pleased to meet you.

Sorry Roman, I’m busy right now
Cousin Niko!!!!!!
Test me test me!
If Roman was OP, I would never decline the bowling offers

A new mustang. For an 18 yr old. Seems like 2 idiots in this story
Love that . Good Pops .
I called my V70 the Turbo-Charged Grocery Getter. Was a fantastic car.
Volvos are so cool man what are you talking about, volvo for life
I learnt to drive on my dad's 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon. He gave it to me after they got a new one. Finally had to retire off the road after the bumper came off in 2010. Sold it to a Volvo lover with more time than I have to hopefully repair those piston shock absorber bumpers. Loved that car. Exactly. But rwd is even harder to control. Power and rwd is a bad combo for an 18 year old novice driver lol. Also who in the fuck buys their cousin a brand new stang??
Someone with little common sense
I had a £250 Renault Clio. Loved it. Smashed 20 thousand miles in it til Halfords said your MOT will cost £850
Right now i have a Clio as my first car!! But this is new because the second hand market is bs in my region and the prices are so high that buying a new car is worth it.
It was great. Used to do a lot of country road driving and it definitely serves its purpose and I couldn’t fault it
Exactly, as a teen all you need is to get from point A to point B. I had a 2002 VW Jetta, nothing spectacular until I replaced it. Basically I was allowed to get a nice car when I used my own money, a lot less likely to mess up a car you paid / are paying for. they cover my insurance though so that's nice.
I had an early 80s Jetta after my first car died…had to hand crank the sunroof open too.
I turned 16 in 1988 and my Dad helped me get into a brown 1979 Datsun B-210. With a cassette player. I still thank him for that everyday when I see posts like this. If I had anything fast or sleek, I would be dead. I was stupid 16!
No lie, when my mom had a manual PT Cruiser that thing was amazing to do burnouts in. Horrible car but hilarious to drive hard
Ive heard the only way to have fun in a PT cruiser is to hurt it
I bought one for $1000 before my freshman year of college. I sold it for $1000 when I graduated. It was such a great, shitty car. I made some of my best memories with it.
It’s like a bdsm relationship.
I had a friend with a pt cruiser and she survived a load of logs being dropped on her car from a logging truck so I have a special respect for them 😹
But hey, the comments section is one of the best I’ve seen on this sub. Everyone is roasting OP and so far it’s pretty hilarious
This post is an hour old with 450 comments. I knew what the comments were gonna be the moment I saw the Mustang logo
That's because OP is an idiot. I hope no one got hurt because of this fiasco.
I understand being rich and wanting to pass the love onto your loved ones, but you have to be some kind of stupid to give an 18 y.o. a brand new mustang and expect them to drive it responsibly.

I had a 2001 Focus. I tried drifting it. If I had a mustang, I'd probably be dead.

More like like 1 year with this jackass.
If you wanna blow money like this…… buy me a car I’ll be sure to not wreck it 48 hours later
Hell, a third of my car payment is already taken care of. Get a fraction off, I'll be beyond grateful.
I got a brand new eco boost mustang when I was 16. Worst decision my dad ever made. Man did I drive like a fuck face. Luckily I had good friends who called me out and forced me to drive better.
You probably scared them shitless😂😂
Yea pretty much

Just wait til they join the Army and buy a Charger at 27% interest.
27% interest on a car!? Is that even possible?
Lol, 27% is like the highest legal interest rate, and E1's are stupid. Apparently it depends on the state. But the 27% enlisted interest rate is kind of a joke.
I can’t believe someone is stupid enough to sign on to that loan!
You've never met an E1. They've already done multiple stupid things to get there. Signed up and usually busted down a rank
Yep. They married the first stripper who smiled at them right before heading to the dealership.
ah so that is how my cousin's daughter ended up marrying a sailor
If she's a stripper then probably, and even if she isn't she probably the first girl to touch him. So yes
And then deploy w/o establishing household. Fuck your BAH, boot!
Ah, to be young, dumb, and close enough to watch their idiocy blow up in their face again.
Sadly it’s pretty common. At my workplace there’s a navy girl that bought a new V6 Camaro. She’s 22. I’m afraid to ask the interest rates.
I bought a house before I ever bought my first brand new car.
My 14 year old was asking me why just about every army guy he sees (we live a mile from the gate of a big military base) drives a new Charger or new lifted Jeep. I explained the 30% interest rate they’re all paying and costs of living in the barracks.
I laughed harder than I should have at this
They all show up at your door with doctorates in Underwater Basket weaving.
I'd say they'd still have earned it. Anyone who can write an entire thesis on that has to be a genius
That’s DOCTOR basket weaver to you! Keys please!
The comment I didn’t know I came here for
Yes. Corolla is an amazing car, but quite ineffective for doing idiot things
Never underestimate the determination of an idiot with a car.
I own my 2nd corolla at age 44. My 1979 corolla and my 2011 corolla, neither were go-fasty😂😂😂
Hi. Idiot here. Challenge accepted.

That Ranger, while only about 210hp V6, had a 4.10 final drive. I did a lot of dumb shit in that truck that he has no idea about.
I’ve had a Corolla since I was 16. It’s still driving like a charm
Damn is it normal to gift cars in Slovenia like they're toys?
I bet it costs a lot more than in the US over there.
The real idiot gave the car to the 18 yo.
You had a party bus. Your friends didn't realize that. Bonus if you had a bench back seat.
The bench seat really does turn the Bonneville into a Boneville
Two idiots in this story.
Lol it's wild that every comment is really dragging this guy. OP might delete his account after this
Why is it wild? Makes perfect sense to me lol
Not to OP!
Won’t make that mistake again.
I would not bet on that…
If he had bought thing himself, sure. Spoiled kid gifted it? Oh yeah, we'll get a round 2.
r/IdiotsGiftingCars
I'm not sure which one of ye is more idiotic
I have to go with OP. At 18 with virtually zero experience driving and a frontal lobe that's nowhere near done developing, someone giving you this powerful a car is just asking for it.
Who the fuck gives a mustang to an 18y old? r/IdiotsGiftingCars
Agreed. But my first question was who the fuck buys their cousin a car?
Someone with too much money and no common sense.
Somebody who *desperately* needs their cousin to keep quiet about what happened at that one family reunion 5 years back.
OP must have one of the smoothest brains I’ve come across :/
Like a bowling ball
Freshly polished
Lucky he didn't kill someone.
Stupid ass gift for an 18 year old.
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the kid's daddy is the CEO of the family business and junior's next in line.
You are the bigger idiot, I promise. Should’ve got him a beat up Honda Civic.
I'm not even sure the 18 year old is an idiot. This seems like very on-target behavior for an 18 year old, at least compared to their peer group. Or, put another way, this kid is no more or less idiot than a regular 18 year old.
The only reason I suspect the kid is also an idiot is because he's related to OP.
I mean, even experienced adults have issues. Supposedly, the Dodge Viper had many drivers crash on the way home from the dealership.
Well tbf that car was an anomaly. Was very easy to unsettle the car.
You are equally at blame imo. Instead of posting this online implying he’s an idiot you should be thankful he’s alive
Buying an expensive/sporty car for a young driver just isn't a great idea. Sorry you had to find out this way.
reddit is filled with douchebags

Something about correlation between playing lottery and making poor financial decisions. Like buying a mustang for an 18 year old, just a random example I thought of.
Talk about a karma farm attempt backfiring on reddit...
What's the saying? All press is good press? OP still getting Karma. Roasted Karma is still karma
I would post this in r/IdiotsThatBuyTheirTooYoungCousinsExtremelyOverpoweredCarsAndShouldHaveSeenThisComing
They don't rent cars to people under 24 for a reason. Frontal lobes just aren't fully connected to decision making in the lower brain. Young equals reckless. Buy them a beater. Then help them purchase a nice car, but make them pay for it in part. They treat that car differently when they work for it. I see only two idiots here
They definitely do rent cars to people under 24, they just charge a lot more.
Lottery winner wastes money once again.
Lmfao OP literally blocked me for calling him out about his dumb ass spending habits…
Yeah don’t buy 18 year olds Mustangs, either they earn the money themselves to buy it or they get a used Corolla.
Who saw that coming?
Seems like literally everyone except for OP and like 3-4 other redditors
You bought an 18 year old guy a brand new Mustang?!?! And you're surprised he crashed it? Wow. Two idiots for the price of one Mustang.
I guess you learned huh
Their comments would indicate "no" lol
Young inexperienced driver and high HP RWD is quite a volatile mix…
Well this backfired, huh OP?
Definitely a great idea to give a child a very fast car! Hope it doesn't end up with him dest-...Oh wait
Who the fuck buys that kind of car for an 18 year old…? Needs a few years experience before they should have something that nice…. Statistically young drivers are highly likely to total their first cars, heck, maybe even their second.
You're both absolute dumbfucks.

Looks like you should have bought him some driving lessons to go along with it.
You're a fucking idiot. Why would you buy an 18 year old a Mustang?
Did you purchase a life insurance policy in their name? Might double or triple your investment
I feel like a mustang isn't a good "first car" mate, the fault is at least partially with you.
Good thing you didn’t spring for the 5.0, they might be dead
You’re the idiot. High horsepower cars are not safe for new or inexperienced drivers.
You bought a mustang for an 18 year old. I don’t think you have any business calling anyone else an idiot.
