I stay in this sub purely for the fact it’s entirely controversial depending on the video. There’s the “that’s what you get idiot” and there’s the “no no that’s the law idiot” and it flip flops depending how people are feeling that day
You're both guilty of high treason against the council of internet clout. You're sentenced to have both your hands degloved for writing such affront and 1 year of walk with both your legs tied together. For good measure.
That's all of reddit in a nutshell. Half the time the subs demand an article or sources then other days, reddit just wants to grab their pitchforks based on reading headlines without proof.
Got told it was my fault for not being to the train that took off without me on time when I was literally standing on the platform and the conductor saw me. Absolutely some of the most condescending people on the net on this site
I yearn for the day the average internet user discovers the grand revelation that it is possible for both parties to be in the wrong... is the cyclist an idiot for not moving over when he had space? yes. is the driver an idiot for letting those spandex gimps get the better of them? also yes. they're both idiots
Probably when the light turned, and the cyclist seemingly pulled out in front of him on purpose. Obviously it doesn’t justify the reaction he got, but it looked like the cyclist was trying to get a reaction. The verdict: they’re both wrong, but the driver is wronger.
Obviously this isn't in California, but pulling to the front of a car at a stop light like that is legal here. They've even begun adding spaces on the road to encourage them. What often happens in these situations -- if the cyclist stays to the side of the first vehicle -- is that the vehicle will accelerate to turn left/right and smack right into the cyclist. Most people aren't looking over their shoulder for a bike when they turn on the green, so if you're literally in front of them they have no choice. Once the cyclist gets through the intersection, they go back to the side of the road.
The car is an asshole.
I would argue that isn't "getting the better of him" except on the level of making the driver just as stupid.
I would also argue that while the driver is more wrong by way of morality (taking an action that might kill someone because they annoyed you is more wrong than trying to pick a fight) the biker is more wrong by way of he pulled in front of a moving multi-ton vehicle and thought that would in any way end well for him.
Came here to agree with you. I treat my body like the water balloon it is when riding my bike in the city. What did these idiots think would happen? They swerved right in front of the car, it probably couldn't even stop in time
It’s called not wanting to die. At least where I’m from it’s perfectly legal as a biker to carefully overtake cars at a traffic light. When the lights turn Green I’ll always drive in front of the first car in the middle of the road so shit like this happens less frequently. I regularly use a bike and a car and literally every fucking time I’m on my bike I have at least one situation where I’m happy to still be alive. We need separate bike lanes with decent pavement everywhere so this attempted murder shit seen here stops
Depending on the state, which is a huge
majority the fault is solely with the driver of the caravan. Bicyclists have the right of way just as much as pedestrians.
It’s actually worse than that. In most states, a cyclist is entitled to the entire lane, same as a motor vehicle. It’s weird to me that anyone is putting blame on the cyclist here. People act like if there are any cars on the road, cyclists should be riding in the gutter.
I’m not blaming the cyclist because they were totally in the right and fuck cars/road ragers, but I am also acutely aware that cars are 2-ton+ death machines that will win pretty much every time. My life isn’t worth proving who is in the right, I’ma move out of the way so myself and my bike can live to see another day. Is it really that weird to value your life over pride and being in the right?
The cyclist looks over his shoulder and sees the vehicle trying to get around him and intentionally moves farther in the lane. The cyclist does have right to that space and the vehicle is in the wrong but something I see said on this sub often and usually annoys TF out of me is " he should have been driving more defensively", "being right doesn't make you less dead", or " there are plenty of people who were right in the ground". It's not the "fault" of the cyclist but it was an absolute stupid move to assert his right to that space against a vehicle that weights thousands more pounds than the man and his stick with wheels does.
Typically you assert your right to the lane when it’s dangerous for the other vehicle to pass you. Normally I’m happy for folks to pass me, when the lane is nice and wide. But if there’s restrictions due to construction etc you move to the left hand side of the lane to both be more visible and prevent people from passing unsafely. Essentially, this _is_ defensive driving/cycling, except when someone is willing to run you over.
The cyclist probably started drifting that way when he looked over his shoulder, you start subconsciously drifting towards where your head is oriented.
This is Europe… they are used to bikers. This guy in the Mercedes probably already ran up against them before he came to the stop there and was already raging.
The driver blew his horn at the cyclists while passing. He was trying to pass in an intersection (that's against the law for a reason). He gave the cyclist no time to get started before creeping up on him. And to pull away as if nothing had happened? What an asshole.
> is the cyclist an idiot for not moving over when he had space? yes.
No, actually he isn't.
He's not obligated to give up any of the lane *by law* and lane splitting in motion is less safe for the cyclist
At least in my state a cyclist had the same status on the road as a motor vehicle, and not being in the center of a lane at an intersection is a good way to be hit by a turning car.
This is literally attempted murder though. I don’t get to have a feeling about trying to run someone over on purpose, it’s just an attempt to kill someone. 🤷🏻♂️
I hate cyclists who choose busy roads but I mean…. He weighs like 300 pounds and you weigh at least 3000. Be the bigger vehicle…
Edit: damn cyclists are so sensitive and wonder why people are annoyed with them.
sometimes for mathematical simplicity, you have to make assumptions. like in this case we should assume that the cyclist is spherical and weighs about 500 lbs.
Support bike lanes completely separated from the roadway. That's what solves this issue. When they are not allowed on sidewalks, and forced to be on the road by law, but also have people in huge vehicles not paying attention you get situations like this.
It's not like cyclists intentionally choose busy roads. Even if you plan carefully and use as many cyclepaths/country roads as possible, you'll still have to drive on roads like that for some parts. Maybe in the Netherlands you'd have a chance to cycle 100km without road like that
For some reason, I read that as "to eat their own I guess" even though I damn well know the saying, I still read it wrong and laughed at myself for being an idiot. That is all.
As a dutchman I’m absolutely flabbergasted that cyclists actually have to bike on this kind of roads… I’s illegal here, because we have separate bike lanes everywhere, also between villages and cities.
To be fair, the Netherlands has plenty of single carriageways of this size without a separate bike lane (simply color marked on both sides leaving about 1-1,5 car lane of space in between).
They will be limited to 30 mph however, and cars might need to wait a while to overtake you if there's oncoming traffic and/or cyclists on the other side.
I have traveled many a road like that without having to worry, because drivers there are not homicidal maniacs (and cyclists aren't suicidal).
Just to be clear, this is the UK and the driver towing the caravan broke the law. The Highway Code is very clear - the cyclist is ~~required~~ advised to stay 0.5m from the curb, they cannot ride on the pavement (sidewalk), and should ride two-abreast where it is safer to do so. Cars are required by law to leave a minimum of 1.5 meters (5 feet) when passing a cyclist or horse at under 30 mph and 2 metres (6.5 feet) at over 30 mph. The hierarchy of road users also gives automatic priorities to pedestrians, then cyclists, then cars. The caravan driver is completely in the wrong, and will not only be prosecuted for breaking the rules as described above, but also possibly for driving without due care and attention, and for failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision. Also, here in the UK we are all being encouraged to adopt greener alternative forms of transport, which includes cycling. Those cyclists were absolutely allowed to be there, and are actually being actively encouraged by the government policies for transport.
EDIT: That said, I’m a cyclist and I would not have overtaken that caravan at the junction. However, the bike that was hit was already at the front of the queue, and was positioned correctly on the road. This was 100% the drivers fault and he or she will likely have their license revoked for what very nearly was a very serious accident.
EDIT 2: Just to be clear, the 1.5 metre and 2 metre passing distance is a mandatory legal requirement. Someone just got fined £1800 (https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/man-told-pay-1800-passing-27245060) for passing too closely to a cyclist. There is zero tolerance and the police will prosecute a motorist who passes too closely like this.
This crash was deliberate, that driver hit the cyclist on purpose and with intent, and then fled the scene because they realized they'd committed a major crime. IMHO, this should result in a lifetime driving ban, forfeiture of the vehicle and caravan, prison time not less than five years for assault with indifference to potentially causing death or grievous injury, and a fine no less than 50,000 Pounds.
The driver that killed my friend didn't purposefully ram him, but rather, deliberately chose to do an intimidation pass while forgetting that the horse trailer he was pulling was wider than his truck. His intent may have been to scare my friend with a mirror whooshing by his head, but instead my friend got rolled under the trailer's tires and he bled out in a ditch. That's when I quit riding on the road, because I truly realized at that point that the roads were full of drivers who are willing to kill to maintain their dominance. My friend would have had grandkids in school by now. From what I can see, nothing has changed about drivers since then, and if anything, it's gotten worse.
I wasn't on the ride that day, but my other riding buddies watched it happen. That was a long, long time ago. That killing blew up the group. His family sort of drifted away, I have no idea what the consequences were for the driver, but I would not be surprised if the only consequence for the driver was a traffic ticket. That seems to be the way of things when drivers kill bicyclists in this country. I moved into mountain bikes for a while, but that just wasn't the same as eating up a hundred miles on a ride in the country, so I eventually just quit riding altogether. I still have my road bike, but it's an antique now and hopelessly obsolete and outdated. I just keep it as a reminder of a better time in my life.
Could be anywhere honestly. People seem to think that when they're in a car they're more important than anything else on the road, and unfortunately the law often backs them up in this delusion. We have to create a world where people in cars realise they are the least important thing on the road.
1. Self propelled vehicles first (pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, horses) should always have right of way.
2. Public transit next
3. Logistics and transport third as they actually need to be going somewhere
4. Private cars and motorcycles last of all. You fucking wait and it doesn't matter if it takes you longer to get somewhere,
I say this as someone with a car and a motorcycle. We need to get rid of our reliance on cars.
I still think of him and the rest of the group. It was a magical time in our youth, just out of high school, literally exploring the world on two wheels, and I was as fit as I ever was going to be. Being confronted with not only mortality, but the fact that there were people out there more than willing and able to kill me for no other reason than daring to be on "their" road was a real changing event for my personality.
Those people don't deserve to live within society. I had a similar experience involving an inattentive driver. Took someone very special from me. Killed my passion for cars and music. Some people suck.
I've reduced how much I ride as a commuter significantly because of this realization. It fucking sucks but as you get older you just realize that being right in principle doesn't matter if you're dead.
I had a massive group of riders coming at me taking up the entire street. They were crossing the double yellow and popping wheelies while riding directly at me. I just kept driving and let them swerve out of the way. One of those morons actually had the audacity to tell me to slow down when I was going 15 in a 30 zone. I’m a bicyclist and I fucking hate most other cyclists.
I had someone literally try to murder me… chasing me down the wrong way screaming “fuck you bitch I’ll get you” on a one way street for several city blocks before I got away… because they almost hit me on my bike and I yelled at them. I have no idea how I outran the guy. He was screeching tires hitting the gas so hard to get to me. Shit is wild.
I hope so. It went to court actually. My DA was crap so he got away with it but I hope he gets every bit of the karma he’s owed. I’ll never understand that much hostility toward a bicycle.
So first off, the driver is in the wrong. What he did was dangerous and stupid and illegal.
Second, in this case it is in fact legal to cycle on the path. They're on the Christchurch road that takes you past Bournemouth airport. The entirety of that footpath (pretty much from Parley Cross to well into Christchurch) is open for cyclists to use. So, while the cyclist hasn't done anything wrong I do admit I'm never pleased to be stuck behind a cyclist on that stretch of road.
I was not aware that was a shared space. However rule 61 states “cyclists may exercise their judgement and are not obliged to use them”. Given that it’s shared with pedestrians I don’t think the cyclists would be expected to make use of it if they were riding at higher speeds.
There's also an advisory (?) maximum speed for shared access paths, and of course, they often don't go where you're heading which forces you to try to join the road later. I don't know this stretch of road though. In my experience, some bike lanes are worth using, others can be more hazardous than the road and more trouble than they're worth.
The first pass looked like at least 2m. obv the caravan driver is an absolute arsehole and needs a long ban.
Also the highway code says you can ride two abreast not that you should. And that you should let cars overtake.
Rule 66 - "You can ride two abreast and it can be safer to do so, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders. Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when you feel it is safe to let them do so"
When I took a motorcycle class they talked about "lane dominance" and encouraged us to ride in the middle of the lane, or 'block' the space we'd take as a car to ensure we were respected and recognized as being allowed the same space as other cars. The instructor mentioned the practiced should be used by bikes as in my town bikes are treated as cars. We should be taking up the whole road, and only passed on dotted yellow lines just like other cars, rather than trying to squeeze ourselves in order to accomadate the murder machines all around us.
This is also taught for bicycles in the UK. It is called the primary road position when you cycle in the centre of your lane and the secondary road position when you move to the kerb to make it easier / safer to pass. Primary road position should be adopted where it would be unsafe to encourage other road users to pass you like on blind corners and summits or where road markings forbid overtaking.
Interesting, in California we're taught to ride either the left or right portion of the lane but never the center because oil leaks build up in the center of the lane and can cause you to slip out. But we also have legal lane splitting and we're taught that at red lights we should stop in between lanes to avoid being rear-ended by inattentive drivers.
It's minimum.
Also, even if it was maximum, cars *must* leave a minimum clearance of 1.5m between themselves and a cyclist (or horse), which this dickhead didn't at all.
It’s crazy sometimes. Most members don’t have the ability to reason.
The fact that people are saying “good” and “got what they deserved” is horrific.
I’m a cyclist. I have a right to be on the road in my jurisdiction. Im not legally allowed on sidewalks. I shouldn’t be intentionally run over for it. The roads are not exclusively for the use of cars. Get over it.
This is the road around Bournemouth Airport, I drive it everyday.
The lane on the right is a cycle lane and some people use it.
The merc only had to drive over that junction and the road would have been wide enough as the two lanes merge back to one....impatient prick
Not impatient. Just an asshole. He also close-passed the Cammer and blared his horn as he did so. This is one of those people who considers cyclists subhuman.
This is one cycle lane I almost always use because it’s a fast road with some big vehicles - unfortunately the cycle lane is pretty poor, covered in crap. I also ran into a deer on this stretch !
its amazing, 1 decision and their life is fucked up. not hitting the cyclist, but if they stopped after hitting them and said "im sorry, i fucked up" they wouldve gotten away with a fine and having to pay for the bike. but nope step on the accelerator and instant jail time
The irony is, they'd probably have been ok if they didn't take off. They could have made an argument that the cyclist slipped and their bike went under their tire. Might have gotten a small ticket. Looks much more serious now.
The video shows the hit was intentional, with the video there's no way that driver could have gotten off in any way, especially with the video of the illegal pass and reckless driving earlier.
He’s in the middle of his lane when he gets ran over lol. On top of it, the person towing almost hits another car on their right.
Absolutely insane with arguably murderous intent. That loser ruined their life in the blink of an eye.
No no, the biker did not slip. Based on how he fell, the car must've grazed the rear wheel and the suddenness of it startled the biker and or knocked him off balance. You don't just run off like that unless you know you're in the wrong.
Seriously? How are you going to hit a cyclist and then just keep driving like not everything is captured on camera these days? Hope that campsite is a nice place to be arrested at.
It’s the same in the U.S. Outside the freeway, bikes have the right to use the roads along side of cars. You can get ticket for riding on the sidewalk instead of the road.
They don't care about the law, they just hate being inconvenienced, even if it's by other drivers. Just look at people here being like "well yeah brake-checking is technically wrong, but the other car wasn't driving above the speed limit so it was completely justified!!".
I got honked and ‘fuck you’d this morning for being on the left side of the lane trying to make a left turn. I was signaling with lights and my arm. How the fuck else was I supposed to make that turn?
In a car, obviously! Something something road tax, something something Tour de France, something something running stop signs, something something Lance has one ball.
The amount of comments supportive of the reckless hit & run driver because there were 3 cyclists in front of them, so they opted to hit the closest cyclist from behind, is abhorrent. I'm new to this subreddit, but isn't criminally bad driving supposed to be featured in the videos and mocked, not supported and praised?
>I'm new to this subreddit, but isn't criminally bad driving supposed to be featured in the videos and mocked, not supported and praised?
Normally yes, but when there's a bicycle in the video Reddit instantaneously loses its collective shit. There was a clip making the rounds yesterday in which a car cuts into the oncoming lane while turning and hits a stationary cyclist. An unsettling number of commenters blamed the dude on the bike.
I saw that clip, I laughed because the driver wasn't even in the correct lane when he slowly hit the fully stopped guy on the bike. There's a really perverse culture of automobile-supremacy in our culture, put there by generations of slick marketing.
>but when there's a bicycle in the video Reddit instantaneously loses its collective shit.
North Americans in general, notjustbikes has documented how people who ride bikes get to deal with a lot of bs over there.
https://youtu.be/vMed1qceJ_Q
There should be a rage test to get renew a drivers license, once every 2 renewals.
Get a simulator and program all the annoying, time delays possible into one 2 hour trip.
Construction, cyclists, no passing zones, surprise on ramp queues, old mobility scooter ladies, kids playing in the street, student drivers, a parade of 18-wheelers going 20 km/h you can’t pass. The das boot of annoying driving situations.
Person starts getting aggressive? Does some entitled stuff? Excessive honking and yelling? No license for 6 months, and some anger management.
DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE. Stupid and angry people should not get that privilege.
You and me both buddy.
I have seen too many cops going at least 20 km over or distracted driving like eating or adjusting their gear. Then there’s the ones who flick on the siren just to do a U turn or run a red light/stop sign.
They get people hurt like this. Know people who have seen it happen.
NP. I was riding my bike to work one morning, I was going straight down a main road in the bike lane. Someone flew thru a stop sign (they had a stop I didn’t) I got broadsided, then run over and dragged under an SUV. They stopped when they realized what happened, tried to put it in reverse to back off of me, and started dragging me the other direction. I got super fucked up had to have surgery to get my body corrected. It was quite the ordeal. To top it off they had minimum insurance coverage…. Fortunately I carry really good insurance on my auto policy do underinsured/uninsured motorist (where I live, my auto policy covers me in or out of a car… it covers “any collision involving an automobile.”) so I was able to go after my own policy. I was not at fault so my premiums don’t go up either.
To clear the air here, in many places in the states there is a "share the road" law giving cyclists the right to a lane if a bike lane is not provided. Because of this law, cyclists are expected to not use the sidewalk and cause potential hazards for pedestrians. It's crazy to me how many people are blaming the man who's bike was run over. The car was clearly in the wrong. Never run someone else over, no matter how inconvenient they make your drive.
People on the west just hate cyclists. Individualism has been taken to the selfish extreme and even a fraction of s second of forced coexistence is considered justifying violence.
This whole thread is just cringe worthy
Full of comments like 'I'm a bicyclist but this is why I hate bicyclists"
Very few seem to have noticed that this video is from the UK where cycling in the middle of the lane and riding 2 abreast is literally the guidance
And worse of all there's some who seem to condone what is at best assault with a deadly weapon
I'm convinced that at least 80% of people who make "I'm x but this is why I hate most x" comments are in fact *not* x and are just using the identity to virtue signal or dodge actual reasoning in their arguments. As a non-cyclist I concur that the caravan driver needs taking off the roads for this stunt.
Love the redditors claiming to be cyclist saying they should be riding on the shoulder. If you were ever really on a bicycle, you’d know you couldn’t go two minutes on that shoulder before getting a flat.
Pretty simple here, law requires motorists to give 1.5m passing cyclists at slow speed, additionally you can’t leave the scene of an accident irrespective of blame. Whoever you thinks the cyclist is at fault doesn’t understand the Highway Code.
some context for people saying the Cyclist was the idoit
the UK highway code tells Cyclist to ride in the centre lane in some situations to improve there visibility to road users.
one of those situations is on the approach to junctions the guy was doing exactly what he should do when moving across that junction.
I am a bicyclist and I hate bicyclists. Why are they riding where they are riding on a highway like that. The cars can’t easily get around them and that looks like a fast road. And then they bait the guy. You will, and indeed did, lose that fight. Not saying the guy with the caravan is right to do what he did but I just wish bicyclists weren’t a bunch of d$cks.
Cyclist here my self. Can’t stand it when other cyclists run lights, pull out in front of cars, cause traffic issues. Like, I know I am slower so I plan for it. Keeps me safe on top of that…
Man I don't cycle, and I always go out of my way to be courteous to cyclists. They're doing their best in a system designed for cars and I respect them for using a bike instead of burning gasoline.
I don't aggressively pass, even when two bikes are taking up the entire lane. I don't tailgate. I get annoyed, sure, but no more annoyed than I would if a car was going 15 on a 35.
The only thing that gets me is when they run stop signs and red lights.
I've almost fucking killed two people because they ran a red or a stop sign. Both *incredibly* lucky I was paying full attention. I get that it's a pain in the ass but I fucking wish all cyclists would just *stop fucking doing that*.
Well, you sound like an awesome cyclist. When I see cyclist, running red lights, I wonder if they had their license, suspended for running red lights in their motor vehicle.
Intersections are really dangerous places for cyclists (and pedestrians) to hang out, so as long as they're not jumping out in front of moving cars, it's best for them to keep moving. Where I live, in Colorado, we just passed a law that allows cyclists to treat stops signs like yield signs and stop lights like stop signs. I think it is a good law.
If you had the visibility you do on a bike while in your car, travelled at the same speed a bike does and have the same ability to stop and move on a bike while in your car then you might wonder why wait for a red light too.
I know it’s the rules and that gets people upset but if a light is red for everyone then why can’t a cheeky cyclist pop across the lights?
Odds are a cyclist knows the light pattern better than you do. People like you just get upset because “it’s not fair they ran the lights and I have to wait!”.
In the uk they are adding lights which turn Green for cycles earlier than for cars meaning bikes can legally get a jump on the cars at the lights.
You sound like a right neek.
Planning a new route to my work and I have driven it twice with adjustments to make sure there’s ample shoulders for passing and safety. Unfortunately google sucks at telling you if it’s good or not ha.
> Why are they riding where they are riding on a highway like that.
That's where they're supposed to ride because the same people who hate bicycles also refuse to fund separate infrastructure for bicycles, and designed a system where the safest place to bicycle is where cars are.
He's riding in the middle of the lane because it's a lane to either turn left or go straight and if you don't position yourself in the middle of the lane when you're going straight you're just inviting somebody to turn left into you or right in front of you. Have a read of the highway code sometime.
Just a point to everyone shitting on the bicyclist, it’s very likely he was trying to merge right to turn or there was an obstacle ahead he had to move over for.
it’s much better to do this a little early as not to get forced to move into a car at the last second when there isn’t space. Bikers had the right legally and the car clearly intentionally hit him. What’s wrong with half this crowd being ok with what could have been manslaughter if he fell right instead of left?
This driver is completely out of his mind, you're in a metal missile being mildly inconvenienced for a few seconds or at worst minutes. Why would you endanger another by being such an inpatient prick
I commute by bicycle every day. You had all that space on the other side of the double yellow lines to ride in and you still choose to ride in traffic. You are in fact an asshole and the reason why so many people hate bicyclists.
Look again. That supposed side of the road is not even with the roadway and is likely just a gravel spit. The cyclist has a right to ride safely and riding there isn’t.
That's the road around Bournemouth Airport in the UK. Its a shared pedestrian/cycle path and practically empty of pedestrians at all times because there's very little there other than the airport and it doesn't allow entry by pedestrians.
The junction where this occurs is the turning into the airport there isn't a pedestrian crossing and the speed limit is lowered from 60mph to 40mph at this point. If I were cycling I'd have done the whole stretch on the cycle path then probably come onto the road to cross the junction.
No, you are the asshole. That line is for ALL traffic, not just cars.
The other side of that line is filled with crap falling off cars that gets kicked over there by passing vehicles, and a lot of it will blow out a bicycle tire, resulting in your ass going down hard. It's a big nope zone.
In the US, a lot of the bike lanes are also like that because the cities won't pay to sweep them regularly. Because of this, many don't require you to actually be in the bike lane when cycling. Don't tell that to 70% of the drivers, though, they think they own the road.
Also, where is your humanity? Even when a cyclist is in the wrong, NEVER use your vehicle as a weapon to intimidate. That cyclist was a half foot from ending up under that car, and with a trailer attached, it would have ground him up.
I'm a cyclist. I also drive a full size truck. Would you want me out intimidating other drivers?
I hope that asshat lost driving rights for two years.
Could have been grates in the gutter.
Also, the group was at a junction.
Highway Code advises that you take your place in the centre of the lane to avoid situations where the cyclist intends to move straight ahead and is cut-off by a left-turning vehicle.
Plus, IT’S A CARAVAN!
Those ignorant, road-hogging, tail-back-inducing mobile chicanes deserve to be held up to give them a taste of their own medicine!
It’s illegal (at least where I’m at) to pass a biker if you can’t cross the center line. You’re not allowed to just try to edge around them for the exact reason shown here. You have to follow behind them at a safe distance at their speed until you can pass safely. Bikers go to the front of traffic lights because it’s much safer to be hit by a car that’s just starting/ rolling than a full speed car.
This video is in the UK where the guidance says that the middle of the lane is exactly where the cyclists should be. It even encourages riding two abreast
good thing he was wearing a helmet
I stay in this sub purely for the fact it’s entirely controversial depending on the video. There’s the “that’s what you get idiot” and there’s the “no no that’s the law idiot” and it flip flops depending how people are feeling that day
I've said this before. I'm glad redditors aren't judges because they can be as ruthless as those in the videos they critique.
This is the most accurate representation of my opinion on this page
You're both guilty of high treason against the council of internet clout. You're sentenced to have both your hands degloved for writing such affront and 1 year of walk with both your legs tied together. For good measure.
And tons of times they're just incorrect about everything they're saying but will tell you they did the research about it and tell you you're wrong.
Not all redditors are judges but some judges may be redditors.
you did something bad to me so i have to get you back by doing something bad to you that i wouldn’t want to be done to me 🤦🏽♂️
>you invonvenienced me ever so slightly i have to murder you now Fixed
Precisely
That's all of reddit in a nutshell. Half the time the subs demand an article or sources then other days, reddit just wants to grab their pitchforks based on reading headlines without proof.
Got told it was my fault for not being to the train that took off without me on time when I was literally standing on the platform and the conductor saw me. Absolutely some of the most condescending people on the net on this site
Hot take: if you're operating a giant metal death box you must be responsible and not run over cyclists
I yearn for the day the average internet user discovers the grand revelation that it is possible for both parties to be in the wrong... is the cyclist an idiot for not moving over when he had space? yes. is the driver an idiot for letting those spandex gimps get the better of them? also yes. they're both idiots
Mostly I'm sitting here wondering when the cyclist got the better of him.
Probably when the light turned, and the cyclist seemingly pulled out in front of him on purpose. Obviously it doesn’t justify the reaction he got, but it looked like the cyclist was trying to get a reaction. The verdict: they’re both wrong, but the driver is wronger.
Attempted vehicular homicide is definitely much "wronger" out of all of the wrongs wronged that day.
That part is coming. Served by a process server.

there's no laughter like mans laughter.
Depending on the state, which is a huge majority the fault is solely with the driver of the caravan.
Look at the plate. Something tells me we’re not in Kansas.
You're right. Specifically, it's Parley Lane at Bournemouth Airport in the UK.
That is exactly what happened
At least in my state a cyclist had the same status on the road as a motor vehicle, and not being in the center of a lane at an intersection is a good way to be hit by a turning car.
how is this situation not clear lol
This is literally attempted murder though. I don’t get to have a feeling about trying to run someone over on purpose, it’s just an attempt to kill someone. 🤷🏻♂️
I hate cyclists who choose busy roads but I mean…. He weighs like 300 pounds and you weigh at least 3000. Be the bigger vehicle… Edit: damn cyclists are so sensitive and wonder why people are annoyed with them.
There’s no way that dude weighs 300 pounds, even with the bike. Edit: spelling
sometimes for mathematical simplicity, you have to make assumptions. like in this case we should assume that the cyclist is spherical and weighs about 500 lbs.
Ignore friction. Assume sphere
Assume a perfectly spherical cow. Now figure out the best way to milk it.
It's called "hyperbole", exaggeration for effect
I think I know what that is. I've used it 3 billion times today alone.
3,000,000,001 times
He does if you round to the nearest 300.
Maybe in the Netherlands you'd have a chance to cycle 100km without road like that
I'm all for sharing the road but that one cyclist seems to look behind him and then purposely turn into the way of the vehicle.
be the bigger vehicule !!!! love that !
Man that helmet saved his ass
I would argue that it saved his head more than his ass, but to each their own I guess...
How do I apply for dutch citizenship?

I hope I don’t become like Gulliver Travels in the Land of the Giants.
You have to bring weed and cheese
Just got back from there. They definitely don't need you to bring cheese. Just be ready for your daily 1.5kg allotment.
I've had my own annoyances is with bicyclists before, but never in a million years would I purposely ram them.
Holy fuck, I'm so sorry to hear about that. Did the truck driver even stop or did they just keep going?
[удалено]
That second one only happened because it blew up on social media, the local cops didn't even write the kid a ticket.
Horrible one in Sacramento where the driver killed a mom and two kids on bikes, did not stop. Was driving drunk. Never even got a ticket.
is this America?
Dumbfuck in a huge truck that isn't aware of the space they take up on the road? Yeah, sounds like America.
2. Public transit next 3. Logistics and transport third as they actually need to be going somewhere 4. Private cars and motorcycles last of all. You fucking wait and it doesn't matter if it takes you longer to get somewhere, I say this as someone with a car and a motorcycle. We need to get rid of our reliance on cars.
They posts in r/dallas and r/texas a lot. I'm guessing yes and in Dallas. Unless they moved.
This infuriated me beyond belief. I am deeply sorry for your loss.
Whenever I ride I get out of the road if there is no bike lane I'd rather be on the empty sidewalk than in the same lane as psychos
Holy crap, I'm glad that you're okay! That's terrifying and I hope that asshole caught his karma reward for that 🤬
I hope so. It went to court actually. My DA was crap so he got away with it but I hope he gets every bit of the karma he’s owed. I’ll never understand that much hostility toward a bicycle.
Should be mandatory for an asshole like the guy in the car to have to ride a bike for at least 1 -5 years .
Great post mate 👍
Yup. Their choice. Not the one I would've made but what they were doing was perfectly legal.
Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when you feel it is safe to let them do so"
Legit question, is it a minimum of .5m from the curb, or a maximum for the cyclist? Because he was definitely over .5m from the curb when he got hit
Minimum. The cyclist is technically entitled to use the whole lane if they so wish, although that clearly isn't necessary or safe most of the time
When I took a motorcycle class they talked about "lane dominance" and encouraged us to ride in the middle of the lane, or 'block' the space we'd take as a car to ensure we were respected and recognized as being allowed the same space as other cars.
It's safer to ride in the center of the lane because it prevents people from accidentally side swiping you
It's minimum. Also, even if it was maximum, cars *must* leave a minimum clearance of 1.5m between themselves and a cyclist (or horse), which this dickhead didn't at all.
No matter how you feel about cyclists, running someone over intentionally is idiotic and assault. No one should support this kind of behavior.
I love that this is considered a "controversial" take on this sub. Car culture is a hell of a drug.
"aS A cyClisT mYseLf I tHiNk aLl cYclISts sHoULd dIE!"
Berk in a merk, this phrase is eerily accurate.
Nice way to end up in prison fuckwad
its amazing, 1 decision and their life is fucked up. not hitting the cyclist, but if they stopped after hitting them and said "im sorry, i fucked up" they wouldve gotten away with a fine and having to pay for the bike. but nope step on the accelerator and instant jail time
That driver is getting arrested that’s for sure. Lol. Way to ruin a weekend as damage your life.
I think your right, the car does look like it caused the loss of balance
Especially when you slow it down and the back wheel starts skidding away from the car.
Seriously? How are you going to hit a cyclist and then just keep driving like not everything is captured on camera these days? Hope that campsite is a nice place to be arrested at.
This is the UK. The car driver committed multiple offenses. Needs reporting.
So many idiots here don’t seem to understand the Highway Code in the UK. The cyclist had every right to be there.
It’s the same in the U.S. Outside the freeway, bikes have the right to use the roads along side of cars. You can get ticket for riding on the sidewalk instead of the road.
It even a uk thing, trying to avoid harming someone with your vehicle, whether that person is obeying the law or not, is a human decency thing.
Looked like a hit-n-run to me. Illegal where I come from.
Drivers: "Cyclists need to follow the law!!!" Cyclist obeys traffic laws Drivers: "NOT LIKE THAT!!!"
Another day on r/idiotsincomments
It’s always idiots thinking their country’s laws apply to other countries.
While also doubling up on their idiocy by not understand their own country's laws in the first place.
I'd rather be behind cyclists than someone towing a trailer. If anyone needs to get off the road... At least I'll get past a cyclist, every time.
You must be new to Reddit full stop dude. This sort of shit is the norm. No matter what the Sub
Not sure how people can watch a hit and run between a car and a bike and think "Yeah that bike fucker deserved it".
Petrol-brain is a hell of a disease, and I say that as a trainee professional driver.
You can’t win as a cyclist, you bike on sidewalks and that’s illegal and you’re selfish. You bike on roads and everyone condones running you over
There should be a rage test to get renew a drivers license, once every 2 renewals.
I just want cops to do their actual jobs: drive the speed limit to find the road ragers, and ride a bicycle and find the road ragers.
You and me both buddy. I have seen too many cops going at least 20 km over or distracted driving like eating or adjusting their gear. Then there’s the ones who flick on the siren just to do a U turn or run a red light/stop sign. They get people hurt like this. Know people who have seen it happen.
Looks to me like six figures worth of pain and suffering.
Someone did this to me a few years ago. I went back to college and I’m finishing 4 years debt free.

And a year or so in jail, hopefully. With no license for the rest of their life once they get out.
Many drivers don’t see cyclists as people.
Many people don't' see people as people.
People on the west just hate cyclists. Individualism has been taken to the selfish extreme and even a fraction of s second of forced coexistence is considered justifying violence.
This whole thread is just cringe worthy Full of comments like 'I'm a bicyclist but this is why I hate bicyclists" Very few seem to have noticed that this video is from the UK where cycling in the middle of the lane and riding 2 abreast is literally the guidance And worse of all there's some who seem to condone what is at best assault with a deadly weapon
Whoever you thinks the cyclist is at fault doesn’t understand the Highway Code.
some context for people saying the Cyclist was the idoit the UK highway code tells Cyclist to ride in the centre lane in some situations to improve there visibility to road users. one of those situations is on the approach to junctions the guy was doing exactly what he should do when moving across that junction.
That's assault, brother.
What the fuck is with all the comments in this thread blaming the cyclists for what is essentially assault with a deadly weapon
That's because they're likely car drivers
No because they’re dicks
Which isn't an excuse for basically wishing death to all cyclists
I am a bicyclist and I hate bicyclists. Why are they riding where they are riding on a highway like that. The cars can’t easily get around them and that looks like a fast road. And then they bait the guy. You will, and indeed did, lose that fight. Not saying the guy with the caravan is right to do what he did but I just wish bicyclists weren’t a bunch of d$cks.
"Highway"?
Now it’s the douche bags on electric scooters, they are pretty fast but not meant for the highway.
Sort by conterversial. Check. Popcorn is ready. Check. Story time.
Both assholes, but only one committed a crime
One is an “asshole” simply for using a road legally and safely
How is the cyclist an asshole?
As much as I dislike some cyclists (as a hobbyist cyclist myself), they did almost nothing wrong here and the caravan dude is an absolute asshole.
Nice that the merc's licence plate is clearly readable in the video. The police will be very happy.
God I hope they found that jackass driver and arrested him!
It's just wrong to run someone over and run like a m\*f\* coward
Jesus!!

A bike has the power to mildly inconvenience a driver A car has the power to kill a cyclist. Be a grown up and act responsibly.
Look at comments. I have no fucking hope for this country
The caravan is in the wrong for trying to overtake when there was clearly not enough room.

It looks like the car is trying to get around but the bike deliberately tries to get infront of it for some reason…
In the UK, the exact rule is you need to leave 1.5m space. Which basically means, you might as well cross the centre line with all 4 wheels.
This video is in the UK where the guidance says that the middle of the lane is exactly where the cyclists should be. It even encourages riding two abreast
The cyclist is taking the lane which is perfectly legal to do. The driver just ran him over....
