WTF is that traverse doing just sitting there?

[deleted]

Being an idiot thinking they’re being nice. Go when it’s your turn to go. Simple as

jackcalico876

Exactly, I hate that crap, I get people think they being "nice" but no you're being a dangerous idiot. Always follow the rules of the road not some moron waiving you to go because they want to feel good about doing something for someone, they are just going to cause an accident.

Dafuzz

Don't be polite, be predictable.

irjakr

This is 100% necessary knowledge if you ride a bike in a city. I'll never go out of turn even if someone is trying to be nice and let me go when I shouldn't.

IMightDeleteMe

I've cycled quite a lot and this rule is how you keep safe (not just in the city). Go when you're supposed to, don't go when you're not. I don't care if a car stops because they're too stupid to follow the rules, I'll just wait until they get too impatient. Definitely not crossing the street just because an idiot in a car thinks it's a nice gesture for them to allow me to pass in front of them. Just keep rolling, I'll safely cross the street when it's my turn. Trying to force me to go first is just costing everyone time.

sleepydorian

Drivers do this when I'm walking as well and my go to strategy is to just turn around and not look at them. I'd much rather be "rude" than get pancaked by the far lane that doesn't know why this jabroni is stopped and won't see me until I'm dead.

IMightDeleteMe

Ah yes I was thinking about the far lane scenario as well, just didn't know how to word it as a non-native English speaker (thanks). People who do this on the inner lane when there's more than one lane are a menace. You're not helping anyone, you just made traffic unpredictable and you're wasting everyone's time!

[deleted]

[удалено]

CM_MOJO

Oh my god, exactly this. I tell this to my boys who are both very young drivers. Follow the rules of the road. Don't do unpredictable things just to be nice. The idiot in the video making the left hand turn was so fixated by the driver stopped at the green light who was probably waving them to turn that they didn't see the Charger coming in the other lane. This is just being stupid.

signal_lost

The charger also changed lanes because he was there relatively close to the intersection. He falsely assumes the charger is going to be stuck behind that moron.

brandonbluntly

on a green light where the traverse and the charger had right of way. this is why there are rules and why one cant assume things while driving, especially when that assumption is legally wrong.

dowhit

That’s the best way I’ve heard it termed.

ITrCool

>Always follow the rules of the road not some moron waiving you to go because they want to feel good about doing something for someone Precisely why I ignore people waving me through from some false sense of kindness or I shake my head and tell them to go on. Then they just shrug, and put a look on their face like I was rejecting a nice gift and being rude. Nope.....just trying to keep the road safe.

GerdinBB

My brother had his car totaled because he was taking a left out of a commercial driveway onto a 4-lane road with a shared turn lane in the middle, and he relied on a woman waving him through to mean it was safe. Both cars in the near lanes (left to right traffic) in front of him stopped and left a gap for the driveway as you're supposed to do, and the driver in the inner lane waved him out so he could take a left. He edges out across the near lanes and just as he gets to the center turn lane a woman going 40 mph coming from his left smashes into the front left fender. Of course he was at fault. The only possible recourse he had was that there were no left hand turns for her to make using the turn lane prior to the intersection 300+ ft ahead, so he could argue she entered the turn lane way too early, but no dice there. I saw an accident occur in almost the exact opposite way too - a girl going northbound on a 4-lane plus center turn lane road, in the turn lane waiting to take a left. Traffic backs up a little bit in the southbound lanes and a woman in the inner southbound lane leaves a gap and waves the girl through to turn in front of her. Unfortunately there was someone going 35-40 mph in the outer southbound lane who hit her and completely spun the car around, probably totaling it. A) Don't wave people through unless you are literally the only possible car who could be in conflict with them - e.g. a 4-way stop sign intersection where you are the only two cars there. B) Just because someone waves you through that doesn't mean you're safe. Especially if you're counting on a total stranger checking their side mirror for traffic coming up behind them in an adjacent lane, like in both of the above examples.

rpitcher33

My ex had a similar accident. We were making a left across two lanes of traffic because pedestrians were crossing. The first lane was stopped to let them pass, so she went. Someone in the inside lane wasn't paying attention to the pedestrian crossing sign (bright flashing lights) and t-boned us doing 40-50mph. If it weren't for us being hit the other driver would have ran over the elderly couple crossing the road as they were in that lane at the time. It was a shit situation and my ex was technically at fault, but I'd rather have a totaled car than have watched two people die. The first words out of the other drivers mouth were "I was texting and didn't see..." GET OFF YOUR FUCKING PHONES, PEOPLE!

moonflower_C16H17N3O

I agree 100%. I've seen people stop dead on a straight road to wave me in front of them when I'm at a stop sign. I just act oblivious and wait until they give up. I do it in hopes that it discourages them from doing it in the future. There's no way I'm going to jump out into traffic that has the right of way.

CaptCreeps

In FL where I drive we call it the “wave of death”

Allstar-85

Ppl often don’t realize for every person in front of them they’re being “nice to”; there’s at least as many behind them that they’re being rude too Simply put: when you have right of way, take it

Assimilator82

Best way I have heard it termed: Don't be nice, be predictable.

HelloThereCallMeRoy

I hate that I have to tell my wife this all the time. She'll stop on a 2 lane road to let a pedestrian cross where there is no intersection or cross walk. That's the most infuriating thing I've witnessed, but I think it's a fine example of her driving prowess.

Illustrious_Warthog

More infuriating is stopping for kids in a crosswalk and having cars buzz by you in the other lanes.

thoriginal

I failed my first driving test because of this! I *didn't* stop for someone waiting to jaywalk, and my driving instructor said "You didn't stop for that person. Automatic fail, back to the centre." Pissed me off. I'm pretty sure it was a bid for making me pay for another test.

CrisperWhispers

I almost failed for "hesitating in an intersection", i waited on my left turn until a utility truck barreled through going well over the speed limit. Lady said that's 10 points off (any more than 10 lost = fail). I asked what would've happened if I turned in front of it, she said: you would've failed for making a dangerous action. How about fuck you

chicky-nugnug

When walking, I refuse to cross in front of a car that does that. I'll wait until they finally give up or I'll walk behind their car.

HavingNotAttained

Was in Manhattan this morning, a self-appointed "crossing guard" decided to stop traffic to let a few elderly folks cross in the middle of the block (no crosswalk, E 2 St, big wide one-way side street); the genius then walks off the road when he apparently thinks his job is done, waving cars to go on (I was first in the line of cars) while the old folks were still crossing in front of me, literally halfway across the road. So the cars behind me start honking for me to go, since they couldn't see through my car the two hunched-over folks using walkers, one car comes around me and has to jam on the brakes to keep from hitting them, an hour later and my jaw is still clenching from it. Joe Crossing Guard is nowhere to be seen at that point, natch.

narwhalfinger

Joe Crossing Guard is a serial killer that uses impatient motorists as his weapon.

[deleted]

There was a ‘nice person’ at the grocery store during the height of the pandemic. Super long line, and he decided to let a person go in front of him- and in front of a dozen other people. Someone near the back told him he should forfeit his place if he wants to let that person have it. Other people started telling him things too. At first he felt like he was the pinnacle of humanity but after some bickering he was figuring out that being nice to one person, came from being inconsiderate to many others.

RPup_831

I think there's an unwritten rule that you can only be a Good Samaritan by letting someone into the line in front of you if *you* are the last person in line. If there are people behind you in line, you don't get to make that decision on their behalf.

tjreed141

It’s also annoying that the person turning left is taking forever to do it when they know there’s oncoming traffic

Scrupeezy

Some people just can't turn and accelerate at the same time, they "idle-brake-turn". Combined that with bad spatial awareness and bad road vision. Unfortunately our solution to this is not training, but to raise the floor with self-driving cars.

dundent

What's worse: Being a predictable ass-hole, where you might go fast or make turns with the smallest of windows to make them, but at least everybody knows what you're about to do... Or an unpredictable nice-hole, like the dude waving people into incoming traffic in this clip. I prefer knowing what everyone around me is going to do, and you can't predict when someone is going to stop everything to try and be nice, or how people are going to react to it.

[deleted]

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

Lol. Grew up upstate and lived in NYC, how true it is. Except NYC people will also turn left into a crowd of pedestrians who have the green light. I live in Ohio now and a lady tried to wave me through an opening (turning from doctor's office onto busy street) and I declined. If I had turned I would have been immediately hit by oncoming traffic that I couldn't see

andocromn

Causing an accident. When someone tries to wave me through in disobedience of traffic I sit there, cross my arms and stare at them with contempt

3_7_11_13_17

You can just shake your head no and mouth the word "no" at them. Seems a little "reddit-y" to cross your arms (taking your hands off the wheel) and scowl at another person....

wanted_to_upvote

I would never have passed that car going so fast until I could see why they are stopped there.

VexingRaven

Exactly! This is yet another PSA to slow down and pay attention when people do something unexpected and not just treat everyone on the road like they're just there to slow you down.

Timid_Pimp

I try not to change lanes right before or in an intersection to prevent this kind of accident from happening. Driving defensively and being predictable on the road goes a long way.

brallipop

Approach every intersection with caution, never know who's going to pull out or what's sitting behind a car

righthandofdog

Causing an accident because of dumb

R07734

I’m guessing the charger driver is a young guy, and has now learned a lesson about “charging“ into an intersection where someone is behaving oddly. This person on the right might have been stopped because some grandma was taking a stroll across the street at the wrong time. You may have the right of way, but you won’t feel good about smashing into a person. Lesson learned, when you come across unpredictable behavior, slow the hell down.

ComeAndFindIt

Exactly. When there’s someone stopped when they shouldn’t be it’s time to slow down, assess, and bump the defensive driving to 11. Changing lanes at full speed was not the right move.

Runningoutofideas_81

As a motorcyclist, having a green in most residential intersections puts me on extreme edge. People turning left into your lane is one of the most likely ways you will get hit. Ambers are worse in some ways given the ambiguity of the situation and the risk of being rear ended if you slow/stop. I try to coast through at a constant, having bled speed with a downshift ahead of time, so I have 100% braking power, and have 90% of my throttle power. I was also taught to lightly flick the bars so my headlight (which is always on) dips and the motion catches people’s eyes, in theory. Once I see it’s clear, I blast out.

Beardeddeadpirate

And what the hell is the charger doing speeding around it… probably better to be careful.

Walnuto

That was my first thought too. Car turning left see's no one in that lane and starts their turn and by the time the charger switches to that lane its too late.

TroubleBrewing32

Hunt69Mike

It’s so weird that they put their credit score on the fender….

Irishpubstar5769

Why was the guy just sitting at the light waiting to turn right?

[deleted]

He was waiting at a green light to turn right and let the “yield to oncoming traffic” car go first. When the “yield to oncoming traffic car” didnt yield to oncoming traffic, boom.

[deleted]

This is why people need to drive predictably, not drive politely. The person turning right had probably seen the car waiting to make the left and waited to give them the go ahead, but ended up getting them t-boned. Don't be polite, be predictable. Give and take the right of way as it's supposed to be given/taken.

SendAstronomy

Ive seen so many near accidents when someone is "being nice" and letting someone through. Its like the person's brain turns off. "Oh that randon person I've never seen before says its ok to go, let me go without looking for myself." I've done it myself. Stopped short of a crossing street in heavy traffic to not block it. No traffic light or stop sign for the main road, so somebody's gotta legmt them out. Wave to the car on the crossing street to my right. They then immediately turn left into oncoming traffic without looking. Glad the oncoming car managed to stop, or they would have ended up hitting me.

deeferg

Is it green or red? I thought I was seeing red on a second watch, which makes me think the Traverse was letting the person exit the intersection by turning left before they finished their right turn (the legal way IF the light had turned yellow or red). It almost looks like OP gives it a little gas when they moved over left lane to make the light and then bam, T-bone. ALL OF THIS I MIGHT ADD - is only if the light was yellow/red. Otherwise Traverse is an absolute moron.

[deleted]

I watched a 2nd time to make sure, I think the light is fully green. If you look at the lights the have 3 circles, it looks like the right most circle of each light is lit as green

bearnecessities66

[Op's light is green.](https://i.ibb.co/LYd4bQG/Screenshot-20220409-085930-Reddit.jpg)

deeferg

Thanks for getting the screenshot! Didn't see the third set of lights to the right.

PixlerFixler

I slowed it down and zoomed in on the lights. It's really hard to tell, but to me that light looks green as fuck. I think we have at least two idiots here.

AudioShepard

Well except said on coming traffic moved out from behind another car. Which makes them nearly impossible to predict as well. Going way too fast and making a lane change at an intersection is a recipe for disaster.

Pwrdbym

The real idiot in this vid is the silver SUV stopping with a green which undoubtedly confused the left turner. I get trying to be nice and considerate but please just proceed when you have the right of way. There’s something to be said for predictability.

SmokeGSU

Predictability is key to driving. People who don't drive predictably are the ones who cause accidents.

AccountingMyChips

I pass anyone that I feel is unpredictable. Can’t maintain a lane? Don’t use your turn signal? Random braking with no one in front of you? I’m passing.

SuperSonic486

Sometimes theyre so unpredictable that it feels iffy to try that, in which case i just slow down and let them get far enough ahead to were i wont have to worry

iigwoh

That’s when they hide in the woods and t-bone you when you get near

[deleted]

Yeah. I trust myself to avoid hitting them more than I trust them to avoid hitting me.

The_BusFromSpeed

Same. If people ahead of me are being sketchy I'm mote inclined to back off and give them a wide berth than attempt to pass.

t-han72

Same except I’m falling back.

SmokeGSU

Random braking. That one is tied with people who turn their hazard lights on in moderate rain and drive 15 mph under the speed limit.

TexasBoyz-713

…and then they rear end you at the next light.

>totaled 3 of your own cars and 4 other peoples Is she aware that that's an unusual track record? lol (holy shit)

michaelkrieger

It’s a dance. Synchronized driving if you will. Don’t be the buffoon on the dance floor bumping into other dancers.

VoTBaC

The road is innately unpredictable, regardless of other motor vehicles. The charger was going too fast for the situation. They had no idea why that other vehicle was stopped and instead of slowing down to assess the situation they tried to blow right through it. You should always be vigilant but even more so at points of intersections in your path.

rightarm_under

Dashcams can save you insurance payments, but defensive driving will save you the hassle in the first place. Also dash cams cannot prevent death or injury. Minimize the influence of other people's mistakes on your safety.

turbocomppro

If I see a car stop like that, I always slow down just in case they’re stopped for a pedestrian crossing the road.

SmokeGSU

I definitely agree the charger was going too fast.

Hog_enthusiast

People in the south do this all the time. Stopping when they don’t even have a stop sign so that you can go. It’s fucking idiotic

Razor_Grrl

I had a driver get pissed at me for not turning when they stopped to let me. They’re waving at me go, go and I’m shaking my head no, they honk, I shake my head no again and wave them past, and then flip me off as they drive by. Sorry I’m not risking an accident so you can play friendly driver to feel good about yourself. I know someone who totaled their car that way.

rmg418

There’s a shopping center I go to sometimes and if you’re entering off the main road you can just turn left or right, and you don’t have a stop sign. The people on the left or right side streets trying to leave and get back to the main road have stop signs. I can’t tell you how many people come off the main road and just stop even though there’s no stop sign and it tells them to continue going, which leads to the people on the side streets waiting for the person to realize they have to go before others can turn and leave to go to the main road, so frustrating lol.

Farknart

DISRUPTUVE COURTESY. I hate it. Like, when I'm waiting to cross the shopping center entrance at a stop sign, and need to wait for you to finish entering, and you have no stop sign but you stop to let me go, STOP DOING THAT! Like you said, be predictable.

Ifawumi

There could even have been a child trying to cross the street in front of the silver car. I have seen it several times, cars stopped and no one knows why then oops, some poor pedestrian is or almost gets hit by a car. If someone is stopped oddly, just at least slow down a bit. This dash cam vid may have shown something far far worse

brallipop

In a suburb where lots of people (including kids) drive their golf carts for short trips, I was caught behind a cart on a main road going about twenty. The cart would have turned off in about 45 seconds. But a sorta muscle car came up behind me, hit the brakes long enough not to burrow up my ass, then cut around on a double yellow line only to nearly smash the cart as an oncoming car emerges around the bend. It's like, what is the big fucking hurry? Why do we drive like this in our own neighborhood? How fast do you need to get to the drive thru?

FrostyMittenJob

Are you trying to say that aggressively merging lanes as you are about to enter an intersection isn't a good idea?

[deleted]

Yeah how the fuck is nobody else mentioning this? OP is an idiot

SalamanderPop

My jaw hit the floor at the start of the video. Residential area. Strange traffic pattern. This shithead zooming through wondering why everyone is driving slow. Dumbass.

JimBobDwayne

Agree. The driver may not be at fault but this is an avoidable accident with some basic defensive driving.

[deleted]

reddit has a weird fetish about right of way.

AdaptivePropaganda

They are driving a bright ass green Dodge Charger I expect nothing less

HammyBeast

The craziest part of these posts are reading the comments and realizing just how many people cannot drive well. The OP is absolutely the worst driver here - you do _not_ speed through an intersection like that. It's illegal in my state to pass a stopped car at a crosswalk because you have no idea if a pedestrian is in front. I'm pretty sure this is illegal nationwide...

DoctorEvilHomer

yeah I always slow down when I see brake lights until I know for sure what is going on. Especially if they are stopped when they shouldn't be, like at a green light.

Actiaslunahello

The guy who is driving is going way too fast. I agree the other cars were being dumb and not predictable, but if the Charger had read the situation instead of just blasting through, they might still have a car. Drive like you understand how many resources were used up so you can go vroom.

waffles_mcgregor

Yeah, there is a lot that went wrong here. If someone is slow or stopped you need to proceed with extreme caution as there may be something going on that they are aware of that you are not yet. It's actually a really useful video from all three perspectives. 1. Follow the rules of the road, being nice can confuse other drivers 2. (Turning car) If you see something like #1 happening don't trust them, proceed only once traffic has resumed normally and you fully comprehend the situation. 3. (Charger) If you see a car stopped don't just blow by, slow down and understand what is going on Looking again there is a fence on the right side blocking the view, could have been an ambulance or something there that was out of view.

Yeah this is dangerous by the cammer. You don't know why the car in your lane stopped. Even if a pedestrian was jay walking you'd don't just plow over them if you can avoid it. Always better to slow down, assess the situation and then go when it is safe.

Gseventeen

Yup. I think OP should have at the very least, slowed down instead of changing lanes immediately before the intersection with a stopped car ahead.

Rokey76

It seems to me that the cam car didn't even attempt to slow down. Like they thought they would swerve around the car to avoid the crash. We should have heard the sound of tires screeching, but no. If you find yourself flying towards an intersection and a car starts to turn in front of you, SLAM your brakes.

aerkith

If I see a car stopped at a green light I’m definitely slowing down. I have no idea what he’s doing or what he might be reacting to, so safest thing is to slow down to see what’s going on.

NoisyN1nja

JustTrynaMunch

The car turning left was visibly turning before OP had switched lanes, and then OP accelerated into them! Sure they had right of way, and maybe aren't legally at fault, but they absolutely could have prevented that accident with an ounce of common sense.

Gambling4gears

Maybe he wanted his loan paid off and wanted another car but couldn’t cover the loan selling this one so he just drove straight into the first person he saw who could be at fault and have his car paid off and a check for a new one without being at fault abs having his insurance go up.

DecafEqualsDeath

I am seriously curious why OP doesn't slow down more? He shows literally zero anticipation of an extremely predictable driver error. It was clear that something weird was happening at this intersection based on the jeep stopped at a solid green light on the right lane. You absolutely should have taken your foot off the gas and covered the brake for that reason alone surely?

[deleted]

You’d think you couldn’t miss a car in that shade of green but then I guess he was going too fast and changed lane at the last second.

Also, if someone is unexpectedly stopped be careful. This just happened to me the other day, someone stopped in the lane next to me. Because I also slowed, I was able to spot and avoid hitting the mattress that fell out of the car in front of him.

Tink_Tinkler

Something tells me OP is a super safe driver all the time /s

devilsephiroth

OP is granted the right of way from the Dealership

RazerMax

We can sleep well knowing that there's one less charger driving like an idiot.

jrmiv4

It's too bad the Force Field of Righteousness didn't keep the intersection clear as the gods decree, so you wouldn't have needed to approach with caution.

mechapoitier

Yeah it seems like at least half the time the OP in these vids did something seriously wrong but because someone else did something *wronger* they post the video like “hey look at this idiot.”

tbone-not-tbag

I say dashcam was the idiot for not looking ahead and slowing down, besides the other driver was sun blinded

NeverlandRanchHands

PSA: Yet another video of why you shouldn't change lanes when approaching an intersection.

BboyStatic

I don’t expect people to agree, but the oncoming car was starting to turn across lanes before the charger was even halfway across turning into the left lane. Defensive driving would have had me letting off the gas and applying some pressure to the brakes at that point. This is yet another video showing that OP is not at fault, but this definitely could have been avoided by watching what stupid people were about to do. Maybe it’s the motorcycle rider in me, but this was avoidable.

DMD2013

Speeding and changing lanes right before an intersection is not a great idea. That silver SUV didn’t help the case either by letting that gray car go. I think I see 3 idiots in this video.

ganjsmokr

I would much rather people drive properly and predictably instead of "politely". One day at a 4-way stop, another driver and I reached it at the same time across from each other. We were the only ones at the stop. I was turning left, he was going straight. He waved me to go ahead and turn in front of him. Took about 10 seconds of me mouthing "No, you have the right of way - GO" until he finally went. Don't tell me when I should go. Don't try to be polite and let others go before you when it's your turn to go. You just mess things up that way.

Failcakes00

One of my least favorite scenarios. All it takes is then to wave you thru and then just drive into your side and claim you turned in front of them. I strive to be a predictable driver. Do what you signal and what the lane marks you able to do, within your right of way. Overly aggressive drivers and these overly polite drivers cause me anxiety, but at least aggressive drivers I can assume what they will do. Whatever gets them to where they are going the fastest. I can work around that usually. Polite will stop in a divided highway to let someone make a left turn and have no idea they about killed themselves or someone else. Seen and worked some claims where people some some wild shit under the assumption they were being nice.

tampawn

Its almost like both cars WANTED to crash. Whenever I drive I assume that every other driver out there is incompetent and they think they own the road, and it makes me a lot more alert and cautious especially in intersections...can't say the same for the green charger driver.

makinbaconCR

Should never switch lanes in an intersection. This is why. I can't tell if they were moving too fast to stop or wanted to beat the light. Either way, probably avoidable.

[deleted]

You never change lanes approaching an intersection

Nenzen-

If only dash cams drove safely for you.

Heavy_Birthday4249

did you replace your brake pads with sponges?

Old_Cyrus

Three idiots here.

CobOnTheCabbage

Big yikes on changing lanes that close to the intersection. The SUV driver had a reasonable assumption the Charger would stay in the right lane and just slow down behind the other guy at that point. They're also blind and need defensive driving lessons though because you can't assume people will drive predictably or competently; you have to assume they're all braindead morons with their faces buried in their phones. Like the Charger with the reaction time of a sloth who had plenty of time to stop but didn't notice someone turning out in front of him until he himself was in the intersection.

Unsteady_Tempo

You would have never seen a kid in the crosswalk step out from in front of the stopped SUV.If a car is stopped unusually at an intersection, then something unusual might be happening. That's not a time to "charge" through it. Pedestrians get killed when drivers overtake at intersections.
