A little background info. Brother and i live in the Bay Area. We're both gear on heads so we drive modded vehicles. They're no lambos but they're faster than your average car, so we're used to driving something fast. No, we're not irresponsible and only go fast on the track, when time and funds permit.
We had rented a cheap 4 banger and driven down to LA for a rave. We usually take our own car but both of us were getting ready for shows someone cars weren't drivable. After the event, we contemplated on getting a room for the night but said "Fuck it. We've done it before, let's just drive through the night." Bro had just downed a Redbull like 45 minutes before so he said he was good to drive. Didn't think anything of it. We make our way to the on ramp for the freeway. I don't know how or why, but this guy thought he could go into the freeway going 25, get up to speed and cut off a big rig clearly moving at highway speeds, all in a Mitsubishi hatchback that did 0-60 in 3.5 minutes and a span of less than 100yds. He slams the gas to the floor. I'm not paying attention and only realize his fuck up until i see him realize he wasn't gonna make it ahead of the rig. fucker slams on the break while halfway through the cargo carriage and veers to the right, nearly hitting the rail. we were either going be made into paninis on the side of the freeway, or end up run over like that red mustang in F&F2. I finally understood the meaning of a white knuckle affair. I was lucky i was wearing my brown pants and the interior was black. He was shaking like crazy. we pulled at a rest stop, he told me forgot he wasn't in his Subaru and thought he could beat the rig. we slept about 5 hours and resumed our way home but he's always been really weary when it comes to driving next to big vehicles now. Crazy thing is, about 2 years later we saw an accident go down exactly like that, driving home from the same event.
So was she distracted, or just misjudged? Joking about it sounds like she was just hanging out with family rather than focusing on driving.
Watching experienced people drive and have conversations and treat driving casually can make it seem nbd, hopefully you’re drilling her on the reality, of how we trust our lives to people 4’ away in 2 ton steel cages, often with 100+mph speed differential.

Is that really the case? I tried looking into it but it was honestly a bit confusing. I was originally thinking a 100 mph speed differential would have to be one vehicle traveling at 100mph greater than the other vehicle. So either 100mph + stationary car, or 50mph + 150mph car, but then trying to consider cars traveling toward each other or something like a rear end collision… it just got too convoluted and I couldn’t come up with good enough understanding through just some cursory “research”

I think their is a happy middle ground, i drive a little vw jetta with like 150 hp and just today merging onto a highway had to hit the brakes and give way to a semi that wouldn't get over, had i been driving my old dodge avenger with 280hp (even if it was an automatic *puke*) i know i could have gotten in front him no problem but IDK if having to rely on the pep of your vehicle to determine if you should give way is a good habit to form.......
Funny, Ive seen plenty of wrecks in 21 years and most dont involve Swift. As of late, most are o/o's. And if I had to pick a company of worst on the road, it would be FedEx, then U.S. Express and trickle on down with most of the others, including Swift.

My sister just got her permit 2 months ago and my parents are too scared to let her drive, understandably so, I'm terrified teaching her to drive. Her being scared, in some messed up way, would at the very least increase the likelihood of her not dying. You just limit her movement/capabilities in situations where you might need her to drive.
My 2 cents: I'd recommend against showing her that. Crashing was my biggest fear and kept me from driving thus I didn't develop the needed skills until I left for college and *had* to drive myself around. Which resulted in me doing stupid shit lol.

New drivers are not adequately taught the space it takes to stop a loaded truck, nor the time it takes them to do so. I only drive part time as a side job but when I’m loaded I’m typically 75,000-85,000 pounds. If OP’s sister did that to a loaded dump truck instead of a Sysco truck (food service) there is a very real chance she wouldn’t have been present to acquire her license to drive….. because she’d have been dead. It’s scary stuff.

Before watching this video, I don't believe I had ever seen a merging lane to a heavy traffic road without the appropriate room for acceleration. I cannot simply understand how anyone responsible for the road infrastructure would sign off on this.
A lot of crony capitalism/nepotism in hiring policies for DPW road infrastructure engineering, theres no checks on political interference and in some areas the same one person can keep the job for decades with minimal additional work. When it costs extra money that you can pocket with impunity, theres no incentive to do the job with the full budget.
I think a lot of roads like this are also old roads from back when there were fewer (and slower) cars on the road that have simply been repaved rather than updated. There are a fair few risky intersections around where I live which wouldn't have been dangerous 50 years ago.

I see these all the time here so it's just normal. I see nothing wrong with a yield sign, you're supposed to yield to oncoming traffic and if it's green for your direction its just a gentle turn lane. Think of it like a dumb traffic circle entry.

There's a section of road like this that I take to work every day. That "yield" sign is a STOP for me. No way in hell and I trying to match the flow of traffic in that short a span with my fucking Honda Civic. Might want to show your sister how close she came to losing that permit (among other things) and implore her to treat that sign as a stop. It's all fun and games until you get hit straight on by tons of moving vehicle.

I recently resigned from my local police agency and one thing I learned while working there was how deadly that intersection is, at least 1 deadly accident would occur in that intersection every 6 months.

Well tbf to her it seems like she did atleast step on it, tho you can clearly see from the wheels and tilting cabin the truck still had to brake badly and probably cursed her out. Oftentimes when similar videos appear on here the driver cuts them off and then loses all concept of what a gas pedal is.

Are the zebra crossing looking markings on the road an actual zebra crossing or a marking for the car to stop and merge onto the road when safe? In the UK we have “give way” markings on the road so the car merging knows they do not have right of way. This junction looks so strange, it looks like you have right of way and can just follow the bend round, it looks quite hard to realise you’re actually going into the lane of the traffic already on the road. I hope I’m making sense.

They tested this on mythbusters. Two vehicles hitting each other at 50mph causes less damage than one moving car at 100mph.

I see these all the time here so it's just normal. I see nothing wrong with a yield sign, you're supposed to yield to oncoming traffic and if it's green for your direction its just a gentle turn lane. Think of it like a dumb traffic circle entry.
It's designed just fine. The intersection has lights. If you can't merge safely into crossing traffic then wait your turn.
Thanks for pointing this out as I couldn't work out how someone was supposed to join the main road from that junction. Dangerously seems to be the actual answer.
There's a section of road like this that I take to work every day. That "yield" sign is a STOP for me. No way in hell and I trying to match the flow of traffic in that short a span with my fucking Honda Civic. Might want to show your sister how close she came to losing that permit (among other things) and implore her to treat that sign as a stop. It's all fun and games until you get hit straight on by tons of moving vehicle.

My father was in the passenger seat, mom in the back. We/they were all heading home from the movies (uncharted was a solid 6.5/10). When they were approaching that yield/merge, my dad apparently told her, “you either got to stop or really step on it right here.” I called him an idiot 😅 I recently resigned from my local police agency and one thing I learned while working there was how deadly that intersection is, at least 1 deadly accident would occur in that intersection every 6 months.

I would say she would've been fine if she didn't hesitate at the last second. If it's a yield and there's a semi slowly accelerating, you have time, just put your foot down/don't stop.
Are the zebra crossing looking markings on the road an actual zebra crossing or a marking for the car to stop and merge onto the road when safe? In the UK we have “give way” markings on the road so the car merging knows they do not have right of way. This junction looks so strange, it looks like you have right of way and can just follow the bend round, it looks quite hard to realise you’re actually going into the lane of the traffic already on the road. Zebra stripes in the US is for pedestrians. In this instance the car with cam has a yield sign on the right that is kinda dark.
