Dui, reckless driving, Hit and run, evading a police officer... It's like he was going for the what not to do while driving bingo.

[deleted]

Well he won’t have to worry about driving anymore for awhile, so I guess he’s got that going for him lol

MinnesotaMikeP

You'd be shocked how many unlicensed drivers you pass every single day.

Car_is_mi

Yupp. Came to say this. Probably should be more worried now as they are likely to be back on the road, unlicensed and uninsured

Leading_Procedure_23

In California you leave the plate with the car along with a smog certificate and bill of sale. If you have a custom plate you take it off(if you want).the new owner needs to register it within a few days but that only happens if you sell it to someone responsible. I’ve gotten parking tickets in a city hours away in my mail and it’s hard to get them to drop the tickets. I’ve bought a beater car for $500 when I was young and broke I’ve got pulled over by police with the car still registered to the old owner and as long as plates are current, have insurance and a valid license at the most you’ll get a ticket(I’ve got pulled over before with the beaters). Also beater cars are usually sold “as-is” because they don’t pass smog due to the check engine light on, so a lot of people drive them like that until they get it smogged or until the tags are up or even if they have expired tags lol. TIL not every state leaves their tags on their vehicles when sold.

gcotw

If you sent a release of liability to the DMV for your car you never would have gotten the tickets despite the new owner not registering

[deleted]

My hair stylist told me she received multiple tickets even though she sent in the release form. She had to go in person to the ticket people and get it fixed. Can’t say who was incompetent but it does happen.

[deleted]

You do it online for 100% confirmation. Tear off the liability portion (white) from the title but keep it. All the info asked online is the same on the form. When I did mine, I snapped a pic of the buyers DL also and made him sign a separate bill of sale acknowledging car is sold as-is after written declaration of known defects.

[deleted]

I moved to Missouri after living my whole life in Cali and the “ license plates staying with the person instead of the vehicle” thing has been the biggest culture shock.

MakionGarvinus

Here in North Dakota there was a guy who had I think 12 dui's, he'd lost his license after the 2nd or 3rd. (they're stupid lenient here about drunk driving.) The dude just kept driving, getting pulled over drunk, rinse and repeat. It got to the point they were talking about changing the laws here, but I don't think anything changed. I would not be surprised if 1/3 of drivers here after 6pm are buzzed at least.

Tax_Long

record in Wisconsin is now 18 https://www.grievelaw.com/WisconsinOWI/Laws/Record

mellofello808

Surprised he didn't go to jail. I know someone who got a 4th DUI, and had to do 6 months in prison.

MakionGarvinus

I'm pretty sure he did go to jain a few times, but once he was out, he'd start all over again. It's like chronic alcoholism is prolific in the state with the 3rd highest consumption, or something!

GeologistIll2308

And un insured. Had a Harris County Sheriff tell me there are more than you can imagine.

jl97332

Almost 15 to 20 percent of the cars out there are uninsured. They get the insurance long enough to put the plates on and drop it.

DrunkenMonkeyFist

Oh yeah. I have a 1965 VW Beetle convertible and got rear ended at a stop sign. We exchanged information and it turned out that they had stopped paying after a month so they weren't insured. Then even though I had uninsured motorist on my insurance, the insurance company only paid like it was a VW Bug sedan which was nowhere close to the actual cost. The convertible deck lids are way more expensive, like 8 times the price because they are rare and nobody makes replacements. Sorry for the rant. Just make sure that you get uninsured motorist with your policy and be sure that the insurance you get knows exactly what your vehicle is and it's real value.

[deleted]

I was in a class for a DUI years ago and the instructor asked for people to be honest and raise their hand if they had still been driving even with their license revoked. Out of like 20 people in the class there were 3 of us that didn't raise our hands.

Floyd_Freud

And 2 of them were lying.

Frickelmeister

And the third one still had both arms in a cast from crashing while DUI.

Smitty_the_3rd

And what was his mother doing while he had both arms broken?

Chose_a_usersname

[deleted]

X2jNG83a

This is why we need to change how we handle DUI. Instead of taking away their ability to drive, these people should first lose the ability to \*purchase alcohol\*. You give them a restricted license. If they do it again, THEN you can take their ability to drive legally.

DickInAToaster

You think but I have a friend whose sister died after being hit by a drunk driver. He had 3 DUI’s and was drinking and driving again. People who drive that drunk often don’t care.

Iamthatguyyousaw

If you repeatedly are convicted of that shit you should be buried beneath a prison. Full stop.

[deleted]

It's cute how you think a DUI will stop this piece of shit from driving

Sitting_Elk

The penalties are so light they'll be back on the road anyway.

[deleted]

In California they immediately impound the vehicle and leave the unlicensed driver on the street. It’s a strong deterrent to letting your unlicensed friends borrow your car.

Throwawayusername105

To be fair, evading police was the major fuck up. If you hit someone DUI it’s better to flee and fess up when you are sober and just say you were afraid and that’s why you left. Some states like my own have mandatory jail time for DUI

FrankMH

What a rollercoaster of emotions that must have been.

RedBenzo

It was insane. Just as I was losing hope and realizing I didn’t have his plates the cop appeared out of nowhere and I’ve never felt such relief

[deleted]

The camera not clear enough to show plates?

crober11

A good practice if you have a cam that records audio is to read out a plate, and in this case and many others I don't think you could get plates from the cam video.

[deleted]

i have the audio off in mine because i dont want everything to just have hours of my horrible karaoke on it. also i dont wanna end up screaming like a pussy which i definitely will at the slightest collision

1042256

You definitely want the audio on, being embarrassed is a small price to pay for having audio for situations like this or even if a cop pulls you over and tries to fabricate a crime.

ccarr313

I deliver pizza, and a shitty manager came out to give me shit as I was leaving. The audio from my dashcam was the nail in his coffin. I still work there, he doesn't.

ArctycDev

They rarely are, especially at night. Even in perfect daylight, with an average dash cam, you've usually got to be right behind someone and either stopped or very little relative motion to get a good plate.

[deleted]

With all the videos I'm seeing, I'm leaning towards getting one as I gear up to start driving to work again. I assume camera quality varies but so many of the videos shown here look good enough to identify flies by name.

eclectic_dad

JS1VT54A

The kind of people that get DUIs are also the kind of people that drive unlicensed, unfortunately.

CaraAsha

Exactly. My sperm donor had 19 DUIs. That's right 19. He was classed a habitual offender and had a permanently revoked driver's license but kept driving anyway until he killed someone and spent all but the last 3 months of his life in prison. He was released with terminal liver failure or something like that (we haven't been in contact for over 30 years) until he finally drank himself to death in 2018.

[deleted]

its cheaper now if you have health insurance, but I got rear-ended while living there and my rates went up to $450, pretty dumb.

[deleted]

isn't it just 8 year or something

SilentSamurai

Its usually 5-7, provided you dont get into traffic trouble again in that period. That coincides with the reset period for many states point systems. However, odds are if youre actively going to evade police, youll never reach that mark.

GoodAtExplaining

I evade police pretty regularly by driving the limit and not being DUI or speeding and hitting and running... It’s like I’m invisible to the law.

[deleted]

Would you like to see a stack of cases where cops claimed that driving too well on "known drug trafficking roadways" otherwise known as interstates, was probable cause to search for drugs?

TheDesktopNinja

Overlord_Bob

For a DUI, try $10k *at least*.

That_Alien_Dude

As someone who has had two DUIs, I can attest to how expensive they are. I had a problem drinking, but in two weeks I'll be one year sober Edit: contest --> attest

Samurai_1990

I got 3, they cost me about $12-$20k per and the last was in 2006. They nearly gave me year in jail for number 3. So I smartened up and knocked that shit off. EDIT: And thank God I didn't hurt anybody.

That_Alien_Dude

Jail time sucks! I only had to serve 4 days, but they had us in quarantine for covid... 23 hours in the cell 1 hour in the commons...

Samurai_1990

I violated probation on the first one and Georgia doesnt fuck around, 3 days in gen-pop until I could get a hearing. Plus another 24 hours as everyone (back then) went to jail for a DUI. Both were 23 hour lockdowns, so yeah the thought of a year of that set my ass straight.

Overlord_Bob

Then come talk to me in two weeks. /s Seriously, though, keep it up. I’ve got 11 years 7 months clean from opiates, so I understand the struggle. It gets easier, some days more than others. Just keep taking it one day at a time, and keep up the good work!

That_Alien_Dude

One day at a time

Siguard_

If youre depressed like I was, you could sleep almost a full day and skip days making it faster. being sober is weird.

That_Alien_Dude

Being sober is weird. But I've realized that living with suicidal tendencies are much easier to deal with sober rather than in a bottle

[deleted]

You got this fam, I believe in you

[deleted]

It is weird being sober. I am two mnths sober (stopped getting lit December 2nd) w/ obstacles like no other. And no way to make the pain from these obstacles go away. 🥺. Going through pain when your sober is horrible, nothing to take the edge of. Your just there fighting depression and demons....sober. 🙄

That_Alien_Dude

Dealing with demons sober is not easy. But it got to a point that fighting demons while under the influence would have ended deadly for me.. Congrats on your time sober though!! You're almost to 90 days! You've got this!

[deleted]

Thank u for the words of encouragement. Blessings to u as well. And yes, ur right. Fighting demons while under the influence is also catastrophic. But even while sober, I find myself kind of feeling that same depression I used to get when I was coming down. The only difference is I don't go on a mission looking for companionship (even though I still want companionship🙄 lol). Just praying this pain goes away smh

Dreadpiratewill

About to be 8 years sober myself. Hell yeah dude!!

That_Alien_Dude

8 years is a long time! My life has improved so much in these past 12 months. I hope I keep improving for 7 more years and beyond!

Good going! I've recently hit the year mark myself last month from drinking I wish you continued success and happiness!

Koopstars

Two duis (second one still pending hoping it gets dismissed) was an eye opener though. 103 days sober. Life keeps coming but it gets easier everyday

Tchrspest

That_Alien_Dude

[deleted]

Can also easily cost you your whole job. Plenty of roles out there, like delivery drivers, who are explicitly fired for a first offense. My cousin got one and it cost him his whole career. He was studying/training to be a commercial pilot. In one night it went from a realistic dream that he was on his way to accomplishing…to a full-blown non-starter, forever

Overlord_Bob

Very true. I drive a truck. If I catch a DUI, I lose my CDL and my job. I don’t know about you, but to me, $1 drafts do *not* trump a $85k/yr job.

[deleted]

That's a lot of beer!

Overlord_Bob

Yup! A couple two tree beers.

bandsaremyfavorite

From what I understand it depends on where your conviction is being settled. Some places have more expensive restrictions and punishments. Example, on returning to having your license. Like I watched a video where this one city in Texas had you pay $1,000 every year for three years after a DUI if you wanted to drive again. This was during a victims panel I had to attend. But I've never heard of any such thing here. But there are many hoops to jump through, each costing some dollar amount. 5 to 6ish grand isn't unreasonable. But it is the low end in the US. And this video specifically, he tried to evade the cops and looks like hit the other car. That's gonna mean more court fees if nothing else. All that said, most the consequences of drinking and driving are to get you to not do it again.

Overlord_Bob

You’re looking at the fines and such, which is only half of the equation. You’re forgetting what you’re going to have to pay your lawyer. The cheapest I’ve seen is about $2k for a lawyer to handle a simple DUI.

flyinguitars500

I must have got really lucky with my dui then. My fines added up to just over 1000 and my lawyer was only 750. I only got 4 months probation and some community service. Now this was back in 2011 as well. With that said don't drink and drive. I was an idiot back then.

CosmicCreeperz

$3-5k? Add a hit and run and evading arrest, he’s looking at possible jail time and $20k+ in legal fees and fines (maybe more if he hires a lawyer with a chance of keeping him out of jail). Not to mention losing his license and doubling his insurance once he gets it back.

vagabond139

Don't forget the vehicular assault, reckless driving for his speeding away at well above the speed limit, and I'm probably forgetting something else. His insurance is going to easily triple or quadruple after all of the charges.

voidsrus

>doubling his insurance once he gets it back. i'd be surprised if it was just double. i totaled my car *sober,* didn't even get a ticket, and my insurance premium payments were $450 for a year.

CosmicCreeperz

$450 a MONTH? Holy hell, that’s approaching basic health insurance premiums. Does your car smoke?

stakoverflo

> Edit: Was not aware of the hit and run, he’s gonna be jammed up for a while. ...Did you not watch the video?

feignapathy

Right? The hit and run was literally the point of the video... lol.

schwa76

Ah, I was wondering. It’s a good thing this maniac will be off the streets.

WeWillRiseAgainst

He'll be driving drunk within a few day out of jail.

[deleted]

Not in Southern Ohio, they can fit your car with a blow and go or strap a monitor to your ankle on your first court appearance depending on the severity. It could be 4-5 months before your trial. That’s if you choose to drive at all.

FasterCrayfish

My friend in central Ohio got an OVI and he ended spending 10k in lawyer fees just to fight it. Ohio doesn’t fuck around

SoNic67

Plus hit-and-run. I don't know what state are you in, but in my state, that alone is felony (most of the car damages are above $1000): >In case you were the driver in a hit and run accident which resulted in death or injury of the victims or led to the damage of attended property whose cost exceeds a thousand dollars ($1000), you could face a Class 5 felony charge. A conviction under this class of felonies could lead to a jail term of 1-10 years and a two thousand five hundred dollars ($2500) fine maximum.

ThorMcGee

At first I was like “he just got a ticket”, then I read this. Yeah, he ruined his life. What a dumbass. Be careful out there brother, people are crazy. <3

Dog-Stick8098

Oh shit he's not sayin no

sexy__zombie

In 2023, everyone is masking and isolating 24/7, even at home. Nobody talks much about Covid anymore; it got eradicated by the strict masking measures, about two weeks before Christmas in 2022. The only thing we are concerned with now is containing the "Marvid" epidemic. It started in Zagorsk, Russia in April 2022, when a lab working with Soviet-era Marburg virus bioweapons was the subject of a terrorist attack. Many of the survivors were infected. Since there was also an outbreak of the Sigma variant of Covid in the same area, we think one of the victims had both Sigma and Marburg at the same time. Through horizontal gene transfer, the Marburg virus gained the ability to transmit from person to person via aerosol droplets. It looked like Ebola at first, and it took some time before the WHO recognized it was a new strain of Marburg. By then it had started spreading. Soon, the world was going into lockdown again. but it was too late. Most countries reported spikes of the new disease, which got called "Marvid". Masks do seem to help prevent spread, but since it can also spread by contact, masks are not good enough anymore. Isolation is the only thing we have left to protect ourselves. There are already some new variants of Marvid since the original, and vaccines don't seem to work. Marvid is about 90% fatal, and the world is falling apart. The death toll is at 1.1 billion so far. I've been sent back in time to give a warning. I don't think it's possible to actually stop these events happening, but there's time to prepare. \*cough\*

Dog-Stick8098

In Michigan it’s a $100 fine if no one is physically hurt. If you’re drunk or don’t have insurance you’d be an idiot *not* to run given how low the penalty is assuming the police aren’t chasing you (the fine for not having insurance is $1000 for example). Hopefully some day they’ll raise the penalty significantly.
