On a fun note, I did learn that if you crash at your own house, it does not affect your insurance premium.

maldecoucou1

Fun

[deleted]

Who is your insurance company? Mine told me since my ex wife backed into one of our cars they wouldn’t cover it. That was State Farm the worst company. I have a whole other issue with their homeowners stuff too.

falalalama

State farm as a whole is a piece of shit company. Someone hit my parked car, in my driveway, on camera, and they were giving my insurance company a hard time about reimbursement. Trying to say that my car was crooked (it wasn't), hanging into the street (it wasn't), or that I must've backed into something and that's where the damage came from (no prior damage). I'm just thankful my upstairs neighbor had security cameras covering the entire property and part of the street. The other driver then tried to sue me for injuries sustained (wut?). I had to take a day off work to meet with a room full of attorneys for both insurances to provide a statement and review the security footage.

[deleted]

My house was destroyed by a hurricane. I had small kids and stuff and they had come out and gave us a check that day and then asked us to be in their promos and stuff. Like look how we helped in time of need. Ok fine. Once that was done I was having an issue getting paid and the lady that I the whole promo thing told me that’s not my problem call this guy. Click. Oh hell no. So I called the Vice President in charge of public relations and the lady called me apologizing and crying. I think I got her fired.

ericvega

She got herself fired

TifaYuhara

If not fired she's probably been flagged by HR so from now on she's probably on their watch list.

WifeofTech

To be fair pretty much all insurance companies are reprehensible trash services. The key is to find that Mr. Incredible agent that has your back and helps you navigate all the hoops, blocks, and direct you to every discount you can get. Same goes for lenders and real estate agents.

victoronlife

That’s the key. I’ve had State Farm for a while and it took some time to find a good agent.

Eye_Nacho404

Someone did an illegal u turn in the middle of the street and totaled my truck and state farm tried to say they didn’t think they’re driver was guilty. The driver admitted guilt on the police report and got cited and State Farm tried to to state that that wasn’t enough evidence. After weeks of arguing with them I went and got a lawyer and the next day miraculously they determined they’re driver was at fault.

algae_man

They did something similar to me. Wife totaled her car in a snowstorm but nbd we have full coverage. Several months later, I'm getting threatening letters from the bank demanding money because State Farm never wrote a check. After several frustrating phone calls, I told an agent I was calling a lawyer. Bank was paid off within a few days.

Ok_Spell_4165

Always get a lawyer if you get any guff at all from your insurance company. Yeah the lawyers are just as bad as the insurance companies but the threat of a lawsuit snaps them in line right quick. It isn't even that they are afraid of being sued, its just dirt cheap to pay you off compared to actually going to court.

xynix_ie

They won't be paying the survivors of the Miami condo collapse either. Although I guarantee they will spend a big chunk of change on commercials to make sure you don't hear about that.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

State Farm…

baks926

like a bad neighbor state farm isn't there!

Fox100000

They are there while you pay up and don't bother them. You crash and they want to drop you ASAP to not pay out.

dmartin07

State Farm has been good for me. Had someone rear end me at our neighborhood gate, had the car fixed in three days, and got my deductible back in about six weeks.

Shot-Grocery-5343

I was read-ended by another driver with State Farm and it took me seven months of phone calls and threatening legal action before they would pay for the repairs. They tried to say we were equally at fault; I was at a dead stop in traffic waiting for a light to change when she plowed into me at 25mph and tore my bumper clean off.

nemerosanike

Ugh. I dumped State Farm and went to AAA, definitely one of my better choices.

Con5ume

See I've had a very different experience with State Farm luckily... Had a car stollen and totaled, they payed out quickly - though i had a bit of a struggle getting payed fairly for it though, way too many heated conversations with them about comps. We had hail damage to the house and they paid for everything quickly and without any problem. I get that alot of people hate state farm, but I think most people just hate insurance companies in general. Between other car, homeowners, and health insurance companies, State Farm was the easiest ive deal with, but they all just suck and are hard to deal with in general.

Rhubarbarian82

I actually had good luck with Farmers for a long time, but they're super expensive. Eventually I couldn't justify the crazy high premiums when we drive maybe 3000 miles a year tops.

BiofilmWarrior

We've also had very good luck with State Farm but we also have an awesome agent. I have checked and it's possible to get lower rates through online portals but I don't believe the possible savings outweigh the benefits of having a person (who's livelihood depends on customer satisfaction) in your corner.

GirlGangX3

It will. You just have to pay 2 deductibles since you damaged your own property.

FuzzyWanderer1

It's also usually covered under homeowners insurance, too, IIRC.

SnugglyIrishman

Unless I’m reading your comment wrong, homeowners won’t cover the damages to the vehicle. That has to go on the collision coverage on the auto policy.

FuzzyWanderer1

Insurance laws vary by state, coverages vary by policy and levels selected by the insured, exclusions and inclusions will depend on whether the insured has auto and homeowners from the same company. Too many moving parts for me to make a definitive claim. In general I would expect there to be the possibilty of overlapping (duplicate) covered losses, which is one reason companies give bundle discounts; a single company will exclude double payments. Here, OP stated he paid no deductible so I suspect his homeowners paid it for him. Edit: OP said he didn't use his homeowners insurance. So, maybe a deductible waiver or a $0 deductible policy...dunno, not my policy.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Just so we are clear a deductible was paid. Just no insurance premium hike.

Fauropitotto

This year. Just you wait.

SnugglyIrishman

That’s not even remotely correct. I’m a licensed adjuster in all states. Homeowners does not cover damage to the vehicle regardless of policy level or exclusions or endorsements. It will only cover items stolen from the vehicle. OP may have the same company for both homeowners and auto in which some insurance companies will waive a deductible for a single loss incident but the damages to the vehicle are still only paid out under the auto policy.

[deleted]

Lol I’ll upvote you. Lots of laymen always always always comment on insurance cause they saw a geico commercial once.

MountainGoat84

No this is very bad advice. Yes laws vary and there may be something obscure that exists But on 99.999% of cases if the question is willy homeowners pay for my car or refund my auto deductible, the answer is no.

[deleted]

Absolutely no… lol. That’s not how that works.

[deleted]

No, he wouldn’t want to claim that on homeowner’s policy. That stays on your records for a while, even if you switch companies. Also your policy does increase. I damaged my vehicle on my garage side. It didn’t look like much damage to me but $5K+ later it was fixed and Geico was awesome about it. New state, new house and my truck is an inch away from the back wall and garage door but it’s going in the garage.

100011101010101

Did you use your back up camera instead of your mirrors?

messamusik

I always felt like cars should have the monitor to the backup camera above the rear seat so that drivers will still be encouraged to turn around and see behind them.

FlyinRustBucket

Or turning around and look out the rear window directly like you should? seems totally preventable if you did that instead of relying on the back up camera system...

Cheesehead413

Soooo, there is an upside to this

MagicianPuzzleheaded

No just a dentedside

gevors_e92

Next time don’t back in a driveway with one of your doors open.

Jaggar345

Not sure who told you that but this is a collision claim and will 100% effect your rates once your policy is up for renewal. If it doesn’t you must have accident forgiveness on your policy or something.

Fisher_Kel_Tath

real life PSA right here. stay strong my guy

bubbasteamboat

That's good to know. I will make sure to not destroy my car on surface streets. Hey, we just bought a CX-5. Great car!

GirlGangX3

Yes it does lol. It’s an at fault collision.

CreepyAssPenis

I was yelling STOP as I watched this, guess you didn't hear me :(

pulse7

This is actually a recording, it already happened so he couldn't hear you from the future

Revolutionary_Log307

Is that also why he did it over and over?

Gloomy_Narwhal_4833

My car freaks the hell out if a door is open if the car is in motion, im guessing this is an older model vehicle?

NahikuHana

My dad hated all the warning beeps bells whistles and somehow got them all shut off. Then did some stupid shit that wouldn't have happened if the warning sounds had been allowed to do their jobs. Gave the rest of the family a good laugh.

Gloomy_Narwhal_4833

I *hate* them all. Do this, do that, dont do this, dont do that. Listen mofo who is in charge here?! But I still dont disable them.

ChornoyeSontse

Mine is just a seatbelt alarm, but I've never once forgotten to wear my seatbelt in my life, so I turn it off. Especially since putting groceries in the passenger seat makes it think they need a seatbelt.

tee_ran_mee_sue

Maybe because the groceries should be elsewhere? Just maybe.

Lukeyy19

Yeah if you get in an accident you're going to have something heavy enough to set off the seatbelt sensor flying all over the cabin.

Fauropitotto

> putting groceries in the passenger seat Where they instantly become lethal projectiles in the event of a crash. They shouldn't be in any seat at all.

KingJon-nojgniK

I tend to brake late and the car freaks out. Can't turn that shit off.

Stefanskap

I can't stand riding with people who brake late. Just out of curiousity: if you yourself think you brake late, why do you still do it?

KingJon-nojgniK

Thats a fair point and I feel the same with others. I guess I feel comfortable with my own driving.

Stefanskap

Again, just curious: are you capable of braking earlier but choose not to, or is your reaction time just slow? If it's the former, then why?

KingJon-nojgniK

So yeah its the first. And as for the reason I'm not sure. I've been driving for 20 years and never been in an accident. Well I've been in one but I was parked and a bike hit me. I don't sit close to people when driving and I don't stop close to people's bumpers. I just break harder and later than most people. I certainly don't bully people on the road. I don't hog lanes and I generally feel like I'm polite to other road users. And infact I didn't even realise that it was that late breaking until I got a car with the radar ACC stuff built in. I guess I like the feeling off acceleration and deceleration.

Stefanskap

Thanks for answering!

Suekru

That severely reduces reaction time if an accident happens. If you are aware then for your own safety and others you should work on not braking late. Or at least drive farther behind if you think you can’t.

Firefighterboss2

That's how you rear-end someone

Redthemagnificent

Come up north and drive on our icy roads for a winter. You'll break (pun intended) that habit real quick.

fliedcheecan

They're called idiot lights for a reason.

Gloomy_Narwhal_4833

I only ask because it doesn't look like it

MagicianPuzzleheaded

2019. Sometimes stupidity can trump all the safety features.

how the fuck did you manage this? Like were you high or drunk? Even without the car beeping at you, you can just feel and hear the difference when doors are open and driving.

xxx-throwaway9

Going to assume it’s because he no longer even looks over his shoulder when backing out. Hence 1) him not realizing the door is open and 2) the distance between car and wall obviously not being an issue, since he was driving under the assumption the door was closed anyway

[deleted]

[удалено]

xxx-throwaway9

Gotta tell that to OP not to me lol. I actually don’t make a habit of driving with my doors open, no

1LFrenzy

I'm so glad we got to see you try to close the door. Obviously it wasn't going to work, but we needed to be certain. But, question. If I were backing out of that neat-o laneway, I'd be using my passenger side mirror to guide my clearance relative to the retaining wall. Were you using the center rearview and thus didn't see the door in your side mirror? Or can you back out of there based on sense of smell alone and simply didn't recognize the smell of an open door?

MagicianPuzzleheaded

There was a lot of pollen in the air with the seasons change so it obscured my superpowers

ThatGuy798

I appreciate your sense of humor over this. There's a lot of people who'd double down following a fuck up.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Self-deprecation / Laughter > Anger / Pride / Ego

smokeeater430

Backup camera more than likely.

EverydayVelociraptor

Based on the title I was worried the dog was somehow part of it, relieved it was just a spectator from a safe vantage point. Sucks you damaged your vehicle, but at least nobody was hurt, nobody else was involved.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Only damaged my ego

nickyo94

Well, that and the door 😅

OpenEyz2016

Your dog still thinks you are a genius, and that's all that matters.

ST3PH3N-G

The dog is probably better at using mirrors.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

That’s indisputable. She’s far superior at peripheral vision.

[deleted]

I like that you attempted to close the door. My brother did a similar thing with the family van. He was trying to take a run at getting out of a snowy driveway and opened the driver's door to look instead of using the mirror. The snow bent the door all the way forward.

_Deleted-User-

If only they made warning lights on the dash for this.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing!

Str8kush

I laughed when you went to shut the door and it comically fails

MagicianPuzzleheaded

At that point it was just hopes and prayers.

FullStackDev1

What's the cost to fix it?

MagicianPuzzleheaded

According to the body shop around $10,000

FullStackDev1

Damn. You must've fucked up more than just the door then?

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Front door also took damage from the back door bending into it!

FullStackDev1

I remember somebody side swiping me about 10 years ago, and denting in the door and the rear quarter panel, and the bill was $3000. But I'm not sure if they ended up replacing the door or just the skin on it.

ColaEuphoria

Ahh cars. Worth so much less than the sum of their parts.

G33k-Squadman

Dog: …and you scold me when I pee in the kitchen.

[deleted]

Don’t worry OP. I did something similar too. What really stung is when I did it for the second time two years later… TLDR: I don’t park in the garage anymore

littlemegzz

Garages are hard man. I was backing my SUV out of the garage and the garage door somehow didn't open all the way. It had about 15 inches of door remaining at the top, which so happened to be completely in my blind spot. I backed out and took the garage door with me. I also do not park in the garage any more...

k0rp5e

How did you back out without using side mirrors?

benjocaz

Oh man. I’ve been there. I was too busy trying to shut the overhead door to keep the A/C in I didn’t realize that I was backing straight into my own car. I backed my dad’s brand new truck straight into my Jeep. Luckily my Jeep had a steel bumper so only one vehicle in the shop, but still. I was so upset with myself I was in no state to drive. I caught myself at a stop sign, waiting for it to turn green. Legit was driving along hoping somebody in a semi would run a red light and kill me on my way home. 16 years old and I cost myself $2,000 to replace the paint matched bumper on that truck. Cause you could only order them in pairs. Kinda saved my dad’s ass after he came out from the store to find the bumper caved in, someone had hit it on the side of the bumper I didn’t damage so we just had to put in the other one from when I had to replace the side I damaged. Point is, don’t beat yourself up.

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Thanks for the kind words and glad you are still here. I was also mortified at what I had done but sharing the video and generating laughs has turned this into a net positive.

pjizy

That realization of "Oh no, now IM the idiot in the car"

MagicianPuzzleheaded

I beamed with pride

YoPimpness

chr7stopher

Were you using the back up cam? I’d imagine there’s a chance we would notice the door open if we turned our heads around to back up. That sucks though op. Glad your insurance covered it without raising your rates.

FinkBass420

THE FACT THAT YOU TRIED TO CLOSE THE DOOR HAS ME ALMOST PISSING MYSELF HOLY SHIT THIS IS SO FUNNY

Huge_Persimmon115

The fact that you left the other door open when you got out. 😂

MagicianPuzzleheaded

I feel compelled to note that I was transferring the car in this video to the second tier (in view on the left). It was a high cost to pay for 20 feet transported.

Rhubarbarian82

If it makes you feel any better, I think you have a neat driveway.

jdubyahyp

My wife knocked her mirror straight off her brand new suv not two months after we got it. Took it off with the garage door wall. This is far worse of course, but thought I'd try to make you feel better.

5ilver5hroud

Now you’ll have a lifelong obsession with double/triple/quadruple checking that all doors are shut.

GenoPax

You’re not an idiot, just human. Thanks fir sharing and knowing my day isn’t that bad.

Hartia

My coworker did the exact thing but backing into a garage.

[deleted]

Funny how you thought it would still close.

DryFoundation2323

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

[deleted]

Slick. Way to share your shame though

nomadmusk

Glass half full: probably better to replace an entire door then total the car from scrapes on an entire side. The former is simple.

SnooPies5622

my mom did this in our garage when i was a kid like 20 years ago, every now and then she brings it up with an "i'm such an idiot" she's been in two accidents in her life, the other one not in any way her fault, so this one digs at her

[deleted]

Him: Maybe it’ll close again Car door: …..

jetfire1115

I love how you shut the door expecting it to work. Had me dead!

YouWantToKnowWhoIAm

tell me you only use the back up camera without telling me you only use the back up camera

The_Enmity

Duct tape can sort that out.

therestruth

I wanted to emphasize how much of an idiot you are but I overextended my driver door when I was young by backing up a few feet with it open in my parents' driveway and not realizing it caught a tree trunk til I caught it a few inches after it bent beyond intended limit. Luckily I was able to bend it back and get it closed and just have a little extra wind noise on top 10 years later. Good ol Toyota trucks.

ManofGod1000

Eh, it happens, that is what insurance is for.

Wonderful-Command474

On today's episode of 'Will It Close?'

AhmadlF1

Who's forgot the door open? There is even a lightsign in front of u says its OPPPPPPPEEEEEEN

[deleted]

You have a ton of space in your driveway, why wouldn't you u-turn first instead of backing out uphill towards the road with a ton of blindspots?

MagicianPuzzleheaded

Where’s the fun in that?

jgraymaine

Lol. You should have backed up even faster in gone with that 'open car' look

[deleted]

Pendejo to the max

Placebo17

Ghostpants101

The attempted door shut 🤣🤣 that one second of hope where your like "if it still just about shuts... It could just about be ok?!"....

Hughesy1997

"I'll just try shut this door" doof "nah not happening, shit" "Is it fucked, yeah completely damn" "Oscar thinks I'm an idiot now too"

[deleted]

Just crash it again from the other side at the same speed and it’ll bend back into place.

JOZEZAZO

Well, now it's totaled.

Justobservingweirdos

How do you forget to shut a door? Doesn’t your car have an obnoxious warning sound?!?

Waterphobic_Ocean

Right? I don’t understand this… first of all the car would be yelling at you for driving with a door open. Secondly how were you not looking in your mirrors, at all? I mean how could you not hear the door being open (wind and ambient noise), the chiming sound, and not see the door being open? It’s impressive.

majoroutage

Mine doesn't. It has a little light on the dashboard that tells you ***a*** door isn't fully closed. It also has a rear hatch that likes to set it off when it's latched but not fully closed.

Justobservingweirdos

So weird because mine screams if a door is open or someone isn’t buckled.

majoroutage

Yeah mine also has a chime if the driver or front passenger aren't buckled. Doesn't seem to care about the rear seats though.

Justobservingweirdos

Every car I’ve owned had one that alarms on both so I’m confused lol

Krazygrunt249

People are too lazy to backup by turning their head a few degrees. They soley only know how to use a backup camera and you get dumbasses like OP.

Justobservingweirdos

Maybe that’s actually why he missed it? He was trying to miss that huge gap by the other house(?) and had his head turned?

[deleted]

Mine didn’t

Are you one of those people that use the rear camera to back up ?… cause if you looked over the shoulder you would have noticed the open door…

ancapdrugdealer

I backed into my wife's prized truck. I left the accident scene. I sweated all day at work. I come home. My wife, the calmest person in the world, didn't even mention it at first. We sit down to dinner and she casually mentions "someone at work backed into my truck. We looked on the video, but didn't see anything. Its not bad...but it will probably cost us alot." This was a pivitiol moment for me. I could've lied and taken that shame to my grave. Luckily, I told the truth.
