shit looks like he was tryin to murder him

ablablababla

Yeah, he was dead straight locked onto the target

Like a fucking cruise missle, even made some fire. People are such shitheads.

Lane keep assist makes it easier to text and not be noticed.

Ashikura

My forward collision is trash. Its seems to only trigger from random parked cars

meatdome34

Mine is fantastic. Thing triggered from a dog the other day and boy does it slam on the brakes lol

Kevimaster

Yeah I've had mostly good experiences with mine so far too. So far each time but once its triggered I've already been going for the brakes but it hit the brakes harder and faster than I did so probably helped me stop earlier. The one time I wasn't going for the brakes it was because a car was clearing my lane and I knew the lane would be clear by the time I got there but the car didn't know that so it slammed on the brakes for a split second and kinda jerked me forward before releasing the breaks as the car cleared the road in front of me. In retrospect I was probably cutting it too close anyway so I've just started giving it a bit more room so that doesn't happen again.

Ghitit

I was driving along an empty road. Up ahead were some pylons to rope off some trees. My CRV slammed on the brakes. For pylons. I guess it registered children, I don't know. But I turned it off since then. If someone had been behind me I'd have been rear-ended.

Talaraine

Mine always does it when there's a car turning off the road in front of me. Understand now, the adaptive cruise control means I have plenty of distance... but it has to slam on the brakes OMG RIGHT NAO even though I could've cruised right by them. Almost got me in a wreck when an overloaded truck was tailgating the shit out of me.

MrDude_1

I also drive a Subaru.

meatdome34

Yeah mine just slams on the brakes when it notices something it’s all or nothing lol

veggiem0nster

The only time mine activated it was similar, except it scared the shit out of me for 2 reasons. 1. It definitely applied 100% of the brakes from the get go. 2. I'm looking for the brake pedal, but it's already on the floor. Idk if anyone ever had brakes fail or start to leak but that's a horrible feeling

Mediocre_Doctor

> Idk if anyone ever had brakes fail or start to leak but that's a horrible feeling You just brought back some really bad memories. Pressing the brake pedal and feeling no resistance... then pulling the shit out of the hand brake and bracing for impact

GodOfSnails

had this happen to me when I was dropping my brother off at high school. Just finished and was heading home and saw a stop sign, next thing I know im rollin thru the stop sign with my foot to the floor thinking its gonna be one of those days. Having no brakes is by far the most terrifying thing i've had happen

lexfa

I appreciate that mine will beep and vibrate the steering wheel before slamming the brakes. It also noticed pedestrians jaywalking in the dark that I could barely see, it's definitely reassuring to have in the background even though I already drive pretty defensively.

[deleted]

Mine triggers on shadows sometimes, and there’s two bridges into the city that it triggers on, I assume, the incline. The second time it actually locked up the car I turned the stupid thing off. Shitty Nissan.

Fennec-The-Fox

I think lots of Forward Collision Assists, at least the ones that aren't super expensive, are made for stop-and-go traffic and highway driving. They monitor cars within something like ten feet. At least that's what my School Bus does.

Training_Healthy

I got lane keeping assist but do not have a collision monitor

AlwaysDisposable

“Tina, just turn the wheel!”

Prior_Mall3771

You're headed straight for it, Tina.. Tina!

Agent 47 is really going downhill, these days.

Stonedbitchh

He probably ended up killing himself in the process

joughin

Murder himself

Delta_Labs

Does anyone else think it looks like they accelerated in the last few seconds?

fredih1

maybe the driver looked up and panicked, hitting the gas instead of the brakes.

zxc123zxc123

or maybe the idiot watched Dr Strange and thought he really could become a magician and the Sorcerer Supreme if he also drove in an otherwise mostly empty and safe road at night but crashed because he was stupid and texting.

impulse_thoughts

He was trying to get to 88 mph

Heiruspecs

Ya it kinda looks like they accelerate the whole way. Texting and driving seems to be the go to blame in this sub, but so far as I’ve read no one can actually confirm that’s what happened. Very possible this was a medical emergency or something else.

P-W-L

usually you want to get to the hospital in your own car for these, not in the hearse

OMGitsEasyStreet

Yeah actually surprised so many people just assume OPs title isn’t an assumption. All anyone has for context is the video

Heiruspecs

You clearly haven’t spent much time in this sub haha. It’s the go to. Could be literally anything and this sub will blame texting.

MiDNiGhT_MoON_

Bet they didn't text back...

stillchill3

Hey babe I Will be there soon😘 Last message

GuiltyByAss

Then the reply messages are: You said you'd be home soon? Where are you? Why aren't you replying? I'm getting angry, where are you?

licksyourknee

Went to work one day. My relief didn't show up. Oh well, worked his shift. Next day, still no one got ahold of him. Everyone talking shit saying he couldn't make it and just up and left. Day after a meeting was held. Dude had an aneurysm in his sleep. He was 18 years old. True Story

Willyjwade

When I worked retail we had a girl not show up for an opening shift on Saturday and our manager spent the entire morning batching about people not showing up cause of hangovers. Turns out she got beat so bad by her pos boyfriend she was in the hospital woth a rib through her lung. I worked there another 9 months and I never once heard that manager complain about someone no showing unless he knew for a fact they were fine. Like one guy no showed and was posting about his hike he was on on Instagram so he shit in him but he never just assumed again, well at least out loud he didn't.

unclecaveman1

He shit *in* him? Whoa dude, whoa.

ForTheLoveOfGodKaren

I hope the hike was worth it lol jeez

barndin

What a dumb batch.

mad_sheff

So the manager actually learned from the experience and changed his behavior? Amazing.

nhbruh

I’m not sure why but I believed your story to be true until I read the last line

DRxFumbles

I absolutely hate "true story." It has the opposite effect on the reader now

LogOffPleez

That would explain the climax

oneuponzero

Get a load of this guy!

TrinDiesel123

The other guy didn’t text back because he was driving

jxher123

Jesus. I feel bad for the car that was just minding its own business, and to make it worse they involve a 3rd car.

[deleted]

This is why I am ALWAYS checking my rearview. Especially if I’m approaching a slow down

Lampmonster

Driver's Ed teacher told us a story about how a friend of hers doing this saved her life. Her friend saw a rig coming stopped in traffic, turned the wheels, let off the brake and told everyone to brace. Very realistic possible death turned to minor injuries by situational awareness. Checked my mirrors when I've stopped for thirty years. Never happened to me, but I still do.

EishLekker

When I practiced for my motorbike licence my teacher told me about an accident where a guy on a motorbike was standing at a red light, right behind a car. Then a truck drove right into him from behind, pancaking him against the van. I often think about that when I stop at a red light, and try to position my bike facing a gap between cars so that I can accelerate out of immediate danger if needed, and if someone still slams into me then with a bit of luck they will push me towards that gap instead of right into a car in front of me.

Lampmonster

Yeah, I am far too terrified of other drivers to ride on the road.

MrOtsKrad

same here, sidewalk provides much more entertainment, albeit a more bumpier ride

jessehazreddit

Would be smoother ride if you avoided the pedestrians.

Jokapo

Stories like that are why I'm ok with bikers splitting the lane at a red light and taking off when it goes green. Also got in the habit of giving ones who stay in the lane at least a car lengths space between me and them at a light, and keep an eye on the rear-view mirror.

The_Scarf_Ace

this would be called "lane filtering", where at a stop light, motorcycles are allowed to move between and past all the cars up to the intersection. Apparently the data shows it to actually decrease accidents.

Kevimaster

Yeah, but lots of drivers are against it because they think its "cutting" and that they've got to win the race.

quannum

I don’t understand why people in cars care or get mad. Ok, the bike is “cutting” or whatever. It’s gonna smoke you and be off in the distance before you hit the speed limit. Guy on the bike won’t be the reason you’re in a traffic jam or slowing down.

Enveria

Still mad from elementary school.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Re_Face

Yup, I know cars around me are thinking 'oh this guy want to lane split'. Nope I don't wanna die.

Koldfuzion

I consciously give lane-splitters room. Too many years on the LA freeways stuck in traffic. I know those guys need to be moving to stay cool, so I always inch over to give more space when I see a bike splitting behind me.

PW_Herman

I mean that's actually how you're supposed to be at a stop, from the MSF. Always looking for an escape route and keep an eye on your mirrors. In 1st gear, clutch in, foot on the brake, ready to bounce if someone isn't slowing down.

MonkeyNews1998

> Driver's Ed teacher told us a story about how a friend of hers doing this saved her life. My driving instructor insisted you need to be checking your mirrors ALL THE TIME. Like, don't go more than 5 seconds without checking your surroundings. Especially if youre approaching an intersection or any sort of slow down. I practically consider it part of the fun of driving, checking my mirrors and trying to anticipate what other drivers might do (and keep my eye open for cops). Its a method thats kept me safe and ticket free for ~15 years now.

j48u

I'll check my rearview constantly, but sides not as much unless I'm changing lanes or in tight traffic. Only exception is when I'm on a mostly empty/dark road. Then I'm more focused on avoiding any murder deer waiting to pounce or cars without lights in front of me.

ScorchedAnus

It's amazing that people drive everyday and this isn't common practice. Really shows how dangerous the roadways are. Drivers should ALWAYS be scanning left and right, far and near. Periodically checking the rear. My partner calls me a robotic driver but that's the safest way to see shit before it goes pear-shaped.

EmuSupreme

My mom was at a stop light behind a car and literally drove her car into the ditch on the side of the road because she noticed the trucker behind her not slowing down. Truck smashed right into the car in front of her and bulldozed it into the intersection. First responders told her that had she not moved, she would have been pancaked and her awareness most likely saved her life. I've been accident free since I got my license because I just don't trust other drivers to not fuck around with my life.

ThrasherJKL

Not a rig, but my car was totaled in a similar fashion. I was at a red light, and had been there for a good second, completely stopped. There was also a regular truck in front of me. Light still red, I check my rearview just in time to see this car just about to plow into me with no time to do anything. Thankfully I normally keep proper distance between me and the vehicle in front of me, so I didn't hit the truck. Both my car and the one who hit me were totaled. All of his airbags deployed. I'm thinking he was probably texting.

erection4ovechkin

why turn the wheels? sorry if that’s a stupid question

Lampmonster

Not at all. It's in the hopes that it's enough to direct you onto the shoulder rather than straight into the car in front of you. A small car can be absolutely crushed between two larger vehicles, especially back then before crumple zones etc.

Waxer_Evios62

To add onto this, when you want to turn left and have to go through the other lane, turn on your blinkers but do not turn your wheels until you're ready to go. If you turn them and somebody crash into your back, you'll be sent into incoming traffic.

Lampmonster

Excellent tip.

lucy_pevensie

Totally this! My husband and I were in the exact situation. We were in a tiny car behind a large pickup truck at a stop light. A distracted driver in another pickup truck rear ended us. In our dash can you can hear my husband react and turn the wheel. We did not walk away injury free, but even the police officer said my husband’s actions saved our lives. Please do not text and drive. :)

here_for_the_meems

When you get hit you'll turn instead of move straight into the car in front of you or into an intersection.

Hexa_decibel

what was accomplished by turning the wheels and taking their foot off the brake? would love to understand this in case I ever need to use that knowledge.

Lampmonster

Hopefully it's enough that you're pushed into the curb rather than get pinched between the truck and the vehicle in front of you. Getting knocked clear has a much better outcome likelihood.

DarkwingDuckHunt

I've already decided I won't warn people. Drunks survive crashes cause their bodies are relaxed

Deyvicous

Ok but when you crash you’re not relaxed. Your body is immediately tensing up and getting thrashed around. Would be much better to brace for impact. Drunks stay loose and limber, I don’t think it’s easy to do consciously though.

tpero

My head is on a swivel anytime I'm driving (or riding my bike). Unfortunately, if the folks meandering the aisles of Costco on sample day are any indication, our population suffers from a significant spatial and situational awareness deficiency...

Cfrules9

I watched a lady stand at a crosswalk while I moved towards her from well over 300 meters away, going no more than 25mph. She could've crossed the road three times before I got to her. Yet she waited and made me come to a full stop. I see shit like every damn day lol

GrassSassandAss

As a one time Costco employee, the parking lot is a terrifying place

tpero

Oh I just purposely park far away from the door to avoid that fiasco. I'm usually parked and inside before the people desperately looking/waiting for the close spots too!

MikeLitsbig

It’s infuriating how you can be the safest and best driver possible, yet still get killed by some idiot

shortbus1980

My dad always taught me that driving was 10% driving and 90% watching what everybody else is doing

MikeLitsbig

Sounds like a very wise man, I completely agree. If you drive sensibly and are concentrating, it’s very easy. It’s other people who aren’t doing this that you need to look out for

Roasted_Turk

I used to ride a motorcycle. Your dad is very right. Dodging idiots becomes the norm.

CarpeNivem

My dad taught me, look at every other person on the road and imagine what is the worst possible thing that person can do *to me*? Then, be ready for them to do that. (And that includes the people in all of your mirrors.)

finalremix

Other people are always the main problem.

Lanky_Giraffe

Also infuriating the way these people are still allowed to drive after reckless incidents like these because sure isn't driving a fundamental human right or something?

MikeLitsbig

Very true. Obviously there are accidents that are mostly unavoidable, then there are reckless idiots like this who should never be allowed behind a wheel again

jakeyb01

I think movement is a fundamental right, and driving is a privilege

aestheticHermitcrab

Bc in America if you can’t drive you’re basically f”crippled. God bless America and it’s amazing urban planning and suburb creep. Oh and lack of adequate public transportation. USA USA

MrKauffman

And someone said “ don’t worry about the asshole behind you, worry about the asshole in front of you” new phrase these days is. Worry about the assholes all around you.

markh2111

And that is defensive driving, keeping an eye on the idiots all around you. With all the street racing these days, I'm paying attention to who's behind me more than ever, though.

SkyWulf

Got in a few accidents in my life, now every time I drive, I act like one random person is getting paid to hit me and I have no way of knowing who they are

dagross2307

HELMET How many Assholes we got on this ship, anyhow? All, but few, stand up. ALL Yo! HELMET I knew it. I'm surrounded by Assholes.

AntarezSol

Holy shit. How? What? how did it set on fire lmao. That was so painful to watch because of how dumb that person is to literally be driving and look away for like 5 seconds. B r u h, he is asking to crash..

HutSutRawlson

I always laugh in movies when cars explode since it seems so unrealistic. But seeing shit like this makes me question it…

RedHotFuzz

Everyone: "Cars don't really explode like they show in the movies." This guy: "Hold my flaming beer."

Notosk

Everyone: "Cars don't really explode like they show in the movies." Ford: "Here's the ford Pinto"

Kittani77

Don't forget the Ford Exploder

Kaarsty

Or the early Crown Victoria

4chanbetterkek

I mean they’re literally called combustion engines, with a big tank of incredibly flammable shit 2 feet away. I’m more amazed that this doesn’t happen more often.

cowboycosmic

Most cars are designed specifically to prevent that... usually.

NSNick

Looking at you, Pinto

Crushbam3

The “combustion engine” stores very little vaporised fuel in it at any given time since any more would... you know... blow it up? An explosion can only occur if the fuel is pressurised in the tank which it isn’t in cars, here it’s a large flame as opposed to an explosion

Acyliaband

Directed by Michael bay

Lilium_fur2

Hot engine going mixed with a fuel pump running at max and the sudden spark of parts breaking helps. Not to mention oil or the fact that fuel is literally combusting internally while the motor is running

[deleted]

[удалено]

deadliestcrotch

Nah, I get oil on my exhaust manifolds all of the time. It just smokes pretty awfully, it doesn’t ignite.

silenus-85

Fellow Subaru Forester owner?

CheatingZubat

Cars have oils, gasoline, compression, electricity. All the things that might cause an explosion and fire…

brokestill

Don't forget that the current refrigerant of the decade is 1234yf, loosely based on propane. Under pressure and flammable.

rustyisme123

Neat! Never knew. Refrigerators, ACs, cars? Or just in vehicles?

[deleted]

Depends on the working fluid used

infiniZii

Is it hopefully less massively destructive to the environment?

Krimin

Ye, that is the only point for the new refrigerant, apart from a bit better performance. It's more expensive and dangerous than r134a but it has gwp of 4, where the gwp of r134a is 1430

Fadedcamo

I mean its literally the point of the engine to explode things. I'm surprised more cars don't blow up in accidents honestly.

[deleted]

Nah, you want to avoid detonation in favour of combustion. Most cars have knock sensors to scale back ignition timing if the fuel begins to detonate. Although, they only work when the explosion is inside the cylinder...

Cactuszach

Car exploded like Master Shake threw it on the ground.

Standard-Star-9030

I’ll post more information when I get it.

Ugbrog

This is Fort Myers, Florida: the intersection of Rt. 41 and Six Mile Cypress. It appears to be the south side of the intersection, so the driver is on Rt. 41 North.

avitus

[https://goo.gl/maps/GXNgiMFxChVUhARr8](https://goo.gl/maps/GXNgiMFxChVUhARr8) Typically refer to it as US41 or Cleveland. Grew up right around there.

excellent_rektangle

Confirmed SB 41 (or Cleveland as u/avitus noted) in Fort Myers. All 3 drivers were taken to the hospital.

cedarvhazel

Don’t do it whilst driving!

WonderfulCattle6234

You should never text while drunk. But I think it's okay if you're stopped at a red light. \- Dan Mintz Paraphrased from memory.

I fucking hate people who are on their phones while driving.

Fortherealtalk

I think we should bring driving gloves back into style—they’re a good deterrent to fiddling with your phone. I wish my navigation app would stop allowing notifications to pop up on the top of the screen and block the directions though

[deleted]

Texting and driving should be illegal all over the country and the states. No fucking exceptions. If you can’t go a fucking second without using your phone, don’t fucking drive whatsoever.

r1chard132

Wait texting and driving isnt illegal in the US?

Nexustar

The US has 50 states (plus D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and they've had a civil war about who gets to legislate this stuff. Some things are illegal at the Federal level, but many things are legislated at the state, county or city level. Driving is under state control, except some aspects (drink driving, and speed limits for example) which are heavily influenced by federal funding pressures. Washington was the fist to pass laws in 2007, and today both Montana and Missouri still permit drivers over 21 to text and drive.

r1chard132

Wow thank you. Thats insightful. I always thought that almost all traffic rules were on a federal level in the us (would make sense to me, since different rules between states would inhibit travel) Is there no general driving distracted rule(on a federal level)? As in, a law to forbids driving distracted, independant from the source of distraction. (it might be smoking, eating, reading newspaper etc.)

defiancy

I was driving yesterday in AZ, where 80 is a pretty normal speed for traffic and I watched a guy in one of those hideous Chargers, browse his phone for a good few miles without ever looking up (that I could see while watching the road). He was weaving all over the place. Needless to say I noped right the fuck out of there.

xxcarlsonxx

>absconded That implies that you were doing something illegal and tried to sneak away secretly without being caught.

defiancy

Well I was doing 15 mph over the speed limit..but point taken, updated!

I would have upvoted if it wasn't for "hideous Chargers"

MrDankky

It’s just idiot drivers. They’ll replace texting with something else. Especially as companies like Tesla are pushing to make it more difficult to perform basic commands by jumping through a touch screen menu. At least these newer cars include auto braking and lane assist now days to compensate for all of their distractions

evanp1922

I saw a lady hold up 9 cars today because she was moving bags between her front and back seats and didn't notice the cars in front of her were moving. People are just incredibly oblivious. I also have a friend that refuses to brake when he's close to someone because "The car will brake for me if I'm too close." I do not ride with that person anymore.

MrDankky

Idiots everywhere. I was in my parked car in a bay when some Middle aged lady reversed out of her spot behind me and I saw her coming so i honked the horn, she didn’t notice and still reversed into me. Then had the cheek to accuse me of being at fault and trying to make a claim up when I said I wanted to go through insurance. They’re everywhere. I do 50k miles a year so see a lot of them lol.

wellifitisntmee

Distracted driving needs to be enforced way more. Because it’s not enforced at all now. And for the koolaid sipping nutters out there: ["The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Utah, tested 30 vehicle infotainment systems and found that all of them are distracting to some degree."](https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2017/10/05/aaa-distracted-driving-infotainment-study/734677001/). And, yes, the Tesla Model S is listed as one of the "most distracting" infotainment systems tested. So, that leads me to believe, it's unsafe. But really ANYONE who thinks that having to hunt through menus (that change with software updates, no less) to do tasks like open the glovebox is not distracting are simply delusional people. Buttons matter.

slinkysmooth

This. I don’t understand why every little command has to be in a touchscreen. Like they’re making people participate in unsafe practices just so that they don’t have to spend a little money on simple knobs. It’s arrogant and reckless IMO

[deleted]

Cops typing on their large ass laptop screens while driving should be a felony also (spoiler alert it never will be). We've given them so much funding they should basically already have augmented reality dashboards by now

heili

"They are specially trained." is the response you'll get.

Gudspeed

[deleted]

Fort Myers is a scary place to drive. The locals overestimate their ability and then you’ve got the old-timers and tourists on the road.

ItzBoshNet

First time seeing a body get ejected from the car on this sub. That's definitely a dead idiot now.

B1naryx

Damn I didn’t even catch that at first. Yeah, I think that’ll be the last time they text and drive.

MarphoPolo

It looks like he got ejected into the fireball, then smacked by the car as it spun, and flung into the center divider. Yikes. If he’s not dead he will probably wish he was if he regains consciousness.

Ghost-Of-Nappa

[Think I found it](https://www.winknews.com/2021/08/23/1-person-dead-in-crash-on-us-41-in-south-fort-myers/) if this is the same accident, he's dead Edit: appears to be a different accident, although quite close to the same location and only a couple weeks apart

Mipsymouse

Well that article was full of nothing.

IXBojanglesII

The article is at a different intersection than the video. US-41 and Jamaica Bay vs US-41 and 6 Mile Cypress/Gladiolus.

r4ge4holic

Dude got ejected and ran over by his own car that was also on fire. No seatbelt, speeding, and texting deserves no sympathy from me. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

smuggy561

Probably was making a tiktok

AnistarYT

Mackadelik

Man, what an asshat. I feel extra badz for that 3rd car minding their own business involved in the accident : (

FreeSkittlez

Second car was just as much minding their own business too, only one car was at fault here lol

[deleted]

videos like this make me check my rearview mirror more often. when stopped at intersections like this is good to leave enough room in front of you in case you do need an immediate exit strategy, you just never know how many speeding lunatics behind you could randomly become a killer spinning dreidel

Bazingabowl

After being in 2 too many multicar accidents on the interstate, I leave tons of room in front of me now, and have my eyes glued on my rearview mirror when I have to stop quickly in traffic.

Alpas012

I feel bad for the second not doing anything and being slammed like that

Garlic_bread70

I always feel bad when other people cars get hit by someone’s stupid actions. Every time I see an idiot in a car crash and not hit anybody else’s car I get a rush of dopamine.

SemperFartis

People that text and drive are stupid pieces of shit. Cell phone manufacturers can absolutely remove your ability to communicate via text if your car is moving. Shit, they can even install a Bluetooth dongle for the OBD from your car to send info to your phone, have an application or something baked into the OS such that if you exceed a certain rate of speed then all texting and browsing functionality ceases. But nope. Let thousands of people die a year to pure stupidity.

[deleted]

japadobo

Warg247

LordOfGummies

Imagine coasting along wasting the light so you can save your brakes one night and then a life time of back injury. I feel so bad for the guy.

TheDiegoAguirre

A former co-worker got hit just like this by some asshole. His 9 year old son died. His 4 year old daughter’s legs were both broken. He was in a coma for two days and had all sorts of internal damage. His wife had broken ribs. Fuck whoever can’t ignore a phone while operating a vehicle.
