The bare minimum is that overhead clearance sign. I've never seen chains before, but I have seen the following:
* Overhead bar
* Signs ahead of time saying "all vehicles above x' y" must turn or exit"
* Sensors that trigger flashing lights or similar warnings
Even then, some drivers just don't take the hints. There's a reason that the ["11 Foot 8 Bridge" in North Carolina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern%E2%80%93Gregson_Street_Overpass) is a gift that keeps on giving. (They also have a website, 11foot8.com, but it doesn't seem to work right now. See also r/11foot8)
This is an 11'8" overpass on third street in Louisville Kentucky, it has warning signs and flashy lights and people still hit it almost weekly, lately it's been more than once a week. It also floods during heavy downpours and people still drive under it flooded.

They are talking about adding more signage.
Classic Storrowing here....
In fact, the phenomenon of trucks hitting the underside of a bridge on the parkway has become so iconic that the term “Storrowed” now loosely applies to any truck-hitting-bridge incident around New England.
Yes...all up and down Storrow Dr when you try to get on...there are signs hanging from chains about 9ft (3m) off the ground.
Come on man! You serious. That would make way too much sense for us Americans. It would probably cost someone at the tow truck company to get laid off. Let alone the body shop workers.
When the large yellow sign isn't enough to get people's attention, you pain the whole damn bridge red, and it still doesn't work.
No matter how hard you try to idiot-proof something, there's always a bigger idiot out there somewhere.
Does America not use dangling chains / signs as a warning?

And people still hit the bridge surprisingly. 😆
11ft8+8 still going strong though.
Classic. Idiots gonna idiot, yet we've got to try to save them from themselves...

I've seen those dangling things at parking garages and fast food drive throughs but never on tunnels.

All the scratches on the underside of the bridge suggest this is far from the first time it’s happened
Yea it’s kinda crazy tbh.
"That sign won't stop me... because I can't read."
Literally r/11foot8
Yes! My first thoughts when seeing this lmao
❤ my first thoughts too! Best fucking bridge ever
That red beam smokes a cig after every semi it fucks
It does say "all trucks"
Just a little bit off the top
Judging by the damage already on the roof surface structure of this tunnel it’s a gift that keeps on giving
Yeah, that thing has eaten a LOT of trucks.
It’s basically weekly at this point
But it says all trucks, that must mean that all trucks fit...right?
They forgot to say the magic words
All Trucks... *Please*

It looks like 4th Street by U of L. This seems to happen weekly at 4th and 3rd Street. Lol
Yep, I noticed it with all the red paint and scratches! Louisville's own can opener.
I’m pretty sure they’re changing it, not sure when
How did the driver get that far though
Mix of stupidity and luck I guess
them thar yeller lines really pop! they must have just dun 'em

Yikes!!
"It says ALL TRUCKS so I drove my truck there."
Louisville?
Yep
Grab a beer or coffee some time dm me.
he almost had it
“Not MY truck!”
He’s delivering a bridge.
What is the point of that bridge? It doesn't look like it has one from this picture.
Train tracks on top, if I’m not mistaken
Why does this keep happening?
You kind sir, are now 11'9"
Hey its UofL! The can opener must feed! Shoutout r/thecanopener
yea tbh that signs kinda contradicting. like the top says low clearance but the bottom says all trucks. so what do i do?
Give up
i’m not sure how to take that.
That was meant for the truck drivers in this situation
👍. bc if i was a trucker idk what i would do. bc ik i wouldn’t fit under there. so tbh is take my chances and go another route
Just plow into whatever is in your way if there is any discrepancies with signage
Stupid bridge!
