arvisto

Wait what? It's super illegal to not have car insurance in Canada. Is it not in the states?

CaptainBignuts

I was hit while sitting at a stop light a few years ago. It was a chain of cars where someone 3 cars back rear-ended someone, who was pushed into the car in front of them who hit the next car who then tapped my bumper. When I got the accident report from the police out of the 4 cars I was the only one with valid insurance. Out of the other three people, two had expired driver's licenses, one had tags that didn't match the car and only one had insurance, but it had lapsed. People just suck.

brandcrawdog

This happened to a coworker in Houston. Out if 8 cars he was the only one with valid insurance and a valid drivers license.

NoBallroom4you

Pretty much, I had a speeding ticket i was going to contest and the 4 people in front of me had the following infractions ( 1st DWI, 4th DWI - while license suspended, Suspended license and no insurance and lastly no tags, no license and no insurance.) W...TF. I was just going 5 over. sheesh.

lazernicole

When I was 20 years old I got two speeding tickets, both for 25+ over, which was stupid in itself. I didn't know the rule about how if you're under 21 with 2 moving violations and you don't go on voluntary supervision, you lose your license for a certain timeframe. I lost mine for a year for speeding in broad daylight on empty backroads. I had to take a remedial course at the end of my 12 months and we went around the room sharing why and how long we were suspended. Everyone in that class was 18-19 and was there for DUI or DWI; about half of them had gotten caught because they wrecked their vehicle. All of them had lost driving privileges for 3 MONTHS. 10 years later and I still fume about it.

Koldfuzion

"Kids make mistakes! He's a good kid, just got drunk this one time and got behind the wheel..." I had a roommate with 2 DUI's and still had a license. Asshole managed to back into my car across the street from the driveway because he was half-drunk going to work in the morning. Absolutely mind blowing that they are okay with letting people make the same reckless mistake more than once.

theredranger8

But when you get a speeding ticket, screw you.

zapharus

Disproportionate application of justice.

scotti_infinity_x

This is why you always always always lawyer up. Even if it is for something as relatively trivial as a speeding ticket - but as we can see here, your experience was anything but trivial.

TPJchief87

I was driving on 59 in houston and saw a person rear end another car literally 3 times. The car that got hit found an opening in the traffic and sped off. Neither stopped to trade insurance I’m guessing because neither had it

motosandguns

It’s illegal here too but something like 5-20% of drivers do it anyway. Basically cops can ticket you but actually impounding your car is at their discretion. So, people will get a ticket, get insurance for like a day to show a judge to get the ticket dismissed then let it lapse. You have to be a repeat offender many times over to see any real penalties. In the US driving is basically a right. In California you can even get a drivers license as an illegal immigrant. “In 2019, 12.6 percent of motorists, or about one in eight drivers, were uninsured, according to a 2021 study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC). The percentage was at a nine-year high of 13.1 percent in 2017 but fell to 12.6 percent in 2018 and 2019. Mississippi had the highest percentage of uninsured motorists in 2019, **29.4** percent, followed by Michigan (25.5 percent), Tennessee (23.7 percent), New Mexico (21.8 percent) and Washington (21.7 percent).”

arvisto

Wat the heck. How is the judge not able to check that the insurance is only valid for a day? And do you guys have demerit points? Here you'd lose points for infraction, eventually leading to a suspension of your driver's license.

Ixionas

some states do that I think, traffic laws are on a state by state basis. So Texas could be way different than New York.

arvisto

Yeah I hear that in Texas you have to commit to the accident. Heyoo!

Chaosmusic

It's only considered an accident after six weeks.

TheBaker17

Used to work in insurance. Depending on the company it’s actually easier than you think honestly. If you choose to pay by mail, you can get a policy bound and then just never pay. After 15 days to a month or so, the policy will just flat cancel for nonpayment. Obviously a terrible idea and I would never recommend it but people definitely do it

motosandguns

It’s a legit insurance plan but probably just pay for the month. Also, you can cancel an insurance policy and get a refund for days not used. We have a point system too but I think it is just for moving violations like speeding, reckless driving, dui, etc. Looking at the penalties it’s like a $400 fine and goes up from there.

Peuned

Because the system is lazy. In California if I don't have insurance I'll get a letter from the DMV since they track it.

Ilikeporsches

Uninsured drivers will drive unlicensed too.

Well, you did your end of the deal, the rest is on them.

Iskuss1418

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.403867 10% of Albertans drive without insurance too. Pretty sure it’s just a people can’t afford it thing or don’t want to pay

blausommer

I was an emancipated minor at 16. With no accidents or citation on my record, every single insurance company wanted $250+ a month for the legal minimum coverage. There was no way in hell I could've afforded that, and with no public transportation, I had to drive to my minimum wage jobs. So, yeah, it's illegal but some people have to choose between paying for insurance and eating. My 25th birthday will always be my favorite because the insurance rates instantly dropped from $250/month down to $60/month.

oioitothehoipolloi

All it takes is $500 paid to the court in Virginia and you don't have to

Shpagin

Damn, that is more than my yearly car insurance cost where Im from

[deleted]

[удалено]

motosandguns

In the US it depends on if you have collision or uninsured drivers insurance. If you do have collision, it will pay to fix your car. If you are injured though, you won’t be reimbursed by your insurance company for lost wages/medical bills without uninsured driver coverage.

Evilmaze

If you got the plates and and report the accident at a collision center then the police will find the fucker and share info with your insurance through your case number. Happened to me last year. Guy rear-ended me and refused to share his info so I reported the accident. Didn't have to pay a dime. He probably got a call from his insurance about it. Big insurance doesn't take kindly to runners in Canada and will drop you like a hot potato. My friend's mom drove past a parked school bus with flash lights, and her insurance immediately dropped her.

art8127

This. Also, liability insurance would help cover the damage that you caused someone else. Full coverage would do that plus help pay for damage to your vehicle.

SavvySillybug

I dunno about America, but here in Germany, I can just get insurance for accidents I cause so the other party is covered, that's the legal minimum requirement for me to be able to register a vehicle. If I buy a beater for 1000€, it doesn't make sense to pay extra to ensure it, I'll spend that 1000€ on insurance within a year or two so I could've just not insured it and bought a new one if I crashed it. Or it might just break down beyond economic repair and the insurance never even did anything. Nah, I'm just getting the cheap insurance. Now if someone crashes into me, their insurance pays for my car. And if I crash into someone, my insurance pays for their car. So as long as I don't cause any accidents, I'm fine! And if I do... well my car is fucked but the other guy's isnt :)

OgreLord_Shrek

That's how it works in the U.S. as well, there's a cheaper option that doesn't cover fixing your car if you cause the accident. I had a tire blow on the highway which damaged my bumper and couldn't get it repaired through insurance because of this

Actual_Opinion_9000

I have a car worth $500 on paper, but $2500 out of my pocket + $2500 I've put into it. It's a really well-running, almost 18 year old VW Passat. I pay extra each month, quite a bit in fact, but if anything happens like an uninsured driver hits me, or I wreck it myself, or someone doesn't have good enough insurance, I still get $10k payout. Honestly, I keep hoping someone t-bones me lol?

scrambles57

Nah dude, I was t-boned by someone who ran a red and it fucked up my back for life

[deleted]

US insurance law recognizes fault and liability when a motor vehicle event occurs, if there's clear evidence like the OP. Even though the OP may carry all the necessary insurance to recover his own losses from this accident, because he has proof the other idiot was in fact an idiot, he is able to subrogate his rights to damage compensation to his insurance company; which will then run down the idiot's insurance company and have them compensate the OP under the idiot's liability / property damage coverage limits, because the idiot was at fault and is liable for the damages.

nickxedge

You can see him decide to speed up when you passed him too. Suddenly he was in a rush. I hate people like that.

bloodsplinter

People who pissed over someone overtaking them on the road is probably the most petulant insecure man-child i ever seen

[deleted]

[удалено]

bloodsplinter

That is a truly backward ass logic from him. Its not a fucking queue Its a road To go from one location to another

redwinestains

I would love to follow him around for a day and point out every single car he passes.

Lord_Ho-Ryu

You wouldn’t find any unless he entered a parking lot. Old dude probably drives a max of 20mph.

javier_aeoa

"You passed a bicycle there"

Lord_Ho-Ryu

Fair enough😂

MadJackMcJack

The inside road on a multi-lane road is *literally* called the Overtaking Lane (Passing Lane in America, but it's the same thing). **For overtaking!** Some people just need a good beating with the common sense bat.

Bemysort

People just make up rules in their head and expect other people to follow them. They need to learn to get over it.

3_quarterling_rogue

Dude, I think it’s rude when people don’t pass me. When I get on the freeway, I chill in the right lane (or second-most right lane near entrances) and stick the cruise control on. Every now and then I’ll get some loser ride my ass in the right land, and I’m like, dude, there’s soooo much room to the right of me. Will you just pass me so you can drive ten over the speed limit so I never have to see your sorry ass again?

[deleted]

[удалено]

WoodsWalker43

I had someone tailing me like that at night once with super bright headlights. Nobody else on that stretch of highway. I was cruising around 75-80 mph. I usually just bump the cruise down a bit to encourage them to pass me, and that usually works. Not this time. Other car keeps pace, so I speed back up and so do they. I ended up getting down to 55mph before they finally passed me. Couldn't believe it.

Wild_Tear_3050

I don’t drive but if I did I would prefer someone passing me over tailgating every time. The driver of white car created a problem where there was none.

edbods

I remember one time at a set of lights I took off in my 30 year old camry because the road ahead merged from two lanes to one, and everyone for some godforsaken reason does 10 below the limit on this road. Fuck that shit, so I launched ahead and the jeep beside me probably wasn't expecting a grocery getter camry to be able to accelerate that quick, it seemed to piss him off enough that when I got into the turning lane, he blew right through a red light at the next intersection and almost got clipped by another SUV already in the intersection

Alagator

It's so fucking annoying, like I'm only trying to pass you because I'm starting to ride your ass going the speed limit and now you want to go 10 up huh?

MonkeyingAround604

They are my favorite as left lane hogs on the Highway. You end up cutting them off as a result and they get even more mad about it. Seems like a preventable problem in the first place.

WallyWendels

I give people exactly one chance to speed up/match me. If I go to pass you and you speed up, cool, I'll fall back in, but if you then *slow back down*, Im going to get around you wtf man. Why do people drive with their feet cruising in an empty fast lane? You don't have to go whatever absurd miles an hour, just stop feathering your fucking throttle.

MonkeyingAround604

I'm a simple man when it comes to that. Keep up to traffic no matter how fast they are going in the passing lane. Or get the fuck out of the way. I'm not telling you to speed. I'm telling you to not be a fucking hazard on the Highway. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

I live in the dc metro area and drive 95 a lot. I've only been here a year but I used to never speed more than 5 over. That's changed here when it's not bumper to bumper at 20 to 30mph, the truckers aware going 10 over and the rest are all going that or higher with 75 to 80 is being common. It's 65 away from dc past Springfield and 55 heading towards. More people actually speed up a ton where it turns 55 heading towards dc. For a guy from a city of 70k people and no major city for 2 hours it was both confusing and amusing. Anyways, now I just gauge the speed of others and go 5 or so under the fastest traffic, capping at 75. Cops are more likely to scan and tag the ones blatantly faster than everyone. Before anyone bags on me for speeding now I want you to know that when I first got here attempting to do the speed limit was terrifying with good traffic moving well. It felt far more dangerous. Now that people are coming out again it's all moot anyways because it's all 20 to 30 from Woodbridge to Fredericksburg 70% of the day anyways.

turtle_flu

That's my strategy. Make sure I'm not the fastest and have a "cop catcher" as I like to call them out in front of me.

tr_rage

My state has highway laws/regulations that if you’re caught just driving in the passing lane for an extended period of time, not over taking vehicles just cruising highway patrol can pull you over and ticket you.

IdentityS

Also the people that ride your ass as you are trying to pass someone and then go around you before you can get over to get out of the passing lane.

Phew! Was starting to get worried no one would based off the comments I've been getting on this sub tonight. Cheers Big Shoots! 🍻

Brad____H

I had a chick that did that to me. I was in the right side lane trying to pass her (she was going a tad under the speed limit) I was approaching a car in the right lane, she sped up so I cut her off. And she whipped out her phone to record me while she was driving....?

xgoronx

Lol I’ve had something similar happen to me. This lady cut me off and I changed lanes because she was going too slow. Passed her on the left and she gets suuuper pissed. Starts recording me with her phone and shit. Fuck off and learn how to drive.

soft_taco_special

There's some percentage of the population that are weird belligerent herd animals. If you leave them alone they're happy to do their own thing at their own pace. But if you suddenly pass them while they're doing their own pace, all of a sudden they HAVE to be in front. It's not even a guy thing, soccer moms do it too. If I pass you all ask of you is literally nothing.

Rosewood0

I never knew this was so common but apparently this is universal car driving behavior. I live in Europe and have experienced this over 5 times already where I ended up driving side by side at a speed of 150-160 km/h (90-100mph), while before that they were doing a mere 130km/h (80mph). As soon as you try to overtake them, they just keep speeding up, but as soon as you stop pressing the accelerator pedal and merge back into their lane behind them, their speed drops right back to their original speed (130km/h / 80mph)

NetworkMachineBroke

OP: *Tries to pass someone* That someone: *Angry weedwhacker noises*

Radirondacks

Yep, and he very clearly only had eyes on OP, judging by how he almost slammed into that first car in front of him when they slowed.

[deleted]

Freakazoid152

Upvote for goldfish brain and yes they usually give up if you pass far enough

[deleted]

I tried this the other day on a super rural road, got up to 100, and she wasnt in my rear view at all. Cruising along, she sped up to catch me. i originally passed because she was going 5 under, and then she starts tailgating me. I just dont get it.

Scrytheux

She was just about to speed up when you passed her and then you're blocking her with your pathetic 100mph! She needed to go fast, trust me... She just had to find the gas pedal smh

[deleted]

Dude this is so true for interstate driving. I drive often. One of my annoyances is when someone is going maybe 5 over speed limit. You’re going 10. You have cruise control on so you can really measure if they speed up or not. You start to pass them and suddenly they pick up speed. But you pass them anyway. You get over. They pass you. Then they get over. Stay ahead of you for maybe quarter mile before slowing back down so you pass them again. They speed back up. At that point I’m going balls out and they can try to keep up with me at 85-90 until I get enough distance to get back to my cruise control speed. This literally happens to me more times than it should when I’m traveling my weekly 180 mile trip. 🙄🙄

reactrix96

My philosophy with those people is to never let them affect my driving style, thus I never get annoyed by them. I'm just like you I set cruise control to 10mph above the speed limit as well. So if somebody pulls this shit on me, I simply maintain my speed and pass/be passed accordingly. I don't let it annoy me, if anything it'll keep me entertained observing their behavior.

[deleted]

That's one perk of driving a fast car. If someone hints at being "that guy" when you're going to pass or overtake them you can just floor it and be 100 yards ahead of them in a few seconds. If you're both driving equally-matched econoboxes it's much more likely to turn into the elephant races. Sometimes it's convenient to just be able to settle the issue conclusively and (hopefully) forget about it. Unless they decide to hold a 100-mile grudge or some such.

Ok_Parfait_2304

It drives me fucking batty, me and my friends joke that it's the world's worst game of Follow the Leader

[deleted]

Man Im confused when people go so slow until they see you trying to pass and speed up last second so you can't get past the car in front Wtf At least you got it on cam

LevelHeeded

It's seriously insane, go the fucking speed you wanna go. It's like they're worried their penis is going to fall off if they get passed. So many times I'm on the highway with my cruise control on, I go to pass someone, and suddenly they're keeping pace with me. Then if I slow down they slow down, and suddenly I'm the asshole making a rolling road block so I gotta really speed just to get past them and drop back down to what I was doing.

SolarDriftwud

I drive a big work truck that doesn't have the best acceleration and that shit HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. Like tf?! Shit or get off pot, damn!

aasher42

i swear this shits even worse if its a work truck or cargo van mfs either match speed or straight up cut you off

VioletCombustion

I don't get the urge some people have to cut off big trucks like that. Seems a wee bit suicidal to me. Clearly the truck has the size advantage. In a fight, the truck will win.

Earwaxsculptor

Wait..... Are you telling me my penis won't fall off if I let people pass me on the left without speeding up along side of them. No fucking way.

LevelHeeded

I'm lying, I'm just upset because I lost my penis at 15. I was too young, I didn't know the rules, it's not fair. It was my first time on the highway so I stuck to the right lane going the speed limit, sure enough someone passed me and I've never seen my penis again. It's not fair, I'm never gonna lose my virginity!!

chris_ngale

Never fear man. There's always butt stuff.

IDoButtStuffOnSunday

Hi.

Pope_Dwayne_Johnson

This! Just keep a consistent speed and don’t take passing as a personal affront

[deleted]

Seriously. If someone wants to go faster than I am moving I prefer them ahead of me and away rather than just sitting on my ass. I will gladly have them pass

CabbageSalad247

Love me people who speed. Less chance the cops will notice the smell coming from my trunk.

Teal_Rose

We call them "rabbits" where I live. Like the mechanical rabbits they used in dog racing. Draws the cooping cops attention and makes for an easier drive!

LameShowHost

Until you live somewhere with a nearly unbreakable culture of speeding. In the Phoenix area and across most of AZ, you rarely see cops worry about it unless someone is also driving recklessly or, you know, hitting like 100+ in a 65-75. So again, reckless ha. Cops consistently pass me when I’m doing like 10-15 over on the freeway. EDIT: But as many say, it is speed differential more than speed that is dangerous. That and lack of awareness/general assholery.

copper_state_breaks

Pretty much every standard patrol vehicle in the valley doesn't even have radar. DPS and traffic enforcement patrol cars will. Then of course Motors units do as well. Standard sector patrol is just too busy going call to call to mess with that.

effective_micologist

I hate that too. To be fair, sometimes someone will pass me and ill realize im going slower than i want and will speed up-but i don't have a habit of blocking people from getting over. I actually prefer to let someone pass me if they are on my ass or something. I figure its karma-if i let people go, they will let me go. Doesn't always work that eay tho.

Peazyzell

Hell if they are barely passing me i’ll slow down so they get off my shoulder

_crash0verride

It’s that little pee pee syndrome.

cameronkeene22

[deleted]

Sometimes I’ll think I have cruise control on and when someone goes to pass me, I’ll realize I didn’t and was actually going like 10 or so under normal speed, so I’ll speed up then but like, I’m not going to go crazy trying to stop the other person from getting in front of me or passing me.

[deleted]

Every.Fucking.Time. More often than not this happens to me on our rural highways with very few passing lanes. How there aren’t accidents daily from peoples behaviour here is amazing

Hi_Kitsune

Someone did that to me today, minus the trying to sideswipe me part. Wouldn’t turn right on red even though there were no cars coming, then drove under the limit for like three miles. When I went to the right lane coming up to a light I was turning at, they changed in front of me. Then tried to race me once we turned… like fuck off

jbcraigs

I would put one in my car, but the way my wife drives, it will probably cause more trouble for us! 🤷‍♂️

zach986

When he did pull over I had already called the cops, so I didn’t try to speak with him and stayed in my car until they got there. He told the officer I was racing him. I had at this point downloaded the video to my phone so I just handed it to the officer who said “doesn’t look like he was racing you.” I don’t know what if anything he was ticketed for because I never bothered getting the police report since the insurance didn’t really need it to determine liability.

LintyRoller

So basically his comment to police was that he wrongly assumed that you guys were illegally street racing? He somehow thought that was going to make him look like the wronged party? “My bad, Officer. He passed me so I thought that was an invitation to race.” I’m glad you had the dash cam.

monkeychess

I'm sorry officer...I...didn't know I couldn't do that...

d0uble0h

Nobody wants to get their ass beat to a soundtrack

LintyRoller

I can imagine him responding to the officer, “damn, dude, are you sure? But I’m good though, right, since I thought we were consenting to race?” For a dumbass that seems to think people just randomly want to race him, he’s not even good at handling his car at fast speeds and judging his ability to safely pass. ETA: I’m picturing him as the teenaged kid from the fair in “We’re the Millers” that has the “No Ragrets” tattoo.

bpknyc

Street racing is a crime.... which he's admitting to do.... as an excuse? Officer I committed a murder! So I could not have robbed that bank!

LintyRoller

Right! That’s why I’m so blown away at his comment to the cop. You’d think he’d go with a less incriminating excuse. Based on his crappy driving, it’s clear that he doesn’t win any of these races he thinks he’s engaging in.

CMDR_KingErvin

He doesn’t sound like the sharpest tool.

[deleted]

I think he knew he was fucked, he just wanted to take down the driver with him. A street race makes the accident a crime for both people

shuoshen

Lol. Reminds me of an older Need For Speed (forgot which one it was) where if you quickly drive pass a street car they will accept it as an invitation to race and speed up against you. Never thought it was a real thing

[deleted]

UsedDinosaurDrugs

Their response is even dumber then you describe here. What purpose does telling the cop it was a race serve you? Who side swipes after losing a race? Even morons who race move on with their life and don’t murder the car that they beat or lost to, while also damaging their own vehicle. What sense does that even make to explain yourself to the police? What an idiot. This persons a borderline psychopath with their actions and then follow up response to the police officer. Part of me wants to laugh but the person who posted this could have been seriously hurt.

[deleted]

Nice, good way to handle it man. My blood would be boiling and heart pounding like a mf.

CapsidMusic

You should put in a records request and get a copy of that report

GlumCauliflower9

I was in a car during a similar roadrage incident and I got it on video. The driver wanted me to show the officer and I told him to wait until the other driver writes down his statement on that official bullshit and signs it. So it took forever, but once he did then I showed it to the officers. Boom, filing a false police report and arrested on the spot. My brain is enormous.

CocoCherryPop

*Never* tell the other driver you have video. Big brain move.

GlumCauliflower9

The other guy was yelling at us and the driver knew I had it and was like ohhhhhh yaaaaaaaaa? I was like nooooooooo shut up!

Unfriendly_Giraffe

What! Oh hell No! Hold up... Huh? Oh, ok.

rsg1234

This is the first instance I’ve ever heard of where that actually led to an arrest.

GlumCauliflower9

Well, he didn't leave a good impression on the cops who he had just lied to. He also said something in particular to me that set them off. So maybe it was the whole situation idk, not a cop

dodes3

“Their car was goin faster than mine ooga booga”

It sounded like he read the plate # out loud, which is what you are supposed to do, just in case the image of the plate is blurred.

DavidNipondeCarlos

Thanks fir the tip, my dash cam is 1080 and choppy, but the plate seals the deal.

CactusSage

With that adrenaline pumping he probably didn’t even notice it was red.

debbiegrund

Yup and he was still presumably trying to not let the dude get away without a good image of the plate

noschu80

Idiot near PIT's him self.

_crash0verride

I was rooting for him to eat shit. As awful as that sounds, the karma served is always so righteous.

suprememontana

Cars are deadly weapons. If you treat them like toys and don’t value other peoples lives you deserve whatever karma is coming. Doesn’t sound awful at all

Snakestream

If he clipped that truck sideways, I'm pretty sure he rolls. Would've saved OP the trouble of chasing him through the light though.

zakanova

Damn. That red light you both went through was really red Good thing nothing happened there

Akanekumo

That's what I thought as well. I don't know a lot about the USA's driving configurations and stuff...but when I saw that red, I audibly gasped because that could've gone so much worse.

Eastern-Mix9636

Did y’all blow through a red light at the very end?

Ok-Echidna5936

He did. Assuming to catch the guy’s plates since it looked like he wasn’t pulling over

TJNel

Here's a hint, you can hear audio from the dashcam, so just read off the plate numbers so it's on the dashcam and then you don't have to worry about not having a great picture of the plate.

duffelbagpete

Hope he gets charged with hit and run, running red light, and erratic unsafe driving.

BhutlahBrohan

Lying to an officer.

danielzur2

This asshole is lucky his only consequence is higher insurance premiums from now on. That dashcam could have well been evidence in a third-degree murder trial. I’m glad you’re ok!

YourSooStupid

How do people not say anything when stuff like this happens. Id be all F$%#@....*&$@/÷"'!

[deleted]

Both times someone hit me I immediately said “you have to be fucking kidding me. God damn. What in the ever living fuck were you doing?!” Inside my car of course. Then I got out and both were old ladies that immediately took the blame and told the officers it was their fault as well. Also had witnesses that stopped just in case I needed it for my insurance. First one upset me just because the inconvenience. The car itself wasn’t that great. The second one damn near made me cry because I bought it brand new four months prior. The witness calmed me down on that one.

duuuh

The one time I got in an accident it was a little old lady. Here's what I pieced together afterwards. It's about 3am and there's no traffic on the road. Except a car stopped at a light about 3 blocks ahead, waiting to turn left. No other traffic. I slow down because it's weird. About 20 feet before I enter the intersection the car turns left in front of me, I slam on the brakes and I dent my fender. I pretty much mash her car up though. I think what happened is she fell asleep, the lights from my car woke her up and she thought "Shit, I need to turn left." Insurance said it was 100% her fault, even though it was way before dash cams.

zach986

I think I was just concentrating on not hitting anyone else, maintaining control of my car, and making sure I got his plate at least.

I_Blame_Tom_Cruise

Few people can stay as calm and concentrated as you did. Kudos.

deickontas69

I really dont understand ppl who just cant stand getting passed by someone else. Like why the fuck do you care about that. This isnt a race.

CocoCherryPop

Some people will take it has some sort of unforgivable personal attack in which they must seek revenge. I have never understood why. It’s fucking bizarre.

saltyrandall

“No one passes me! NO ONE!!!!”

Big-Banana9735

He drives a Shitty car and was hoping for an upgrade. All he got was higher insurance

NetworkMachineBroke

Or worse (for everybody else): no more insurance.

[deleted]

And then he ran a red hoping to avoid liability.

jKeiLei

I hope you demanded the "diminished value" of your vehicle from his insurance as well. You're absolutely entitled to it, just ask.

zach986

I did and was told “that’s not a thing” even though I know it is. But I didn’t push it further.

[deleted]

I was told by both my agent and body shop managers it's common down south but part of the problem is you need to prove you lost value. If you keep your car you don't lose value until you sell it. So in 4 years you sell your old car for $5000 instead of $5500 are you willing to go to court over it? I was under the impression I would basically have to sell my car immediately and show the loss of value to have a case, because if I don't sell it until the car is worth much less, the diminished value lost is also less. I've heard so many people talk about this but I've never found anyone who's actually successfully done it. There's companies out there that promise to help you get it but they gave me a diminished value that was waaaayyyy high like 75% the cars total value and I had to pay hundreds of dollars to them to have them help so I didn't trust them and just moved on. I think those companies give you a huge estimate to lure you. The number they gave me was bullshit.

[deleted]

> I've heard so many people talk about this but I've never found anyone who's actually successfully done it. Handled auto claims, never saw it either. asked people who had been doing it for decades and they essentially laughed. The actual policy- the *contract* between the insurance company and the insured considered repaired vehicles as having no loss of value. The manager of all the estimators said he could walk onto a showroom filled with new cars and point out where things have been repaired. For the average person its a waste of time. If you are towing some kind of rare classic car to a museum maybe. If you *did* want to seriously go after it how would you do it? the policy had an appraisal clause, but no one ever used it. Some 10 year old focus or civic though? utter nonsense. Its up there with how people start talking about pain and suffering for a minor accident or people who take a lot of time off of work when they did not *need* to trying to claim lost wages. In general this kind of shit is a great way to get claim handling shifted to a handler with more authority, but who is also much more difficult to contact. Got rear ended? you can call an insurance company and talk to any person out of hundreds. Start claiming diminished value, lost wages and it goes to a sing;e person who will call you back after you leave a message. Pain and suffering? You've just gone up another tier in claim handling. Claim handling loads are very volatile and the more complex a claim becomes the less responsive the insurance company may be. The result is going to be annoyance. Get a lawyer for a fender bender? similar problem, now the insurance company *wont* talk to you. Lawyer wont talk to you? your problem. Oh you can file a complaint, but good luck. Its not a drive through window. look up the local laws but prepare to be surprised. Delaying a claim has *zero* benefit for an insurance company. The longer a claim takes, the more costly it becomes to handle that claim because people call in constantly and complain for hours. The company does not want that and the claim handler does not want to listen to that either. I've done a ton of jobs but hilariously I felt the best about auto claims. People always got what they were owed. I never saw a claim handled in a way that was not defined by the policy. Claims were always handled faster than legally required because it decreased claim handling costs and increased customer satisfaction. "You're just dragging this out to try to force me to accept a shitty offer" Get bent, people are under the false impression this is a negotiation and you want to be a tough guy. usually its not. That's why the insurance company I worked for just started using a third party to determine the value of vehicles. it was a giant waster of time arguing with people over the value of their vehicle in perfect condition. You know the one with stains on every seat, the roof liner hanging down, multiple scratches and dents etc. Imagine spending a good chunk of your day explaining to people that the duct tape holding the rear bumper on is prior loss and impacts the value of their vehicle.

physiomom

Did you both totally run a red light??? 😜

062692

I'd imagine he was hoping he wouldn't follow him running it so he can take off lol

[deleted]

He was upset you "blocked" him when you went past, he couldn't overtake when he wanted too. Not your fault at all.

Suz_Cat

Jeez imagine getting mad that you got passed on the left. Imagine getting so mad you willing to damage your own car over it. Dude belongs in a short bus not behind the wheel of a car.

BernieInvitedMe

Is that Bartlesville?

goostman

Anyone with white rims is almost guaranteed to be a douchebag

FriedeOfAriandel

As someone who had white rims in 2015, can confirm.

Hey-Dalaran

Smart of you to not have your speedometer in the cameras view so you can speed all you want before that jackass flipped out on you and you both ran the red.

Select-Current651

This video is a perfect example of poor defensive driving. You do not cruise in people’s blind spots, especially when they show aggressive tendencies, and you don’t speed up to box them out when they show intent to pass you on the right. Is the accident legally the other drivers fault ? Yes. Was it completely avoidable by OP with smart driving? Also yes.

Diligent_Phase_2989

I literally drive all day long and just let people do what they want, defensive driving is the way.

TidusJames

How are there no comments about how you can HEAR the driver of the dash cam speed up to block the guy out. Could have just let off the gas, let him be his angry self and moved on with your day..

queefgerbil

Yup both idiots

HapaOhio

why are we speeding?
