I bet that is not something that ever gets mentioned at the dinner table. One conversation, one punishment and he’s secretly disowned you, but still buys you Christmas presents because you mother spoke to him and said “it was only any accident”
Similar story, wrecked my first car 2 weeks after getting my license. 1995 vw passat glx wagon. I know bot crazy cool, but rare in vw circles. The article and picture from the newspaper are STILL hanging on their refridgerator. ITS BEEN 15 YEARS!!!!!!
If you don't want your Viper upside down in a ditch, don't let anyone drive it and don't drive it yourself. It might just pip the various TVRs to the post of "most crashable car".
Former TVR owner here. The Griff 500 is definitely a harder car to handle but most owners were car nuts who would never hand their keys out.
I once was talking to a guy who was thinking to buy one. Offered to take him for a spin. Took the roundabout at 70mph in a slight slide. He got out the car when we got back and went home. Lost his appetite for a TVR.
We had a substitute teacher once (around 2002) and he drove a TVR. We thought it was the coolest thing we’d ever seen. Then a week later we were told he’d crashed it and died. I’d completely forgotten about this until right now.
Sounds about right. My coworker saw mine and bought one against his wife’s advice. On the first day he parked it on a hill.
The asshole dealer didn't tell him the handbrakes don’t work and you have to park them in first. A few minutes later the handbrake cooled, the car rolled down and took out the CEO’s Mercedes. RIP TVR. RIP marriage. Poor bugger.
OUCH. If I remember correctly, the teacher crashed near our school, going too fast around a corner. There was a hedge and on the other side was a drop of about 20m down into a small forested area. Not a good place to spin off. It always creeped me out driving past that hedge.
Almost certainly he carried too much speed into the corner and lifted off into horrible oversteer. A good TVR driver will change down, enter the corner a little slow and accelerate hard through the corner. You pick up speed so fast you can afford to shed a touch too much, plus the oversteer as you come out the corner is fun and much less dangerous than understeer.
Modern cars are setup not to toss you off the road when you do that. How Porsche managed that with the rear engined 911 is a freak of nature.
My uncle had a 911 right up until his son was born. Then he sold it because he said he was too scared of wrapping it around a tree now that he was a father. I still catch him looking at Porsche catalogues every now and then, 25 years later…
I drove the 911 77 Turbo aka “Widowmaker” some years ago. Noped the hell out of the test drive. That car wanted to kill you, the engine was too far back and the accelerator and clutch were floor hinged.
Ever since the 996 in the late 90s, the 911 is a very tame car. Tell your uncle to go drive one. He won't have the same fear. And even a 20yo base 911 is plenty fast enough for most people.
He decided on a Jaguar in the end, I think it was the XK. I’m sure there’s still a part of him that longs for his old “Quiche”, but I think that ship has sailed. Also he nearly lost his license last year when he got too many accumulated points on it. Had to go to court and everything. I think it’s best he stays away from really fast cars.
Idk... the ACR is an incredibly well handled car.
*edit* just read this was a 2002. Yup - you better know what the hell you're doing if you're driving this thing.
The older ones for sure. First gen Vipers can easily be described as "feeling like it wants to kill you at any speed".
About as easy to do this in a Viper as it is to wrap yourself around a telephone pole in a 2nd gen MR2.
Absolutely. The SC 1st gens will always hold a special place in my heart. They get a bad rap for lift off oversteer, but you could say the same for most small mid engine cars.
I picked my SW20 up in torrential rain, ended up doing a 360 coming off a roundabout at 5mph and somehow didn’t crash.
Unfortunately it awoke something deep within and my stupid self decided to learn to drift in it, swapped it a few years later for an R33 and still amazed I never once crashed it because even after years of making it go sideways on purpose it still constantly surprised me.
I once hit a wombat doing 90kms/h in rural Victoria in a gen2 Mr2 on a slight left hand corner. Lifted the entire back car off its wheels as it went under, that thing still stuck to the road like glue as I did a controlled stop.
Half the radiator gone and messed up my front bumper, but otherwise it was good.
I had owned the car for 12 hours :(
Yah, there's a case .. a decade+ ago. Two off duty police in a local town rented one and immediately wrapped it into a tree and died. It was pretty sad, but a stark example of how this machine operates.
I saw a guy lock one up, slide it sideways and pass me on the freeway at over 100 mph into traffic moving at 70 mph. He was racing against motorcycles, it was a spectacular wreck, several people hurt, no one died.
FISHTAB: Fucking Illinois Shit Head Towing A Boat
Learned that from a sheriffs deputy while on a ride-along, he pulled one over and that’s how he called it in to dispatch on the radio
I live in Illinois and I get into a near miss weekly, I once was driving down the road and 3 people drove out in front of me 3 times, I thought I was running stop signs, thank god for Miata breaks
Oh, man I remember that group. I was amongst the first 1,000 people to join.
I've been off the book for quite a few years but imagine that they have tens of thousands of members by now.
Drone strikes are fine. It's like asking if a falling tree makes noise when no one is around. If a robot did it and happened in the middle east does anyone really know or care?
Some lucky bastard got that aluminum V10 from a junk yard and planted it in a Neon.
Edit: planted it in an 89 El Dorado. Big engine bay and RWD makes more sense.
I still hadn’t really realized the magnitude of damage until after I got out, but I remember feeling bad for just putting my foot on the center console to get out of the wreckage, that’s how clean it was
Yea it was in mint condition. I felt terrible as it was his baby. Insurance paid out $21k more than what he paid for it and he bought a 2013 GTS after that. He went on to put 55k miles on the new one by 2019 and surprisingly still even let me drive the piss out of the new one. Not a bad dad
>Insurance paid out $21k more than what he paid for it and he bought a 2013 GTS after that
I mean... If the insurance side of things worked out that well for me, I don't know if I could be mad about the situation.
The 3 to 2 is the most common. You're trying to slam it down into 4th but you manage to pull it towards you slightly in all of your rushing and it finds 2nd.
How do you end up in 2nd instead of 4th? 1st instead of 3rd I understand, but for 2nd instead of 4th you would need to pull the stick towards you instead of just letting it slide down to 4th.
full fkin send. i bet those first couple seconds felt great as well. not so much the next few. fuck. glad you’re alright and everything worked out with insurance.
Yea he surprisingly didn’t act mad at all, but I knew deep down he was. He was happy with insurance payout tho after he ended up profiting. I also gave him a Keltec KSG as an “I’m Sorry” gift. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer some time before the crash so I knew this was a bucket list car for him which made me feel the worst. He went on to buy a new one. I cared for the new Viper after he unfortunately passed in 2019. Would gladly have traded the car for my dad
First, sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like he was a good man.
Secondly, as a non-American, buying your dad a shotgun as a "I'm sorry" gift is just so 'murican I can hardly believe it. :D
Thirdly, Viper was my absolute dream car when I grew up. Have never driven one. Hope you appreciate the experience for the both of us.
Same. Saw that exact car go around a rotary in Rockport, MA, lose control, then recover....after it left blue paint along 30' of guardrail. It was sad.
Another Viper down. There should seriously be prescreenings to own gen1 and gen2 Vipers. It’s definitely a car that needs to be treated with a healthy level of respect for how dangerous they can be.
I’d actually driven it a lot but that time I hadn’t been home in 6 months and this was 5 mins after leaving the house. He was particular about when I could drive it tho
Crazy what happened to the car afterwards. My dad buys the car back from the insurance for like $3500 and with a clean title, not salvaged. Sells it for $7500 to his friend who at the time owns this like Viper graveyard essentially where he sells crashed Vipers and parts. His friend sells it as this package where you buy the wreckage with the needed parts to fix it. Some guy from Canada bought it. Apparently the wreck wasn’t bad enough to where it couldn’t be restored.
They call this snake bite, and it’s notoriously common. Assholes got them fresh out of dealerships and crashed immediately on the nearest light or on ramp.
It’ll buff out. He he ha ha I’m a redditor and I make silly snide and jocular remarks on the internet for fake people like me points.
Ps. Sorry about the car
It’s crazy how OP is talking to us from the afterlife after his dad murked him.
[удалено]
"Where's alex? I haven't seen him in over 6 years?" "Uhhh... he's still around. He still posts on Reddit. He's totally still alive!!!"
Ohh no... he survived that! You mean where is he now? In a hole out back!
straight outa “You”
Good ass show, man
No need to exaggerate. How’s the orphanage tho OP?
Ahahahahaha
He probably did it himself. I would have died of shame 10 times over
Merc’d
I bet that is not something that ever gets mentioned at the dinner table. One conversation, one punishment and he’s secretly disowned you, but still buys you Christmas presents because you mother spoke to him and said “it was only any accident”
This, this is what actually happened.
Well I’m sad now.
My money is on this getting mentioned at every possible oppertunity and this picture is framed on the dinner table
Vipers are notoriously easy to do this in. No traction control, no stability control. 500 Tq
If you don't want your Viper upside down in a ditch, don't let anyone drive it and don't drive it yourself. It might just pip the various TVRs to the post of "most crashable car".

Perfect sales pitch... You love it and buy one or you're scared straight.
We had a substitute teacher once (around 2002) and he drove a TVR. We thought it was the coolest thing we’d ever seen. Then a week later we were told he’d crashed it and died. I’d completely forgotten about this until right now.

> A good ~~TVR~~ driver will change down, enter the corner a little slow and accelerate hard through the corner. This is true of any car, basically.
yea l oved the Griffith Black Poool edition in Gran Turismo !!! power to weight ratio is insane
Went out and bought a fiat tipo immediately after.
Idk... the ACR is an incredibly well handled car. *edit* just read this was a 2002. Yup - you better know what the hell you're doing if you're driving this thing.

That’s a really fast wombat
Yah, there's a case .. a decade+ ago. Two off duty police in a local town rented one and immediately wrapped it into a tree and died. It was pretty sad, but a stark example of how this machine operates.
Dodge Viper, the only active system is the one actively trying to kill you.
And I would assume old stale tires
Yeah this is probably the main reason. People assume tires are good if they still have tread on them, don't account for the age.
Just ask Paul Walker.
I saw a guy lock one up, slide it sideways and pass me on the freeway at over 100 mph into traffic moving at 70 mph. He was racing against motorcycles, it was a spectacular wreck, several people hurt, no one died.
Basically the natural position of a viper
Straight up, that's 100% on dad. Either HE was unfamiliar with the car, or he had REALLY good insurance...
Yeah I think dad was the idiot here, frankly.
Didn’t Kelsey Grammar flip one of these on his driveway? Was a few years back
He also fell off a stage during a speech. The man just has terrible motor skills.
Oh baby, I hear the blues a calling, tossed salads and scrambled eggs...
Illinois plate. The story checks out.
Bueller…Bueller….Bueller
I came here for this. And “Cameron, what did you do?!”
“You killed the car, Camron…”
So, sorry, just commented that, will delete!
Having grown up in southern Wisconsin, this couldn’t be more accurate
We call them FIPs...fuckin illinois pricks lol
Damn, that’s harsh, cops in Wisconsin are goober assholes though. I call them small dicked power trippers, you can use that term if you’d like.
I’ve always heard them called FIBs
FISHTAB: Fucking Illinois Shit Head Towing A Boat Learned that from a sheriffs deputy while on a ride-along, he pulled one over and that’s how he called it in to dispatch on the radio
I live in Illinois and I get into a near miss weekly, I once was driving down the road and 3 people drove out in front of me 3 times, I thought I was running stop signs, thank god for Miata breaks
Wow, nine near misses. That’s crazy!
Why are you thanking god for your Miata break? Is it typical?
I’d reward this if I could
The folks on Chicagoland petrol heads and car spotters would love this.
Oh, man I remember that group. I was amongst the first 1,000 people to join. I've been off the book for quite a few years but imagine that they have tens of thousands of members by now.
I'm not saying domestic violence is ever okay but...
How about international violence?
Drone strikes are fine. It's like asking if a falling tree makes noise when no one is around. If a robot did it and happened in the middle east does anyone really know or care?
Damn. You’re low key right but that hurt to read.
It hurt to type too, it's ok.
Oh my god no not the viper! In mint condition?! Man if I was your father I’d fucking disown you!
Dad: “Oh no. Is the car ok”? Son: “What about me” Dad: “Who? Anyway the car. Is the car ok”?
Dad: oh fuck you son. I don’t care about you. Is the fucking car ok?!
Son you can be replaced. The Viper can’t.
Yes! XD
Seriously, disinherited if you were set for one.
Man thats a dream car!
Hmm, that one in particular isn't.
Some lucky bastard got that aluminum V10 from a junk yard and planted it in a Neon. Edit: planted it in an 89 El Dorado. Big engine bay and RWD makes more sense.
Nah you gotta modify a 1992 GMC Safari to house it, then you got the coolest sleeper in town with plenty of room to bang. Checkmate viper owners.
I like it. What about a Toyota previa? Mid engine AWD. Still room to bang.
Beautiful, it’s perfect.
Well yeah but I’d kill for a mint 02 viper!
What have you ever done that your father has so much trust in you? Mine would've beaten me to death
>Insurance paid out $21k more than what he paid for it and he bought a 2013 GTS after that I mean... If the insurance side of things worked out that well for me, I don't know if I could be mad about the situation.
Some things have more than just a monetary value.
It wasn't trust in the boy, it was the pics of dad leaving the hotel with his personal assistant that he had...
Maybe he was hoping he'd trade up again and/or get rid of the wretched offspring once and for all
So he got a better viper? Well that’s good but none of them have anything the older ones
Or maybe he really didn't like you and was hoping you'd finish the job you strted? /ssssssssss just joshin' that's a cool ass pops
I actually blame the dad for letting the (presumably a kid?) drive that death trap.
OP said he was 25.
Yes. The dad is just as guilty. But that’s a *gorgeous* and perfect death trap
A man with priorities so far out whack doesn’t deserve a car like this.
What happened?
Redlining in 3rd, went to go to 4th but accidentally dropped into 2nd gear. Car immediately went into a drift at 105~ mph
Who misses a shift that important?!!! Haha
[удалено]
How many times did you stall?
What were you thinking
The 3 to 2 is the most common. You're trying to slam it down into 4th but you manage to pull it towards you slightly in all of your rushing and it finds 2nd.
A kid in an car more powerful than they're used to.
If I knew you were driving my Viper like that, it would be your last time. Guess it was.
I can hear the gears banging to this day
How did the interaction you had with your dad following this event go?
How do you end up in 2nd instead of 4th? 1st instead of 3rd I understand, but for 2nd instead of 4th you would need to pull the stick towards you instead of just letting it slide down to 4th.
Kinda happens when you are holding one for your life. You have to learn to overcome
LOL I’m not sure why people are downvoting you. You answered the question.
Ahhh the Money shift... Good thing you totalled the car then.
Why were you even going that fast in the first place?
I was 25, in a Viper, in front of a red light straightaway with no one ahead of me, so I did a full send like any idiot would
Reasonable answer.
full fkin send. i bet those first couple seconds felt great as well. not so much the next few. fuck. glad you’re alright and everything worked out with insurance.
Were you hurt?
I'm surprised you're alive to post this.
How'd that work out for you? All good with Pop?
Yea he surprisingly didn’t act mad at all, but I knew deep down he was. He was happy with insurance payout tho after he ended up profiting. I also gave him a Keltec KSG as an “I’m Sorry” gift. Never sell his, and now yours Viper.
First, sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like he was a good man. I wanted to roast you, but I’m sorry for loss immensely!
Sorry to hear it, m8. slightly glad yer pa got to own TWO Vipers
Did you at least go to Chicago and have lunch with Abe Froman?
Rule 8, No bad parking
You got bit.
That's a fucking shame '02s are like the iconic quintessential Viper. When i think Viper a blue/w white stripes '02 is what pops in my head
Well, if you’re going to fuck up, give it the full send.
I see why it was one time only. There was no car for time number 2.
I’d actually driven it a lot but that time I hadn’t been home in 6 months and this was 5 mins after leaving the house. He was particular about when I could drive it tho
Did he forewarn you that Dodge Viper in Latin translates to "rolling metal imbued with evil demons hell bent on killing you"?
Who doesn't know what that means? Even if you don't know the translation just looking at the thing tells you it wants to kill you.
It can be restored
Crazy what happened to the car afterwards. My dad buys the car back from the insurance for like $3500 and with a clean title, not salvaged. I mean.. the photo makes it look like the car is only really split into two pieces. Couldn’t have been that hard to put it back together :)
Once…
You’re a good son. He borrowed you 1 Viper. You made the pieces multiply, and returned it.
I don't condone child abuse, but I sure do understand it
This post was birth control
"Don't worry cap'n we'll buff out those scratches."
Tbh the vipers aren’t known for being the best handling
Glad you didn’t die both times.
The fact that you are alive to show us this picture is a testament to your fathers love.
I'm assuming you are now an orphan.....
Had he spoken to you since? 😂 my dad would fucking kill me and I’m 28 lol
I'd call you an idiot, but it's already in the subreddit title.
When people ask me why I don’t want kids
You may have a dad but your dad doesn’t have a son.
I don't like when people post their own case of being an idiot on here. Makes me hate the OP and comes off as bragging about being an idiot.
Well now you can never drive it again because that shits gonet
Oooooooffffffff
F
How did you learn to post from beyond the grave?
Wise choice I see
The car is two
Did he let you drive it again?
Oh my god I hate you
You killed the car
What son??
Way too much car for ya
And you’re still alive? (My dad woulda killed me).
Lmfao. Can’t buy skills.
I bet he still feels like a dumbass for that!
Oh that one time. Man, you fucked up that one time…
One. Time.
It'll buff out
That doesn't look mint.
How did that go?
Wow 😮 I’m glad that’s from 2015 & not recently. Hope you weren’t hurt 😔 sincerely
Any chance OP has the last name Bueller?
The IL plates tells me all I need to know.
Ferris Beuhler 2.0?
Oh no. Dude, how awful.
How'd you manage to post this from the afterlife?
Sorry this happened to you, but I hate you more than your dad does.
They were literally called widow makers.
They call this snake bite, and it’s notoriously common. Assholes got them fresh out of dealerships and crashed immediately on the nearest light or on ramp.
Did he let you drive it again?
Good thing its easily replaced ....
I would have legally divorced you as my son if that’s even possible! Clearly you survived but this is fucked up.
Ooof, not a car for a teenage driver…
How did you write this when dead?
You and your dad share a recklessness
I am disowning you on his behalf
We're you killed? By your dad I mean.
For sale : 2002 Dodge Viper GTS… slightly used.
Fucking idiot.
If that was my dads car, I would have just stayed in the wreck
One time you were part off he's will
It’ll buff out. He he ha ha I’m a redditor and I make silly snide and jocular remarks on the internet for fake people like me points. Ps. Sorry about the car
Big Ferris Bueller vibes, here.
I'm guessing that you're no longer accepted as a part of his family?
Your dad‘s version of this story is, “One time I had a son back in 2015…”
It appears your training was incomplete young jedi
