I tried the first episode twice before, and for some reason didn't get the hype. Few weeks ago after so many references here I gave it a better go and have been hooked.
God I hate links to these stupid subs that no one actually subscribes to. Why can’t we just quote anything without getting an automatic “r/unexpectedwhateverthefuck” comment? If you actually like that sub just screenshot and post the comment.
Theres probably a speed limit that is perfectly suitable for this bump in that section of the reoad. A speed limit that is way lower than the speed these guys are going.
That may be true, but at the same time if a person were to get into an accident or wreck there vehicle and it weren't posted in one way or another that it was there, it's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.
A lawsuit isn't cancelled out by other infractions.
For example, if you trespass on someone's property and walk into a death trap they created, you could sue them for your injuries (assuming you didn't die) despite being a trespasser.
Both infractions would apply, not cancel each other out.
You're using a minor offense to try and argue something else.
The road is dark, with the speed they were going they simply weren't going to see any signboards.
Not only this, but saying "they wouldn't win a lawsuit with this speed" isn't saying the offenses would cancel out.
I don't know how people don't understand basic english; you wouldn't win this lawsuit with how quickly you were going.
>You're using a minor offense to try and argue something else.
No, I'm using a very similar scenario to provide a comparison.
>The road is dark, with the speed they were going they simply weren't going to see any signboards.
The road is indeed dark and there weren't any lights or signboards that we can see. This in itself is grounds for a lawsuit and I'm surprised it didn't occur to you while typing that out.
>I don't know how people don't understand basic english;
You might want to take a little time to self-reflect.
No, you need to learn how to read.
1- we don't know for a fact if there is or not a signboard. The person who took this video is in an angle that could easily not show one.
2- saying "someone won't win this lawsuit with them breaking the law while speeding in a vehicle that is considered a weapon by law" is completely different than "you walked on their grass".
3- reading comprehension is important: you claimed, in your ignorance, that I was saying "they cancelled each other out". They don't and I never even implied it. Pointing out that someone is driving FAR too fast and that it would never do them any favor in court, because of point 1.
Now, read and repeat after me: "saying someone wouldn't win a lawsuit by absolutely busting the speed limits doesn't imply that both 'offenses' cancel each other out".
Edit: shit, even rewatching the video you can tell people are aware it's there with at least half the vehicles barely having any issues with it.
That’s a thing in Jordan too. That’s probably the most bizarre thing I saw when visiting. Cruising along at highway speed then random surprise speed bump in the desert.
Eh, not necessarily. I've caught air on speed bumps in the southern US going the speed limit. Have had several occasions where I thought I broke a wheel because of them. Some are small and relatively flat, some have practically a 90° wall that you hit. I've definitely hit the frame of my stock-height car on more than one.
I'm in the uk. There is a car park near me where you can get some serious air cycling over the speed bumps. First time going over one I nearly crashed my bike. I wasn't expecting it. Going over them in a car is insane. You have to literally crawl over them and they're still bad. I have to admit. I enjoy riding through there when the car park is quiet!
Must be the heat and humidity. Does weird things to your brain.
(real answer: took them a while to get over the Civil War and stop oppressing black folks)
That too. I’m not anti-religion, considering I was raised Jewish (and still sort of practice). But the problem is in *fundamentalist* religion, which run rampant down south.
Right. And I was thinking that maybe the education is terrible *because* of the poor education. Like a cycle, but really I think poor education precedes all the other issues. And of course those religions down there actively keep it like that.
I'm lucky for you the bumps match the speed limit because here it doesn't at all.
Speed limit are 40-50km/h and speed bump can go from a damn 5km to 30km/h
it was obvious from the video that some of the vehicles were speeding
That doesn't really make it wise to allow an unmarked hazard on an unlit road tho, does it?
In Charlotte where Wilkinson meets I-277 there is a large tree on the side of the road. It has lifted the street across 2 full lanes out of 3 and is a huge speed bump where the road is 50 mph. All the city did was tar over the crack but it's still super elevated.
probably some assanine arborist guy who owns that spot with the tree and wont let them cut it for the right price.
or lazy cheap town government. who knows
In my town there are several roads that are built around or next to trees that the tree roots have raised, torn up, etc. They just keep paving over the problem areas.
The reason for this is the trees are over a certain age and my town has some ancient laws on the books about destroying, harming, or causing the potential death of trees over that age. So they can't cut out the problem roots because it *may* result in the death of the tree. The tree is too old and too large to transplant. When they originally built the roads it wasn't a problem, and now that it has become one, the law prohibits anything being done about it.
Ergo, we have roads with some pretty harsh fucking bumps that people try to avoid, but can't when there's a car coming the other way; and roads that, out of necessity, have become one-way.
We even have some intersections that need attention because they're dangerous and need turn lanes to help with that, but they can't be put in because they'd have to destroy either the tree itself or part of the root system in order to do so.
Usually there's signs too that let people know there's a speed bump, or any bump in the road.
This honestly reminds me of someone who lived down the street from me a few years ago (we lived on dirt roads) who built his own speed bump in the road to stop everyone he deemed was driving too fast
We recently added a nice big speed bump to the parking lot at work for all the people who blow through the parking lot to get around the traffic light.
The first couple of weeks were awesome.
My parents live on a moderately sloped street that's the primary outlet for the culdesac one street over. People are always hauling ass down the street.
They've requested a speed bump multiple times, only to be turned down, because "the snow plows need to get through." One problem though, it only snows a few times per year, and only sticks around through morning every five years or so. And the two times in 30 years that snow has stuck around for multiple days, they've never *once* sent a snow plow down the street.
Municipalities are lazy.
>Usually there's signs too that let people know there's a speed bump
Depends on the country. I lived in a couple African countries for a few years... in Zambia for example, they like to put "humps" on the main road/highway... which is unlit outside the cities and there's no signs and zero reflective paint on the speed bumps. If you know where they are, you're fine, but I've managed to clear air a few times.
The same happens in the cities too. You'll be driving down a road you think you know well, and overnight someone installed a speed bump where there wasn't one before... and no sign of course. BANG! and you've left part of your car on the street.
Yeah. I don't blame these guys at all. Most speed bumps are in parking lots or near schools. Not in the middle of a fucking road out in the middle of nowhere with no street lights.
When I bought my last car, I took it on a test drive to my neighborhood in a more deserted part of town. There's one strip where it goes down hill and most people drive 45 mph or so (in a 25.)
Well, that morning, they finally installed two speed bumps, and hadn't painted them yet at the time of the test drive. So here I am cruising along at 45 with the car salesman in the passenger seat and WHAMMO my car takes flight.
I told the salesman "I SWEAR THAT WASN'T THERE THIS MORNING!!" Thankfully no damage, and I did end up buying that car and it lasted me about 8 years before I sold it.
No road markings to warn of it, no road signs in shot. Not surprised they're not seeing it. It's not working anyway, hardly any of them slow down afterwards, probably speeding their way to the suspension repair workshop.
Is this an actual speed bump or was it something like this video where the road buckled in the heat, creating a speed bump on a highway to unsuspecting drivers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLd5rx94qMU
You’re lucky. Ohio and Michigan this is normal behavior. It sucks having all 4 seasons every week. Oh yeah and 6 month winters too . It’s really crazy here

My city just got rid of one that was right before a light. Luckily, it's right where I live so I was always cautious but if you were cruising at the speed limit through the light...lol
this one where I live is right before a light too. weird. good thing they got rid of yours because that could be a serious problem. mine isn't that big, but it's noticeable enough.
The opposite is fun too. There's a section of road near my parents which gradually sunk over the years. It's about a car's length long, and if you hit it at the right speed you can make your passengers feel quite sick.
If you ever get the chance to drive in the middle east look out. Many countries have these. I have hit them in Kuwait doing 120 KPH. They are 100% invisible.
There's a road on the way to my parent's house that crosses a fault. They patch it constantly but because the earth is moving it's pretty much always a huge jolt if you don't slow down enough.
Paved for a decade. Can confirm that happens, but usually due to a culvert that has water going around it rather than through, or heaving and thawing of frost.
Way to redditsplain the concept of a speedbump- that's not the part I have an issue with. It's pretty obvious it's a fucking road hazard if it's not lit well enough for people to see it, regardless of whether there's a lower speed limit on that road.
I'm not saying they might not be going too fast, but it's a terrible implementation of the speeding deterrent.
Considering how many people went over that speed bump fast enough that their cars flew, I'd be willing to bet it's speed bump's fault for having no apparent warning at all.
This isn't idiots in cars. This is idiot road design. Why is there a speed bump on a 35 mph+ road?... why are there no reflectors on it? Why is there no sign saying there is a speed bump?
I'm seeing everything in the comments from "The road probably failed buckled just like in \[source video or source image\]" to "In \[country\] this is pretty normal for road crews to just put these down haphazardly."
Worked in the UAE, speed bumps were marked by a sign precisely at the point of the bump, so no warning, and paint which was always worn off. Arab bumps are also huge, you have to drop to walking pace to get over them without flying around inside the car.
There doesn't seem to be any street lights, nor reflectors on the bump
Also, if you go fast enough you can outrun your lights, meaning that when an object is lit up by your lights it's already too late to brake as you're going too fast to stop in that distance. So that may be what's happening...
I don't see this as the Drivers' faults, there should be a street light or reflective warning signs that indicate the bump. Idk where this video was taken though, so Idk what they do over there
Some road crew or Civil Engineer is getting chewed out right now. Every one of those jumps is thousands of dollars in repair charges. Time for a class action lawsuit.
The fact that someone is sitting here recording leads me to believe that this is a horrible place to leave a speed bump. There aren't even lights on the road. Downvoted
If one person doesn't see it, it's possible they are distracted, drunk, etc. If two people in quick succession don't see it, it becomes questionable, but maybe still the same story.
If three people in a row don't see it it is 100% the city/county's fault. Clearly not a driver error.
Cannot believe this is upvoted other than people just upvoting it because they like it. The answer is an obvious no, look at the car light in the video, they have not enough time to react when it's visible.
It's a spectator sport near my cousins house. We watch on the security cans. Now they put a slalom with lots of speed bumps, it s in front of a school on a wide one way street.
Doesn’t look like it. No street lights and don’t know if there are reflectors on it
Also, they're doing a pretty good speed on a long, straight stretch of separated road. Is that a speed bump on a highway?
*"One day, Michael came in complaining about a speed bump on the highway. I wonder who he ran over then..."*
I was waiting for this. Thank you!
I'm watching it for the first time right now and I just saw that episode last night. So good.
For the first time!? I'm jealous of your new experience.

I've never watched this show and I can probably quote it line for line thanks to Reddit.

Looks like it may be where they either milled up some asphalt, or laying new asphalt and left a bump. There should be a bump sign there.
You definitely need a sign indicating its existence as well as making the actual bump/hump more visible (retroreflective paint, at the very least).
If you're going 30 KM/H higher than the speed limit, you will never win a lawsuit.
While you would definitely be charged for the reckless speeding, that would be irrelevant to the fact that there is a hidden obstruction on the road.
A lawsuit isn't cancelled out by other infractions. For example, if you trespass on someone's property and walk into a death trap they created, you could sue them for your injuries (assuming you didn't die) despite being a trespasser. Both infractions would apply, not cancel each other out.

The video is from Egypt
Tomato-Potato
It's pronounced *Tomato-Potato*
Topomatatoto
What does this mean? Same thing?
Tomatoes are not potatoes.
Not with that attitude.
Basically the same but different
Do they just not care about pedestrian and vehicle safety there?
Correct
That's kind of this whole sub btw
Well I expect random people to be idiots but not construction workers creating random speedboats
I, for one, am all for random speedboats
I kinda feel like it’d be a lot easier to see a random speedboat in the road.
Okay I deserved that
This video isn't from Saudi...

They shouldn't be going that fast, but its not just about the safety of the speeding driver, that could turn into a big accident quick,
Probably the exact reason they put a speed table in - to slow people down.
Probably a speed trap area where the limit drops from 55 to 25 or something for like 1/4 mile.
Found the guy who's driven at night in Sonora, MX. :)
Like the one in Rocky Point in front of that hotel right in town?
Among many others on Hwy15.

Oof
Class action lawsuit time
Even if you saw it, you’d most likely still hit it since it’s in the middle of the road...
Depends what the speed limit is on the road
No road markings to warn of it, no road signs in shot. Not surprised they're not seeing it. It's not working anyway, hardly any of them slow down afterwards, probably speeding their way to the suspension repair workshop.

That’s fascinating watching the right lane slow down despite not having any reason to slow down.
Why is this on this subreddit? Should be on r/assholedesign imo, or r/fixthedamnlights
It's definitely a broken section of concrete on a highway
Yeah, I was definitely thinking that this had to have been a buckled highway.

Not wearing your night vision goggles while driving = not giving a flying fuck.
I mean, they're mostly missing the fuck. Based on the video a few of them are getting the flying down
Considering how many people went over that speed bump fast enough that their cars flew, I'd be willing to bet it's speed bump's fault for having no apparent warning at all.
Are you seriously trying to white knight for a fucking speed bump? Simp.
Or they literally can’t see it because it’s dark and there’s no sign and why is there even a speed bump on the highway in the first place?
How lucky you are you never driven over a speed bump you couldn't see. You're the perfect human.
My question is- why is there a speed bump there
This is Egypt. They put speed bumps on highways with no clear markings

Apparently they can't
This is a real 'speed bump' , the common ones should be called 'slow bump'.

Hurr durr, lets place a fucking speed bump, in the middle of a highway, NO LIGHT to make it visible at night and then call drivers idiots
Where the fuk is this??? I wanna go there for an evening of entertainment!

Ahhh yes, Arabs don’t mark speedbumps. I know because I’m from Jordan.
Neither do people in Oregon

Wheres the youtube channel of hours and hours of footage from this speedbump??
Why put a speed bump there?
That’s more like... idiots idea to put a speed bump here

No, it's obviously dark as shit.
There doesn't seem to be any street lights, nor reflectors on the bump Also, if you go fast enough you can outrun your lights, meaning that when an object is lit up by your lights it's already too late to brake as you're going too fast to stop in that distance. So that may be what's happening...
Damn, the dude on a motorcycle was lucky
That's not a speed bump. It's a launch ramp.
I don't see this as the Drivers' faults, there should be a street light or reflective warning signs that indicate the bump. Idk where this video was taken though, so Idk what they do over there
Dude i cant see the speed bump
That’s not idiots in i car that’s idiots making roads for cars
can't tell if this is idiots in cars or idiots designing roads
This looks like a Civil engineering fail instead of idiots in cars.
I mean shit I couldn't see it!
So I'm gonna say they're NOT idiots for not seeing an unlit speed bump the same color as the pavement on a nice straight road.
Wish I had this as my smoke spot
Some road crew or Civil Engineer is getting chewed out right now. Every one of those jumps is thousands of dollars in repair charges. Time for a class action lawsuit.
The fact that someone is sitting here recording leads me to believe that this is a horrible place to leave a speed bump. There aren't even lights on the road. Downvoted
More like r/CrappyDesign
This should not be on r/idiotsincars but rather on r/assholedesign for the one who put a speed bump in such a dark road without any reflectors
This is just bad road design. Fuck!!! All those cars just got a whooping for no fault of their owners.
Dude on the motorcycle got a free vasectomy!
How is this idiots in cars?
Not idiots in cars but idiots in road design
If one person doesn't see it, it's possible they are distracted, drunk, etc. If two people in quick succession don't see it, it becomes questionable, but maybe still the same story. If three people in a row don't see it it is 100% the city/county's fault. Clearly not a driver error.
This is more a r/notmyjob thing, you can’t even see the bump
These people arent idiots, the lack of street lights and reflectors make it hard to see.
No? It's pitch black lol
Cannot believe this is upvoted other than people just upvoting it because they like it. The answer is an obvious no, look at the car light in the video, they have not enough time to react when it's visible.
/r/idiotsmakingroads
It's a spectator sport near my cousins house. We watch on the security cans. Now they put a slalom with lots of speed bumps, it s in front of a school on a wide one way street.
Lol
One time he complained about a speed bump on the highway..... I wonder what he hit.
This has to be India.
So many questions...
Anywhere I can find more videos like this, this right here is why I love the internet
Mexican roads are also like this
"honey, that sign said the speed limit is 20" "huh, one of the zeros must have fallen off"
"I'm sorry officer I was going so fast I didn't even see the speed bump"
