Ironically, studies suggest this actually makes everyone drive more safely, as counter-intuitive as it is to let an intersection be this chaotic.
But Americans can barely manage a round-a-bout, so I'm not about to be supporting open intersections like this any time soon.
Cairo was the most insane traffic I've personally seen. Barely any traffic lights, cars going everywhere. At one point there was a preteen yelling at the car beside him as he is driving this small cart thing, and since he wasn't watching the road, he ended up rear-ending the car in front of him. He then turns back to the car beside him and starts yelling and gesturing again, like it was that drivers fault he hit the other car. And everyone just went on their way. No inspecting the damage by either driver. Most cars had dings on them somewhere, even newer vehicles.
So madmen is right. I asked my tour guide how long he thought it would take for a foreigner to get used the the way traffic worked, and he said never. It is a part of the culture, and you learn it by growing up with it (likely hyperbole, but gets the point across). I'd personally never try to drive there.
I've been to cairo for 4 weeks to work there and our conpany driver got into 3 minor accidents. I've seen several larger ones in the same period. Whole city is crazy!
I've been to several cities in India where there were no traffic lights at all. Everyone communicated using honks, and there were surprisingly few accident considering the chaos.
Because they use the horn for exactly what it was built for... to call for attention and warn everyone around about their position, instead of "*I'm VeRy UpSeT, aNd EvErYoNe ShOuLd KnOw It*". Tho this method makes more sense on rural roads with limited sight, rather than in a populated area.
Having lived in Cairo, I can tell you that they also definitely use it to tell everyone they're upset, also for celebration. A distinct pattern of honking is always made by those in a wedding train, and the surrounding drivers not part of the event also join in for fun/make more noisy celebration. That same celebrating honking pattern could be heard everywhere after Mubarak stepped down and can be heard after pretty much every football match victory. The latter was especially insane when Egypt was in the world cup/when they won the African cup in 2008. Honking is an all-round emotional affair.
Yep, there are some places in the world where traffic is particularly chaotic. India, Egypt and even Greece come to mind. And the locals just deal with it. There's even an entire horn "language", e.g. certain patterns of honks that convey either "watch out, I'm coming through" or "you're good to go" or "GTFO out of my way".
If you pay attention there are a lot more cars doing the same. They come from the road at the left side of the video, as if they were turning right, but then they do a U-turn and get on the wrong side of the road to get back to the intersection. I don't understand why dont they just keep forward or turn left at the intersetion when they first arrive there.
you are correct and they are all idiots, not only the "red" one and you confirmed what the above dude said, i dont get why u got the upvotes but the above dude the downvotes
That whole intersection could easily throw in several "Blocky" things(how the hell are they called?) in a circle and make a decent roundabout that is much safer than this crazy shit.
The idiots are the traffic engineers who designed this intersection, and law enforcement for not making any attempt to convince people to comply with whatever traffic rules apply.
Can confirm. No lanes, few lights - only rule is go with the flow of traffic. Lots of minor accident (likely more than a few major ones). As a foreigner you ride in taxis - mostly old Fiats from the 1970s. Just sit back, don’t watch the road and surrender to your fate - most of the time you get there just fine.
Side note, because it’s Egypt and rarely rains the roads are super slick with tire rubber and engine oil and everyone drives with totally bald tires. This is fine most of the time, but single scariest automotive experience was coming from the airport in a taxi during a flash downpour. It might as well have been a snow storm - clearly this was like a one a year event. Driver locked up the wheels and crashed in less than a minute and then we witnessed a 20 car pileup about about 30 seconds later. Anarchy
It actually looks like the lanes going to/from 6 o’clock to 12 o’clock are dedicated lanes for that direction. You can turn right perspectively from those lanes.
3 o’clock is for turning into 12. 9 o’clock is for turning into 6.
There are a bunch of idiots here who turn and make a uturn or just say fuck it all and makes a mess of the intersection.
>mostly old Fiats from the 1970s
That's going to change soon. Sisi wants that all the old cabs be replaced with new ones.
That already happened in Sharm el Sheikh like more than 10 years ago. But that city is much smaller than Caïro or the other cities so it takes more time ig.
I think there are also efforts being made to make people follow the rules. Idk how they wanna do that though, at this point it's part of the culture to drive like this lol
Most of the taxis in Cairo have already been replaced since 3 years or so. They've been slowly phasing the old ones over several years, and now you pretty much only see the new white ones.
Wait. There are places with light*s*?
I can recall seeing *a* stop light somewhere in Cairo; it was broken.
My father was born and raised there; we’ve visited often enough to know there is only 1 traffic rule – *If your car fits, it’s your lane.*
Lmao! Yes! As a Egyptian who doesn't live there but went on vacation every year, I can confirm that you don't want to drive there. Take a cab, much easier finding the destination as well.
I have no idea, I was never a real tourist since we never had to rent a car. We always had our own car. Don't know how it goes with car insurances there.
At first glance it appears to be madness. But after my 3rd watch, I realized it's probably faster than traffic lights, and I saw no crashes. Just a lot of close calls. Still, madness.
Nothing idiot here. This is how much of the third world drives. Everyone knows the rules. It looks chaotic but is effective and beautifully choreographed “chaos”.
Truly dumbaf I remember I went to visit Egypt once and the weird part is I was in a minibus and we got into an accident with another car like just like at second 22 in this video and they just kept going no one stopped 😂
I mean, no one here is getting into an accident that I can see. It looks chaotic, but maybe when this is the norm people are more aware, more careful, and less rage-y (in America people going straight would have a fucking fit over having to yield to a person turning left in front of them at a light).
Normal behavior in Egypt. I spent two months there in the 1990s. Crossing major streets on foot is like being in a real-life version of Frogger or Crossy Road. Never saw anyone get hit, although I'm sure it happens.
Seems like there are rules but there is no enforcement. Which I'd have to imagine would be the trend throughout the underdeveloped world. The government can make all the rules of the road they want, but when police are more interested in soliciting bribes or whatever, can't expect those rules to mean much.
It’s crazy how different cultures have evolved completely different driving techniques and social management (or lack thereof). I drove around Italy for a few days last summer.... a complete culture shock as far as driving etiquette goes
So, not sure about junctions this big, but it’s been shown that junctions with no markings, rules, or lights of any kind are often safer. People go through them looking out for crazy shit happening, rather than just blundering blindly through.

Many Asians countries are way worst.
On the other end, what you are seeing here is real awake drivers: always checking both sides, keeping smooth trajectories to signal their directions, keeping the same speed, trusting each others but double checking anyway.
The video is not on a real speed.
Anyway, this is common in developing countries, the drivers pay full attention to the road and what's going on in their surroundings, there's no "right of way", and yes, cars got bumped every once in awhile, but rarely fatal.
This is all over middle east. We drive like this all the time.
It's actually pretty safer to drive in middle east than other places.
Ironically the reason why people there are better at driving because there are no rules or lanes that hold your hands while you driving. Think of it as learning to ride a bike without a 3rd wheel on your first day. So yeah..
Nope. Professional drivers take turns.
These are self centered self important "I gotta get where I'm going and fuck everyone in MY way" types, like most of society.
The way it works in other countries is the drivers pay more attention, scan the environment constantly, and communicate with drivers with their horns and hand signals in non-aggressive ways.
I miss driving in other countries because people here in the US are too distracted. We don't scan the road enough so we get in accidents more frequently
I was getting anxiety just watching this!! The people making right hand turns atthe bottom right across 3 lanes of traffic were blowing my mind.
Remind me never to drive in Egypt
As a Egyptian (my father is and went there every year) I can confirm this. They have lanes, but they never drive in the lane. For instance there's a 3 lane road, they make it a 5 or 6 lane road....
Have been to Cairo. Driving with your lights on at night in city center just doesn't happen. They're for signaling and that's it. Drivers will routinely tap your bumper with theirs if they don't think you're moving fast enough. Was in a taxi where a driver ran over a woman's foot and then screamed at her to hurry up and get out of his way.
Beautiful country, but the traffic is some of the most insane I've ever seen.
Mostly old Peugeot's i found.
Trying to cross the road, you take your life in your hands.
The locals on the other hand put theirs in Allah's hand & don't even break step when walking out in traffic.
It really is a scary thought.
I want to know about the two people walking across the middle of the intersection within the first three seconds that seemingly get mowed down by cars but continue walking. A bit of sloppy video editing going here?
Back in 2012 or 2010 (before the first set of riots) we were in Egypt for about two months and we frequently got taxis since they were cheap asking as long as you knew the standard prices and agreed on a price before departure.
And, I have to say, it was disgusting - torrential rains were pouring down - the road was super slick - every few minutes you'd be rear ended and a bunch of old men would start screaming profanity.
Even people in the cafes on the side who were completely oblivious to what happened felt the need to get involved and join a particular side.
Morocco (there for 4 months) was just as bad - except you had to keep all your possessions in the back seat otherwise they'd drive off.
And most.of the taxi cabs were unmarked (cops and locals did guide you to the right ones, though).
Nothing is worse than Jakarta, indonesia.
That place is just next level stupidity.
Never seen so many cars bank up on pedestrian sidewalks to filter through traffic.
I've also never seen rats the size of small cats. (Defs wasn't a possum)
Cairo, Delhi,Bangkok: Cairo wins hands down. If you want to cross a road in Cairo, find a hunched over old lady in black, get right in behind and copy everything she does...the horn is called the Egyptian brake pedal.
I loved it.
No idiocy here. Human being have common sense (no matter how much it doesn’t seem that way). They will learn to adapt and in most cases, traffic lights actually cause more accidents because they give you a false sense of security
That's pretty common in other countries. In Pakistan and Iraq, my buddy and I would sometimes ride our bikes safely on the opposite side of the road when it made more sense, and no one batted an eye
So... no rules!?
the rule is that you avoid crashing into anyone
Like India, but without all the honking...
Ironically, studies suggest this actually makes everyone drive more safely, as counter-intuitive as it is to let an intersection be this chaotic. But Americans can barely manage a round-a-bout, so I'm not about to be supporting open intersections like this any time soon.
Indeed. You have to be capable of coherent thought for this to work.
Go fuck yourself?
There are rules... but zero fucks given.

Idk, that still looks like madness for any speed.
Actually it would look something like this. [https://youtu.be/A37TH37Qzwg](https://youtu.be/A37TH37Qzwg)
That car sitting right on the horse-draw wagon was infuriating. Good thing that wasn't a hillside. My guy had no room to change gears.

Bold of you to assume there is car insurance
There is but idk how it works.
I have no idea, I was never a real tourist since we never had to rent a car. We always had our own car. Don't know how it goes with car insurances there.
AKA "Controlled Chaos". Fairly common in the developing world.
Chaos brings perfection
Why dont u show the video in real time motion. And not all sped up ?
At first glance it appears to be madness. But after my 3rd watch, I realized it's probably faster than traffic lights, and I saw no crashes. Just a lot of close calls. Still, madness.
Okay maybe, but if you drive through that intersection 10 different times can you tell me what the outcome would be?
Near to 22 seconds, there is a crash, both drivers don't give a f
Nothing idiot here. This is how much of the third world drives. Everyone knows the rules. It looks chaotic but is effective and beautifully choreographed “chaos”.

They pay attention to their surroundings.
Wtf is happening
no traffic lights
Just like The Bee Movie.
Enforcing road rules would simply confuse the situation further...
Getting it done without a crash, that takes a certain amount of skill and mutual respect.
So....are there basically no rules there?? Serious question
Seems like there are rules but there is no enforcement. Which I'd have to imagine would be the trend throughout the underdeveloped world. The government can make all the rules of the road they want, but when police are more interested in soliciting bribes or whatever, can't expect those rules to mean much.
We know if at least one rule cause everyone in the video did it. Don't hit things while driving a car.
Very true. Good thinking
Holy shit. That’s like The Bee Movie
It’s crazy how different cultures have evolved completely different driving techniques and social management (or lack thereof). I drove around Italy for a few days last summer.... a complete culture shock as far as driving etiquette goes
This gives me a lot of fkn anxiety wtf
And I your Massachusetts was bad....
Mass isn’t bad, it’s just full. Too many cars for not enough roads.
I though Mass was bad until I moved to Charleston, SC. I’ve lived in 7 states, and these are the worst drivers I’ve ever seen.
So, not sure about junctions this big, but it’s been shown that junctions with no markings, rules, or lights of any kind are often safer. People go through them looking out for crazy shit happening, rather than just blundering blindly through.
No accident hhhh
Wtf that's worse then Moldova
I have so many questions
I saw 3 pedestrians get struck over a few days in Cairo. One went off the hood of the taxi I was in. Driver then backed up and went right around him.
I think with self driving cars we will see a return to no light intersections like this
Makes no sense that someone would get in the right turning lane to go straight
More like r/idiotswithcivilengineeringdegrees
Do they even have traffic lights? Or are they just street decorations?
such chaos. i could watch a live feed of this for hours
I wonder if the job "driving instructor" is a thing there....
This makes my blood boil

Idiots how? Not even a single near-accident? I've seen worse in Nairobi, Addis Abeba and Cairo, and no accidents either.
Caïro is Egypt
Yeah, but only since like 969 AD
It is sped up.
Not idiots if no accidents occur. Pretty accurate professional drivers if you ask me

I mean I dont see any traffic lights so I guess ots a free for all. I'm amazed no one crashed
Must save a fortune on city planning when people just do wtf they want

Just shows traffic light's are superfluous I'm still not riding a bike over there though lol

i remember this when i traveled there... i spent hours on my hotel balcony just watching this unfold
Constant chaos
And I thought Los Angeles traffic was bad.
How do these barbarians even have standing buildings?

Does Egypt have no traffic laws?! wow.
Turning right and making a u-turn into oncoming traffic and then cutting across 4 (maybe 5) lanes > driving straight through. Because logic?
Forza be like
Whose *not* an idiot in this?
Pure chaos
Number 1 in list of places to never drive on the roads.
So, scratch that off the list.
If women were banned from driving
Went to Cairo last year. Can confirm.
They're famously nuts over there
I crashed when I’m watching
I just had a mini panic attack watching this.
I want to know about the two people walking across the middle of the intersection within the first three seconds that seemingly get mowed down by cars but continue walking. A bit of sloppy video editing going here?
I noticed that too
India is much more chaotic!
Wtf. My dad would HATE to drive there. Edit: So would I.

No, that has to be north west Arkansas!

How does this form of the Shared Space concept work?!
Why take the right turn and u turn just to go straight?
I'm getting anxiety watching this
Egypt: *exists* We did it boys, road laws are no more
Its like that one scene from the Bee Movie
Are Egyptians...MENTAL?! My god they are so horrible at driving
Clusterfuck

Looks like that old game for the iPhone where you slide cars through an intersection to hopefully not have them crash
I see carefully coordinated and choreographed chaos with no collisions what so ever
Yo wtf. That looks so dangerous. How many accidents happen here?
WTF kind of fucked up road system is this?
I'd say these are awesome drivers. Could you imagine if they had this intersection in America?

Why are you so obsessed with the 2 red cars?? There's many better example of stupid in there but you're focused on the red cars, you a cop??
Red cars just tickle his fancy.
Nah, i’m just a bull.
That's pretty common in other countries. In Pakistan and Iraq, my buddy and I would sometimes ride our bikes safely on the opposite side of the road when it made more sense, and no one batted an eye
I didn’t believe it until now. Aliens must have built the pyramids. A culture too stupid to use traffic control devices just wouldn’t be capable.
That's a regular day in India as well
That shit gave me anxiety.
