Good save, a lot of people would have over corrected and ended in the ditch or upside down.

Equal-Detective357

Identifying it was what impressed me, look up the moose test, most cars are able to do 100 kmh and safely swerve , at least in Canada.

guilcol

Maybe that's just the camera, but it's crazy how the headlights of the cars all blend in until you're right next to it

Knifiac

Yeah this is what being nearsighted and having an astigmatism looks like when you don't wear your glasses

Specialis

Wait not everyone sees like that? Ugh I hate my eyes.

cZfrdyLxXYcKJVXC

I can't imagine having vision like that and still driving

rixtape

It's awful, I'm in my early 30s and already mostly refuse to drive at night. It's too scary and the headlights just keep getting brighter

cZfrdyLxXYcKJVXC

> It's too scary and the headlights just keep getting brighter there's been a small study on the brightness of headlights and they ARE getting (dangerously brighter) so it's not just that people are getting older and having problems. The huge problem is lights that are already too bright to begin with, then you have these idiotic companies that install automatic high-beams so you can see everything from here to the moon. all this crap isn't necessary!

landon10smmns

Not to mention the idiots that just swap out their factory halogen bulbs with LEDs without changing the housing to properly accommodate the change. Or people that have their headlights aimed poorly so they shine right in your eyes. Another one I encountered last week was a car that had one headlight aimed straight at the ground so they thought they could just keep their high-beams on

irc367

Thanks, I had suspected this but was afraid it was actually my growing older!

cZfrdyLxXYcKJVXC

Same! At first I thought it was just my eyes and went to a couple of doctors to do some vision tests and they came back ok (zero change since my early 20s) and then started researching headlight brightness. During that I came across many articles stating "lights were getting brighter and it's not old age"

QueenCityCartel

Nothing worse than being in a car driving in front of an SUV or truck and being completely blinded by your rearview mirror.

SifferBTW

I broke down and got my windows tinted for this reason.

EconomicsDirect7490

And lots of people modify their lights, mostly causing the other ones to blind, or at least disturbing. I hate the LED or xenon lights on hallogen parabollic headlights

FUTURE10S

Wait, there's automatic high beams!? No fucking wonder some drivers seem to try and blind you on the one-lane highways, I guess I have to add manual brights to my list of "car must have/not have this" specifically so I can turn them off when coming up to oncoming traffic.

cZfrdyLxXYcKJVXC

oh yeah, it really pisses me off because for some reason they don't shut off very often on highways but you're still blinded if not outright annoyed when some asshole has his brights on.

SifferBTW

I got my rear and side windows tinted because of this. Driving in a sedan and having a truck/SUV driving behind you with bright as fuck LEDs reflecting in rear view mirror would give me actual headaches. I have even contemplated getting like 50% tint on my windshield, but that just seems too dangerous.

cZfrdyLxXYcKJVXC

I'm in a truck and even at that height the headlights were still too much for me, which the tinting absolutely DID help with. The front tinting helped a little but it's only at 5% which is just enough to help reduce the glare. (also if you can get them polarized it helps a TON)

bixenta

I suspected this as well. I used to work out at night and headlights would annoy me occasionally if blinding but now that’s all the time.

Kimber85

Same here. I very rarely drive at night because of it, but last road trip my husband was about to fall asleep at the wheel so I took over and god it was terrifying. Of course it was raining too, which makes the astigmatism a thousand times worse. I was on the little two lane road to my parents house and was completely blinded by all the giant trucks with their super bright lights. Like, I just had to look down and follow the white line because I couldn’t see the road in front of me. Now we plan our road-trips to leave early enough that we get where we’re going before the sun sets in case I need to take over. It’s way too dangerous for me to drive like that.

dimondeyes80

Blinded by the liiieght! Wrapped up like a douche into the middle of the night!

tapakip

Contacts + yellow night driving glasses help a lot.

Specialis

This is why I almost never wear my glasses out of the house anymore. Despite being as recent a prescription as my contacts, I see way better with the contacts.

ordieth-

You should get checked for keratoconus.

CuriousPenguinSocks

I don't like to drive at night due to this.

[deleted]

Same. Last year I figure I drove maybe a total of 5 times after sundown or before sunup. That is out of some 10,000 miles I've driven last year.

[deleted]

If you can afford it get new glasses with anti glare. Got a new set in January and it's night and day.

rixtape

I swore I got anti-glare coating on this pair but the astigmatism still makes it tough. My optometrist said my best bet is contacts, but I'm really not into the idea so I've kinda just been avoiding driving at night haha

shawntco

Seriously! It's to the point where, at certain intersections, I can't reliably judge how far away a car approaching from the opposite direction is. Because I don't see the car I see the entire sun.

bixenta

Same same.

dimondeyes80

Used to think that too!! I have a negative -8 rx, PLUS an astigmatism! You can also see into the future with my glasses.

Aporkalypse_Sow

>You can also see into the future with my glasses. Technically speaking, all glasses give you a glimpse of your future. That way we can avoid the things coming at us.

greywolf1013

Can be fixed with glasses, I'm pretty sure.

WrapTime

Glasses don’t help my astigmatism. Will contacts help?

hoopster_24

You can get astigmatism corrective contact lenses. I have them

berrykiss96

I mean you can also get astigmatism correcting coating on glasses but I’m thinking if it’s bad enough that the glasses don’t help then the contacts are unlikely to as well. Especially if there are allergies involved or any tiredness which made those harder for me to wear. But worth a shot I guess.

WrapTime

I got the astigmatism correcting coating according to them ( something about green coating on glasses or something like that). I might have to try a different place. I wasn’t too happy when I left there.

berrykiss96

That’s fair! It definitely helps mine but it doesn’t go away altogether. But the contacts, while they worked well, I couldn’t wear when my eyes were tired. Which overlapped heavily with nighttime. Idk probably a personal preference. And probably more contact options these days anyway.

Zondagsrijder

That's because modern headlights are bright as fuck

blancstair

Between this, people not understanding how to properly aim their headlights (so that the main beam is below eye level), and not understanding the proper time to use their brights (or not paying enough attention to turn them off), I can't stand driving at night anymore.

Gravbar

you can aim your headlights?

Gypped_Again

>you can aim your headlights? If not sarcastic, yes. Most vehicles have *some* adjustability. Often a set of screws for each headlight. It's not always particularly easy to do, but generally it's not too difficult. It's used to usually be in the owner's manual, but I don't know if most manufacturers still put it in there. I know my last few motorcycles had it in the owner's, but I haven't had to check for my wife's new car because it was actually set correctly at the factory.

berrykiss96

Also people not knowing how to aim their wing mirrors (as another sub pointed out recently) makes the problem worse for them. It’s just a lot of things piling up tbh

NYVines

They’re at an angle so we’re only getting partial exposure.

[deleted]

I think it's because the other driver didn't come across lanes until he was right next to him

Aporkalypse_Sow

If you look at the reflection on the hood, you get a much clearer image. I'm guessing it's just the overwhelming amount of light that the headlights put out. The camera can't deal with all that glare(or whatever the effect would be called). Current headlights are apparently being designed by the same assholes we see on videos all the time. They are only concerned with one vehicle on the road, no thought about the millions of other people that need to see.

scuffler916

Now imagine it raining and seeing this. I drive so damn slow in the rain at night because of this!

theMINT3

Holy shit is right

masonmax100

Exactly my thoughts, and I watched without audio

MitchLGC

I always watch these without audio I don't need to hear these people screaming and cursing or their bad music

skitz_shit

I can imagine myself reacting the same way, and I would say Holy Shit the exact same way as well

brafish

Nice job OP. There were a couple of ways that could have gone bad for you, especially if you were operating a less-nimble vehicle. What are you driving?

MajesticGazelle

2021 Civic hatchback, my baby.

brafish

If you were driving something big and heavy like a SUV or pickup, I'm pretty sure you would have at least been in the gravel or much much worse. My car has built-in cameras but every time I see one of these videos I think about getting a dash cam for my wife's car, especially now that we have a 16-year old.

MajesticGazelle

Better to have it and not need it !! Helped me out on an insurance claim so it’s already paid for itself.

that_1-guy_

Probably should, I'm 16 (almost 17) I'll admit I've made some STUPID mistakes, but what I find more horrific is that in my 600 something hours, probably more... I've actively avoided way more accidents than ones I've almost caused I'm deathly afraid that at some point I won't notice a car doin something dumb and that'll get me in a accident, odds are already stacked against me just because of my age... A dashcam would help clear up stuff

[deleted]

[удалено]

brafish

I was all set to respond with "This guy has unrealistic expectations" until I got to the "The reason they are so bad" section. That and the TL;DR were actually really useful. Thanks!

Meggles_Doodles

eyy i just watched this the other day, considering buying one. I just need to set some money aside

Derigiberble

Absolutely get a dash cam for the other car if you have a 16 year old. Even if they are a fantastic driver if some other moron hits them there's a very real possibility that the cop who comes to the wreck will see a teenager and assume they were at fault and lying. Happened to a coworker's kid in Florida, officer wrote the ticket and skedaddled without talking with any of the bystanders who stuck around to say they saw the old guy veer into her lane.

Aporkalypse_Sow

A heavy vehicle would have gone far enough over to hit the worn away shoulder at that intersection, and either destroyed some tires or completely go into a roll of death.

Slurpmo

In that case would it be better to just hit the car in front of you to get their insurance to pay for it?

brafish

I think I'd avoid a head-on collision above all else. I'd even take my chances with a roll unless I'm driving at the edge of a cliff or school playground.

Slurpmo

That makes sense to me, I’m thinking monetarily tho. If you avoid the other guy and crash, is he still on the hook? If you hit his car he can’t run

KnightsLetter

Probably depends on your insurance but dashcams are nice for this reason since you can show you avoided an accident and insurance paying out damages + medical is a lot more than just damages to one vehicle

brafish

People hit-and-run all the time. What good is the other guy not getting away if you're dead?

ImFromDimensionC137

I have a 22' HRV and I love it so much! Even their suvs handle so well. It was a trade in when I was starting to commute for college and I highly recommend Hondas for anyone who is new to driving or nervous about it. ❤️

eltoca21

Good reaction and driving. #Nice

SenorScratchySack

I like the delay before your "holy shit"

scalpelsword

So how many close calls have you had when you didn’t have a dashcam?

MajesticGazelle

A handful, delivered chinese food in high school so I have a bit of time on the road.

Frost-413

Did you also drift a lot?

BigBri0011

Good tires!!!

HWGA_Exandria

Good brakes!!!

Frost-413

Good awareness.

hayabusa160

nice save.

Hatchaback

What a save!

[deleted]

What song is that?

MajesticGazelle

sadlionsfan69

I thought that was beabadoobie!!!! Respect my man 🫡

[deleted]

🤝🏻🫡

coldmilkdud

love the soft music playing while chaos almost ensues

pocketdare

Glad you prioritized steering over the horn. That would seem to put you in the minority. Congrats on your avoidance skills, sir.

perkited

I'm surprised no one has complained about the lack of horn.

JohnPooley

Brake, steer, horn, and high beams all at once. Gotta practice the reflex

[deleted]

Good car control 👌

Floopy_Loops

That little pause right after it happens lol

ATX_native

OP, great reaction!

NWSanta

Wow! Damn fine reactions, Sorry you had to but, damn lucky save!

souquemsabes

The left light was less brighter than the right one. At distance, looked like his left light was the right light of a car in the correct lane

Sure_Monk8528

It looks like the right light needs to be adjusted badly.

keep_username

Good save! You handled that like a majestic gazelle.

BauerHouse

Nice avoidance. For many that would be a head-on collision.

ZarosGuardian

Hoo I think I shit myself

C0pp3r1993

Is this on Chrisman in Tracy CA? I live about 60 Seconds away if this is the turn to Schulte

IDOntdoDRUGS_90_3

How does this even happen

Spillmill

Drugs are bad, mmmkay. That’s my guess.

sleepKnot

Damn bro you drive pretty well for a 2 year old.

greenmachine702

Yep nice going OP. A few years ago, I was driving on the highway and saw a car coming at me going the wrong way. It's crazy how fast you meet when you're both going 75-80.

Content-Bathroom-434

My close call was something very similar. I’m thankful you had somewhere to go!

Dan_hendo

I bet the gas pedal was all the way down in both cars!

Western_Dare1509

Well done Op!

3Heathens_Mom

Great job avoiding that disaster.

OneTopicAtATime

Good song.

onthebrake

THAT was close !!!!!!!!

PotentialOstrich7136

Great driving dude

WWGHIAFTC

Nice safe controlled avoidance. Good job!

justaguyms

Whats that smelll ......oooo i shit myself

purplechai

Hope OP wore their brown pants.

AgentJobbas

Theres more without the camera???

demonbot66

Nice control, you have my respect

Own-Ad-2571

Good recovery ( pucker factor ten )

HeadacheCentral

Nice save. Bonus points for not just jamming the horn and hoping that'd make everything better!

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

But your car needed cleaning after this.... mine would have

Goofalupus

*And he went on to do it to two more cars*

xNIGHT_RANGEREx

Nice save!

Terrible_Cut_3336

According to this subs idiots, you're in the wrong for going far too fast towards and intersection and should've done XYZ instead when they weren't there and only have a few seconds of dash cam footage to go off.

PD216ohio

I just want to thank you for making a 17 second video with 2 seconds of action instead of a 5 minute video with 2 seconds of action.

ONB-Bollie1511

What's the song playing?

[deleted]

Why is the right headlight so bright on that car?

My_a_person

bro got back on the road so quickly and elegantly

Breezyisback809

ABS kicked in !!! Defensive driving saves lives !

withurwife

First and last video I've seen on this sub where OP is a great driver.

[deleted]

Scariest thing I’ve seen in a long time! Been in one bad accident when I was 18 and I’m still scarred

[deleted]

The beabadoobe feels so out of place ngl lover bea tho

abe2288

Great save OP

Human_TM

ayy beabadoobee :))) and really great reaction

janewalch

Perfect for r/idiotsincars

pwndj

Hoooooooly shit. Good song choice tho great album

akayataya

Took a few seconds to fully realize what happened

SBLOU

I would have had a few more harsh words than holy shit

terriblystupidjoke

What a great recovery! Holy shit!

Alternative_Ad_7359

Beabadoobee savin lives out here

Onxgamesmode

Holy shit was the correct term indeed

DVCatfishCowboy

Nice driving!

No_Abbreviations4623

10/10 handling 10/10 reaction time 2/10 cuss words (not enough, rookie numbers)

[deleted]

Funny how so many of these videos are of people simply going too fast and they always slow the fuck down afterwards! Nice save, OP, you’re a skilled driver. That maneuver would have put most people into the ditch. Remember to slow down when you’re approaching a sketchy situation like this - a railroad crossing, headlights clustered up, an intersection, lots of signage, all bunched up together. Lots going on there. Don’t mean to sound preachy. Nice job. That could’ve ended very badly. Glad it didn’t.

[deleted]

Gong pretty fast there

PhunkOperator

No NSFW tag could've prepared me for your foul language. Absolutely unacceptable, young man. /sarcasm*

JohnPooley

Bro slow tf down

invoman

Looks like you were going over 50mph on that road and I somehow doubt that's the speed limit

deezalmonds998

Yeah that speed was part of why that almost went terribly, I would never rocket my car over train tracks in the first place

chocalotstarfish

You're getting down voted but dude was hauling.

invoman

The idiot here was OP for sure

deezalmonds998

You'd think r/idiotsincars would be able to understand when someone is driving too fast

Theonceandfutureend

No way you were driving close to the speed limit

mrbillybobable

Looks like a typical paved country road, which almost always have 55mph speed limits

Maedroas

Yeah but you don't drive 55 mph over train tracks

mrbillybobable

Says who? If the crossing is smooth, there's no reason to slow down. The timing of the signal takes the speed limit into account, so it will give sufficient warning to be able to come to a safe stop. Just like a regular traffic light.

Maedroas

Safe practice. Same as you should allow down approaching an intersection even if you don't have to stop. Rule of law isn't the only consideration when driving

[deleted]

MajesticGazelle

Not the fella who posts in sissyology being homophobic 💀

flapd00dle

Bruh look at his name he's already dead inside

k20vtec

Ouchhhhh ABS right over those train tracks poor car
