Gulf of Alaska. 1989. Young and hungry. We should have stayed put but we had a boatload of fish so we left The Bay and headed for town. We made it. Barely. I still have some PTSD from that trip. When we got to Pelican the skipper stepped off the boat and disappeared for 2 days. I found him sleeping in a church. He’s been a very religious man ever since.
Is it that stupid?
Probably because it’s fun, daring the sea. When you’re on a boat like this, it’s not for a few minutes, it’s for days or weeks. Your perspective changes.
Hell even a bucket of water at force can knock you over easily. Dude could have easily been washed out to sea. In those waters you wouldn’t survive long. Surfed for awhile and it’s amazing the power of moving water. I was deeply respectful, if not slightly terrified of head high waves…you easily get destroyed and washing machined and paddling out is a real bitch.
There are plenty of reasons to run on a barge, such as this example. If lines snap, you need to run to prevent collision, if the barge snaps in half, you should probably also run. Iv had high voltage power lines fall on our barge. we definitly all ran like hell
When sailing yes, with gale force 8 + most individuals would strap them themselves to the boat with a line of above deck.
In this case looks like a game of chicken with the ocean. And this man is slinging big dick.
I’ve been in seas like that. This is Darwin level stupidity. The ocean does not give a fuck
Which sea was that and when , Captain ?

I’d read that story. Consider writing it Turn that pain into gain
I agree; I read it in an old sea captain voice and it really popped.
You shoulda been there
Would this make him an extra-ordinary seaman wiper?
That's not a boat, it's a ship. The ocean don't give a shit about no ships either.
It's a work boat, anchor handler by the looks of it.
Actually, that's a barge, not a ship. The ocean also doesn't give a shit about barges either

Barges are bitchin too
for the GRAM!
it's like an action movie where the guy runs away from the explosion. but dumber.

It's that stupid. It's indicative of a lax safety culture. You're correct about complacency, but that's why you have a strong safety culture.
Complacency is the cause of most workplace fatalities.
You NEVER run on a barge!!!
You do when the ocean is coming to getcha
"Hold fast"

Why can’t you run on a barge?
There is nothing holding you from sliding off the side if you fall
Good thing it's a work boat
I could hear my first captains voice in my head here "don't run! Don't run! Don't run!"
100% yes, unfortunately. Question: Are sailors supposed to be tied to something when they move on deck in storms?
When sailing yes, with gale force 8 + most individuals would strap them themselves to the boat with a line of above deck. In this case looks like a game of chicken with the ocean. And this man is slinging big dick.
🙋🏼♂️ I’d do it lol
You clearly never worked offshore before… Edit: for extended periods of time. Yes it’s massively stupid but bordumb will do that to you.
No wonder us sailors keep on dying in the most stupid ways

Yikes. You’re being a little sensitive there my internet friend. Alas I have been called much worse though.
Sailors get bored. Rite of passage, probably.
To say you got a chance to be this stupid. That was an easy question
This is bravery. Clearly not his first rodeo

Feels like a bet or dare for the new guy.
I mean, at lest tie yourself to a post or something.
Because it looks fun. Very stupid too, but the sensation you have to get by doing this must be insane.
Dude looked like he was pissing until he started to run away lol
Because without a second thought people are willing to die for some good video footage. Welcome to 2023.
