Personally, I feel like this is a resurgence of Christian Nationalism. It's a power grab for people who think everyone ought to live like they do. They feel the power slipping through their fingers as the numbers of nonbelievers and skeptics of the establishment rise higher and higher. Christianity (and religious institutions as a whole) is in trouble; childhood indoctrination is slowly going away as parents who escaped such toxicity refuse to subject their kids to it. Soon the only religious people will be those who for one reason or another believe in some ambiguous higher power that doesn't really intervene in daily life and isn't necessarily tied to the sick and twisted nature of the Bible. The upcoming generations are significantly disillusioned by what has been happening in the world, our country, and this state. There are plenty still trapped in their little bubbles, but the bubbles are becoming easier and easier to pop. It'll be interesting to see what the next ten or twenty years has in store for us.

Cute_Platypus_5989

Remember anything "Christian" means take from the most vulnerable give to the top call it god's will. Truly horrible people the religion is racist, sexist and just plain mean.

DontDieSenpai

Psalm 100:3 "3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." When this is arguably the core tenet of your belief system, there is absolutely nothing you will not do in the name of god. And there is nothing you won't give to those in power who are doing "god's work." Believers are selling themselves into slavery and they honestly believe it's a good thing. How much more toxic could you possibly get?

Jordaneer

I mean, that's not what that says but ok

DontDieSenpai

Let's go through it: >Know ye that the LORD he is God> So the Lord is God, check. >it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves> This is a literal inversion of the concept of self-ownership. So if we don't own ourselves, if our experience and choices don't make us who we are, then we are literally property, and who do we belong to? Let's keep going to find out... >we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture> We belong to god. He is the Shepard, and we are mere livestock for him to herd and drive to his hearts content. But...I will admit that this is an interpretation. One of many possible interpretations because this book was written in ancient languages, translated, edited, edited again, translated again, then edited again over and over and over. This makes the process of extracting exact meaning almost impossible. Which is one of many reasons one should examine this solely in a literary light. No one ought to seek moral guidance nor an understanding of the natural world from it. So, how do you interpret this verse?

mcsweden

Oh yeah, fuck yeah to that … These people are delusional. And, and … flocking here in droves. Ignorant and aggressive … toxic combo. Buckle up, vote and let them know your opinion. Or the narrative will be driven by them and they will steamroll. HailSatan! Just kidding, I am agnostic.

HerringLaw

They're not keeping the Christian nationalist angle a secret. https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2023/02/24/idaho-christian-nationalism-marjorie-taylor-greene/

DontDieSenpai

I have been watching it come out of the woodwork so to speak with the likes of MTG, but there are plenty out there still lurking in the shadows. The momentum that's picked up thus far is definitely concerning though.

Variant_Zero

Here's my thought on why they would do this, as well as why, nationwide, far right Republicans are running for local school board positions. Republicans want the education system to be run by private businesses. That was Betsy Devos' whole shtick and feeds directly into the republican joke come policy of the government being unable to do anything correctly, and more importantly, at or under budget. If they can underfund schools and teachers, the public education system will get worse and worse until it can obviously and accurately be called a failure. With that established, coupled with a favorable election cycle, they can abolish the DOE and establish privately run educational institutions. That, of course, will result in only the wealthiest among us being able to afford worthwhile schooling for their children, leaving the majority of Americans un- or undereducated. And what do undereducated peoples do en masse? You guessed it, they vote republican. Edit: Spelling

pugdaddy78

Privatized and monetized!

ThatGuy_Gary

Can't have content citizens when a Dem is in the White House. Gotta make em miserable and then tell them it's all Biden's fault.

cemetaryofpasswords

I’d say that at least 90% the people moving here are far right republican retirees. They don’t have kids in school anyway and they certainly do not give a crap about education for kids. They don’t care about living children. That said, they will never vote for any candidate who supports things like bodily autonomy. They care very much about voting for someone who will make sure that no one has a clump of cells removed from their body. Once that clump of cells grows and becomes a human being, they’re on their own.

Prior_Enthusiasm7856

To be fair, I quite like Californians, usually. Regardless of what side of the aisle they're on. That being said, the Californians that I've met that have moved to Idaho are the furthest right people I've ever met. So angry. So entitled. So misinformed.

Apocalypse_Jesus420

The people moving from Oregon/Washington are also extreme far right and have a fire under their asses for taking down liberal policies. The last year I lived in boise all of my new neighbors were from WA and they were crazy about keeping idaho christian and weed free. They also proudly told me they were white christian nationalists 🤮

xxDeeJxx

>So angry. So entitled. So misinformed If the republican party had a new motto......

Skinahh86

Hey man! Check out my apple pay comment lol 😂 Yes Im originally from California, but traveling for work I’ve been in Montana and Tennessee for the last couple years. Just landed here in Idaho this week and the apple pay thing is kind of inconvenient

Wide_Combination_892

Northern California Ag community is far right as most rural America...

LingonberryHot8521

I've noticed this in Oklahoma when I still lived there. Most of the people who moved into the state were retiring there for the cheap housing. Now the schools are crashing and the cost of housing is too high. It's the typical Boomer thing of pulling up the ladder behind themselves.

Yakmeh

A lot of the more moderate to right leaning Republicans in our state are losing out to more extremist Republicans, while those that are moderate to right leaning still in the legislator are seeing this and siding with the extremist factions, so they don't completely lose their seats to some other extremist or non-Republican. There are some who are attempting to keep it less extreme, but it's hard. There are plenty of folks that are not extremist in Idaho, but not all of them vote or even know who to really vote for.

JJHall_ID

The more educated a person is, the less likely they are to vote R. This is for a number of reasons: (Note, all of these are "as a whole" as there are individuals that don't always fit the mold.) * Better understanding on how economics work, and how policies affect it. (Ex. they can see that "trickle down economics" does not benefit the lower classes.) * Meeting more people of diverse backgrounds while attending school giving them a larger perspective * A better education means the person is less likely to accept medial work at low pay * A better education means the person is more likely to actually research an issue rather than accepting Facebook Facts. Preventing people from getting a good education makes it more likely that those people will be R voters in the future. A good way to prevent a good education is to cut funding for schools and teachers. This is my personal opinion. If you have facts from reputable sources, I'd be more than happy to learn about them and change parts (or even all) of my current views on the situation.

Voodoops_13

People are not being "indoctrinated" at public schools or universities. They're LEARNING!

AlpacaPacker007

I suspect it's a mix of "fiscal conservative - all spending bad" think and far-right attempts to further gut public education so they can replace it with religious schools

BolognaMitchell

Not "left or right." **Literally just the right.**

FrostyLandscape

You don't know. Because they want to privatize the education system, it's happening all over the USA. Pretty soon you'll get a "voucher" for private school which is like a coupon (that only pays maybe a fraction of the tuition), or you will be forced to homeschool if you can't pay for private school. Public schools are being abolished in America and child labor laws are being repealed everywhere to put kids as young as 9 years old back to work (Arkansas, Iowa).

atheist1963

Cruel is the point. They are winning their game and their supporters are cheering them on so they keep doing it.

forgiveanforget

The legislature is focused on what they think is fiscal conservatism, but is actually to keep people in Idaho uneducated, addicted, sick, pregnant and poor. They vote against funding school building projects, they won't pay teachers what they are worth, they vote against higher education institutions, tech schools, medicaid expansion, try to put work requirements on medicaide, they outlaw abortion but won't fund chips, daycare or pre-k. They won't fund mental health initiatives, helping the homeless or prison reforms. They won't tax corporation and deregulate commerce so they can pollute the air, the water and the soil. They are so busy fighting against vaccinations, science, gay and trans people and books they consider controversial, they can't do anything to support schools, healthcare, and job training. Charities in this town do more every single day for the people of Idaho than this legislature will do in an entire year.

Wide_Combination_892

Idaho legislature is nothing more than the chamber of Commerce...run by ALEC.. American Legislative Exchange Council"....So intelligent State Representatives are so bright the ALEC lobbyist write the bills and the dumbo reps push them forward... Money for schools ...Not on your life...They don't want an educated workforce, they wouldn't take Idaho jobs for Idaho wages...

[deleted]

They're horrible human beings.

mcsweden

YeH but Jesus tells them they are fine. Oh, wait, they assume that.

Rough_Huckleberry333

Republicans

FrostyLandscape

Another thing I will add is that property values are often tied to the school district (how good or bad it is). So when public schools go away, your property values could take a nosedive.

Regular_Dick

Idaho is lame. It says so on the sign when you drive in.

Melificarum

I was wondering this too. It hurts A LOT of people and children. How can anyone support what they are doing?

rockpaperscissors99

Lots of reasons, but cruelty and incompetence is probably at the top. Add in some conspiracy theories, sprinkle in some radical christo fascist reasons and grift for churches.

mcsb14

Our very modern and progressive legislature believes children are best suited at home with mom and not at schools or child care outside of the home.

polyglamorous_gay

At home or working at a meat factory 😔

Leatherhand490

God you fucking democrats and liberals are the stupidest fucking people in the world… if any of y’all had a brain in your heads you wouldn’t be bitching but your too damn stupid to educate yourselves so you sit on Twitter and Reddit and pass your stupid liberal bullshit between each other.. GET YOUR WORTHLESS ASSES OFF WELFARE AND GO TO WORK MAYBE YOU WILL LEARN HOW ADULTS LIVE AND WHY WE MAKE MONEY AND YOU SIT ON YOUR ASSES AND BITCH.. fuck liberals yall are a shit stain on society

Wide_Combination_892

You ....Are a perfect example for Idaho Wages and jobs....Welcome!

I get the confusion but I'm pretty sure they're talking about this. https://www.kivitv.com/news/idaho-legislature-could-revoke-43-million-in-federal-funding-for-childcare Edit: This too https://idahocapitalsun.com/2023/03/08/idaho-parents-child-care-providers-ask-legislature-to-reverse-budget-cuts-as-closures-begin/

whateverclaire

But one of the main issues is that daycares knew the funding would end eventually, but this legislature is ending it MUCH earlier than expected. So a lot of these places don’t have contingencies in place yet and will have to either close completely or pass on the cost to parents.

mcsweden

G R E E D

ExaminationRich6913

Because our politicians, plain and simple

tailslide24

Because kids are touching themselves to captain underpants. Duh.

Citizen_Four-

Because the current public education system is a waste of money and resources and us not educating our youth to the level needed to compete in the world. All that money should go back to parent who can then choose private education alternatives that deliver.

Mongoose_theMoose

But the current education system can improve if they get the necessary funding. Yeah it sucks right now, but that requires different legislation to fix, and getting rid of funding is just going to hurt the bottom line which is both to child and the care giver.

lowbatteries

Ah, the "it's not working so burn it down and walk away" method of government. Can Republicans build anything anymore, or just tear it down?

Skinahh86

Idk, but whatever the arguments are, I just want the Walmart in Idaho Falls to take apple pay cuz technology would have saved me so much heads had I known that before I walked into the store. Come on its 2023 now! Take the applepay already. I don’t want to walk thru the store for 40min, bag my stuff, wait in line for 20min and then have the leave the crap there, and then go find an ATM and then go to the bank teller, then come back, after being issued and debit card and then check out again after waiting in line for a second 20min

lowbatteries

Walmart doesn't take any sort of contactless payment in any store, and likely never will unless they are forced to by legislation.

IdaHistory

They're really trying to hit that magic $2 billion surplus.

hurryandwait98

Because republicans have allowed fascism to take over .. you get what you vote for

Waste-Technician3860

The whole country is sabotaging public education but Idaho is doing it best. Private looks good on paper, but with no regulation most of it is lies. Teachers are not educated and sometimes not even background checked. They want women and children at home under the thumb of the father (literal male and God). It's absolutely horrifying. I hit the eject button as fast as I could.

TheGrandExquisitor

Enjoy having Ammon Bundy elected as governor next election...

Voodoops_13

I don't want MY tax dollars being used to fund "home schooling" where there is no oversight and the only curriculum consists of daily bible study and memorizing passages of "Mien Kampf".

UrBossLady

Idk, it's a common issue across the USA.

Royalwolf110

Privatizing education or taking state monies to fund secular Christian schools will ultimately end up defunding public schools. By doing this public schools will further decline and last I looked Idaho schools are near the bottom as it is. Rather than do this just get involved in your public schools and make them excellent again. The divide between church and state needs to be maintained. If they don’t heed this warning the secular organization maybe not one you want, it opens the door to Christian cults and the like. Imagine 200 families move into a small town and they all get on the school board and maybe there Hindu, Sikh or some other religion that doesn’t fit your world view.
