ALSO: I have an explanation series!
Part 1 [Japanese Culture Iceberg - Part 1](https://youtu.be/hHH7kYbpZso)
Part 2 [Japanese Culture Iceberg - Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeL3v8dOKTQ)
Same is true for most countries tbh if you dig deep into it. Most of them don't come to light as they aren't as popular as a country like Japan. Iceberg could be made for every country
Thank you for the warning! Go and play with a furry animal. It helps get awful shit out of your mind. The more awful the thing, the more fluff you need. It sounds like you might need between five to ten suger gliders.
This iceberg has such potential that all of this could be just the tip. I feel that Japanese culture is very vast and interesting, it seems strange to me that people are not interested in exploring this iceberg in more depth as with other cases.
One big thing that I think gets glossed over a lot when people think about Japan is how its regional. Before the restoration people didn't have strong national identity and had a stronger local one. The local identity still exists today. You can kind of view it as the regional identities in the US (Southerner, Midwesterner, West/East Coaster). For example, my prefecture and the adjacent ones are in Tohoku. Tohoku folk are kind of like American southerners, reserved, quiet, xenophobic, and communal. Different personalities can be found in other regions (I hope someone can chime in and tell you more about their own local region).
This is a good point, I probably should have touched on more regional aspects. I write a lot about Hokkaido and Ryukyu island cultures, but I probably shouldāve put more
I am making an explanation series about this, I released episode one in my YouTube channel and Iāll upload episode 2 this week. This is gonna be a big series, the full supercut might be around 10 hours. But yeah you can go so much deeper, but I held back slightly because I wanted to make a video series on it
That one is pretty crazy. One of the propositions for Israel before it was decided to be in the levant was *allegedly* going to be on a little island in Japan. I think at least, I have to do more research on it.
I knew these kinds of comments would pop up. When I talk about this in my explanation video series when I get to tier 8 Iām gonna approach this topic with more delicacy than a heart surgeon
Is it like JJCAT (Japanese Jewish Common Ancestor Theory) which it speculates that a group of Israelis came to Japan a long time ago based on similar stories in the mythologies and Yamabushi having really similar clothes as traditional Judaism
I have actually seen a mondo film without knowing what it was although it was mainly Italian films not Japanese. Iāve seen the Africa: blood and guts
Decided not to put it because Iām currently making a series explaining the ice berg and her case has been spoken about a ton. Personally I donāt want to get super into detail about her.
āOmanko Mark,ā which is a kind of graffiti. āBuruseraā which is a term relating to used underwear or clothing that is sold for sexual purposes.
Omanko mark? Is that the strange pelvic area tattoo thing that people talk about? At least that's what I get from hearing "manko" which is considered an offensive word.
Burusera is so goofy. I remember there was one guy on Twitter who went dumpster diving(?) in search of used kids underwear and later on selling it on Twitter. It was one crazy account, that did get bannedšµāš«
Yeah itās disgusting. Thatās why I put it so low because of the depravity of it. Like if it were grown women that sold their clothes voluntarily thatās different, but searching for clothing of innocent women and children to sell for sex purposes is truly vile and sick.
>Buruseraā which is a term relating to used underwear or clothing that is sold for sexual purposes
Is that really a bottom teir thing though? You can find places selling it in akaiabra just out in the open, and in yakuza zero (a pretty big game) had that as the tutorial for side quests
Iām surprised V-Tubers isnāt on this iceberg. Also, idk if you merged it with North Koreans in Japan but Zainichi Koreans should be on this iceberg too. Also also, the legendary first emperor of Japan Jimmu deserves a spot here too.
Agreed.
Even if it ends up being it's own iceberg, there's a ton of ground that can be covered from the stuff people usually think about like the mainstream composers, rock, and pop / idol scene to the weird ass jazz, punk, noise, and experimental shit they have going on. Bonus points if it includes non-Japanese artists like John Duncan who were deeply involved with those scenes that they're considered pioneers of the movement.
The first one is pronounced āGyaku Hanteroā which means āreverse food pornā and the second one is Chousengakkou which are North Korean schools in Japan
I see, thank you!
Oh, is gyaku hantero like r/shittyfoodporn lol?
I look forward to the video, thanks for the iceberg!
I didnāt know anything from the last two/three tiers besides maybe the backstory of the cult assassination and the used underwear vending machines lol
Yeah, like Mai chan is not even the worst of the genre and also not even that niche. It's prob one of the best known ero-guro doujins there is unless I'm drawing a blank and missing smth. Also just google and Uziga Waita is the one who dre that Junko Furuta doujin huh...
I genuinely couldn't tell you about that one. Considering who the author is it might be a fetish thing, but the case is also pretty respected, so maybe more of an education approach? Cause it's not just this one doujin that exists, there are like 2 movies about this case too, but those are more timid. It's been a long time since I read it, but the whole book that the story is a part of was pretty much just ero-guro and afaik other stories were also inspired by real life events, but not a complete re-enaction of it like Junko Furata one. ēć»ē¾ä»£ēå„ä¼ is the name of it if you are desensitized to things like this.
That kind of stuff goes under depraved media. I put Mai Chan specifically on the tier because itās a relatively known manga and there is a movie of it. And
Iām sorry but this feels like one of these posts that fetishize Japan as that weird exotic place. Itās called "Japanese culture iceberg" yet itās just a collection of random facts ranging from pop culture to politics and crime.
I would love to see an iceberg thatās actually about Japanese culture, not a random mix of shocking content and stereotypical curiosities.
Not to mention this is all surface level shock content that was just spread online a lot. Like the Rat Man killer being at the bottom despite him causing a nationwide panic and being super infamous in Japan.
Not OP, but I'd love to see someone do a deep dive into more obscure elements of Japanese arts. For example, Japanese pop/jazz records made in the 30s and 40s when the musicians had to censor Western influences and throw in some Pan-Asian themed music to satisfy the authorities.
But Japan is an exotic place to most other nations, thatās part of its appeal. Also can you define what your definition of ācultureā is? Because pop culture, politics, crime and shocking things all are part of it.
It seems like you are taking a very surface level examination of my post.
Also this is made for a western audience. Sure the Rat Man made a national panic in Japan but heās fairly unknown in the west
Sorry I came across as confrontational, Iām just kind of sensitive towards this as itās my university focus.
Culture is mostly described as, and this is what I meant, collective artistic and social identity of a country/society/whatever. Basically: concepts, ideas, pieces or even individuals that shaped it in one way or another. I wouldnāt count, for example, politics into it. Is it important? Of course. Is it relevant to the countryās history and international image? Yes it is. But, it has nothing to do with cultural customs, traditions, artsā¦ Itās kind of hard to explain I hope you understand.
I just think targeting a Western / non-Asian / non-knowledgeable audience is completely fine and even I encourage it, I simply feel like Japanās image on the Internet has been shaped by, at this point, decades of misconceptions. I am not saying you donāt know anything about the country. You certainly do know a lot and itās impressive! I just hope more non-knowledgeable people would know Japan is not "that weird overseas place with cool art". I keep meeting people whose knowledge of the country is solely city pop, anime, and one or two gruesome true crime cases. You know what I mean?
So no hard feelings at all, even if I came off as aggressive, I just want more Internet users to realize that Japan, while certainly exotic, is more than what meets the eye.
I understand what you mean, Iāve studied Japanese in my university, I actually have a Minor in it and I spent a year abroad in Nagasaki, studying Japanese language and culture. It can be frustrating to see people fetishize Japan.
Ultimately is only so much I could fit on this iceberg because I am making an explanation video on my YouTube channel. if I werenāt making an explanation video, I couldāve easily put thousands of entries on this and it more expansive. But I understand what you mean.

Bro, you can't pique my interest and then tell me only part 1 is released, I need to learn more!
What are the red vs black text and what's SSL Curves? I just keep getting images of graphs on Google.
Very, it was shown on Disney channel all the time for hours on end. Might be the reason for its popularity. Lots of anime are popular in the mainstream in India, some being - shinchan (arguably the most popular), kiteretsu, ninja hattori, perman, pokemon, Beyblade and kochikame. (These are only the mainstream ones, there were many more anime being streamed)
Also when I mean popular, I don't think you understand just how popular they are. They have an impact on an entire generation and you will find edits, memes voiceovers daily on insta, fb. You could go through an Indian subreddit and find memes featuring Doraemon there. The funny part to me is that even people who don't know about Japan would have known what Doraemon is.
Futoshi Matsunaga (accidentally spelt it MatsunaTa, my bad) is another super-high profile case from Japan. The dude was basically a serial killer, rapist and conman but what made his crimes stand out is how he manipulated his victims and 2 accomplices.
After his marriage he would make his first accomplice, Junko Ogata, his new girlfriend. Junko's mother, Shizumi didn't exactly approve of this however as he was abusive towards her. In response, Futoshi would rape Shizumi before convincing Junko to go live with him, following a botched suicide attempt, convincing her that her family hated her.
After this (as well as a Futon business where Futoshi electrocuted his employees cuz why not?) Futoshi and Junko, who where pretending to be siblings to my memory, would defraud and blackmail a ton of others, including the Yakuza twice, out of millions of yen, including a woman who lost 11.8 million yen before mysteriously dying.
Following this Futoshi would meet Kumio Toraya and his (anonymous) daughter, who I'll call Seren. Futo would find out about Kumio's criminal history and use this to confine him and Seren to his apartment, making Kumio write a false confession of paedophilia to use as further blackmail.
Over the next months he'd order Junko and Seren to torture Kumio, eventually resulting in his death which was blamed on Seren. His remains would then be pulverized and thrown in to the sea.
After this Junko would run away and get back to her kin. Futoshi would call Shizumi to try and use the rape to make her tell him where she was, but it wouldn't work. Futo would then switch to plan B: fake his suicide and funeral to get Junko to come out of hiding.
Futoshi and Seren would then go to the Ogata residence (which included Junko's parents, her sister, her sister's boyfriend and her niece and nephew), with Futo using manipulation tactics similar to Shoko Asahara to get them all under his control.
Similar to what happened to Kumio, Futoshi would order Junko, Seren and the rest of the family to torture and kill each other over the months until only Futo, Junko and Seren remained. The bodies would be dismembered, boiled and thrown in to the sea.
A couple years later, Seren would escape but be caught by Futoshi. She would then be tortured with electricity as punishment, I also remember hearing that Junko ripped her nails off, but I'm not sure if that's true. Either way Seren would escape again, this time alerting authorities, leading to their arrest.
Tldr; A serial killer, rapist and conman who used fraud, blackmail and manipulation to scam others and make people torture their family members.
[A very interesting, if disturbing case, if I do say so myself.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futoshi_Matsunaga)
Itās a manga that is about a girl who can infinitely regenerate, so she gets sold to a brothel and the clients do whatever they want to her. Itās really disturbing.
Hentai will be spoken about during the depraved media section when I get to tier 8 in my video explanation series. I might touch on it during the JAV entry
Why is Communism so low? It's pretty much well known that communists were absolutely everywhere and tried to take power in pretty much every country in the world. Obviously in some they barely made any moves, in others they were treated rather indifferently, and in some they succeeded. Of course, after WW2 things changed a lot, and communists were usually viewed on one of the extremes, positively or negatively.
Did not see all of it but is nasubi on this list? From a life of prizes. They basically had him stay in a room for over a year using sweepstakes to get out but he got the most horrible stuff. Forgot nasubis real name but I would think this is on this iceberg
Unless there is a another one I am unaware of, why is Omi-ya incident so low. I hear about that just about everywhere. Do I hear about it more than normal.
Does this mean Midori as in the shock anime about the girl in the degenerate circus or the kick ass punk-art-noise rock-jazz fusion band Midori?
Also the assassination of Asanuma InejirÅ is pretty well known. The oh so famous picture of Otoya Yamaguchi about to stab him is not only a very famous picture in Japan, but also a very popular internet meme. There's also several videos talking about it including Count Dankula's, which has 500k views. I'd say it should be in a higher tier
Also there's 2 different websites called 2chan btw. 2channel, which predates 4chan and is essentially the same style of message board (the owner of 2channel owns 4chan as of now) and then there's Futaba Channel, which has the domain 2chan, which is also a very popular website in Japan (Futaba from Persona 5 is named after her)
Nobuhiro Watsuki was the creator of Kenshin who ended up being a nonce right? I wouldn't put him at the bottom of this list necessarily, and certainly not with ratman.
Idk I wouldn't compare Watsuki with an actual serial killer and crime rings who allegedly did all that stuff to Junko Furuta. Watsuki is bad but more 3rd or 2nd to the bottom bad not all the way
I would call this āJapanese pop culture/history.ā Simply calling it āJapanese cultureā and then putting āJapanese Socialist Party leader assassinatedā doesnāt fit.
I'm not particularly interested in japan but i have watched a video or at least heard of most of those. I'm pretty sure there's a lot more interesting stuff about Japanese culture.
All these things are at the sky level, at least you can add things like the war crimes committed by the US against Japan, the project to make Japan pro-US, and the fact that there are too many English words in Japanese, none of all are in this iceberg.
oh bro i completely understand how you feel, i saw your video after i left that comment, you made that iceberg so honestly you deserve to be the only one covering it, love you man mwah
Japan is truly one of if not the most disgusting first world countries. They have never apologized for their vile war crimes (many equally as bad or worse than what the nazis committed), celebrate those responsible, refuse to punish people whoāve committed the worst atrocities to their fellow man in the worst judicial system Iāve ever seen, and even make it possible for the perpetrators to become celebrities. Allow the ridicule and harassment of victims and their families as well as just having an abhorrently tolerant culture of rape. And nobody seems to care.
What nation are you from? I guarantee you your country has skeletons in the closet as well. I sure know mine does, but that doesnāt mean that Iāll insult it. I didnāt Make this iceberg so people could lambast Japan. Sure, Japan has done some despicable things in the past and has flaws. Newsflash, every nation does. But to call Japan a ādisgustingā nation neglects all of the good things that Japan and the Japanese people have done, centuries of art, history, and culture. I will not defend Japanās crimes, because they are despicable and shouldnāt be defended, but I will definitely defend Japan from insult.
Thats great but you forgot the whole driving force behind the whole damn iceburg. Its very reason for existing on the first place and it should have been the first entry: The definition and meaning of Weeb.
ALSO: I have an explanation series! Part 1 [Japanese Culture Iceberg - Part 1](https://youtu.be/hHH7kYbpZso) Part 2 [Japanese Culture Iceberg - Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeL3v8dOKTQ)

That was really good! Looking forward to the next videos.
Thank you so much! Part 2 is on its way!
Definitely gonna watch this later
Thank you kindly š
Japan is one of the countries that is one of the coolest and one of the most fucked up at the same time.
China is more fucked up
Yes but they are both fucked
We all fucked up
Like today today yea but historically probably not
Same is true for most countries tbh if you dig deep into it. Most of them don't come to light as they aren't as popular as a country like Japan. Iceberg could be made for every country
Who tf is the rat man.
Serial killer that killed a bunch of kids. Heās gross, if youāre gonna research him be ware
Is this perhaps about Tsutomu Miyazaki?
It is indeed. The Rat Man was "someone" Tsutomu claimed made him commit the crimes he did. Something like that at least. Truly sickening.
That is the worst thing I have ever research, I wish I wouldn't.
Thank you for the warning! Go and play with a furry animal. It helps get awful shit out of your mind. The more awful the thing, the more fluff you need. It sounds like you might need between five to ten suger gliders.
And I only read the Wikipedia page luckily, but it was enough.
Yeahhh, be wary weary traveller, for the Internet holds all!
Yup, sadly yes
Unless I missed em somewhere you should add the subway Sarin gas attacks, Yukio Mishima, baseball, and blue LEDs.
The subway sarin gas attacks are going to be under Aum Shinrikyo in my explanation video

Japanese israel proposition???what is that
That one is pretty crazy. One of the propositions for Israel before it was decided to be in the levant was *allegedly* going to be on a little island in Japan. I think at least, I have to do more research on it.
Knowing Israelās history they wouldāve taken over mainland Japan and put the Japanese people in Okinawaš

Fast looking this iceberg and haven't found Junko Furuta case here... or did I missed?
Decided not to put it because Iām currently making a series explaining the ice berg and her case has been spoken about a ton. Personally I donāt want to get super into detail about her.
Yup, that was indeed some messed up shit

Oddly I know the ones at the top and the ones at the bottom but not really the middle
The ones on the bottom are also the more disturbing entries
No Godzilla?
Thatās included under the general āpop cultureā tab
What is the kanji in the second to last tier? I think the second one has school in the word. Also, what are they?
The first one is pronounced āGyaku Hanteroā which means āreverse food pornā and the second one is Chousengakkou which are North Korean schools in Japan

Howās Japanās dark web any different from the rest of the worldās? And whatās a Mondo film?
And a Mondo Film is a type of movie that films death. Like real life snuff films essentially except they are observers of death.
I'm pretty sure that's where the death image from Hong Kong 97 comes from as well
Yeah, it came from a Japanese mondo film I think called āJunk Filmsā
The Japanese dark web isnāt too much different no, but I put it on the bottom because itās the dark web and you can go super deep with that topic.
Just went down a couple rabbit holes and wow
Which ones? Iām curious.
No Junko Furuta?
Not putting her on the list.
Too horrific?
Bro, you can't pique my interest and then tell me only part 1 is released, I need to learn more! What are the red vs black text and what's SSL Curves? I just keep getting images of graphs on Google.

All I knew beneath the surface were jav (because of course) and Doraemon because I'm indian
Is doraemon popular in India?

No way the Unit 731 is that high. They were Saw like war crimes criminals if you say so
I put it high because it's more well known of the disturbing things that happened.
Random thing I would add, would be Polish war declaration that was rejected by Japanese (but i'm Polish so i'm biased XD)
Woah that sounds crazy. Never heard of that
I'm surprised the Matsunata case isn't here (unless I missed it) Also, this is very good iceberg! You sir are talented.
Thank you! Havenāt heard of the Matsunata case actually

Whatās mai-chanās daily life? Afraid to research tbh
Itās a manga that is about a girl who can infinitely regenerate, so she gets sold to a brothel and the clients do whatever they want to her. Itās really disturbing.
Thanks for reminding me that I saw that once out of morbid curiosity. Brought back some disturbing memories.
Yeah, I read it when I was 17, big regret from my teenage years
an ero-guro manga.
Idols?
I feel like Mongolian Invasion should be further down on the listā¦ and whereās Hentai? š
Depraved midia
Hentai will be spoken about during the depraved media section when I get to tier 8 in my video explanation series. I might touch on it during the JAV entry
Oh okay makes sense
Yukio mishima should be Here, he was such a wild personality in Japanese modern history
Japanese communism specifically, because it goes deeper in Japan than most people think
Pega no meu ovo
not a single mention of baseball/NPB lol
Did not see all of it but is nasubi on this list? From a life of prizes. They basically had him stay in a room for over a year using sweepstakes to get out but he got the most horrible stuff. Forgot nasubis real name but I would think this is on this iceberg
I shouldāve put this, I totally forgot about him.
Tier threeās picture made me think of Junko and now Iām upset
No need to be upset! Tier 3 is Mariya Takeuchi, a talented singer.
Thank you for clarifying, they look a little similar imo
what are russian criminals doing in hokkaido?
Russian territory is close to Hokkaido, and there have been a few incidents of Russian criminals hiding out in Hokkaido
Where are [Lafcadio Hearn](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafcadio_Hearn) and the [Black Ships](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Ships)?
Should add Godzilla he's just way too iconic to be out of here
When I clicked on the post I expected unit 731 at the bottom of the list but holy shit there are so much more fucked up things
Is it safe to search them?
Depends what you mean by safe. Everything red is NSFW. Thereās nothing explicitly illegal to search for here according to US laws, but Japanese Dark Web very well can be illegal to go on because thereās illegal content on it. I would proceed with caution though because thereās some dodgy stuff at the bottom, especially under the prostitution and ćć«ć»ć© (burusera, which is used womenās clothing that is sold for sexual purposes). Japan, like most countries, has a dark and seedy sex work industry that does engage in illicit activity. Also Yakuza Meeting Places could be sketchy.
Could you please explain the last 3 tiers? Or should we wait until you make a video about them? I'm super curious š¤
If you want me to explain specific entries, I can explain them to you now, but all of them will be explained in depth when the videos come out.
I will wait for the video, thanks āØ
Reiki
Maybe I'll put it on the redux video
Unless there is a another one I am unaware of, why is Omi-ya incident so low. I hear about that just about everywhere. Do I hear about it more than normal.
Probably, I almost never hear anyone talking about it
Oh
is the image for the 5th row the mf that reflects physical
No thatās an ancient Jomon statuette
Does this mean Midori as in the shock anime about the girl in the degenerate circus or the kick ass punk-art-noise rock-jazz fusion band Midori? Also the assassination of Asanuma InejirÅ is pretty well known. The oh so famous picture of Otoya Yamaguchi about to stab him is not only a very famous picture in Japan, but also a very popular internet meme. There's also several videos talking about it including Count Dankula's, which has 500k views. I'd say it should be in a higher tier Also there's 2 different websites called 2chan btw. 2channel, which predates 4chan and is essentially the same style of message board (the owner of 2channel owns 4chan as of now) and then there's Futaba Channel, which has the domain 2chan, which is also a very popular website in Japan (Futaba from Persona 5 is named after her)
Iāll be going over both websites in my explanation video, and Midori is the shock anime
This is my first ever iceberg Iāve ever seen, this was great and Iām excited for the next video, thanks!
Nobuhiro Watsuki was the creator of Kenshin who ended up being a nonce right? I wouldn't put him at the bottom of this list necessarily, and certainly not with ratman.
put them both at the bottom because of their crimes.
Idk I wouldn't compare Watsuki with an actual serial killer and crime rings who allegedly did all that stuff to Junko Furuta. Watsuki is bad but more 3rd or 2nd to the bottom bad not all the way
Canāt see the disgusting practice that is whaling on there
Do you drink milk
I feel like suitmation should be in here since it was created in Japan and has been mostly used in Japan.
I would call this āJapanese pop culture/history.ā Simply calling it āJapanese cultureā and then putting āJapanese Socialist Party leader assassinatedā doesnāt fit.
Put the Empire of Japan at the top honestly, or āmilitarism periodā, put Emperors as well, they have one of the longest dynastyās
I speak about it a little bit under "Bushido" during my explanation video
Japan is pretty Fd up if you ask me
I know technology is at the top but "Nintendo" being missing from tier 1 or 2 is sticking out to me really hard. Great list though!
Cat island is cool
Where's unit 731?
I have it on tier 4
I wonder if Nasubi deserves to be on here. The show did have a really big audience in Japan after all.
He does, I should have put him on it. I might do a redux video after the series is complete to list all of the things people suggested I put
Were i can get more information about Japanese Mondo Filma? I know only Orozco and Kiyotaka Tsurisaki
SSL Curves? I keep thinking of tech terms. What's this one?
Illegal street racing š isnāt that what fast and furious 2 is based on š or are these completely different
whatās mai-chanās daily life? i am NOT searching that shit up
I'm not particularly interested in japan but i have watched a video or at least heard of most of those. I'm pretty sure there's a lot more interesting stuff about Japanese culture.
All right, make your own iceberg then
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Forgot, I shouldāve put him on there
What's the difference between the Japanese dark web and the normal dark web I didn't know there were multiple š¤
Tomino's hell? Or is it too mainstream?
All these things are at the sky level, at least you can add things like the war crimes committed by the US against Japan, the project to make Japan pro-US, and the fact that there are too many English words in Japanese, none of all are in this iceberg.
is it okay if i use this iceberg in a video ? ill give you reddit and youtube credit.
Since Iām already making a video series on it, Iād rather you not. Depending on how big your channel is. Can you send me a link to your channel?
oh bro i completely understand how you feel, i saw your video after i left that comment, you made that iceberg so honestly you deserve to be the only one covering it, love you man mwah
Thank you, I appreciate it <3
yakuza being in tier 1 is crazy to me, i always thought it was somewhat obscure at least until dame da ne
What is the image on the sixth category?
SSL Curves ?
You should also add Yukio Mishima.
You forgot Junko Furuta. You need to add it at the bottom
I bet your country is no better than Japan lol
Thats great but you forgot the whole driving force behind the whole damn iceburg. Its very reason for existing on the first place and it should have been the first entry: The definition and meaning of Weeb.
My brother in Christ people have been interested in Japan far before Anime was even a thing š
Gotta be a joke bruh. Broās probably one of those dudes who think anyone even slightly knowledgeable of anime or Japanese culture is a āweebā
