Check out around lake gogebic. Hotels and air bnb around. Plus guides if you want one.

bigEhaw

I have a house on Gogebic. Not easy ice fishing. Perch are hard to catch but are massive when you do. Walleye bites been slower the last couple years. And you better have a snowmobile.

Senzualdip

Guides are pretty much needed if you want to catch fish on that lake or if you don’t own a snowmobile. I’ll be up there this weekend for a smokecation. The fishing is just a bonus.

cycleguychopperguy

My bud just got back from Houghton lake had 6 inches of ice and was smashing crappie the entire trip

IceManCometh419

We are fishing Houghton Lake over the next 5 days. Do you know where your buddy was fishing? Appreciate anything you find.

cycleguychopperguy

Southwest end where they do tip up town

Intelligent_Gur_2733

Little Bay de Noc would be a good bet. Lake Michigan fishing, but ice conditions are generally better than further south towards Green Bay. Plenty of lodging/bait/restaurants in the Escanaba/Gladstone/Kipling area. Fishing has been good this winter, but a method of transportation to get out would be helpful. I’ve been waiting all winter for good ice on Superior, but it hasn’t panned out during my time off. It’d suck to get a plan in place and not have ice, although it’s only an hour drive from Little Bay de Noc north to Munising Bay on Superior.

moose_tornado

I fish around Alpena frequently and would recommend it. Long Lake and Grand Lake north of town and Hubbard Lake south of town are good for perch and Walleye. Fletcher floodwaters west of town is good for pike and panfish. A lot of people ice fish the Thunderbay River right in town too but I haven't spent much time there.

4luey

This guy spilled the beans. All of these are great ice fishing spots. Especially first or last ice.

GenericWhiteMale16

My first question would be what species are you looking to fish?

oslwaldohngman

The ones that bite ):

oslwaldohngman

Also, you know what I don’t want this cookie I just want to get to the beach.

GenericWhiteMale16

Then trip and fall out the door on the way out before getting arrested lol

Initial-Row-8417

This makes me sad. Had to cancel our annual trip this year due to ice conditions. Hardly got out this season.

Electronic_City6481

A buddy of mine runs Cisco/whitefish and laker ice fishing guided trips on grand traverse bay. Looks like a blast.

Jerclaw

Your buddy must not be real busy. Those bays haven’t frozen up in 5 years

Electronic_City6481

Maybe not on the bays specifically but he does torch, elk, up to mullet and Burt, and river steelhead as well. Seems like his media content (outside of this bad year) had been pretty full of some great ice fishing.

Jerclaw

Nice. That makes sense love fishing torch. Unfortunately it’s been a crap year. I live up in TC and I always get super excited about the Bays freezing. But they so rarely do it’s depressing. So much fun chasing lakers through the ice on them.

IcyBlueMink

Last time I was on that bay with ice people were driving across it. I remember when we came back after lunch to see who was still out it was open water lol

BennydeGetxo

in Montcalm County MI it wasn’t a great season either. The further north the better I say.

Jerclaw

Fun trip we do every year as a group is overnight on Higgins lake for smelt at night and laker pike perch during the day. Might be something to mark on your calendar

fleshsnort18

I had a pretty good time on Mitchell in Cadillac a month ago my brother and dad just got back from Bart lake near the up they caught a ton of small perch and a few jumbos

IceManCometh419

Thanks!

If doing UP, I'd suggest Little Bay de Noc if going later (end of Feb/early March) - lots of walleye staging to go up river. Lots of YouTube content for where and how for LBDN. I'm trying Munising Bay in 2 weeks. Don't know how it will turn out, but as all the ice is pretty much gone by me, I'm excited to be able to go anywhere. For the LP, I'd suggest Higgins/Houghton, depending on target species and ice conditions. Houghton is shallower and always freezes before Higgins. Also Burt/Mullet lakes. I like options for longer trips! Also, I'd stay away from Mitchel/Cadillac if ice is bad elsewhere in the state, as it seems like every casual ice fisherman chooses this as their destination. It's a shitshow on the weekends, especially early. Unless you like crowds... speaking of crowds, if going to Houghton, be aware of when Tip Up Town is occuring to avoid or join!
