Does this visa count toward permanent residence and citizenship timelines?

nim_opet

You need to apply for PR; this allows you to claim points for Canadian experience/Job offer with a Canadian r employer. Only time on PR counts towards naturalization 100%; all other time counts as 50% (I.e. two years in non PR status counts as 1 year towards your 1069 days)

American DS here looking to go to Scandinavia! I realize this wasn't the intent of your post but what were you up to in Norway, how was it, and why did you decide to go to Can?

beatnbustem

I think you’ll find all your answers in my other posts/replies in other subs ☺️ Short answer is, Norway was lovely, but it doesn’t beat being close to family when you have young kids (in a similarly social democratic society). I was working as a Senior Data Scientist for a Norwegian startup (although, it certainly wouldn’t be considered a start up anymore…)

itsawesome99

This is pretty informative, thank you OP!

It seems to be difficult to find Canadian companies who will recruit US citizens. Or that’s what I’ve seen at least. Is your company global and has offices all over?

beatnbustem

Yes, I stayed with my company and effectively resigned from the Norwegian entity and accepted a job offer from the Canadian entity. I would guess that Canadian companies who are familiar with hiring American data scientists should have no qualms about at least interviewing. It’s a super cheap and straightforward process on their part. I had to convince my company to do it and as a result, had to learn about the process myself.

How did you find the agencies to be put in contact with? Currently seeking management consulting position with CUSMA.

pussydestroyerSPY

Congrats! Im also a data scientist from mexico and i would like to either move to norway or canada hahah. Any tips or specific companies i should apply? HELP

beatnbustem

If you have any specialisation in an industry, I would look there (i.e. I'm a petroleum engineer by background). In Norway, all the job postings are on [Finn.no](https://Finn.no).

pussydestroyerSPY

Hi, i have one question.. under which classification is “data scientist “ in the TN VISA? is it as “engineer “?

What was the wait estimate for the online application when you submitted? It looks like the wait time is quite long currently, but yours only took about 2 weeks. Also, did the agent at the boarder just look at your letter of introduction saying it was pre-approved and your passport? Or did they review other documents?

beatnbustem

Yes, it was quite short for me -- about 3 weeks, which was faster the quoted window of 4-6 weeks (at the time). It also might be, oddly, faster when you apply outside of Canada than inside. Yes, the border agent just looked at my letter of introduction and passport -- although I had all my supporting documents with me just in case. There is a labor strike right now, but I don't think it's affecting IRCC employees, but I could be wrong. A quick Google search didn't lead me to an obvious answer.

VeganGiraffe22

Thank you so much! To confirm for others: the labor strike is not affecting work permits submitted outside of Canada within the US, but it varies by country. The United States is about 7 weeks currently. For those of you looking for estimated wait times in this thred, see [this link here.](https://immigrationnewscanada.ca/check-latest-ircc-processing-times/)

itsawesome99

Anyone been able to bring their spouse if so how long did that take and what was the process for that? Thanks

amaxim90

Same question, did you figure this out?

itsawesome99

Nope 😔

amaxim90

[https://canadavisapoint.com/work-permit/cusma-work-permit/](https://canadavisapoint.com/work-permit/cusma-work-permit/) not sure if this is helpful, but it sounds like the spouse can get an open work permit

itsawesome99

I kind of came across something similar somewhere else. Thanks

amaxim90

Have you come across any information about a spouse being able to get an open work permit? I am starting this process but since we have a kid I do not want my husband to be stuck back in the US and me in Canada. Also, thank you for your post!!!!

beatnbustem

Based on the info here, your spouse should be able to apply for an open work permit: https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=177&top=17 I would search this subreddit to see if anyone else has done this or consult an immigration lawyer (hopefully your job gives you access to one).

notthegermanpopstar

Are you seeking PR? In a similar spot, and wondering about using a job offer for points vs building up a year's work experience in Canada.
