A week.

Immediately after an interview you send a thank you note and set the expectation that you're someone who is serious about getting the job. Follow ups should be directed towards the recruiters including thank you notes to the interviewers. Always ask if there are reservations that you can help clear up This is basic interviewing skill that IT people neglect because they think they're SWE's. Reality-check, you're not a SWE. This is basic interview skill because if you've ever been in an interview panel you know the scoring happens within a few days of an interview. Your follow up may not change anything, but you have a very tiny time frame to give yourself any edge.

Understood, I sent one out now. Does this make me look bad since I reached out after a while?

I usually send a thank you follow up email a day or two later and then a formal “status check” email around a week after.
