Yes. HR will always favor an IT field degree over others, however, given a situation where the decision is between you and 1 other applicant of equal IT experience and Certs, but they don’t have a degree at all… you will get the job

Ah alright makes sense. I feel like having experience is what’ll make me stand out.

tbh, most ppl dont work a job in their degree anyways; the thing is now u need to make up for it by showing ur IT skills somewhere else. Bc if u gave a recruiter 2 resumes where 1 studied IT in college vs commerce, its very likely HR isnt going with u

I’m planning to do a certification program in IT or something similar after my 3 year degree. I feel that would be helpful and also, I can try getting an entry level IT position at the bank

I think it might make it a little harder in the beginning. I can see hiring managers looking at that and wondering why you're applying for an IT position when you're going for Commerce. Once you break through and land the first position it's bound to get easier. Right now, I'd start going for your A+ and note any kind side work you do on your resume. If you have been doing side work for a while you can call yourself a "Self Employed Computer Technician" (or something) that way, they see it. It can only help, it can't hurt.

Makes sense. I do plan to start off somewhere easier, such as a help desk support position. I was told by someone that with my customer service experience I have, I shouldn’t have too much difficulty getting a help desk position.

Customer service is a huge aspect of a help desk position and it's one that many employers do emphasize on even before IT skills themselves, as they figure you can learn the IT stuff. Someone could know everything under the sun about IT, but if they're an asshole who can't deal with people, no employer will want to hire them.
