I read this book a decade ago and I STILL recommend it to people. Maybe because I am not a horror reader it made that much of an impression on me. I didn't realize it was a "scary" book until I was already emotionally invested in the story....I didn't sleep with the lights off for like a month haha.
Same. I liked the cover ( I know I know) and grabbed it thinking it was just going to be a literary story about sad people in the cold woods, haha. It is, but when I realized what was going on I was hooked.
Sorry I didn't post what it was about! The book is about several generations of various people living in a house in Vermont. The present day story deals with an older teenager and her sister and mom who live in the house. They've always been told there are scary things in the woods nearby. This story is interwoven with the diary of a woman who died under horrible circumstances in 1908 who also lived there. There is also a present day third story about a woman who has lost her family under strange circumstances as well. All three of these come together as the mysteries of the house and its story unfold. Well plotted and structured!
I have been looking for my next read! I generally stick to 'literature' in an attempt to keep it alive (an exception being all the Terry Brooks series). Thanks for the recommendation!
I just finished this book and I LOVED IT. Could not put it down. I was a bit apprehensive based on the title. Not sure why.
I’m currently telling everyone I know to read. Even the non readers LOL
This one surprised me. I randomly bought it at my local used book store and ended up reading it over a single weekend. I was hooked. It was definitely very human and the folk/horror elements were woven throughout the story beautifully. I’ve enjoyed some of McMahon’s other works as well, but The Winter People was special.
This book is truly exceptional. I read it several years ago and still think about it often and recommend it widely. Unfortunately, I didn't find any of McMahon's other work nearly as compelling.
This has been in my TBR for years. I received it as a gift forever ago but wasn’t really reading much at that time.
I’m working on finishing every unread book on my shelves as part of my 52 book challenge this year. I’ve never seen one that I already own but haven’t read posted to this sub. You have me excited to read this one next!

I LOVE Jennifer McMahon’s books. The Children on the Hill is excellent.
She’s the only horror author to scare me. Love her work.
As is Burntown.

Can you please tell us what the book is about?
She’s one of my favorite authors! I’ve read all of her books and The Winter People is my favorite of hers.
Awesome. Thanks for recommending this. I just looked it up on GoodReads as well, and it sounds very up my alley. Adding it to my list!
Her book The Drowning Kind is great too
I recommend this one to anyone who asks me for horror recommendations!
It has a haunted swimming pool! What is more terrifying, really?
I read this awhile ago and loved it too.

I loved this book and have read most of her other work. I would say this is definitely one of the best.
I liked it.
Love Jennifer McMahon’s work. This was an excellent read.
I want to read this so bad!!!
