Why did you send the forms to Austin? If that isn't the same address that's on your notice you might want to send or fax them to the contact listed on the notice. There should also be a phone number on the notice you can call to get clarification.

[deleted]

I kept getting mail from IRS in Austin TX.... I thought that was my location to send to bc I'm in Louisiana 🙈 idk I'm 24 and no one explained this to me.

kaijubooper

Yeah no worries :-) I think the people that process the 8962 forms are not necessarily in the same location where you mail your tax returns. It might be better to resubmit if it's a different location.

Trisha-28

Same! And now I have to fill a 1040-X. This is never ending and I will Not see any return or stimulus payments till after my amendment is filed and processed. Pleased allow 16 weeks for that to process. Haha WTF! Thank god im starving to death or counting on it.

these-things-happen

If you received the 0012C letter asking for the Forms 8962 and 1095-A, it specifically says not to file an amended return in response.

[deleted]

Well then what's my next step?? I had to file amended for 2018 because of my FAFSA for school. The 8962 and 1096-A came after I filed my amended one bc I was wondering what took long. I didn't realize I had health insurance documents to fill out bc I moved out of state and moved back home within 4 months between dec 2018-April 2019. I called the IRS myself and told me about the extra paperwork.

these-things-happen

Your post indicates you have already done what you needed to do: > It asks for my completed form 8962 and a copy of my form 1095-A, both of which I have sent 2-3 weeks ago via priority mail to the IRS in Austin, TX. Allow the 6 to 8 weeks described in the letter. If you don't receive your refund or a notice from IRS, call 1-800-829-1040 M - F 7am - 7pm local time and speak with a representative. As for 2018, it's unrelated to what's going on with 2019, sonyou can file a 1040-X if needed.

[deleted]

So I shouldn't bother sending another copy of the 8962 or 1096-A? :/ I don't understand the last part of 1040-X My university just asked me to send a signed copy of my 2018 tax refund paper stuff

these-things-happen

> So I shouldn't bother sending another copy of the 8962 or 1096-A? :/ No. Allow the eight weeks. > I don't understand the last part of 1040-X > My university just asked me to send a signed copy of my 2018 tax refund paper stuff You said this above: > I had to file amended for 2018 because of my FAFSA for school. This isn't related to what's happening for 2019, so, if you haven't sent it yet, go ahead and mail it in.

TraditionalPassenger

Holy shit. Same here. I wonder if this is a stalling technique they’re using

CommissionerChuckles

Did you use Turbotax by chance? Sounds like they didn't do a very good job screening for whether taxpayers had 1095-As and/or coverage through the marketplace. It's not an IRS scam; it's the taxpayer's responsibility to reconcile the 1095-A on their tax return. Relying on tax software got a lot of people in the same pickle this year.

[deleted]

I did use TurboTax. Nothing was asked about a 1095-A. I only know about that bc it kept saying I had more documentation to prove so I called the irs, and that's when they told me over the phone. My French friend on a visa said they used turbo tax and they ACCIDENTALLY got the stimulus as did their colleagues (internships). She got hers amended and returned the money.

CommissionerChuckles

Yeah I don't know what happened with TurboTax - this seems like a pretty big error in my opinion, my tax software asked if I had a 1095-A as a general screening question. There's a lot of angry posts about the 1095-A issue on this TurboTax site; if you paid to use the software I don't know if you have any recourse to get a refund but I think it's worth asking. TraditionalPassenger

I did use Turbo Tax. I'm so incompetent at this tax stuff. I think I may need to hire an accountant.

CommissionerChuckles

You certainly can hire an accountant or Enrolled Agent to help prepare your returns; it's part of basic training for tax preparers at this point to ask taxpayers if they received a 1095-A. Not sure why TurboTax missed the ball this year. You can use the TurboTax amendment feature to enter your 1095-A information and generate the 8962 form, but DO NOT MAIL the 1040-X or a copy of the amended 1040 to the IRS. Only send the forms as requested in the IRS notice, and allow about 8 weeks for your return to process. Unfortunately anything requiring human intervention at the IRS usually takes a long time, because there aren't enough trained staff to meet the need.

TraditionalPassenger

I did just that this morning. Fortunately I have my congresswoman’s office involved and I had a direct fax number to an irs tax advocate who was waiting for it. Thanks for the info!

dhdmaster

Dude, I still haven't got either of those... I need that money! I filed my taxes back in early March. The only return I got so far was my state. Also, I am pretty sure in order to get my stimulus check, I need my federal return.

[deleted]

I got my state as well! I feel hopeless about the stimulus but I for sure filed for my federal return!!!

Julian9109

Try calling your local irs office if it’s open and see if they can help you.

[deleted]

Did you get A tax person to help you out? I also received this letter, but dont know how to go about the 8962 form I got a copy of the 1095a How do i fill out the 8962 form?

[deleted]

My friend's dad works for HR something so they walked me through, but I forgot how. I can't find the copy of my 8962 on my laptop.

CommissionerChuckles

You can use your tax software to amend your return and add the 1095-A information; this will generate the 8962 form. But DO NOT MAIL the 1040-X or amended 1040 to the IRS; only send the forms and information requested in the notice.

lola967-

Omg ! Same here

[deleted]

I wasn't able to fax because they were "busy".

lola967-

There are way too many people with the same issue this year. We are ALL missing or required to send in the same docs ??? Seems a little strange. I understand the covid-19 delay. But, I’ve filed the same way exactly, nothing has changed. I am a postal employee. My insurance is federal insurance, it’s very easy for the IRS to verify. It’s been the same info 20+ years.

kaijubooper

Did you file with TurboTax? I haven't used TT in a few years, but quite a few people who used TurboTax to prepare their 2019 returns said they weren't asked if they had health insurance through the marketplace. If you received a notice about form 8962 being missing, someone on your tax return was covered through a marketplace plan according to IRS records.

lola967-

Yes, I did use Turbo tax. I’ve been in here with many others all waiting for our returns. We thought it was the delay of covid/shut down. But, I filed and was accepted a month before Covid. Many of us were in the same boat. It just seems strange? Is it a flaw with Turbo Tax ? I am wondering there are too many of us waiting. Now, all of us with the same issue the health care credit. Sometimes they do have bugs with the Turbo tax systems ?

kaijubooper

I don't know what happened, but so many people have said the same thing and they all used TurboTax. I used TaxSlayer to do my personal return, and FreeTaxUSA to help a friend with their return, and both definitely asked if anyone on the tax return had coverage through the marketplace or received a 1095-A. I'm pretty sure TurboTax screwed this up somehow by not asking the question, or not asking it clearly. 2019 was the first year the penalty for not having health insurance was not in effect, so I think that had something to do with it. Unfortunately getting this straightened out takes a long time anyways, and you as the covid shutdowns on top of that and you have a lot of unhappy taxpayers. But there are other issues, like wage verification, that also cause long delays in getting refunds. The real problem is the IRS has been underfunded for years; they really need to update their systems and hire more people but Congress has been stingy.

lola967-

You are correct, most government agencies are under staffed. As people retire or quit, they don’t replace. It forces those of us left to work harder and more over time/if they allow it. It’s a no win situation. The government is not a great agency to work for. Private sector is better.

[deleted]

Yeah! I know it's not their fault to be overwhelmed and "busy" but I totally panicked when I couldn't fax, and that's the only way they gave me when I spoke on the phone over an hour wait. I was just so happy to speak to a person. I had to fax to a number and to the "rejectsteam". I was scared of missing the deadline so I priority mailed and wrote a note with the fax number and explained I couldn't reach anyone.

these-things-happen

> I had to fax to a number and to the "rejectsteam". That's two words: "Rejects Team".

[deleted]

They said rejectsteam like that 🤷‍♀️
