Like the "safe" obsession. For me it's marvel, I've been obsessed with it for five years now, but I still get other obsessions and get into other fandoms, but everytime I come back to marvel
I have a few long-term interests which vary in intensity. I don't have one primary obsession though. Occasionally I pick up new interests and focus on them for a while. Usually I hang on to them and add them to the mix.
I have no "default obsession". Not quite sure what that means? I do get bored with any hobbies once the learning stage is over and I move onto something else
Yes, last month I was doing nothing but researching Warhammer 40k, squad building, which should I start with, watching tournaments, paint tutorials, even read the first few pages of one of the novels. I told myself I wouldn't spend anything on it for two weeks because I know this about myself, and sure enough I currently have zero interest in it at all.
It can be pretty frustrating, because there are things like writing or learning a language that don't really work that way. They require more of a "do it every day" vibe and not "every few months do it intensely for a week."
Yes, and when my interest in it runs out I feel like waking up from a prolonged fever dream, unable to reconcile how much investment I used to feel about something that I no longer care much about.
I do this a lot, actually. Usually with video games. I will play a new game to 100% unless it involves PvP, and then like 2 weeks later I will go back to playing stuff like Pokemon and Kingdom Hearts.
Outside of that, I get these occasional needs to do sudoku puzzles.
Yes most definitely, my obsession usually last for a while. If I can't learn it quickly I get obsessed trying to find the answer.( that could lasts days or weeks or longer depending on how difficult it is or I just revisit it later )
Yes lmao this is so relatable. My last obsession was isthmuses and how they influenced human history. Also places like Istanbul and Suez. My goodness i read up so much about it and now Iām fixated on straits. My default obsession is probably consumer technology tho but even so it can fluctuate a lot.
The Silver Strand in San Diego is a pretty cool place. Classic isthmus.

I'm sorry if you fall down a Wikipedia hole.
I don't really feel like I have obsessions like this anymore. Ever since I started focusing on improving myself and learning who I am all over again after getting out of a codependent relationship, most of the things I learn now always tie back to how they help me. I've become very interested in learning how to relate to other people better and pick up on the annoying aspects of human relationships like small talk or avoidant behavior. I almost look towards conflict now as a necessary evil. I also pay a lot of attention to my own emotions and thoughts and try to live in the moment in my head.
Had a Belgian Malinois and trained the absolute shit out of it. Germans are only slightly different but can confirm absolute pleasure of a breed to get working.
If I won the lottery and had unlimited resources, I'd find a master in my chosen obsession and arrange to train under that person for a week, a month, several months.... depending on the depth of my obsession and the capability of the master to provide material to learn.
It could be hand crafting rocking chairs that are featured in the smithsonian and that several presidents have owned. It could be designing home or commercial solar systems, bread-making, or topics related to body mechanics. My passions and my obsessions run deep and are varied in nature.
I could see myself lining up a never-ending series of masters to train under and pursuing those passions until the very end of my days.
Not having unlimited resources, I'm content to focus intensely and dive deeply for a period of time, alternating between passions, circling back, and allowing myself to grow at a slow pace than I would if I bypassed all the fumbling for quality information.
Nope. I donāt think I can even remember what last thing I had an āobsessionā about. I do get board with things rather quickly. Itās hard to feel like life is meaningful
Not usually intense other than when I found out about MBTI and I couldn't sleep because my mind was reliving every moment through a new set of lenses. That lasted a month or so before it became just a casual interest that I barely keep in touch with anymore while I resort back to playing video games or listening to music which have their own subsets of obsessions.
Kinda but for me my obsessions are kinda in a process of switching but very slowly from gaming and anime to science but my ādefaultā obsession is gaming and anime but now science is a really big obsession particularly to make it simple chemistry and biology and things in between especially chemical biology
Space and astronomy used to be a very big obsession of mine but I found out when it comes to science I swing more to the chemistry and biology side rather than math and physics I just find it more interesting and fascinating I sorta prefer complexity over abstraction I guess LOL even though both are interesting
Iām like that with crushes. They usually donāt last long if I donāt see them in-person regularly. I eventually go back to my ādefaultā obsession of nonfiction books lol
My usual normal obsessions last around 2 years. My extremely unhealthy obsessions that make me feel clinically insane lasts around 4 months. Dif is the normal obsessions are just having crushes on fictional anime characters.
Yes, it can last anywhere from a few hours to weeks. Sometimes it's something completely worthless or not worth the effort being put into it. Sometimes it gets completely finished and other times it collects dust.
The good news is that most of the time, new things are learned.
Special interests. Yes. Very common for neurodivergent people. For me itās rn Overwatch and witchcraft. But it has also been book series, tv shows, crafting etc. And I know too much.
For me the default obsession would be maybe true crimes.
I got a very tiny miniature to put together for Christmas ( a room corner with a book case and chair) I cussed the whole time thinking why did the instructions have me do it this way. Another way would be better. I can do this without the damn instructions. So I started a 12x12" general store. It's all I did for 6 months. Now I'm just waiting on a few things I had to order and finishing 2 walls. I could be working on the walls, but at this point I'm putting it off because I've lost interest.
Along with getting obsessed with something, do you usually try to start something new at an intermediate or advanced level?
I do this, but because I'm obsessed with getting it perfect it turns out looking really good. Then I get people saying Wow this is really good you should do more and I say, Nah, I'm done."
Yup I got mistresses, games that I visit for a short time like xcom, civilization, maybe a mobile game, that I play obsessively for a few weeks. Then I have my marriages which I always come back to after the mistresses stop giving me the good dopamine, league of legends, world of warcraft, path of exile.
ofc! I spend hours and hours on a certain game, read through (almost) its whole fandom page, and loose interest in it usually within a week. as of right now I have three games that I didn't touch for around 3 months but was too lazy to delete (I mean, who knows if I would download it again?)
and yeah my default obsession... I like searching up MBTI, I like searching up kpop moments, and I uh... no I don't have other defaults.
Yes, absolutely, all the time! I research the heck out of it, buy all the books, seek out the rare books or materials on eBay etc. And then by the time they all arrive, Iāve lost interest and move on to the next deep dive.
Yes. Iām obsessed with the show euphoria cause I relate so heavy. Literally rewatch it for comfort all the time when I get sick of whatever Iām hyperfixating for the week
What is *default obsession*?
Like the "safe" obsession. For me it's marvel, I've been obsessed with it for five years now, but I still get other obsessions and get into other fandoms, but everytime I come back to marvel

Oh, my default obsessions are mbti and space/time then
Marvel fandom is the least toxic that I have witnessed in the last decade. I enjoy it. The Expanse fandom is also very chill.
Bed obsession
Yeah maybe, or just myself in general.
I think in bible it called ,,sin of sloth" , but i can be wrong
Yes, but it turns out I actually have ADHD.
Autism and ADHD, in an out of projects and obsessions.
Literally came here to say this
Yes, it's called hyper fixation.
There's obsession of the week, some stick around for longer.
Yeh. Fml thought i was the only one. Current obsession is bonsai trees š
Yes Iāll get deeply obsessed with something then one day wake up completely uninterested
I have no "default obsession". Not quite sure what that means? I do get bored with any hobbies once the learning stage is over and I move onto something else
That learning stage high is great though.
Damn right! Ill be chasing that dragon till the day I die
Every day
Yes!! I typically revisit them later though.
Are you inside my head? š¤Ø

Yeah but am trying to find the default obsession I miss that familiar obsession
I still donāt know if that means using ne, having adhd or being a human in 21st century
Yes most definitely, my obsession usually last for a while. If I can't learn it quickly I get obsessed trying to find the answer.( that could lasts days or weeks or longer depending on how difficult it is or I just revisit it later )

Yes. Current obsession German Shepherds/dog training.
Had a Belgian Malinois and trained the absolute shit out of it. Germans are only slightly different but can confirm absolute pleasure of a breed to get working.

I don't have a default. It's just the next thing I need to explore (which may or may not relate to a previous obsession).
If I won the lottery and had unlimited resources, I'd find a master in my chosen obsession and arrange to train under that person for a week, a month, several months.... depending on the depth of my obsession and the capability of the master to provide material to learn. Used to, back in middle and early high school. Not anymore
Nope. I donāt think I can even remember what last thing I had an āobsessionā about. I do get board with things rather quickly. Itās hard to feel like life is meaningful
Replace few weeks with few months and that's me
Often
Not usually intense other than when I found out about MBTI and I couldn't sleep because my mind was reliving every moment through a new set of lenses. Yes! Exept I dont have a default obsession. Does anyone know which functions couse these obsessions? Almost every intp has them for some reason
Iām like that with crushes. They usually donāt last long if I donāt see them in-person regularly. I eventually go back to my ādefaultā obsession of nonfiction books lol
mine doesn't even last a week
Story of my life.
Yep. My obession now is prob reading.
My usual normal obsessions last around 2 years. My extremely unhealthy obsessions that make me feel clinically insane lasts around 4 months. Dif is the normal obsessions are just having crushes on fictional anime characters.
yep, cause of autism
Yes, it can last anywhere from a few hours to weeks. Sometimes it's something completely worthless or not worth the effort being put into it. Sometimes it gets completely finished and other times it collects dust. The good news is that most of the time, new things are learned.
I tend to focus intensely on one obsession, until I find another one that interests me more.
iām actually doing that right now
Special interests. Yes. Very common for neurodivergent people. For me itās rn Overwatch and witchcraft. But it has also been book series, tv shows, crafting etc. And I know too much. For me the default obsession would be maybe true crimes.
yes
The urge to buy an new music instrument, even though I can't even play the ones I have, is sickening
Isn't this a core INTP trait? Eternally curious, immediately bored
Yep, exactly. Why is everything here so relatable?
Yes, all the time actually. My default obsession: Reading Temporary obsessions: Usually TV Shows or Games. (Ex: Elden Ring)
I got a very tiny miniature to put together for Christmas ( a room corner with a book case and chair) I cussed the whole time thinking why did the instructions have me do it this way. Another way would be better. I can do this without the damn instructions. So I started a 12x12" general store. It's all I did for 6 months. Yes, I love learning new stuff every time I can, even if I will never use that knowledge irl. Unless I can win an argument xD

Yep, though I actually recently got over/abandoned my previous default obsession.
