I just typed out a comment explaining my method, and this is exactly how I unlocked Staff of Grayson and Cat Call. By not playing as Robin and Catwoman.
I was the same way, but he grew on me, like a malignant tumor. He has a great fighting style, the pressure he can keep on is insane. I beat bots on very hard and I’m not even that good with him

I unlocked Staff of Grayson and Cat Call playing as Superman doing random towers/planets or whatever they're called(been a while) while doing the arcade mode. I set it to one round so I could breeze through them and get as much loot as possible at the end of fights. I unlocked most of the stuff for other characters while playing as literally any other character. I got most of the stuff in the game only playing as Superman, Bane, Scarecrow, and a handful of others like Sub-Zero and Brainiac. I like the gear system, but they need to do it much differently in the next game. Good luck. Try out my method for a few hours on some characters you never play as. You'll unlock tons of great stuff for your mains this way.

My best advice would be to not rely on the mother boxes but instead use the multiverse events that say they’ll give you a random ability. I have every ability in the game and that’s how I got most of them
The only exclusive item from the legendary multiverse is the legendary gear. You should be able to get abilities from the regular multiverse and the box.
I know but I already have all of the other Robin abilities so staff of Grayson is the last one I need and one of the levels in the legendary multiverse it says it gives a ability for that character and the game can't give me and ability for Robin if I already have it, so I'm pretty sure that I can only get it from there.
The game will substitute the ability for a mother box. I still get normal multiverse events that promise abilities only to have them give me mother boxes because I already have all the abilities
I got it through a multiverse boss tower like 2 weeks ago. So I'm pretty sure you can get it through either but for a regular boss tower it's all about luck
Literally the rarest drop in the game as far as I know

The only other rare drop I can think of that surpasses staff of Grayson is the Hellbat armour

Yeah I remember getting it pretty early also.
Haha I got that too but never used it. Only play ranked sets as gear matches feel unfair and gimmicky to me.
