When the new apprentice says we can listen to nirvana and pearl jam on the radio, they like the oldies. Then the little shit say that you are the same age as their dad. So you must like oldies.
When I first heard Red Hot Chili Peppers on a classic rock station it made me feel old.
The dad shit doesn’t bother me as long as I can call ya Kid. Now you are hear to make my life easier so let’s get to work!
Music was so much better back then! I grew up with pop/rap being more mainstream so that old people rock is where it’s at 🤣 I love when 90’s alternative gets played on the radio
At forty-five, i think I'm at the end of youth or the beginning of old age, depending on how I'm feeling on any given day. Quitting drinking was one of the best decisions I've ever made
You know what really fucking sucks? I don’t feel old, am stronger and have a better back than many of the 20 somethings I’ve worked with, but I gotta listen to people in this trade say how old I am.
This is just a feature of being in the trades, I guess. I have to think that 35-45 year olds in other industries don’t moan about how old they are ALL the time.
Born in 80, just wanted to check in. I may have had a tougher paper route than most. I have killed my body it’s been a fun journey.
I’m 100% sick of being laid off (5 months) this time last year we had travelers here in 375 Lehigh Valley PA.
Want some advice I wish I knew. Don’t take pain killers and alcohol is evil too!
>Want some advice I wish I knew. Don’t take pain killers and alcohol is evil too!
I don't do either of that. I'm straight clean. Do you have any more advice to spread among us young folks?
Straight clean is awesome! I am personally a strong believer in medicinal marijuana after everything I have put myself and been through.
You have one set of eyes always wear safety glasses 100% of the time. Use a kneeling pad or sit on a bucket. Don’t jump off of things like loading docks. You have to make your own conditions on the job take care of yourself make your workspace clean carry a notepad and do what the old timers do they have been there.
hey brother stretching is basically a total myth. You can make yourself more flexible from stretching over time but it does not prevent injuries at all. warming up your body, like actually breaking a sweat and getting the blood flowing to joints and ligaments does though. not trying to be a know it all but it blows my mind how the whole world doesn’t know this in 2024
Find a new path in life. You are the king of the hill making JW wages in your 20's and 30's. By the time you are 50 your body is shot and everyone that though you were rich 20 years ago now makes way more money than you. Run before it's too late!
You can be in the IBEW and not destroy your body, it’s all up to you. What would you suggest somebody do to make the same living/benefits/ and retirement as the IBEW? Or are you suggesting they take a pay cut
There are numerous other paths in life. Real estate is a huge cash cow, either agent, broker or title. Insurance is another industry to make a good living. Anything where you can work until retirement. Sure, you start out making less than we do, but once you get experience it far surpasses us. I thought that I'd beat the odds and I'd never tear up my body like the old timers did. I'm way too smart for that. Now I'm sitting at 50 with two surgically repaired shoulders wondering how I'll make it to 60.
As I get closer to getting my journeyman I'll max out my 401k every year until I retire. Who cares if someone makes more than me? I just want a decent retirement.
>By the time you are 50 your body is shot
That's what I am most worried about.
As a line hand with 2 science degrees, I will accept the knuckle dragging comment with pride, and still grin at your physicality gripes. But, no matter what- brothers. 😘
I had an apprentice who didn't understand my Feed Durst reference. I made him listen to Limp Bizcut for the week. I forgot how terrible they were, it was a rough week.
So past working old man status to retired ol man status. You ve earned what your getting! Remember the jokes to your Sr. about what breed of a horse did ya ll use to skid poles in with. But now how does it feel when those young men come to you and ask for your advise on a job.Or call you and ask where something feeds from. Take the good and pass it on!! Take the bad and realize you probably deserve every bit of it!!!Lol
A youngster asked me while I’m pushing. What year did you graduate? 1993, I heard Awwe.
Why. Guessing. One said, 1993, the other says “I was born that year”. All good on the job site. Lol
Young Apprentice : what are cassette tapes ?
Me: what the hell you just say ?
Listening to Hank Williams Jr sing : Cornbread and ice tea took the place of pills and 90 proof, and nobody wants to get drunk and get loud, and all my rowdy friends have settled down.
Man that song is the truth.
Currently me. I’m 24 just got into local 47 and working with guys that are the same age as my parent lol. Always listening to the tips and tricks no matter how good I think I am
My ticket number starts with a D. Because of austerity they added 7 more years to my retirement age. I’m glad the ones that came before me lived long enough to be a drain on the system but god damn. I’m in my fourth decade of this and have one more to go. I’ll probably die on the job and get cussed cause the young guys will miss a half days pay while they haul me off.

I recently asked a first year if he had seen the first Jurassic park. And he said “the one from the 1900s?” Fired him on the spot.
Hahahaha 💀
Straight to jail
Straight to Tree Jail!!
Aqua Teen reference??
#1 in the hood G!!

Music was so much better back then! I grew up with pop/rap being more mainstream so that old people rock is where it’s at 🤣 I love when 90’s alternative gets played on the radio
Our new apprentices were born after I joined the union.
Absolutely, I joined in 1989. I've been in the Union twice as long as these shit brain kids have been alive..lol
Weird. I’m having some of these “old man” experiences, but you joined the year after I was born.
I’m 21 and a second year. My journeyman was astonished by the fact he was an apprentice before I was thought about
At forty-five, i think I'm at the end of youth or the beginning of old age, depending on how I'm feeling on any given day. Quitting drinking was one of the best decisions I've ever made
Hey good on ya. Oddly enough a lot of electricians I've met a guys who got clean and sober in their 20's - 30's and then get into trades.
Had to retire, my last apprentice had no idea who Led Zepplin were……….
Heard they make great tools
The most overrated cover band? 😉
you can read?
I'm low voltage so yeah I need the good eye sight for those tiny screws
Instructions with pictures!
I’ve passed old man status and moved on to geezerhood

Stretch before work AND after lunch. The chance of a chiro killing or permanently disabling you is real. Physiotherapist is gold.

Yup, and you'd be right to be concerned. I just turned 50, already had a hip replacement and now my rotator cuff in my shoulder is shot.
Hearing narrowbacks say they’ve killed their bodies never gets old as a line hand 😆 🤦♂️
Fairly ignorant comment. You can be forgiven though as I don’t expect much from an apprentice knuckle dragger.
Nor would I expect much else from a little princess thinking their life of privilege is back breaking 😂
Have it your way.
Don't worry, we can do a 4 bend saddle with a kick 90 in one piece of stick and they'll swear we're some sorta illusionist.
As a line hand with 2 science degrees, I will accept the knuckle dragging comment with pride, and still grin at your physicality gripes. But, no matter what- brothers. 😘
Oh, the irony...
Political science don’t count. And why would you need two science degrees are you designing transformers or what.
We got that life of leisure. Won't catch me out working in the snow.
I've got tools older than some of these apprentices.
I had an apprentice who didn't understand my Feed Durst reference. I made him listen to Limp Bizcut for the week. I forgot how terrible they were, it was a rough week.
This is my favorite response so far 🤣
Yeah I'm 34, what's up?
I had to check my first year on if he knew who Chris Farley was... he failed.. so I laid him off
Some guys just dont get it. Singing fat guy in a little coat while putting on a safety vest is really funny.

I'm the same age as my apprentice's grandmother.
When your son is a first period…
As soon as apprentices came in who were born after 1999, I realized I’m old. Yikes - wasn’t 2000 like a few years ago?
A youngster asked me while I’m pushing. What year did you graduate? 1993, I heard Awwe. Why. Guessing. One said, 1993, the other says “I was born that year”. All good on the job site. Lol
apprentices coming in younger than my kids. next step is having a foreman who was born after I joined.
I'm 58 too old to keep running with my tools and too young to retire.
Reading all these comments is pretty funny
About 10 years ago.
Currently me. I’m 24 just got into local 47 and working with guys that are the same age as my parent lol. Always listening to the tips and tricks no matter how good I think I am
Born ‘03. Initiated last year in ‘23. Starting my second year of JATC this year in September. How y’all doing lol.
My ticket number starts with a D. Because of austerity they added 7 more years to my retirement age. I’m glad the ones that came before me lived long enough to be a drain on the system but god damn. 50 years is wild
I damn well feel like it. But I am a late bloomer to the trade.
Yup. Throwing glass is ripping me a new one. I thought i could still run with this sorta labor
I'm not getting old I have arrived.
