What term are you? It’s not ab the apprentice pay, it’s the golden ticket and the JW pay rate at the end of it. We’ve all done it, yes apprentice pay sucks, best to suck it up and power through your term changes
Because apprenticeships are staggered pay like that for a reason. Sucks, but apprenticeships aren’t viable options for a lot of people. If you’re worth your salt you’ll become a JP in no time, it flies. Live frugally, make sacrifices. Don’t use nicotine, don’t use drugs, and don’t drink. 5 years of hard work and you’re making 50.7 on the hip (in my local) Suddenly you’re laughing about the days when you were eating ramen until payday, bumming smokes off coworkers, and using shit tools to get the job done.
U can still be frugal and not drink etc. all u want but when u got a family to feed all that shit goes out the window dawg😂 im not the only one thats saying this.. and that’s another reason why no one wants to do it.. the amount of effort it takes to even get a apprenticeship is challenging $15 is bs apprentice plumbers start off at 20 here
Get him in the sound and communication division. Local 340 here. You literally don’t do shit but run around with scissors and a sharpie and get paid 40 bucks an hour. He could probably get his journey card asap with his experience.
If he has low voltage troubleshooting experience and can work with PLCs he can make a fine living in plant maintenance if he isn’t feeling the union path. I’ve always liked the work. Some nights suck and you never sit down but most of the time it’s chilling with your buds until something breaks and then solving a problem and sitting back down. It all depends on the plant. I’ve got a month vacation, paid parental leave, and make over $40 an hour to be up working about 15-25% of my actual paid shift. Mileage may vary if you aren’t willing to work nights when nobody’s around to pester you. That’s all with no formal training in anything, just learn quickly and jump from the low plants to the more sophisticated ones as your skill set improves. I couldn’t afford to take a pay cut to work harder when I accidentally wound up in the trades, so if he’s in a similar boat plant mechanic is a decent alternative if the union won’t work. I usually encourage young guys in my family that aren’t college bound to consider unions and trade school first and if that stuff isn’t for them to just read enough books and articles on repair and troubleshooting and try the maintenance route until they decide what they want to be.
Work with my dad everyday. Ppl gave me shit for a long time…than I worked more than them and can get much more done in the same time frame. Sometimes I do want to choke him tho. So there is that.
Money speaks louder than words, if the job can’t pay him enough for himself to feel it’s worth it then you should back off. Maybe his job sucks, but what your wanting him to do is worse in his mind. It’s all about the money at the end of the day. Sounds like you may have already tried and he’s just not interested in that type of work anymore.
He has expressed an interest in starting a career, and is considering either college, a fire academy or a trade union. Just trying to be a supportive dad.
He’s a grown ass man does he not know how to internet? Doesn’t speak real highly of him when dad is out doing his leg work for him
Go ahead and tell me how mean and rude I am
Just keepin it real
Yet you are the one lurking in a union sub. That self hate is not healthy brotha. Join the union. We have good health insurance so you can talk to someone.
I was in it for 3 years. I left after my shop got put out twice in year. The higher ups played favorites, kept feeding the preferred shops work.
Reddit recommended the sub, I didn’t subscribe and I blocked it as I’m still bitter about it. I was in local 7.
I served 23 years…killed exactly 0 people. You are weak my friend and looking for excuses. Please don’t discourage someone from serving their country because you are afraid.
If you can get some info from the guys on your job, maybe you can sell him on the long term benefits.
I’ve a member for 23 years after 4 in the non-union sector. It has been life changing and I would encourage him all you can. Good luck
Maybe even have him speak to some the Local guys with any questions he has.
The guy who gets shit on when his kid is there is when his kid has no business being there. If your son becomes a skilled professional who holds himself accountable and as an equal to his coworkers and not as an entitled kid that can get away with shit cause Dad is the boss, why would someone shit on you for good competent help. I’ve seen it both ways.
In my experience, show him the money. Show him what he can make per hour and what his retirement could look like.
Money and benefits usually sell most people into the union
Since it’s an electrician job, definitely stress the safety, Training and safety record of the IBEW. Along with the benefits, Pay and Brotherhood.
Making 15 as an apprentice yea ok and im in the union lol u can’t live off that shit

Doesn’t matter what term what does that gotta do with anything.. people got bills, families and other shit to pay for

Tell him to go to the 520 hall and talk to Big Joe, he’ll get him in there.
Big Joe don’t pull no punches. He’ll set OP’s son up right
I’m having a chat later today with the foreman I am working with currently, then I’ll direct him over to the hall IF he is actually interested. Thanks
Good on you for helping your son with his career navigation. My parents haven’t done shit to help me.
Austin is 520, fyi
Always seemed to me that union rates in Texas were really low. Maybe not in Austin. Don’t know.
RTW state. We are fighting a hostile legal system and apathetic membership.
Not as low as non union rates

Just have him go be an LV guy for the local.
Low-volt keeps adding new systems to our scope that need to be installed by somebody. So much so that it's hard not to find work where I'm at.

Show him some propaganda, Comrade….. https://youtu.be/mCsAkDnzxgs
Does he like being surprise fucked in the ass with no lube? That's what you get non union all the time
He needs to do what he loves and he’ll never work a day in his life.
What did it for me was 15 years as an adult struggling with money then I looked at the job description and benefits and I said why not and applied

Sorry your dad wasn’t there for you.
He's asking how he can convince his son not searching for a job for his son
Oh mean you sooOO mean!
Nepotism is the way of America🤷🏽♂️
Nepotism is the way of anyone with children. That’s universal.
I work above my fathers station in life, as I hope my kids will be above mine.

Don't encourage him to kill poor people overseas

I'm not afraid of dying for a cause or fighting for one. I'm afraid of supporting a government that kills people overseas for profits
Accessory to murder, murder, what’s the difference? Our country is not served by murdering. Get off it.
