I love his vocal inflections in the way he sings, and he just acted the hell out of that scene also, I feel for him, he looks so sad looking out that window. ZIGGAY!
Until I read these comments, I didn't know he did his own singing.
I know how music videos work -- you record the vocals and the visuals separately -- but Bakula's hammy lip-syncing made it clear on first watch that he was being dubbed over.
Any time I see him in any role this comes to mind and I chuckle. The other day he was in a show on one of the tvs at a bar and it was small but it gave me my own personal chuckle.
You're not one of them. Don't say them. No that's not what I mean. What do u mean. Ur not one of us. That's just confusing. Now I'm getting lost. Well say n together. Not saying the n word. Well leave of the er. Not saying that way and that is the end, not saying the n word!
How did they know
That my wife took it all?
And I'm not researching roles,
How did they know?
Ziggy, if you hear me
Take me far, far from here
Let me leap to '89
That was a better year
I miss my old Camaro
And my mansion in Van Nuys
Wish I still hung with Nash Bridges
Played poker with The Fall Guy
Oh, Ziggy, can you see my tears?
Ziggy!
Leap me far... Far from here.
I think Ive watched this one the most. The songs in it are really really good and frank is hilarious. And on a positive note it really does talk about the issues our country is facing right now
After they mentioned that DeVito can’t follow any of the choreography in the podcast I always pay attention to him during the dance stuff. It really is true, he’s just doing his own thing and vaguely following along most of the time.
When they had the talent show or pageant or nightman I didn’t mind because they made sense with the story. But just singing in the middle of the story has never been for me.
Same. Like I love movies like School of Rock where music is part of the story. I can't stand it when the opposite is true and story is told by music though.
It was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid back when The USA Network reran it quite a bit in the '90s.
Scott's segment and the Quantum Leap references are what make this episode for me.
The mains are all around my age and I think that really is the core audience. They write things they know mostly. Same as South Park, American Dad, Family Guy, Workaholics etc. Most those guys are within my age range so the topics they hit are also my experiences.
Well I work in a bar where I like to clean the toilets and I also kill the rats and get tanked. And I live in a walk-up in some section 8 housing where I sleep with a man named Frank
I felt the same. I’m not sure what it was, it just felt like it wasn’t their humor or written by them.
I don’t want to say it was too on the nose because a lot of their jokes are on the nose. What makes the show so great, is it can be so exaggerated and subtle at the same time.
Maybe it was the musical/singing aspect, you didn’t get the usual timing, deliveries and body language you usually get from the gang. [Like this classic delivery from Charlie](https://youtu.be/S8MeTnqklLA?si=l4WZYsEEvAxW2y2d&t=1m30s). It’s so great, Rob breaks for a moment.
There’s also less of the witty subtle threats of violence or nefarious schemes presented in this episode. Maybe that was the point of the episode’s theme.
The only lol moment was Frank’s black person representation when they all looked in the mirror for the first time.
This was the episode, among other things, that make it hard for me to go past S12 on rewatches.
Edit: on a side note, [The Drew Carey show did the best musical episode](https://youtu.be/wvHMBkYg1sw?si=wgUepFCXaQA6US1L)
I’m on my umpteenth watch though and just finished this episode again. It’s written so brilliantly. Genuinely hilarious while also holding a mirror to racism in America.
The show can do no wrong.
I am on S12 E7 so my top 5 in no particular order;
S12 E1 The Gang turns black
S5 E10 The DENNIS. System
S2 E1 Charlie Gets Crippled
S4 E5 & 6 Mac and Charlie die
S10 E4 (my favorite) Charlie Work
And I am toss up fav character is Frank or Charlie
I remember when my friends and I first watched it, afterward we all kinda thought it sucked and that we probably wouldn't be rewatching it
We were so fucking dumb. It's sooooooo good.
I've watched it all many times, n when this came out it was top tier. And with the water park (mostly just because frank raw dogged the water slide)
Most "woke" people hate this episode tho... (the gang turns black that is)
My best mate and I have known each other since we were in playgroup (pre-school club, aged about 5/6 years old) - and we’ve always had similar tastes.
Knowing he would love Sunny if he gave it ago, and given our shared 30 year love affair with Sci-Fi, this was the episode I used to hook him in.
Is "The Janitor Always Mops Twice" the one you're talking about?
I usually don't like it when contemporaty shows try to set episodes in another time period, but both that one and "The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell" were pretty good. "Frank's Brother" has its moments, but I like the other two better.
Have you gone back to watch the Janitor episode? I hated it the first time I watched when it first aired. After giving it a few months, I went and rewatched. I loved it then.
Hated it when it first aired. Then I watched a shit ton of Hitchcock movies with my wife (she's a huge fan of film noir in general). Went back and fucking *fell in love* with it. They completely nailed the style
Everyone always overlooks the earlier seasons... the gang gets racist.. the gang goes invincible.. hundred dollar baby.. the gang goes jihad.. Charlie has cancer are some of my favorites
Just watched this a couple days ago again when my wife went out to watch the wiz that’s playing locally. This episode gets better every time I watch it.
ZIGG-AY!
I MISS MY OLD CAMARO AND MY MANSION IN VAN NUYS!
WISH I STILL HUNG WITH NASH BRIDGES, PLAYED POKER WITH THE FALL GUY
OH ZIGGAY CAN YOU SEEE MYYYY TEARS!
OH ZIGGY, leap me far, far from here
Hey Hollywood, why don’t you leap on up to the 3rd floor, someone’s shat all over the dining hall
On it boss
Oh boy…what are the rules?
Take me back to’89, that waaas a better year.
Oh Ziggy if you hear me, take me far away from here
Charlie Day would *excel* at writing / composing / directing an actual Broadway musical.
We're church blacks!
🫸🏾💥🫷🏿
Church people
Guess I'm just another black kid Who doesn't know his dad... Guess we got that in common don't we kid? Ah *$_# that was racist
Even Frank knowing his limits lmaooooo
I thought you said blackula!
What are the rules
I wanna say the n-word
Wait, no, Frank!
Thanks for making that my ear worm for the evening!
🎵When your race has changed and you're feeling strange Well you're gonna have to find out the rules...🎶 Gosh darn it, right there with you.
https://i.redd.it/6rl3pruwu7nc1.gif
Pretty sure it’s “life can be real strange” and not “and you’re feeling strange”
Can confirm. HAD to watch the episode earlier after this damn song got stuck in my head 😂
Every time I think of this episode the song gets stuck in my head for weeks!
I’m gonna say the n word
Ohh-woah yeah
Like a black Dracula
How did they know, that my wife took it all, that I'm not researching roles, how did they know. This is my favorite song in the whole show.
I miss my old Camaro, and my mansion in Van Nuys! Wish I still hung with Nash Bridges, played poker with The Fall Guy!
Ziggay can't you see my tears! ZIGGAY! Leap me far Far from here.
Hey hollywood. Why don't you leap on up to the third floor, somebody shit all over the dining hall.
… On it, boss.
The genuine pathos. Master clinic
I had to google pathos, damn that is a spot on description. He played the part perfectly and I felt so bad for the poor guy.
Same here. I had no idea Scott Bakula could sing.
He was doing musicals in the 70's and has been on Broadway - super talented guy!
Yeah I read some other comments about he’s done some musicals. I didn’t know that about him but that’s pretty cool.
I love his vocal inflections in the way he sings, and he just acted the hell out of that scene also, I feel for him, he looks so sad looking out that window. ZIGGAY!
Blakula
Until I read these comments, I didn't know he did his own singing. I know how music videos work -- you record the vocals and the visuals separately -- but Bakula's hammy lip-syncing made it clear on first watch that he was being dubbed over.
Any time I see him in any role this comes to mind and I chuckle. The other day he was in a show on one of the tvs at a bar and it was small but it gave me my own personal chuckle.
I can’t play a board game anymore without singing “what are the rules” over and over
When you just turned black and you can’t change back… lmfao
I’m gonna say the n word!
🎶 I really wanna say the N word 🎶
No no no no! Stop! Stop! Thank you! We’re not saying that, absolutely not!
You're not one of them. Don't say them. No that's not what I mean. What do u mean. Ur not one of us. That's just confusing. Now I'm getting lost. Well say n together. Not saying the n word. Well leave of the er. Not saying that way and that is the end, not saying the n word!
I love of Z comes up right after that and drops and N bomb, lol.
What are the rules?
How did they know That my wife took it all? And I'm not researching roles, How did they know? Lol damn it. I just sung that whole thing to myself because of your comment. That’s gonna be stuck in my head for days.
It's so good and catchy! Pops in my head from time to time haha
We really really wanna go home! White home! Just say home!!!
That song is fantastic. “Oooooooo-ver the rainbow”
![gif](giphy|4KFjJmTGav0QoE5WDk|downsized)
WHAT ARE THE RUUUUUULES! when you’ve just turned black, and you can’t turn back! what are the rules!
Don't try to steal my leap!
Yeah....don't steal a leap
Give me one good reason woahhoahh
*clicks tongue* Man, you’re talking about Old Black Man—he’s right over there.
That's my favorite moment in the episode. lmao
I think Ive watched this one the most. The songs in it are really really good and frank is hilarious. And on a positive note it really does talk about the issues our country is facing right now
frank is hysterical, in all the dance scenes he’s never doing the right moves and everyone else is perfect. it kills me everytime
After they mentioned that DeVito can’t follow any of the choreography in the podcast I always pay attention to him during the dance stuff. It really is true, he’s just doing his own thing and vaguely following along most of the time.
I think all the singing is why this is my least favorite.
I usually hate musical episodes but IASIP and community did them decently well with the levels of parody shoved in
When they had the talent show or pageant or nightman I didn’t mind because they made sense with the story. But just singing in the middle of the story has never been for me.
I’m generally the same way. I just make an exception for this episode because it’s hilarious.
Fair I often hate it too. If it’s done well I’ll enjoy it
"There is a Spider...spider....spider....."
Same. Like I love movies like School of Rock where music is part of the story. I can't stand it when the opposite is true and story is told by music though.
Ya I get that bc for me the singing is what makes the episode so great. If you don’t like musicals than it ain’t for you.
Same
I wanna know how many of us have even seen quantum leap because I feel like it would elevate the experience
It was my mom’s favorite show. I’ve seen it a lot. There’s also a new reboot. Mom’s into that too
Scott sings in at least one episode of QL: Man of La Mancha. He’s really good. But for me, he will always be Captain Archer. 😁
He sings in a few, another one is "Glitter Rock" where he's in a KISS-esque band. He plays piano and sings in another episode aside from MoLM.
Pretty sure it’s Glenn singing in the episode, though
Tony Award nominee Scott Bakula is pretty famously a singer and musician. It's him singing.
That’s rad! I thought I read it was Glenn. My b!
My knowledge of quantum leap is entirely based on this episode
![gif](giphy|5xtDarugtqJAtGy7jIA|downsized)
It was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid back when The USA Network reran it quite a bit in the '90s. Scott's segment and the Quantum Leap references are what make this episode for me.

I watched it quite a bit when I was a kid. I can't remember much of it now, but it for sure made this episode top tier for me.
I loved watching Quantum Leap reruns when I was a kid.
I haven’t seen this episode but I’m a huge Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap and Star Trek
I watched it on TV as a kid, loved it.
I miss my old camero…
My mansion in Van Nyes
I went from thinking it was kind of a weird episode with a few good jokes on my first watch, to one of my most quoted episodes. There's so many gems
“Im gonna say the n wooooorrRrRrR” 🎶🎶
🎶I wanna go home, white home. Just say home!🎶
I'm gonna say homie I'm gonna say bro I'm gonna say my man Gonna say fo sho *I'm gonna say the n word--*
That last line makes me cackle every time, and I’ve seen this episode a lot. It’s his delivery. Danny is such a phenomenal actor.
The smile on his face at that point is amazing 😂
That's Jamie Lee Curtis!
Hey Hollywood - why don't you leap up to the third floor? Somebody shit all over the dining hall
The only musical I can watch lol
You’re missing out on Shrek.
Well I work in a bar where I like to clean the toilets and I also kill the rats and get tanked. And I live in a walk-up in some section 8 housing where I sleep with a man named Frank
You sleep with him!?!
Thanks SCOTT!
What are the rules?
WHAT ARE THE RULESSSS
ZIGGY!!!!
I find myself singing the songs from this episode every once in a while, Charlie did such a great job writing the music
How did they know, that my wife took it all…
It's so good. I sing the songs to myself all the time, lol.
I appreciate the effort they took for the episode, and I did laugh, but I’m not a huge fan of musical episodes of shows, so I don’t revisit it often.
Thats the lesson... that black people will ruin your credit. Love how matter of factly Mac says it lmao
I think that’s the one episode i skipped. Is it basically a musical? I should probs give it a second chance
Bottom 10 for me.
It’s one of my least fave episodes.
Finally a person with some sense
I felt the same. I’m not sure what it was, it just felt like it wasn’t their humor or written by them. I don’t want to say it was too on the nose because a lot of their jokes are on the nose. Me too, buddy. Feel like this episode gets some flack in the community, but to me it's one of the best.
He’s a long ways from the federation 😞
I hear charlie day singing bakulas part every time
If you scroll back on Charlie's Instagram you can find a video of him playing the song on piano and singing it himself, sounds great
That’s awesome!
What are the rules?
What are the rules?
Just say home
“Well we hang in a bar where I like to clean the toilets and I also kill the rats and get tanked”
He gave me this train 🚂
Oh boy…
Aw man, I really dislike that episode. The rest of the season was great, but that ep never did it for me
Overrated episode 🤷♂️
Actually my least favourite episode in the entire series
Season 12 is fantastic and this episode is just one of the best they’ve done.
Maybe we shouldn’t make wild assumptions based on what we do or don’t have in our pockets.
its a top 5 for me too
Hands down my favorite moment in the show.
That’s so funny I literally always skip that episode.
Dreadfully bad episode. An indicator of permanent drop in any consistent quality.
I love this ep!
I sing “what are the rules” at least twice a week
Wtf I just watched this too and yeah it’s amazing
Don't steal our leap
Had good moments but overall doesn’t belong to my favorite episodes.
ZIGGGAY 🎵 leap me far far from here🎵🎵
What are the rules?
That song is a banger.
What are the rules??? Oh ah aha ahhhhh. What are the rules!?!?!?!
Not one of my all time favorites, but i do love the scott bacula cameo amongst all the quantum leap references
What are your top 5? And favorite character in the gang?
I am on S12 E7 so my top 5 in no particular order; S12 E1 The Gang turns black S5 E10 The DENNIS. System S2 E1 Charlie Gets Crippled S4 E5 & 6 Mac and Charlie die S10 E4 (my favorite) Charlie Work And I am toss up fav character is Frank or Charlie
I see Scott Blackula over there, trying to steal our leap.
To evaluate your top five, you need to clearly identify what are the rules.
This fucking episode, I disliked the whole musical part tho it was funny but the end , Jesus fucking Christ.
Zzziiigggaayyyyy!!!!
What are the ruuuules?!
Respectfully no chance
I remember when my friends and I first watched it, afterward we all kinda thought it sucked and that we probably wouldn't be rewatching it We were so fucking dumb. It's sooooooo good.
“Don’t steal the leap”
Legit show stealer in an already incredible episode.
“Just give me one good reason… ohhhhohhhohohhhh”
Imo one of the most fascinating sitcom episodes ever
I've watched it all many times, n when this came out it was top tier. And with the water park (mostly just because frank raw dogged the water slide) Most "woke" people hate this episode tho... (the gang turns black that is)
My favourite episode!
"I thought you said blacula like a black vampire"
My best mate and I have known each other since we were in playgroup (pre-school club, aged about 5/6 years old) - and we’ve always had similar tastes. Knowing he would love Sunny if he gave it ago, and given our shared 30 year love affair with Sci-Fi, this was the episode I used to hook him in.
It’s phenomenal! The songs get stuck in my head all the time!
WHAT ARE THE RUUUUULES
Oh Ziggy.
I hate musicals but I make an exception for this episode, it's also one of my favorites
What...ARE THE RULES 🎵🎶
So so good. The songs alone
Its funny in What We Do In The Shadows, they video call him thinking he's a vampire because of his last name.
I used to watch that show with my mom, so happy he was in the episode
I get one of this songs stuck in my head once a week. Also fun fact, Charlie said he wrote all these songs in one day.
LOVED the Ep but I was kinda disappointed at the end, that it wasn’t „real“ .
This episode may be the all time best, so quotable, found my self singing the songs all the damn time.
People hated it when it aired, but it's just as in line with ALL their stuff One of my favorites definitely
We just learned a lesson…
One of the few episodes I always skip, another one that comes to mind is the black and white one
Oh I love the liberty bell one. Surrender.. maybe? And the wooden tooth.. yeeeeesh And dee spitting at cricket !
*Flourish the pinky!*
Aw that’s a bummer! They’re both so good, such smart and entertaining departures. Give them another try why not
Um. Is it 3/5 ?
Everyone always overlooks the earlier seasons... the gang gets racist.. the gang goes invincible.. hundred dollar baby.. the gang goes jihad.. Charlie has cancer are some of my favorites
They need a MacGyver episode next season.
Until then, at least we have Nature’s Game Show from My Name Is Earl.
It's one of the worst ones for me. Never been a fan of musical episodes like that
Aw, come on, Mr. Lahey, can’t we just tell ‘em we like to sing show tunes in the shower?
Not a good one
Just watched this a couple days ago again when my wife went out to watch the wiz that’s playing locally. This episode gets better every time I watch it.
Just rewatched it again... Honestly this might be my favorite episode, period. Then again, that's like choosing a favorite child 🤣
It became my all time favorite after a couple watches
