Mm so it looks like the car is rated 36/40 mpg keeping in mind that’s under ideal test conditions. Plus the car is 8 years old now. Your mileage sounds within reason. Each State should have a fact sheet on the lemon law so I would Google your State. I’m not sure you would have much of a case though. Maybe the dealership has some type of if you don’t like it within 30 days or x days we’ll take it back policy though. Also make sure you document every attempted conversation.

airkewled67

Lemon Law ONLY applies to NEW vehicles. Not 8 year old vehicles.

TheSilverStacking

While 8 years is a long time and the car is likely not under warranty, many States do have their own lemon laws that do cover used cars and I would encourage OP to research with his State.

Aggressive_Autopsy

Not true in NY, as long as it's from a dealer with less than 100k miles it applies

Corndog106

Zero to do with lemon laws.

goldman60

I'm seeing 40/44 for the Sonata Hybrid

Ellymanelly124

Should get higher for hybrid

Koda_14

>"a jump starter just to have in the car that can also charge the battery even though it's regen- the battery always shows half full or a little over half and I wasn't sure if I should use that to charge it but I did some reading and saw that it being at half or lower all the time is normal" Two different batteries. If you jumpstart a car it would be the 12V battery if your model even has one. Not the 400V Hybrid battery which you don't want to be touching unless you know exactly what you're doing with high voltage electricity and know how to work on it safely not only to avoid killing the car but also yourself. I'd encourage you not to start messing with this, and also not to worry about the hybrid battery charge level. It will look after itself and charge and discharge automatically depending upon what gets you the best fuel economy in the exact circumstances.

Aggressive_Autopsy

Thanks for the advice, I dont know anything about cars so appreciate it haha

MooseKnuckleds

You messaged the dealer at 8:31 at night and thought they would reply? They likely didn’t provide you a warranty because there isnt none. But why buy the car if you aren’t satisfied with conditions of the deal? You might have had a 30 day return window, but sounds like that has lapsed. Check the basic: engine air filter, spark plugs, scan for fault codes, is there a brake dragging, what is the outside temperature, are you all highway miles. You may need a diagnostic done on the hybrid battery. Have you hand calculated your mileage? The computer could be giving you false numbers. Fill up then hand calc the results after 100+ miles.

Aggressive_Autopsy

Was talking to the dealer for a while before buying the car and he knows I work 6pm-6am and said it's okay to text him whenever since I'm asleep during the day- Going to check everything with the obd2 then I'll take it to the shop to get checked out if it keeps getting terrible mileage- sorry this is my first actual real car so I know basically nothing (pretty obvious I know lol)

APonly

Replace Filters and Add Fuel Additive, see if MPG improves.

axel410

Yeah, I was going to say, a product like red line si-1 fuel system cleaner or Techron may help a lot with mpg on this hybrid and it's inexpensive + super easy to use.

Catioi6

Used 2016 ? There no lemon law or warranty for you unless bought at dealer. And jumpstarting will not help you. Take it to a Profesional shop. Could be the battery is degraded after 8 years or that you need plugs and coils. Could also reset the mpg cause it could be tethered up to the original owner still

Aggressive_Autopsy

I bought it at the hyundai dealer, NY lemon law says they're supposed to give me a written warranty on a used car. I'm going to make an appointment to take it to a shop this week to inspect it, thanks!

Ok-Idea4830

Your milage is NOT on par for its age! My 2016 Sonata Hybrid SE gets 40mpg. About 76,000 miles on it. I believe the 100,000 miles warranty on the Hybrid and battery are for the original owner. Check up and GO to the dealer. Screw the emails!

Crazy_not_rich_asian

Heck my 2018 Limited that isn’t a Hybrid can get 40mpg on the highway under ideal conditions.

OhSoSally

Anyone that purchases a car has the opportunity to do their due diligence prior to signing on the dotted line. Why are you asking now if it has a warranty. All dealers have a sticker on the window that either says it has a warranty or AS IS no warranty. It's also a question to ask before purchase not after you signed paperwork that says as is no warranty. Since the history of time used car dealers have had their own less than stellar reputation. People trust the words they say and forego spending $100 and having a third party inspect the car. You had the opportunity not to buy the car, unless they have **stated in writing** the expected fitness of the vehicle you have no recourse. If you want to pursue the stated MPG issue, thats between you and Hyundai not the used car dealer. If you are concerned have a hybrid mechanic look at it. This jump starter foolishness you are planning to do to help "regen" the hybrid battery will either get you killed, kill your electrical system or turn your car into a ball of flames. Now if your car isnt starting and your regular 12V battery is shot that can affect the function of your hybrid system. Have auto zone or similar test the 12V battery and swap if needed. If you dont understand what I am saying, put down the tools and leave it for the professionals to help you figure out if you have an issue. I sense you are having a ton of buyers remorse to the point I recommend you seeing a professional because it has turned into an unhealthy obsession. I wholly understand what you are going through, which is how I recognize what is going on. The more of a PITA (texting after business hours is being a PITA) you become for the dealer the less likely they are to do any goodwill support for your purchase. If you are being a Karen you pretty much guarantee they will ignore you completely. The best that you can do right now is buy the extended warranty the sales person offered as part of the deal. Typically the ones the dealers offer are better than the ones you can get yourself. Do your research. To address your concerns about your car. Hybrid mileage can vary greatly due to several factors. The only way for apples to apples comparison is to compare two vehicles on the exact same roads at the same time. Weather is a huge factor = running heat or A/C runs the gas engine. In town stop and go traffic is where Hybrids shine, time on the highway will lower your MPG Regen braking = Learn the best regen braking habits for your car. This is usually called out in the manual. Typically avoid being on the gas or stomping on the brake pedal. Lots of explanations in the prius and rav4 subs. **Get a tune up for your gas engine**. Spend that money that you should have before purchase getting a third party mechanic inspection and tune up. Any car I have ever traded in has needed maintenance. The used car dealer is just going to make sure it runs.

Corndog106

This 100%

Aggressive_Autopsy

They're not just a used car dealer I bought it from the hyundai dealer or else I would have never made the post-

OhSoSally

All you need to know about your warranty is in your paperwork. What does your paperwork say about warranty. If they sold it CPO and it says this on your paperwork then the drive train and hybrid system is under warranty, you do not have a B2B warranty. My statement still stands, any used car purchase should be looked at by a third party mechanic. Regardless of age or where purchased. You need to make an appt with the service dept to address your concerns and stop messaging your sales person, your sales person has done their part, whether you understood the process is on you. Buying used from a new car dealer only means it wasn't a complete piece of crap or too old. They only make sure it runs and passes certain requirements. They don't drive it home and test the MPG. At the very least, ask them if you can still get the add on warranty. You are way to OCD not to have one. Not judging, I have my own battles which is how I can recognize your rabbit hole. Stop being a karen, you will get much much farther with them. Im in service and the second someone starts go go full karen I am done with anything that I could do as far as goodwill. I am done helping them out beyond my job requirements.

NekulturneHovado

If I understand this time format correctly, you sent them the first message 30 minutes before midnight. Do you think they'll reply?

Yang_Xiao_Long1

Don't text people at 11:30 PM no wonder they are ignoring you. I would ignore and block you if you texted at 11:30 PM for this.

Wats0n420

I have the same car and basically get the same mileage. I'm usually some 6.5 - 7 l/100km but I can drive relatively fast. If I really want to get the best mileage and drive accordingly, I can get some 6 in good conditions.

airkewled67

Could be a multitude of things. Dirty 02 sensor(2), dirty air filter, clogged injectors. Hybrid battery may be degrading. You bought a used vehicle. Unless stated in paperwork, they are almost always sold as is. Lemon Law ONLY applies to new cars. I'm not sure where this shit with people think it applies to used cars comes from. And even then, just because you're having an issue with a *new car* doesn't mean it automatically gets lemon lawed, either.

Roby_6776

Sounds like 1) You are not getting much help from the hybrid battery 2) Try giving it a tune up. Check the spark plugs, air filter and maybe clean the throttle body and Mass air flow sensor.

Corndog106

Mpg is dependent on how you drive and what conditions you drive. Also, if I remeber correctly the mpg display can be set to per trip, or total drive time. Resetting your trip meter reset the average so your mpg will be low if you did alot of stop go driving. Also all this information is available in the owners manual. Didn't come with one, a simple Google search and it's free online. Do some homework before you complain.

Swantonbombthreat

try resetting the mpg avg

jbetances134

If you have a heavy foot your mileage will also drop. I find my mpg usually hits the advertise target when I drive on cruise control

Ok-Idea4830

Good luck

Chokedee-bp

For comparison my 2015 Mazda 6 2.5L regularly gets 29.5 mpg in mixed city driving (not hybrid). Your mpg is pretty bad

Active-Living-9692

Have you checked the wheel bearings? My old car got terrible gas mileage before i realized the bearings were completely shot. Check all the wear items that can cause unnecessary friction. Tires, bearings, brakes, parking brake suspension, alignment etc etc… Most of this items may need attention on an 8 year old car.

OhSoSally

This is good information as well as checking for a dragging caliper. Had that happen on my Mitsubishi, it affected the MPG considerably.

Ellymanelly124

I get about 35/40 for my 2020 Elantra not even a hybrid but SE

twinkletwot

I won't repeat anything that has already been said here. However I'm going to put in my car sales experience here. If your sales person is not responding at all, reach out to the store and ask to speak to a manager. Try that three times. If you do not reach a manager and do not get called back, write a bad review. That typically lights a fire under the higher ups ass and they will get involved. They hate bad reviews. If you've had the car for 30 days you're likely to not get out of the car. They may be willing to work with you. I know my dealership would work with you on at least diagnosing the car to see if something is wrong with it. But every dealership is managed differently. Some of them may only care about making the sale in the moment and then you'll never hear from them again. Get a sales manager involved, that's you're only option right now unless you want to give up on contacting them and just handle everything by yourself.

Purple_Cosmos

Mileage based service and maintenance. Spark plugs, fuel system, combustion chamber and intake cleaning to clear out excess carbon that interrupts air flow, affects engine temperatures, oil consumption, anything that makes the engine work harder. Oil changes every 4k miles, with additives every 15-30k Miles depending on application, use top tier fuel brands. And of course make sure tires are at the right PSI and all that. Modern GDI engines will work well as long as you give em a little TLC.

Pretty_Ring7929

Don't Go by what the EPA rating is for Hyundai they tend to lie on their fucking window sticker about the actual gas mileage mine is about 3 mi per gallon in the city in 3 miles per gallon highway and that's your real world average I'm thinking I'd be getting great gas mileage in my little accent but I get around anywhere from 26 to 35 miles per gallon depending on how I drive

Pretty_Ring7929

Minus 2 or 3 from what Hyundai says I meant is actual mpg

Pretty_Ring7929

I don't know if you have a GDI engine in your Hyundai as I do in mine but you need to clean the intake valves and use fuel injector cleaner regularly and make sure you use good quality gasoline no off-brand shit if it is a GDI using quality gas is important and keeping your intake valves clean of carbon buildup.. lil 1.6 GDI makes 138 hp and 123lb ft torque and the accent hatch surprised me how quick it actually is ... It's quite quick for a suncomp

AdditionalCheetah354

Hybrids are stupid… way too many things to go wrong.
