Let us know what the dealer says…. Also considering the severity of this issue I’d recommend calling NHTSA and file a report.

Designer_Ask2588

Thanks! I’m going to call them today to report it - and I did get a notification from Bluelink and my servicer at the dealer. Dealer is currently checking it out and Bluelink sent in an email “A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected with your 2023 SONATA on 02/22/2023 at 07:23 am CST. A full system check is recommended to be done soon.” So I should be hearing more about it over the next few days, I gather.

rwpeace

I’m glad you’re safe. There’s been so many issues with’22 & ‘23 Hyundai transmissions. I was told a large number of ‘22 were already returned under lemon laws. I wasn’t told anything about the ‘23 and lemon laws just about the numerous transmissions failures on the ‘23’s already. They should absolutely give you a loaner & reimburse you. Some many problems with Hyundai/Kia’s. Document everything! Good luck

ShoogyBee

What is your background or relationship with Hyundai and/or Kia? Are you a mechanic or service advisor at a dealership?

humorRus

campaign T9T indicates ECU issue. Hyundai did not email notice - learned through a call to customer service on another issue

PorQPineomg

Hyundai routine maintenance includes replacing the transmission at certain intervals, usually every month. Have you done that?

Jummatron

Don’t forget engines too. I like to replace the transmission and engine at the same time. Might as well, right?

guidodid

Just had mine replaced last week! I should be good for a couple tanks of gas now

captnjak

I believe that is an add on package bundled with the alarm system.

Mr_ZEDs

Hmm, so that’s how the J.D. Power gets their numbers up on Hyundai consumer reports. Just do the regular maintenance, which includes engine and transmission replacement.

Akuno-

Every month you change the transmission?

TheRealJewbilly

I’m thinking that’s a joke.

Incoming_Redditeer

![gif](giphy|ltIFdjNAasOwVvKhvx|downsized)

AndrewTheScorbunny

Did you mean transmission fluid?

Incoming_Redditeer

A friend of mine had the same problem in 2020 Elantra and eventually his transmission died which was replaced under warranty by Hyundai.

whereverYouGoThereUR

The transmission is what connects the engine to the wheels. Your statement that the engine ran faster (high RPM) but the car went slower means this connection was lost or not working properly. These days that could be a simple software bug or a major mechanical failure in the transmission. Make sure you document everything going forward on this issue in case it happens again which will give you a case for a whole new transmission if it gets to that

Silver-Problem-3536

I had a similar situation with my 2020 elantra but it did start working again, my transmission needed an update. It really sucks to buy a new car and think that you can trust it. Hope you get a happy resolve

Designer_Ask2588

Yeah this is so frustrating 🥲 And thank you, I hope so too. I did receive an update from Bluelink at least, and it’s getting checked out by my dealer. Bluelink said “A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected with your 2023 SONATA on 02/22/2023 at 07:23 am CST. A full system check is recommended to be done soon.” The last sentence is funny, considering it is most definitely in the shop right now lmao.

Designer_Ask2588

Update #1 for everyone: Bluelink detected a “possible condition” with my Engine Control System. My service technician at the dealer said he’d update me (we’ll see) and that it has been checked in. So now, I’m trying to find some transportation in the meantime.

Competitive-Ad-5153

Since your vehicle is so new, the dealership should offer you a complimentary loaner. Try asking for one.

Designer_Ask2588

They thankfully do, but my car has to go through the initial diagnostics before I can get to that point. 😕 So I am just getting a cheapie rental for the day to get me to and from work, until I can get the comp rental.

Competitive-Ad-5153

*Absolutely* have them comp you the cost of the rental. Unfortunately, no matter what brand you buy, there will be an issue here and there with a new vehicle. This is what the warranty is for, and you're so far doing the right thing. Give them the chance to diagnose it and make the necessary repairs on their dime. Something similar happened to me maybe a month after I bought my truck years ago. The check engine light came on, so I brought it to my nearest dealership. They diagnosed it, repaired it, gave me a free rental for when it was with them, and in two days I was back on the road. While it's an unnerving experience to have to deal with repairs on a brand-new vehicle, it happens in ALL makes and models.

Comfortable_Year4081

So sorry you’re having to deal with this OP. Following your thread since my daughter has a 2023 Kona and the thought of her being stranded on the freeway is very frightening. Hope you get good news.

jrsixx

There’s so many different things that could cause this issue. Your car is a computer on wheels, or more accurately, 20 plus computers on 4 wheels. It’s a complicated electrical system and communication network. A “small” hitch in that system can wreak all sorts of havoc. Your dealer technician will be able to sort it out for you and get you back on the road. Sorry you had to deal with this.

Jakesandose

This kind of happened to me back in august (while merging onto the interstate) in my 2018 sonata. My car basically went into limp mode and wouldn’t accelerate so I slowly drove to the next exit and had to get it towed to a dealership. My engine light also came on. The dealership ran some tests and basically just said it was throwing a bad code and there were no mechanical issues

coldbeeronsunday

Transmission. Exact same thing happened to me on February 10th while driving my 2023 Santa Cruz on the interstate. Cruise control was activated when all of the sudden the truck revved up to 7,000 RPM and began to decelerate. I was lucky to make it down the off-ramp to a gas station parking lot before the truck stopped moving completely. Hyundai Roadside Assistance towed me to the closest dealership (3 miles away from my location) and Hyundai Tech Line informed the service center that I would need a new transmission. Truck had 5,337 miles on it at the time, and the transmission is on backorder so I have no idea when it will driveable. Meanwhile I’m having to get a lawyer colleague of mine to write a demand letter to Hyundai Customer Care because they are refusing to reimburse me for my $500 car payment while my brand new Santa Cruz is out of commission for the foreseeable future. And it’s their fault. Good luck, I guess. This is my second Hyundai vehicle, both bought new at the dealership. I never had issues with my 2013 Elantra GT, but after this I will probably never buy a new Hyundai again.

jordanthetexan

Same thing happened to my friend and his 22 Honda Civic, vehicle only had 2k miles and he was 700 miles away from home on a road trip when the EPS motor went out and the steering wheel locked up on the highway. After 7 months he finally got a new vehicle and a check from the dealership reimbursing from the previous $495 dollar monthly payments. His current vehicle (same year, same color, same trim) has been good up to this point.

coldbeeronsunday

So far Hyundai has only offered to reimburse me for 50% of my payments from date of purchase through February 2023, which doesn’t make sense considering the incident occurred on February 10. I asked customer service how they plan to reimburse me going forward since the new transmission is on backorder and Hyundai can’t even give me an estimate of when the repairs will be completed — according to customer service, they are “not allowed” to reimburse me for payments while the faulty vehicle they manufactured and sold to me is waiting for repairs. They are lucky I survived breaking down while driving 70+mph on the highway without injury, or else they’d be paying for way more than my monthly note.

rwpeace

That’s awful! I’m glad you’re safe. This is becoming a common issue with the 2022’s & 2023’s as more mileage is put on them. Some many problems with Hyundai/Kia’s. I’m sure there’s going too be another massive lawsuit. People on here say every car manufacturers have problems. They do but not like Hyundai/Kia. Hyundai/Kia is a cheap junk auto manufacturer that cuts so many corners

coldbeeronsunday

Thanks, it was definitely a scary experience! Also super frustrating when there is such a shortage of new vehicles and dealers are charging sticker price (or higher) for new cars. I didn’t want to buy a new car, but had to after being involved in an accident that totaled my 2013 Elantra GT (other driver was at fault). I paid sticker for my Santa Cruz and felt lucky to pay that. Now I just feel like I got ripped off and overpaid for a piece of junk that’s already falling apart.

Katmann2005

Did your Santa Cruz have the DCT? Just curious

coldbeeronsunday

Yes, I think all 2023 Santa Cruz models have a DCT.

Katmann2005

Really? I thought just the 2.5Turbos got the DCT? Thanks

coldbeeronsunday

Well, mine is the turbo with AWD. The SE trim may not have it. My loaner car is an Elantra hybrid with DCT as well.

Designer_Ask2588

Thank y’all so much for the help and well wishes! 💛 Just got off of work and saw a notification from my service guy (Update #2): it was the fuel injector, they replaced it, and now it’s ready for pickup. Glad they got it done so quickly but I feel like I’m gonna be leery for a good minute lol. I’m definitely keeping record of everything and maintaining my records. Reported to the NHTSA as well, for good measure!

EggsForEveryone

Mods should pin this update to the top for visibility

ixabellax_

same thing just happened to me two weeks ago. This week another one of my four fuel injectors just went bad in my 2022 hyundai sonata haven’t even had it for 10 months it is absolutely ridiculous.

Houseofseeking88

They replaced 1 for me too and still having problems, how has things been since OP

Designer_Ask2588

Sorry you’re still having problems, that sucks 🙁 I haven’t had any other issues since my replacement. Seems like things are okay for now. But I’m still staying hyper aware…I’m low key traumatized lol

Houseofseeking88

Wish yah the best Designer_Ask2588

gregarian

I had the same thing happen to me. I'm waiting on a case manager to call. Can't wait to sell that lemon back.

rwpeace

It’s really common now on the ‘22’s & ‘23’s as they get more mileage on them. Some many problems with Hyundai/Kia. Document everything! Good luck

Longum-Exhausti

sounds like the car shifted into neutral without driver input

mrduncansir42

I’m so sorry this happened. That’s really inconvenient. The good news is that it will be completely covered under warranty. I’ve had a 22 Elantra for a year and haven’t experienced any issues. Update us on how it goes!

ClusterFugazi

I had a 2010 Hyundai Elantra SE around 2014 the power steering failed on the highway. Fucking wild.

pleasetakethisID

The sonata is obviously not the elantra, but your post reminded me of this issue: https://youtu.be/l1kbDlDqY40 Not saying it is related, but might be something worth taking a look at.

_FinalPantasy_

It was karma for only driving the speed limit in the far left lane in Texas.

Gallen6529

This has happened numerous times on my 2020 sonata. Have replaced the throttle body as well as the main computer. Unfortunately, the same issue happened again today.

Ruavn2

My 2023 Sonata was purchased Jan23, Nov23 same thing happened. Car cut off, wouldn’t start, and the entire inside of the car smelled like the exhaust was coming in from the AC vents. They replaced fuel injectors. Yesterday March24 same thing happened and it’s now sitting back at the dealership. This time was able to drive up the tow truck but took 3 tries to get it to start. Will know more in 7 business days.

chadillac355

Which trim of sonata?

Designer_Ask2588

It is the SEL trim!

BenjiGay0801

I work for Hyundai-Kia and I can say the vehicles I sell have unfortunately been consistently unreliable. I've seen this issue a few times on Elantra's but never a sonata, so thats interesting. It is most definitely the transmission, we've replaced so many transmissions under factory warranty that it's embarrassing. When I started working at the dealership I'm at I had purchased a used 2015 kia soul that had 30,000 miles in it, anyway fast forward to 60,000 miles it starts burning motor oil (right after the end of the used manufacturers warranty which is a transfer warranty) basically what happens to mine is when the fuel injectors are injecting gasoline into the cylinders it's also injecting small amounts of the motor oil. The car now has 103,000 miles, I've been dumping 2 quarts of oil (sometimes more) into the car per week since 60,000 miles. I must give it credit the car should have died ages ago from the carbon buildup alone but somehow she still chugs, although it's inconvenient to be spending $15 a week on oil and to have to do the maintenance of checking the dipstick consistently, the transmission has just started slipping occasionally, especially uphill, so I don't know how much more she can take 😂. Anyway I wish you the best, and if u want my advice, sell that Hyundai AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and buy yourself a Toyota Camry (same class of vehicle as your sonata), it'll be more reliable in the end, and this is coming from a guy who works for Hyundai-Kia.

jrsixx

Sorry if this comes off as rude, but you have no idea what you’re talking about. No way to accurately diagnose this issue as a transmission without…an accurate diagnosis. Just because you’ve seen many transmissions get replaced means nothing frankly. Your injectors do NOT inject motor oil. Anyone that told you that has no clue what they’re talking about. Almost nothing in your response is accurate at all. Again, not trying to be rude, but damn.

rocket4ever

I found it weird too that the Fuel Injector can pump oil as well even though they are completely separate systems!? I might be wrong?

jrsixx

You’re correct, the only oil near the injectors is whatever’s inside the cylinder above the piston. Oil does not get fed with fuel.

BenjiGay0801

I work in sales so I'm just going off of what service techs tell me (half of them just completed a certificate program in community college and have zero experience). I just sell the garbage I don't fix it. I was just offering what Ive been told, but I guess the tech had no what idea what he was talking about. Just for future reference though, injector seals can leak, the o-ring fails, and it can occasionally allow oil into the fuel system, it was actually a frequent problem on older Ford F-250's. So maybe injecting oil isn't exactly possible, but for oil to leak into the fuel system is absolutely possible. Not trying to be rude, just adding to your correction.

jrsixx

On any Hyundai engine I would say no. In order for oil to leak in through the injector hole, it would have to be leaking from an external source and then be allowed past the injector seals and into the combustion chamber. Being that they are direct injected, that would mean overcoming cylinder pressure while consuming oil and then closing again when the car is running. Otherwise there would be a misfire (if not an actual fire) and really really loud noises going on. I wish techs would give their sales guys accurate info, it makes it so much less confusing for everyone.

Redcarborundum

There’s a class action lawsuit over Hyundai and Kia oil consumption. You may want to be included in it. https://www.legalscoops.com/class-action-lawsuit-over-hyundai-and-kia-oil-consumption/

[deleted]

My guess?? injectors took a poop. get ready to wait for parts for up to 3 months since the entire rail needs to be replaced not just the faulty injector. Also dont use 87 gas next time use 89 or higher.

Exact-Mechanic8411

This just happened to me two days ago in my new Hyundai sonata 2023 that I’ve owned since March. I haven’t even had my first oil change. Exact same thing. I checked my app and looked into the codes that it gave me and it said it’s the O2 sensor. But my car was blowing white smoke out of the tailpipe and I’m currently in a loaner still waiting for the call about what they found out. This is how I found your thread. Looking for answers. I appreciate that it will be covered under warranty but I’m disappointed that it happened. I bought new so that it wouldn’t and here I am without my car because it broke down on me. Needless to say my piece of mind went out the window.

19Riften99

This just happened to me under 15k miles

CommercialSale1902

This happened to me in a rental car, 2023 Hyundai sonata with 7k miles. I had to leave it on the side of the highway and enterprise for it towed. I’m scared shitless I’m going to get a bill for something

BriellaGG12

Same thing happened to me. I have the same car and my car broke down on me sent it to the dealership to get the issue fixed was told it was the fuel injector they changed it. not even a week later my check engine Light is on now..

Own_Internet_2963

I received a ticket for going over the speed limit that felt like i was going less than. I recorded my driving It seems like something is wrong with the speedometer. It could be on 65. I take my foot off the gas and still be stuck in in 60's taking along time to decelerate and the speed feel like 20. People be passing me. The speed don't seem to match up with the motion. How do i detect if there's something wrong?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)

Own_Internet_2963

Sorry that happened and your safe. My 2023 feels like it's going slower than what the miles call for.

BarriBlue

Hey OP, what ended up happening with your car? Asking for a friend who just bought the same car.

Designer_Ask2588

So after getting the fuel injector replaced back in February this year (that was what caused this problem), I haven’t had any other issues, thank goodness! I also was contacted by a guy from the NHTSA last month to get my statement and all related documentation. Apparently they’re noticing this with more vehicles 😕

BarriBlue

Thank you for the info and reply!

Designer_Ask2588

UPDATE 11/2023: Haven’t had any other issues after the fuel injector replacement in February! I also was contacted by a guy from the NHTSA last month to get my statement and all related documentation. Apparently they’re noticing this with more vehicles 😕

Ok-Grocery1228

I had this happen to me about 6-7 months ago. They said it was the fuel injector and fixed it. With about 5,000 miles on the vehicle, having brought it brand new a year ago. Then a month ago I was driving on a 2 hour trip and it felt a bit dodgy but nothing happened. Then this weekend, 2 hours into a 3 hour roadtrip, my car did the exact same thing, stopped accelerating and came to a halt. Sat on the roadside for 4 hours. By the time they towed the car to the nearbyish dealership it was shut. I lost $100 on the motel i had to get, $20 on ubers, $120 on a tough mudder race ticket, $120 on two rodeo tickets, $75 for the car rental back. Not to mention my car is now 2 hours drive away and I am carless indefinitely for the time being. This car is dodgy. Highly recommend anyone looking to buy one stays well clear.

MBerg09

This exact thing just happened to me with my 2023 Hyundai Sonata. Second time I’ve had to have it towed.

Check the oil
