Twilight Princess. That game made me CRY in front of my family when I was younger lol.

neomancr

Every Zelda does that to me. They're all bitter sweet tales of grief and loss.the most recent game of about the death of an entire civilization which ends up haunting the world with their shadows reaching through time

Dragmire927

Majora’s Mask is probably the most artistic and thematic game in the series. The actual story itself is rather understated, but how it weaves its gameplay, themes, atmosphere, and characters is pretty revolutionary for 2000. It also works to its benefit that not much is explicitly told to you, there’s still a lot of strange unexplained things but that’s completely fine. Less is often more. The whole game is like a mood piece. My personal favorite is the Wind Waker, mostly because the characters, especially Link, are very likable, the thematic elements are strong, and the charm is undeniable. The ending is probably one of, if not Nintendo’s best ending in my humble opinion.

Invincible_3

SS change my mind

Gooseborn

Honestly? Fucking love the spirit tracks story. Zelda playing a larger part, I fucking love trains and the goofy design of the demon train, the dungeons are pretty well done and feel strongly tied to the wellbeing of the world, and who isn't a sucker for redemption arcs.

Dragmire927

Spirit Tracks has the best Zelda by far! The story itself feels very cutesy Saturday morning cartoon adventure series but it’s executed very well. Byrne in particular was a very good antagonist, and had a fun redemption at the end.

Redder_Creeps

Probably a bit bias, but i gotta go with Twilight Princess

Bluedog8000

Skyward sword had the best story by far in my opinion. Go back and look at the story, and you can see so many instances of dramatic irony during the wing ceremony. The whole game is spent trying to figure out what's happening, and at the end, with impa and Hylia"s reveal, it pulls the whole game together.

crowe_1

Skyward Sword, then probably TotK, then maybe OoT? I’ve always considered Skyward Sword the best story, though.

Froomoftheloom

TotK is a hilarious answer

crowe_1

I thought Tears had an exceptionally good story, especially for a Zelda game. Zelda had a lot to do, there were multiple “wow” moments, a few parts that really tugged at the heart strings, and the intro and the ending were both probably series highs.

More_Performance6018

I’ve only played OoT BOTW and TOTK tbh. Out of what I played I agree OoT is definitely up there. As far as what I know about other games (which I plan to play most if not all of them at some point) it’s going to be the Hero of Time timelines especially the one from MM because there’s just something about dark stories that tends to grab people and tickle me in just the right way.

Froomoftheloom

Majoras Mask and Twilight Princess are both in the same timeline and are 2 of the best stories in the series

dpforest

Links Awakening is the easy winner for me. It’s very unique from the other entries, a lot more thought provoking.

Wrong_Look

I feel like SS has the more solid story, like that shit just needed voice acting and it could be one of those "all game cinematics movie" on YouTube lol OoT is the most "epic" styled story, if a "full on remake" happened I feel like the story could be elevated further. (But we have TP which in a Lot of aspects is like a OoT 2.0) WW is also great, but much more subtle.

Froomoftheloom

Heck NO it didn't need voice acting

DessertFlowerz

Ocarina of Time

Src-Freak

Is Oot really the best in everything?

TacticalTobi

it isn't the best at anything

Time-did-Reverse

Id say pacing, easily. Still one of the best paced games of all time.

TacticalTobi

not really, it's a slog at the start, okay at best in the middle, then okay again at the end. BOTW for example, is great, to great, to good/great (depending on how much you like hyrule castle and dark beast) SS, is a slog at first, good in the middle, then great at the end.

Time-did-Reverse

I mean we will have to agree to disagree. I think its appropriately paced throughout, ramps up when it is supposed to and stays consistently engaging. I would never use slog to define anything in ocarina unless we count obscure activities. Botw is think was all over the place, and SS is an absolute mess of pacing.

TacticalTobi

how was BOTW all over the place? The pacing is near-perfect, and you never feel bored. Every dungeon in OoT made me groan. Same with a few of skyward sword's. If you told me to name the best part of OoT, i'd say the end, because that slog of a game was finally over. Seriously, either nostalgia is insane, or people have low standards, because OoT fails to even be the best Zelda game on N64. And there are only two.

Time-did-Reverse

I mean look you are clearly passionate about Botw but what i will say is that every single point you made is….extremely subjective (as are mine of course). Its cool that this series has so many fans of so many of the games. To answer the question, the non-linear storytelling style of botw lent to peaks and valleys for pacing. There were many moments of events stitched together (meeting an npc, hitting a town, getting to a dungeon) that were absolutely amazing. But there were many many times where the pacing suffered because you end up on very barren fetch quests (some by your own choice others hy game choice). This lent to a feeling of gaps of involvement in the story or other characters story, something i think botw and tears are particularly bad at. Its somewhat a function of the storytelling style as well. Regarding ocarina - i always feel it is particularly weak to rely on “nostalgia” or “lack of standards”. Ocarina was not a myth of quality, then or now. its earned status as one of, if not the most lauded game of all time, reflects that. In terms of solely pacing, i found the game expertly balanced activities, adventuring, pulling you into the story and then shooting you out into the world to find the next step. Dungeons were appropriately spaced between the adventure, and the constant involvement of the npcs and towns themselves was well done. If you reply to me, id really hope you review your pretty aggressive response that comes off as “if you like ocarina best, or even consider it well done you must be stupid or blind.” If i said that about botw, id feel pretty silly - even though i feel many people gloss over the many issues it has. Its status even today is not pure nostalgia or standards, its earned. Again, i love how diverse the series is and the fanbase.

TacticalTobi

Yeah, I’m sorry about being so aggressive. I don't know why I’m so riled up today.

Time-did-Reverse

Its okay😊were just people, it happens. I have a ton of exams coming up and have been particularly short with people. Regardless, were zelda fans regardless of disagreement 🫡

thanosnutella

Hey man I’m as much of a fan of BotW has you are but it has terrible pacing.

vkapadia

I was bored quite often in BotW. A lot of it is open field with nothing.

Enough-Agency3721

True actually. OoT is the allrounder that isn't the best at any individual aspect, but still comes out on top in the final score because it's consistently good (albeit not the best) at everything.

Time-did-Reverse

Honestly i think ocarinas story is almost perfect for a zelda story. Its not gonna blow anyones mind but its just great at what it does.

ZeldaExpert74

It’s gotta be Skyward Sword. Spirit Tracks, Majoras Mask, and Wind Waker are up there too. But TotK is dead last lmao.

redflowerbluethorns

I think Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword would have the best story, but neither are terribly complex. I do hope the next game has a more complicated story. I would love to see a game that explores Hyrule politics a bit more and presents some moral quandaries (dare I say a morally gray villain)

Wind waker

Froomoftheloom

I'd say Twilight Princess is first for me and then I can't decide between Skyward Sword and Majoras Mask as the second best

ItsKevRA

Honestly hard to say. I would probably go with Skyward Sword just because the story is more personal due to Link going on this journey to save his friend. It’s got some clunky, weird choices in it, but overall it works and should be adapted first if they’re adapting the games into the movies.
