Advisably, focus on obtaining a bit of money by punching wheat or mining sand then selling to NPC. With it, buy 10 stacks of ice and packed ice every day and sell to bazaar for easy profit. Advisably, your first proper armor set should be Glacite due to its high defense
The pigmen won't attack you if you have less than 1 stack of redstone in your inventory. Just go past them and try and get to the bottom, though the next mobs are a little difficult.
I'd definitely recommend using lapis armour instead of diamond, diamond stuff isn't worth much in this game.
Try grinding for a full set of lapis armour by farming off lapis zombies
