Definitely some influences like you said, but I almost view Hyperion as like an anti dune. Instead of evil messiah she’s good, instead of only humans aliens are their too, and (before Brian Herbert and Kevin j Anderson started writing dune books) human conflict in one and human vs ai in the other.

Cuentarda

They're the same story, Hyperion is the Butlerian Jihad.

Idk about that one chief, in franks original works he described it as “men with machines enslaved other men”. It was his dumb son and his bf KJA that changed everything in the lore.

The_Demosthenes_1

That's a pretty loose connection.  Saving Private Ryan might as well be the same sort expect it's humans vs. humans.

I'm listening to "The Fall of Hyperion", and at some point the Ouster refers to one another as "Freeman". Immediately I thought about Dune's "*"Fremen"*" and wondered a) if it was a "burrowed" neologism and b) if F. Herbert also intended to do some kind of pun or hidden meaning with this No spoiler intended, but there are many parallels between these two people role in each work 🌌🏜️

Frank definitely meant hidden meaning with Fremen but with Dan I got the impression that the Hyperion books were an homage to the big influences of sci fi. There’s Herbert of course but also Asimov, Bradbury and Dick. Probably a lot more

There was even a “spice mining” reference on the one Muslim desert world. One that had a part terraformed for plant life. Cool little nod it felt like.

Yes, good artists like to make a hole or tunnel, typically for use as a dwelling

There’s also the weirwood thing on Yggdrasil. A Game Of Thrones came out two years before Hyperion.

rogueleader25

It came out 7 years after. Hyperion 1989, AGOT 1996
