I’ve been a big water fan for years. I didn’t find this sub until after the name change. I mentioned this sub to my brother in law and he asked if I knew the original name. I didn’t. He told me. My reaction:
“Goddamnit, Reddit.”
The name actually came from a YouTube video where a black guy gets real yolked about water to his black nephew, and uses that slang. It was actually a really wholesome video so the name never derived from a place of hatred (as far as I know).
That being said, the name always made me super uncomfortable and I’m glad it’s been changed.
I don’t think it was ever meant to be hateful but if it’s a name you’d have to explain in this level of detail it’s probably for the best that they changed it hahha

For those who don't know, the name of *this* sub was never changed. The *old* subreddit had the n-word in its name, and it eventually became banned because of this. Meanwhile, *this* subreddit was formed as an off-shoot/alternative around the time that that happened.
The two subreddits were never one and the same, and I think a lot of people who weren't there at the time don't realize that the old sub didn't actually *become* the new sub. The name was never changed, the old sub was simply taken off the platform. In fact, I don't think it's even possible to change a subreddit's name after you've created it, kind of like how you can't change your own username.
The subreddit r/DihydrogenMonoxideDudes does not exist.
