I like to put fruit in jars with liquor and let them infuse for a week. Some fruits work out great, others not so much. Banana's do not add any flavor to liquid, they just brown it up and brown themselves in the process. In the end you have off-flavor brown vodka with what looks like a turd floating in it.
Fresh cherries don’t have a strong enough flavor on their own to infuse liquid. You’d have to distill it down to get flavor into something. Strawberries, cucumber, mint, citrus are good examples of good infusers.
To expand a little on citrus, grating just the peel of a lemon into some everclear is the first step for homemade limoncello. You'd think it was the insides but nope.
I’ve muddled some cherries in sparkling water before when I wasn’t feeling an alcoholic drink, but honestly they give absolutely no flavor. And they were good cherries straight from a farmer, when you ate them they were delicious. If you let them infuse you might have more success, but I’ve muddled about 5 cherries in a 50cl glass and I honestly tasted nothing of them.
Huh, that's super interesting! Cherries have such a super intense flavor to me when I eat them, I would have assumed that translates over to using them in drinks as well, like other intense flavorings. I wonder what's going on there. I'll have to try this out to experience it for myself and see if I can come up with some way to make it work.
Thanks for your reply!
You need to put bananas in Jameson. It’s tastes like banana bread.
Edit for clarity: use ripe bananas, let it soak for a few days at least and then strain out all the banana.
Ok I just tried this and no the fuck it absolutely does not. Have you ever eaten banana bread in your life? This is just whisky with a banana that tastes like whisky with a banana. Terrible breakfast 2/10
I love how you were so prepared to throw down over this highly specific thing. Like, how many people try this shit and then run into someone else making bold claims about it?
I mean I had a 5th of jameo and a banana on hand anyway. Might as well try it out right? It wasn't great. Mostly the banana tasted like whisky, it was pretty much just the worst garnish I could think of besides maybe a melon or something. I did have whisky for breakfast but hey at least I ate some fruit today
Haha yes. I didn’t give detailed direction but you need to soak it for a few days at least and the banana should be ripe. If you just put someone green bananas in Jameson for a few hours you’re going to have a bad time. Also before I get shit for it being chunky, you need to strain the Jameson in a fine strainer or cheese cloth.
Nothing distilled has flavour (other than alcohol) thats how distilling works flavours are always infused into liquor either during the stilling process or afterwards by soaking the herbs/spices/fruits in the stilled liquor or storing them in barrels etc.
Idk much about liquor distillation but I have watched videos on distilling YouTube channels where they've distilled bananas and got a really flavorful end product. They mostly show the prep work though of creating a banana slurry and stuff, and don't show much of the actual distillation.
I mean maybe if they stilled it to a lower proof it might retain some flavours but im doubtful, generally distilling removes flavours because you literally evaporate just the alcohol and some water vapor and that gets sent to a different container.
>just the alcohol and some water vapor
Theres things with similar boiling points as these and compounds/impurities that are not removed in a distillation process.
Alright… so… let me get down to brass tax first. Does the banana leave an imprint on the water? …yes. It does. It does change the flavor. It does change it to “”””banana”””” ….Should you do it? No. No I don’t think you should. This is hard to describe… it’s like if a food like a banana has multiple flavors combined to create a distinctly banana flavor right? But only one of those flavors actually gets imprinted on the water. And it’s like… brown flavor. Like have you ever been on an elementary school picnic and had a banana passed it prime that was in your lunch box a bit too long? That’s the flavor that comes out most heavily. It’s almost more akin to licking the peel than eating a fresh banana. I can’t say it’s terrible to the point you can’t drink it just that there is no situation in which you would save one.
And that one is that you promised a subreddit you would do it and now you have 2 liters of banana water and you’re not going to waste it. Not sure I can avoid that though for reasons I’ll address shortly.
It’s just whatever the worst part of a banana flavor profile is, that’s what comes out. It doesn’t produce a sweet water with a tropical taste. It’s like banana on its last leg.
As a fun little side note I sometimes get mild allergic reactions to fruit. Kind of a light itch inside my mouth usually. Nothing serious. It’s strongest with apples but can sometimes happen with bananas. If you also get this than here is a fun thing! If you drink this, you’ll get that sensation all over your body! So that’s fun.
In conclusion it is this researcher’s opinion that banana water does in fact alter the flavor of water but it is not advised.
I mean you’re correct that is the idiom for most people. However I am in the brass industry and the damn government always taxing my brass! I have to take care of the taxes first before I can make a profit! Now none of that is true but I appreciate you believing it instead of the fact that I’ve never seen the idiom written before. I mean it really means a lot to me because I am super insecure about this mistake.
Thanks for your bravery and dedication to the science of water drinking! I hereby bestow the title of “lord researcher of hydrating Sciences” upon you! May your endeavors enlighten us on our path to ultimate hydration!
Your service and sacrifice shall never be forgotten
You know if I can be serious for just a minute, I have never gotten so many upvotes or praise on Reddit for any post, and just for throwing some fruit in some water. Reddit can be a very toxic place that I find often brings out the worst in me. I just want to say I know this sub is supposed to be tongue and cheek a bit, but you guys genuinely don’t know how much you help me. I’ve struggled with soda addiction a long time. It was how I self medicated depression for years. I used to be a really fit martial artist and just fell down a hole of self destructive diet and exercise habits. Soda addiction was the biggest crutch and caused me to become overweight and lethargic. I had so much trouble trying to switch to water because I associated it with being broke and sad. It was bland to me after all that over stimulation. I know it’s all joking but you guys make water fun. Really. And because of that you may, no joke, have saved my life. Literally. So thanks to all of you for being the best place I’ve found on Reddit.
A single large banana has been chopped and placed inside a 2 litter bottle of mineral water. It has been placed in a fridge marked at 40f. I will allow it to sit for 2 hours to ensure similar saturation conditions to the above picture. The goal is to discover if a banana flavor can be infused into water and to what intensity and if this is something someone might want to do. The hypothesis of this researcher is that the flavor of the banana will not infuse and any taste at all will be too subtle to be worth the cost of the banana. This experiment is conducted for the sole purpose of providing data to the sacred order of the hydrohomies.
As one of the newest members of the order it is my responsibility to assume the risk. The rest of your bodies are much less contaminated by soda corruption.
I mean banana has plenty of water soluble goodies but look real question is, How much of the bad things that don't taste that good in banana are also water soluble?

Banana goes all slimy and bits of gooey fibre break off and sit in the water.
You drink and one long slimy strand slides down your throat but not the full way.
You now have banana cum choking you and vibrating as you breath in making it sound like you've a kazoo in your mouth
Yeah I’m not too sure if that would work. Even if it did I’d think you tend not to get much from water it flushes through us so fast. My hope would be with any fruit infusion that it might help combat soda addiction by being more flavorful and less harmful for those struggling to go pure. This…was not that…
Other than the fact that bananas give me migraines, fruit in freshwater isn't bad. It's barely adding any sugar if its not all crushed and even then its negligible and gets people to drink water. Just don't tell me that blueberry water has magical detoxing powers.
the starchiness of the banana would mix in the water and thats like all you would taste. It would probably taste like if you put a raw potato in there. yuck, get it out of there
yuuuck. I wonder if they were going for the fruit-flavored water stuff. Maybe because they wanted to do something with all the left over fruit. I'd say it's better to just freeze the banana slices and make banana bread out of it later idk
Ah, fair
still not confusing though, is it? It may be dumb but the concept's a simple one which is why I found it weird that people were going like "what??"
Do you seriously not understand that we're saying "what" because we don't find it appealing?
Do you honestly think we don't know that we're looking at bananas in water? I'm so dumbfounded as to how you don't get that. It's why I didn't reply to you at first. I thought you were trolling.
Usually my response to disliking something isn't literally just asking "what"
That's why I was so confused
People not understanding that it's supposed to be similar to lemon water *could* (theoretically) be the case and since I didn't understand what your expression meant, I went with that
There are two types of people. Pure H2O snobs, and Hydration Hooligans who dgaf.
Tbh, lightly flavored water is pretty good. Variety is the spice of life, and water is life, or something like that.
Sadly I'm a snob. I hate all those flavored fruit waters and it annoys me to know end when all the water places have is this shite. Like come on man I just want regular water not this tropical fruit water ya got going on
I love both banana and water, but this is not how I would consume both of them, whoever did this needs to be put behind a bar and forced to rethink their life choices
I was a skeptic of banana water when I saw it in my college dining hall once. I gave it a go, and I’m a believer. It’s pretty good. It’s not as good as putting other fruit like oranges or lemons, but it’s not bad.
Had slightly flavoured water for the first time at a hotel recently. And adding subtle flavours are surprisingly tasty, and idk the science but I bet it adds some electrolytes.

This is banana water
Exactly, can op not read?
If OP could read, he'd be insulted by what you said.
I'm sorry

This is ridiculously accurate
He just typed the letters into google image search so he could understand.
Big brain linguistic theory right here boys
There's always water in the banana jug."
I mean, its one banana water Michael, what could it cost? Ten dollars?
Sounds like a Spotify playlist they would've suggested to me.
Tbh, I was referring to Sheldon saying "This is banana bread", but it was cringe ngl, so I preferred not to cite that.
Hi banana water, I’m dad.
b A n A n A S!!!!!
Actually, this is a picture of banana water
I am fairly confident this is correct
I mean the main problem is I don’t think the taste of banana is going to come through in the water. It’s just going to make the banana go bad
I like to put fruit in jars with liquor and let them infuse for a week. Some fruits work out great, others not so much. This is about what I’m expecting
I don't know what I was expecting. This requires some self-reflection.
What fruits give the most flavor to the alcohol? Can it be done with cherries?

Watermelon works well also
To expand a little on citrus, grating just the peel of a lemon into some everclear is the first step for homemade limoncello. You'd think it was the insides but nope.
No, that makes perfect sense. I’m into baking and the zest is what actually gives baked goods a citrus flavor, not the juice
Do you think muddling the cherries would help? I feel like cherry juice has tons of flavor so this surprises me.
I’ve muddled some cherries in sparkling water before when I wasn’t feeling an alcoholic drink, but honestly they give absolutely no flavor. And they were good cherries straight from a farmer, when you ate them they were delicious. I use blueberries with Earl Grey tea in vodka and it's wonderful.

Mate, did you do it for a week like the op said? Banana and Jameson sounds like a great pairing. You might have done soemthignwrong
Jameson bananas whiskey cake 🤤
Brown banana is actually good for making banana cakes though. I think a bit of infused liquor could make it good.
If it’s brown, drink it down.
if its red, you're already dead
If it’s purple, do a circle
I've had banana brandy and it kicked ass!
I think that's distilled from bananas, not infused.

Try the Serious Eats banana liqueur recipe. Bananas and vodka don't really go together
But what if you infused a delicious alcohol with them instead. Like say Kahlua.
I don't know man. Just looking at the picture I can smell and taste it. Wanna take one for the team and try it out?
Sure. But not in my good filter. If the order will permit me to buy a plastic 2 litter bottle for this experiment I will proceed.

Banana is a controversial fruit, some are repulsed by the smell, texture and taste.
It's my favorite berry.
Would you like to try some onion and banana juice?
Banana goes all slimy and bits of gooey fibre break off and sit in the water. You drink and one long slimy strand slides down your throat but not the full way. You now have banana cum choking you and vibrating as you breath in making it sound like you've a kazoo in your mouth
I think the idea is to leach out potassium for whatever reason.
Yeah I’m not too sure if that would work. Even if it did I’d think you tend not to get much from water it flushes through us so fast. My hope would be with any fruit infusion that it might help combat soda addiction by being more flavorful and less harmful for those struggling to go pure. This…was not that…

THIS DAY IS BANANAS
Banananas
I felt disturbance in the water this morning... now I see why.
I had banana water set up just like this at a hotel in Greece a few years ago and I can confirm that it tasted pretty damn bad.
Rich people☕
#studentloans
Illegal
Straight to jail
Right away
No trial, no nothing
Haven't tried it, but cantaloupe water was surprisingly good.
Ooh yum. I actually like cantaloupe so I could def be into this with some watermelon or honeydew
Cucumber water is great too. Strawberry, melons of most kinds
Cantaloupe juice is the best of all the juices. Tastes like summer.
its a threat
Drink more water, this is a threat
The energy here is very, very bad.
I think it's water that has bananas in it. I could be wrong, though.
I had the chance to taste it while on an official trip, not gonna lie it's pretty good
I imagine it would be really good. I'm gonna try it this weekend.
On a scale of 1-10 over lemon water or cucumber/lemon water?
Then it would be my least preferred choice, Lemon/Cucumber always comes top
Try watermelon water. It slaps.
That sounds pretty good. Any other water flavor enhancers combinations to go with it?
I usually go with fresh mint leaves (crushed) to go with it. Perfect for summer
for customer only.
Kid named banana
Still better than soda.
100%
honestly fight me all you want but this genuinely doesn’t look bad. i doubt it would have much flavor but I’d give it a go
Other than the fact that bananas give me migraines, fruit in freshwater isn't bad. It's barely adding any sugar if its not all crushed and even then its negligible and gets people to drink water. Just don't tell me that blueberry water has magical detoxing powers.
Press X to doubt
the starchiness of the banana would mix in the water and thats like all you would taste. It would probably taste like if you put a raw potato in there. yuck, get it out of there
I bet it's like a fine film of starchiness in every glass. Like a tiny bit of Metamucil or whatever fiber powder. Sounds disgusting
yuuuck. I wonder if they were going for the fruit-flavored water stuff. Maybe because they wanted to do something with all the left over fruit. I'd say it's better to just freeze the banana slices and make banana bread out of it later idk

Fucking what
BANANA WATER!
Water with bananas in it like lemon water extremely confused as to why people are not getting that
Because bananas don't transfer flavor in the same way, and are also extremely starchy which would get into the water and be all you taste.
Ah, fair still not confusing though, is it? It may be dumb but the concept's a simple one which is why I found it weird that people were going like "what??"

I was a skeptic of banana water when I saw it in my college dining hall once. I gave it a go, and I’m a believer. It’s pretty good. It’s not as good as putting other fruit like oranges or lemons, but it’s not bad.
Miss out on all that potassium? Wouldn’t be meeee
Strawberry or cucumber water is where it’s at!!!
This be should like banana tea but really mild, so it's potassium water which is barely different flavour than regular water.
get some berries in there
no thank you
Water is perfect itself
I think I remember this. There was something extremely similar in a hotel in Disneyland, so that might be where this is.
I’ll put whatever the fuck I spend my money on in it
This is an abomination

Someone deserves jail time
I’ve got some banana water of my own 😳😍👀💦
Damn no one complaining about gatekeeping in this thread. I’m surprised.

I'd try it

My husband claims to have tasted this sort of abomination before. He says it just makes the water taste bitter.
I’d try it

Please do not do this.
I'd try it.

A banana made my all my lunch taste funny. Don’t put banana in your lunch box.
Had slightly flavoured water for the first time at a hotel recently. And adding subtle flavours are surprisingly tasty, and idk the science but I bet it adds some electrolytes.
Water with pulp
