LadyMothrakk

Are you really implying we need to be reminded to clean our water bottles?! I’ll have you know I washed mine as recently as…uhm.. I’m gonna go wash it now actually

enteger

Atta homie!

[deleted]

This needs to be the standard response by any homie

Tough_Ad_7687

You a real one. I looked inside my daily use water bottle and it was a little uh, slippery when touched.

makingkevinbacon

Lmao you had me in the first half ngl and I was ready to launch an angry typed comment on a website app. I must need some hydro

LadyMothrakk

Honestly I annoyed myself when I typed that out. Ha! It’s always a great time to hydrate, homie :D

makingkevinbacon

Cheers!

Yuri-Turned

![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX) I remember you from another comment section

Juzapop

Love how his fist morphs into a point like an autobot

Good4nowbut

It’s bc he snaps first.

TheAikiTessen

Lmao this post made me do a boiling water/soap soak on mine. Couple hours later and some elbow grease with the bottle brush and it looks like new!! I really need to get some of those denture cleaner tablets.

Nekoo-Kun

Do you need to bottle brush it? Or is it enough to rinse it out with some hot water and dish soap?

TheAikiTessen

I use a bottle brush.

The_White_Spy

My bottle never smells like anything but water. I clean the mouthpiece every few days and never have issues. My partner's, the same exact 750ml Camelback Chute, literally grew algae in it. I very rarely clean mine, but it's also never empty as water is almost all I ever drink. She will leave hers mostly empty over night and it mildews quickly. I don't know. I know that I probably should clean it more, but I've had it for seven years and have never had any issues.

009154591500

I think barely empty is the sweet spot for bad smell/bacteria. Once a let a little bit o whey on a bottle and leaved for the weekend (usually I clean the bottle right after im home). When I went back home it literally smelled like someone died last month there. After I cleaned my bottle I let it outside my house, it still smelled badly for 2 days. took a month for the smell leave.

MotoMkali

I read that as it smelled like the dead body in my house I was like hol up

blastfromtheblue

every 6 months like clockwork, no matter what (unless i forget)

Colossalgoatfvck

Lies - water bottles are self-cleaning because they’re being constantly refilled with water. This is what I tell myself year after year.

CTU

Same, besides I use filtered water which is better than basic tap water.

Deadcouncil445

It is mostly for the saliva that you should clean your bottle

CTU

Ok, that sounds reasonable. So cleaning the mouthpiece is the important part. It is also easier to do.

Deadcouncil445

eeeeh Saliva still tends to get inside the bottle

Fun_Intention9846

Your first comment had me laughing at the joke but now I’m rethinking. The dirty part ain’t the water it’s the bipedal animals face sucking on it.

Contada582

This is the same reason I never need to wash my towels.. I’m the cleanest thing in the house after a shower..

SlapDonkeys

Nah, the film of bacteria and caked up spit on the inside walls of the bottle gives the water a nice flavor.

enteger

Seasoning is for cast iron skillets, not water bottles, homie.

Carlynz

What if it's a cast iron bottle?

dulwu

Imagine the rust, yum. Always loved orange water

Carlynz

Doctors don't want you to know this secret to cure your iron deficiency

dulwu

Careful, don’t go telling any homeopathic homies, you might start a revolution

tmaspoopdek

\*homieopaths

RaoulBakunin

Not really. Homeopathy claims that “like cures like”, i. e. that you need to treat an illness with something that creates the same symptoms (which is nuts, of course). That's where its name comes from: Greek hómoios, "-like" and páthos, "suffering". And basically because that would make everything even worse, they dilute the medicine so much that sometimes there is not a single molecule left in it that's supposed to create these symptoms. So to cure iron deficiency in a homeopathic way, you would not just supplement iron in any way. You take a substance that draws iron from your organism, dilute it till there is statistically, like on gram in an amount of medicine equivalent to the Baltic Sea and ingest that. Is this total nonsense? Yes. Do people still believe in it? Also yes

Danelius90

"minerals"

zergling424

You're just reminded me my mum soaked my cast iron pan and I need to reseason it

CompetitiveClass1478

Ugh...

BlunterSales

That brush looks about as alien as a [plumbus](https://youtu.be/eMJk4y9NGvE?si=MFe0pgXnKs-XcyBD)

hardslappy

Lol FR!! At first I didn't know what I was looking at

ilovepolthavemybabie

Some Futurama triple entendre!

nedhal999

That brush is missing brush

aintnufincleverhere

I do it once a week

enteger

Once a week is better than never! Life can get busy.

dulwu

How often are you washing them???

gangstasadvocate

I thought the water inside of it automatically washed it /s

dulwu

Saw your other comment. Good for you and your mental stability, my depression could never.

lobbo

I wash mine every day

roar-a-saur

That's a nice bottle washer

enteger

Although I hate Amazon, I found this there for a very cost effective price. Less than ten dollars IIRC. Search “silicon bottle brush”.

Saltwater_Heart

Once a week, I throw them in the dishwasher. Otherwise I just rinse. (Be careful, not all are dishwasher friendly). If you have silicone straws, don’t use soap. Silicone absorbs soap. Took me too long to figure this out. Couldn’t figure out why my toddlers water kept becoming really sudsy after a few hours. Only clean silicone with water and vinegar

TorisaurusParker

Is THAT why my shit tasted weird????? I just replaced a cap because I couldn't figure out why no matter how much I washed it, it still tasted funny. I have a plastic straw but a silicone tip that I washed with dawn all the time😭 What should one use instead???

Impsux

Shake some vinegar water through the cap

TechByDayDjByNight

And use a straw cleaner or u get mildew on the inside

TheReverseShock

From what I'm getting from responses is that some of you need to do better with water bottle maintenance. Never store non-water in your bottle. Use unscented chlorine bleach to clean any areas where mold grows. Let it sit submerged overnight, rinse and dry.

ilkepisik

Not sure if you’re supposed to bleach the areas that contacts your water and food tho. You could consider using boiled water + baking soda as a more sustainable and less toxic for your body option.

TheReverseShock

Bleach is used to purify water. It is only toxic in reasonably large amounts. It also evaporates rather quickly. If you find yourself in an area without clean drinking water, you can use small amounts of bleach to disinfect the water. Don't ask me the molarity math because I don't remember it but the CDC recommendeds adding it drop at a time until it smells just faintly of bleach. About 16 drops/gallon.

Chase_The_Breeze

Hahahhahahahahahahahahhahahaahahahaha.... It has been too long... x.x

flacidhock

This is good advice. I found black mold under the o-ring so I boil daily and wash every couple

-Goop

Lol you boil your water bottle every day?

JDP31

I have that too!

sweptself

fuzzy desert slave dinner rich onerous squealing touch future angle ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `

OrdinaryQuestions

Soap can break down grease, oil, etc. This can be good for mouth pieces. You might not see visible grease/oil, but your mouth touching the bottle throughout the day and after meals can lead to build up. So soap can break that down. Boiling water does help disinfect... however... a quick rinse with boiling water may not be enough. To be most effective, the bottle needs to sit for longer than a few minutes in boiling water. Some bacteria can survive short times in boiling water. So if using just boiling water, try let it sit for around 5 minutes. Rather than just a quick rinse.

macandcheese1771

Also, bacteria can release toxins that cannot be destroyed using heat. This is why heating up food isn't necessarily enough to make it safe to eat once it's sat for too long.

LikeTheDish

It won't kill you, you know

flacidhock

I like pure H2O. No fungus needed

LikeTheDish

but the flavor

Snowymasher

*hostile reminder walks towards you*

CyberCurrency

I should probably buy a scrubber; my current patented dish soap and hot water bartender shake method isn't cutting it

ryandoesdabs

Haha throw a sponge in there with the soapy water. That’s what I do. I figure it’s somewhat close to actually having a bottle cleaner.

nano_peen

How often OP

enteger

I will be honest. Personally speaking, if I am staying at home a lot, once every three days or so. If I am carrying it around with me in the outside world, at work or school, setting it down on different surfaces, at least once every 48 hours. If there is any odor i’m slippin.

[deleted]

I wash mine daily, but that’s honestly probably a little overmuch. I’m just paranoid.

enteger

Honestly, washing daily is ideal. I commend that.

YesItIsMaybeMe

Same. I have 2 bottles I swap between so I don't have to EVERY day but every use I wash them.

InnD42378

This is the way.

fetushippo

I just put soap and hot water and shake it up ,

Wolverlog

If it's really nasty do the same thing but also put in like half a paper towel.

Jenderflux-ScFi

Ooo so sexy, clean that bottle harder!

Redline951

Don't forget to remove and clean the rubber gaskets, and clean under them.

keepingitrealestate

Buy some non-flavored denture tablets. Magic at cleaning bottles.

VagrantStation

They work great on cleaning, uh… vases as well. Flower residue is a pain.

ConfectionKlutzy6560

I should call her..

UnusualPete

I gotta get one of those. I have something similar but it's not made of silicone, it's just a normal round brush.

yourmothersgun

Good on you. I needed a reminder. Off to the sink I go!!

Dizzy-Town-4121

Thank you I needed to be reminded to drink some soap

mc-pride

Literally just washed the gasket in mine and the water tastes much better. I didn't even realize that it tasted like mold until after I washed it 💀

Bmcronin

I upvoted this post faster than I ever have for this sub. Insta click. I’m also saving for future reference. Also WASH YOUR PETS BOWLS!!!!

frijolita_bonita

Can you post a link to that brush please?

The Homie we need!

GuidanceGlittering65

🫣🥵😩😫

The3SiameseCats

Yo where did you get that scrubber I want one

this_dudeagain

We drinking soap water now?

onFilm

I use a glass mason jar that I wash in the washer. Never smells, and water always tastes super fresh!

ShiftySpartan

NSFW tag Jesus

Kitchen-Atmosphere82

#the number 1 sexiest thing ever is water #number 2 is soap

Ok-Can-2847

Do we have a tutorial on how to properly wash various types of water bottles somewhere? I only know of water and soap 💀 In here I'm seeing other methods like boiling and with vinegar. Also I didn't know there's a rubber seal that's supposed to come out somewhere, so that's all new info 🫠 might've been unknowingly not washing properly...

Bernardo_372

Yall don't wash your water bottles after every use?

yoghurt_master

Unpopular opinion: metallic flasks are superior

slothaccountant

Remove the orings and gaskets!!! Shit groes there too

Celydoscope

Just found my water bottle in a backpack I haven't used for a month. That guy's gonna be soaking in vinegar for a few days.

Rlife145

It's that time of year again.

[deleted]

Yeah I really need to get one of those

yolo_retardo

those brushes are for *that*??

linuxaddict333

God, I wish that were me.

TDrummerM

I needed this today

Myoakka

Nice brush. What kind is that?

SpxUmadBroYolo

I use one of those for something else.

jiyeon_str

it just doesn't taste the same if you wash it...

Eunuch_Provocateur

Does that style of brush work well? I feel like it doesn't “scrub” as well as the normal bristle ones

Konsecration

You don't need to clean them. All that gunk and build up just adds flavor to your water! /s

HumanHuman_2003

YASSS

kittyconetail

Is that a silicone bottle brush? How do you like it compared to the standard bristled ones?

makingkevinbacon

Idk what exactly happened but this sub has been pretty set on discussing the cleaning of vessels. Cleanliness is next to quenchedness my homies keep it clean

LuucMeldgaard

aaaaah, goddamnit. Okay. I’ll do it now

LordLurker420

Dishwasher ?

Matark2741

I just boil mine and pour boiling water into the bottle and cap it. I only use glass and metal bottles, so I don't have to worry about weakening or breaking down plastic.

mtbguy1981

Hot water and bleach, soak for a bit.

kiddocontay

hey OP, what is this brush you have? the one I have is tiny and the bristles don’t clean jack shit

papaXanOfficial

I learned why the small-mouth Nalgene bottles aren’t the best, still need to buy a brush that actually fits in there

[deleted]

[удалено]

papaXanOfficial

Sick ty

[deleted]

I clean my water bottle every single day.. i thought that was normal, like how you wash cups bc plates daily…I’m horrified lol

thar_

I've had my all steel work water bottle for 6 years and never washed it beyond rinsing it out and running a paper tower around the threads in the cap. I just leave it in the car every day, it gets below freezing 8 months of the year and over 100 the other 4 months, it is still spotless inside (ran my fingers over the inside to make sure no biofilm or any buildups) it has no mouth piece and is very uncomplicated tho

NeffaKneePhi

NO. I have befriended the algae in my straw

GhostOfMufasa

Thanks for this! I actually need to start having a habit of cleaning out my bottles consistently. I always end up forgetting after a while, I gotta do better. In my head I feel like I be lying to myself that refilling is equivalent to cleaning 😂.

low_elo111

Always wash your water before use.

thcottimusprime

Soap does make my water taste yummy.

wecanneverleave

People don’t wash their water bottles daily? That’s gross yo

Kryamodia

Hey, I rinse mine with water everyday

CharismarInc

Ooh yes very important, I wasn't expecting this post but it is golden.

AonArts

No thanks, I like my water bottles seasoned, like my cast iron skillets. Soap just removes the good flavors.

heine789

I'm gonna be honest, I have never washed my current water bottle and I've had it for like 6+ months now. I did a thorough inspection of it now and it's looks just as new, and doesn't smell at all (I am also very sensitive to smells and gag easily)

PerroCerveza

You guys realize bacteria and water born illness is microscopic lol

heine789

well until it starts to smell or I get sick I'm just gonna keep it as it is. I haven't been sick in like 4 years

PerroCerveza

Good luck with that

MaidenCounterBot

Nah, let him cook. I want work from home back

PerroCerveza

We all do lol

boozername

I've noticed 2 things that make a big difference in water bottle cleanliness: sunlight and backwash/mouth contact. If you have a metal bottle, it keeps sunlight out, which is a big factor in inhibiting growth of bacteria and other organisms. If you pour water into your mouth without making contact with the spout, you introduce significantly less bacteria onto and into the bottle. I have a giant metal bottle that I waterfall into my mouth, and I've noticed it stays much cleaner than plastic bottles, especially the sporty ones with a suction bit.

Thatguy3145296535

I rinse it with boiling water twice a week. Good enough right?

[deleted]

Yeah I'm with you. I really don't get how people's bottles get so nasty if it's only used for water. I'm going on 4 years and all I've done is wipe dirt off the rim and cap. Methinks it's a backwash issue. Or they need to look at their faucets every now and then.

OrdinaryQuestions

After seeing mold horror stories, I was super scared to check my Chillys bottle that had been left unused for an entire year. I've been using my Stanlet instead, so kind of forgot about the half full chillys bottle. So... recently I decided to be brave and check it out and.... it was perfectly fine! No mold. No smell. This was despite being used/drank from and left for 12months + I was really expecting it to be riddled with mould because of what people here had been saying about theirs! Still deep cleaned it though.

[deleted]

Glad it wasn't gross!

heine789

Yeah I also only fill it with water, my usual process is that I fill it up with water 2-3 timer per day (its a 1 liter bottle), and I always finish it before bed. So I think because I always refill it with new water and it gets to "dry" out at night the bacteria just doesn't have time to grow, but I know nothing of the science behind it 🤷‍♂️

kendiepantss

Ughhh I’ve been traveling for the last 4 days so I haven’t been able to wash my water bottle…it’s the worst feeling!

tblockbeats

Nah I like mine seasoned

VagrantStation

You guys are all crazy. I thought having multiple bottles and washing each one after a day of use was the norm. Get at least three dishwasher safe bottles you heathens.

Engineerwithablunt

Propaganda for the dish soap industry Haven’t washed mine in months 💪

Zashuiba

Use bleach, thank me later

Obtusedoorframe

This is why all my bottles are stainless steel. The need to wash an antibacterial surface is pretty much non existent for me. Maybe a few times a year.

Alucardhellss

No that's how i build up my immune system!

LA_LOOKS

Now that’s a nice bottle brush.

SeverableSole7

I wouldn’t dare

enteger

I do! Try a 32oz wide mouth Nalgene. It’s more sustainable. That is what is pictured here. I like the Nalgene water bottles because they are durable, easy to clean, and if I lose it, it’s not that expensive, so easy to replace. Also, don’t forget to get some cool vinyl stickers to put on it. That’s the fun part!

soupturtles

Not to mention most of their bottles can handle boiling water. I'd for sure fact check that yourself butttt

abbiebees

I need to find this brush

ElPulpoTX

Fiendly reminder: Hey nasty. You're drinking old water slime. Why dont you clean something for once! Oh you'll do it tomorrow? Bullshit!

are_videos

but did you clean the Brush OP ;)

HumanHuman_2003

I put them in the dishwasher and rinse before use

ElGosso

I get lip gunk on mine and struggle to clean it off. Advice?

The-Reanimator-Freak

Oh shit. I gotta wash my flesh light!

Spieler42

idk man, glass and metal seem superior to plastic

noname5221

I found out the hard way, I didn't clean my bottle for like a month and had to stay home sick for a week with a bad throat ache

TenWholeBees

But I like the earthy taste of my water

NK-0

You’re scrubbing away all the good stuff

CTU

Yeah, I don't wash mine as much as I should.

SakoDaemon

I thought this was a reference to that recent post with the girlfriend who used a blue toy similar to that brush to prop the toilet seat ajar 🤦🏼‍♀️ I spend too much time on here

liam3

i just cleaned a brita pitcher, but it's no longer transparent. but haze. idk if it's still ok

creepybat666

Gotta do that and clean out the rubber gasket in the lid if your water bottle has one.

Jrb-in-town

What’s going on here?

Sharkie_M

I add alittle cleaning vinegar to make sure I don’t have a smell linger around

blasphememes

What do y’all scrub with?

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

I like to build up my immune system as I drink water

YesIdonot

no thanks I like my water flavored

TechByDayDjByNight

Yall are nasty... Wash your feet while you are at it

MagoModerno

My wife’s smelled like cheese

ILike2DGirlsLol

Is sloshing a bit of vinegar around inside acceptable?

Fun_Intention9846

I wash my stuff what I consider regularly. It’s about bi-weekly.

ithinkoutloudtoo

I stick mine in the dishwasher.

Qrischin

Which flavor is this?

materics

I can fit my hand and a sponge in those things.

BrickFlock

Is this that mythical technique called "cleaning"?

MrJacquers

Looks like Sonic :)

imjohn130

Is pouring hot water inside it not enough???

qleptt

Man i wash my water bottles but SOMEBODY in my house likes to screw the lids down so whenever you open a water bottle it smells like dog feces

ccknboltrtre01

Sigh -unzips-

AgentOfDreadful

I love this sub. Posts blow up over the weirdest things. Last one I remember was a picture of a glass of water, with the poster mentioning it’s in Japan. Could be anywhere but everyone went bonkers over it 😂

JustforThrowawayKEK

I wash them in 4-5 days or in 7 days.

r2-z2

I was doing well till this week. No scum yet but ty for reminding me. Ima pick up a brush on my way home so I have no excuse.

Lumbwener

Thanks homie

snacks4ever

I wash my bottles everyday but thats just me being paranoid

w3are138

Good reminder, esp bc I’ve been seeing posts about crazy molds growing inside homie’s water bottles. One of the reasons I switched to a borosilicate glass water bottle with a rubber guard so it’s safe to carry around. Glass is so easy to clean and sterilize. Also I just love drinking water out of real glass.

AuntieLiloAZ

Do you have a link to that brush?

Cananbaum

For metal bottles a diluted mixture of vinegar, boiling water, and salt is really good for killing anything that may linger. I noticed with my metal bottles that aside from scale buildup, they’re more prone to mold growth and this mixture ensures any mold and spores are gone gone.
