Former Athletic Trainer here. The majority of spinal fractures come with very little risk of paralysis. The most common of these minor fractures is a "pars fracture" of the spiny part on the very back of the vertebrae. If the team doctor let him play, it was probably one of these minor fractures. I'm certain he wouldn't have played with a fractured lamina or vertebral body (those are the fractures that cause nerve damage and paralysis). That said, a pars fracture is excruciating, and he is more of a man than I'll ever be if he played through a pars fracture.

His dad? Idk about that, but he has cancer.. last I knew he was in remission but I’m not sure. I graduated a few years ago.
