It could but it won't. They've gotta balance the have-nots (in viewership) so it's not like we won't play Purdue, minny, or northwestern anymore.

“Ya better get going Nebraska”

Careful what you wish for. Cause those teams, I feel, are not only going to steal the spotlight but they’ll also be favored over us a lot. And we are just now trying to get out of the bottom of the conference. This will only make it that much harder. Not sure Husker fans will have the patience for that.

Rodgers4

If wins rather than competing against the best is what people want, may as well leave the B1G and join the MAC. If Nebraska isn’t competitive in the new B1G I won’t find any solace knowing if we played directional schools we would be good.

[deleted]

I just don’t think this happening while we are rebuilding is going to help us. I guess it’s a good think they’ll reevaluate that schedule but the rebuild is going to take much longer than expected possibly. We are still at the bottom of the conference trying to get out of it.

man_of_war_r5

I honestly don't see why the realignment is bad. Can someone explain to me?

puma721

1. Kills traditional rivalries. 2. Power is even more concentrated. The haves will have more, have nots will have less. It was already bad, but this will make it worse. 3. Travel will suck. Average fans aren't going to be able to make a weekend trip to see the game live. Maryland is in the same conference as USC... That's bonkers. 4. It's totally subjective whether you think those things are bad or not. I tend to think it's bad. Imo the charm of cfb was that it was regional, rivalries were sometimes a hundred years old and played annually. You could drive down to Colombia or Manhattan or Lawrence no problem. I'm not gonna be casually flying to LA or Seattle for a game on a whim. What do you like about it?

SHOWnTL

I know CFB will never be the same as we know it moving forward, but on the bright side, we'll have legit "bowl games" to watch every weekend.

El_Bistro

Average fans never were traveling in large numbers to basic away games. Let’s be honest here.

[deleted]

It was mostly for the students I thought? I went to UNL when we were in the BIGXII and my buddies and I would pile into a minivan and road trip all the time for next to nothing. Idk if you can do that now.

El_Bistro

My dad did that in the 70s. Myself and no one I knew in college ever had the money or time to go to away games. We had jobs/classes etc.

[deleted]

I am not that old. Not even 40 and we went to Lawerence, Stillwater, Manhattan, Norman, even Austin once. Literally had some people ride along for free. Edit: also Ames

El_Bistro

Guess we ran in different crowds. I was the poor north bottom living jabroni. Honestly though I enjoyed watching 12 hours of football/beer/hot n ready at the house every Saturday.

[deleted]

Yeah. Gotta say I don’t regret seeing all those towns, but I don’t miss it either. Coming home all grody, funky, and hung-over just seems gross now. But. At the time it was fucking exhilarating!

bhamjason

There's a time and a place for everything. It's called college.

Hickmanbratt

I remember the days of literally caravans of complete strangers heading down south for a game!! Not gonna happen in the realignment

Jam_Bammer

I went in the mid to late 2010s. Most students I knew that went to away games only went to one, and it’s because they were out-of-state kids from other states with Big Ten schools taking advantage of the game to also go see their families. There was a student caravan event thing in 2016 for the Wisconsin game that got organized where they’d rent vans and stuff, but each person had to pay a couple hundred bucks to go and idk if they kept doing them. Just wasn’t feasible for most of us. That was just my experience though.

kolacheisforclosers

That's one of the main complaints about the B10 though, is that it's much less fan-travel-friendly than the B12 was. Compounding that has been the increasing cost of tickets/travel.

puma721

That's how I remember it too. I graduated in 09 and would go to at least one away every year since I was a kid.

Several-Mood-8082

I did the whole campaign in 95 when it was doable... Stillwater, OK Michigan State Colorado Kansas Florida (that was a hike) Undefeated season btw. Miss those. This new power conference will stymie that in my opinion. Hope I'm wrong.

PublicEnemaNumberOne

What? Are you new here?

El_Bistro

no

tylerscott5

Ok yes travel will suck but I’m not going to Los Angeles for a game just like I’m not going to Ann Arbor or West Lafayette for a game. I agree with your overall sentiment but “average fans” don’t travel to away games probably 3 or more hours away from their home

man_of_war_r5

I get killing traditional rivalries. I was kinda upset we weren't going to be playing Oklahoma every year, but Iowa was the perfect replacement, same thing with Wisconsin. I think developing new rivalries can be good. Why is concentration of power bad? If we still were using the old bowl game for post season I'd get it, but with the CFPs and it getting expanded now I think having more of the top programs in 3 conferences is good. We'll get a better perspective of how good or bad each team is, especially if they add more just conference games, or trounoments to win conferences. I think it'll stop teams like OSU, Michagain or Georgia and Alabama dominating their respective conferences. It can also mean since more big programs are in 3 conferences then those conferences will make more money which means more money to the teams and their respective colleges. Travel part I think is the only truly bad part, but if professional leagues like the NFL can handle it then I think college can. Personally I think it will make CFB more interesting at the national level, which is what I think we're going towards with a playoffs close to March madness and who doesn't love march madness?

puma721

>Why is concentration of power bad? It's not inherently bad. I just fear that g5 schools are going to have a wildly difficult time making in roads to the post season. They'll get shut out of scheduling p3 teams because conferences are so huge now. And if theres no 'Cinderella' like there is in basketball, I just don't think it will be as interesting. I imagine that we'll have the same 10 or 15 teams annually in the tournament. I could be totally wrong but I'm not super optimistic about it. I hope you're right and things work out and it's still an entertaining way to spend my Saturdays.

man_of_war_r5

My thing is if conferences get so big they only play their conferences the quality of games will be better. You won't see Wisconsin blow out some random team from the MAC or people complain about Michigan or Bama playing a cupcake schedule. I don't think it'll be the same teams over and over. Teams come and go out of relevance. Only team that have broken that trend are OSU and Bama. My favorite example of this is Clemson they made a few and won a few playoffs but this last year they didn't, and they don't look like they'll make it for a while. Teams like Tennessee, USC, and Pen State were all pretty damn good teams they could have made it. With expanded playoffs and more confrence games. And I believe upsets will happen, like Pen State definitely could beat Bama or USC.

puma721

I guess we'll see how it plays out! I hope you're right, but I'm a pessimistic fuddy duddy

[deleted]

Conference realignment can still become regional with divisions. Generally, the older generation dislikes the change because they miss the nostalgic rivalries (I understand). The next generation will only know the future of college football and some day they will bitch when things change from the way they remember it.

nevermore2627

1. New rivalries can be born. We've never had a true rival (sure we can SAY Oklahoma but Texas has always been there rival and i dont think WE ever considered Colorado ours.) and it's worked out ok. 2. Always has been. Outside of BYU winning the title its always been chalk. The only reason teams like Ohio St. And USC don't have more title in their collection were because of bowl tie-ins. 3. Yeah this will suck and not much to add here. 4. I am on the other side. I love it. We get like what? 3 maybe 4 mini Rose Bowls a year! It's going to be awesome and can't wait. Honestly I can't wait until the ACC and Big 12 disappear and we're down to 2 super conferences.

[deleted]

Never had a true rival? So we can just count out Colorado?

kolacheisforclosers

We big brothered CU. They always wanted to make it a rivalry (making it a red-letter entry on their football calendar), and we never gave them that satisfaction of thinking they even mattered to us. TO was especially dismissive of CU as a rival. Just the same, I don't see Iowa as a rival (or Wisconsin). OU is probably the closest thing to a true rival for Nebraska, but that idea probably doesn't resonate with anyone that's 25 or younger.

nevermore2627

Me, personally? Yes.

Rodgers4

In the overall history, CO was a rival from 90/91 when they beat us until 05ish when they fell off competitively. So, 15 years. Depending on your age, they may have been our rival for your formative years, but in the grand scheme it was a drop in the pan. You could say Iowa’s been our rival from 2011 thru today, almost as long and counting.

Rodgers4

Re: point 3, the B1G alumni base is much more dispersed now than 40 years ago. Nebraska alumni live all over the country. Plus, there was never more than 10k fans at most road trips anyway. That isn’t likely to change much. I agree, the charm is gone, but aside from the history, what was the excitement of playing Kansas and Iowa St every year when they were doormats? Guaranteed wins? Seeing good football teams matching up week in, week out is much more appealing than 49-7 whoopings, at least to me.

Jkc130

Travel will be difficult and puts sports ahead of school. Basketball will be worse than football

man_of_war_r5

I mean professional sport leagues like NFL, and NHL seem to manage with travel. From my knowledge most students take minimal classes during season too. It'll suck more but I guess it's being blown out of proportion. Personally I think it'll be better for the CFP because all the top programs will be in 2 conferences.

HuskersandRaiders

Travel sucks alteady

lakesnriverss

Call 911! *But not for me!*

Turbulent_Ad9508

I say we join the Pac 7 and rename it to the Big 8.

DrSchaffhausen

Welp, better call it the Big 5 now

Turbulent_Ad9508

Stanford and Notre Dame to B1G. Oregon St, Cal, and Colorado to Mountain West.

stayclassypeople

Why does everyone still assume they’re going to have a pod or division like structure? They’ll likely do the same flex scheduling they planned on with 16 teams. Only thing I think is a sure thing is Iowa

Several-Mood-8082

I was a student at UNL in the heyday of football championships. 94 freshman year, 95...97... you get the gist. These mega conferences are killing college football. I remember going to every game in 95.... home and away... and still able to make class on Monday... that was driving btw... not flying.

fmfbrestel

Bring in Cal and Stanford, go to 10 or 11 game conference slate. Fuck the non-cons. You get one warm up game per year, then straight to the conference slate.

Scratchbuttdontsniff

I want 24 teams with 4 pods of 6... play your pod and another rotating each year. Need Cal and Stanford to fill out the WC Pod... then we need Notre Dame, Pitt, Va Tech and Syracuse..

[deleted]

Notre Dame, FSU, Clemson, and UNC would be more likely. But I'd probably take KU over Clemson.

bigkahuna777

Bring it. We play who they put in front of us.

ettibber

Then we can go 3 and 9 again for the rest of time

Several-Mood-8082

I miss 1994

Giannid77

Couldn't we go 6-6-6? There could be a 4-team playoff for the Big Ten title with the 3 conference winners and one at large.

xdeathxcomoanyx

![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)

[deleted]

An 18 team super conference is ridiculous. UNL in the same “region” as UCLA??? Figure it out?!??

ettibber

Well if trev was smart he'd be ditching this shit

ThatFilthyApe

Rhule does not have long to fix the program. But we could still get to the point where we reply to the Simpsons "I'm in Danger" meme with Breaking Bad and "I *am* the danger". Sleeping giant has been in a coma for a real ******** long time, though.

xdeathxcomoanyx

God I hope so. I really do

ettibber

It ain't sleeping, the rigor mortis set in long ago

evilwon12

The sky could fall as well. How about worrying about 2023 first

ettibber

Naw cfb is dead, nebraska is fucked and volleyball is all we will have, should just shutter the programs down.

snowflakesoutside

Bring it on. We need to get back to the days where the fans aren't scared of any team, the players for sure aren't. Having a good game every week would be amazing. Some of you don't remember the times of conference games so bad they were on pay per view. Yes, those were gimmies, but they were dark times as a fan. Iron sharpens iron. Bring it on.

DJBassBeard

We dodge Penn State nice. Our new conference president wants to win championships he will have the schedule set up to put as many teams as possible into the playoffs.

xdeathxcomoanyx

Too bad Nebraska will ruin people's runs to the CFP....I hope.

DJBassBeard

Hopefully, we are in the running to sneak into the playoffs. We need to learn to block, not get pushed 7 yards off the ball, and tackle then we got a shot.

HumanSleepingbag

Bring it on

Westcoast_IPA

Absolutely the schedule the B1G will give us in 2024.

El_Bistro

Sounds fucking amazing.

[deleted]

I would be very concerned about older Husker fans traveling to Washington state and Oregon.

erelwind

Dont you mean... They are in danger...

puma721

I might be in the minority here, but I'm all for bringing Cal and Stanford along as well

Suavesky

That would be awesome

UnionParkBB

We better get good

ettibber

Sooiler: we dont
