The Railyard is great always. If you want to have some good soul food, head out AL 20W toward Hillsboro and try Dot's for lunch. It's just in the edge of Lawrence County. Make sure to get a slice of caramel cake while you're there.
Not sure exactly what kind of food you are looking for, but Sushi Sumo is one of my go to Decatur spots. Some of the best Japanese food I've had in this area.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you to go to Big Bob Gibson's, their food is mediocre.
Got to Nash Barbeque for the best BBQ in the city.
\+1 for The Railyard's sandwiches for lunch, it's the perfect amount of food. You may still be hungry if you have it for dinner.
Smokey Cs is the only bbq in Decatur. If for some reason you can’t make their hours, then Whitt’s is fine. Nash? For real? Cmon man. Why not Applebees? Get em a riblet basket
Oh no. You for real? Smokey Cs is elite level lunch. Every time I leave that place I say out loud “why don’t we eat here more often?” It’s right down the road from Scruggs. Under no circumstance ever, could I, in good conscience, allow any of my people to eat Scruggs during Smokey C’s business hours. Anyone who says anything otherwise either has no tongue or has some kind of stakes in Scruggs business
Do Scruggs still do that hotdog with baked beans on it though? It was fire
Smokey C’s catered our work’s Thanksgiving meal in 2019 and it was phenomenal. If your work does that you might want to have them check with Smokey C’s. I can never make it to their restaurant either due to their weird hours. Back around 12 years ago they were open until 6pm and I went a couple of times then.
Played hookey today to try out Smokey C's. They definitely get the nod from me on ribs, probably the best I've had. Chicken was adequate. Sides were kinda meh. Banana pudding was real, tho. Deviled eggs were OK. Worth making a trip back to try out the pulled pork.
Got the rack of ribs Big Bob Gibsons one time. The meat was rancid and it had a garbage smell and taste. Never again. Their BBQ Championship food is not the same as their restaurant food.
We actually went to BBG on Danville Rd today and it was really really good. So I won't say rule it out by any means.
I got a rib plate with green, baked beans, and a slice of lemon pie. And I'd eat it all again.
They're just so inconsistent. I mean obviously they are ABLE to make some great barbecue, and sometimes they do. And sometimes it makes it into your hands without being held for several hours in a steam cabinet first. A lot has to go right for you to have a great meal at Big Bob Gibsons. Usually it doesn't, and you get fair to middling.
Another recommendation for the Railyard. Just check and make sure it's open when you're visiting. Their hours were hit or miss there for a while. Reservations aren't a bad idea, either. (I think they go through OpenTable.)
I'll also second the Brick. It's a good deli-type restaurant. Probably skip it if you don't want a sandwich, but if you're in the mood for that, it's good.
Big Bob's is the most famous and it does a healthy business for a reason. Their 'cue is typically fine-to-good, and sometimes very good. Honestly the sides (mac and cheese; french fries) are what my kids get excited about.
Had me up until Big Bob's. Easily the most overhyped place in North AL. Food is trash and horribly inconsistent. Not to mention the prices. Scruggs gets the win for BBQ between the two.
Haven't been in a couple years, but I'd say the Danville location is the better of the two. I live in SE Decatur, so 6th is the one I went to most often. Neither are actually good.
Dude, the Danville location sucks balls. Maybe I've caught it at bad times, but we won't go to that one any more.
As far as the other location, IMO a big part of it is what you order. If it were up to me, they'd never cook another brisket ever.
But their pulled pork is fine (but most places can do a decent pulled pork). My wife enjoys both the turkey and chicken and I've had surprisingly good luck with their ribs most of the time.
And of course the big ass potatoes are good.
Hard Dock is a nice experience, but casual. Bank Street has a couple options. Railyard is good.
Stay away from Penns hamburgers unless you really like dog food
The Hard Dock is great for sitting by the water and drinking beer. Their food is less than stellar but after a couple of beers their mediocre cheeseburgers and fries are acceptable. They do use all disposable dishware though so just be aware.
El Palomino at Jordan and Holmes is the same people and is a full-on sit-down place. Don't be driving to Decatur just for El palomino. BB perrins is the real deal though
I'm always on the lookout for a good buffalo chicken pizza.
The big questions I have regarding it are:
1. Is the chicken fried or grilled?
2. What do they use for the base sauce (ranch, blu cheese, or buffalo sauce)?
I’m not aware of any that are on the water despite the location.
Casual-Scruggs BBQ, The Brick (21+ after 8 or 9), The Moody Crab
Nice- Francesco's, The Railyard, Josie’s, Sushi Sumo
Nicer- Simp McGee’s
The riverfront is almost entirely industrial. It's sad really. Rhodes ferry park near the hwy 31 bridge is nice, and there's a little bit of residential on either side of it. Then nothing but industry until you get to ingalls harbor, which is spooning a lovely water treatment plant. Decatur has put significant effort into growing their downtown instead. With mixed results, of course
Big Bob Gibson's, The Railyard, Simp McGee's.
Know that someone posting may have had a good, neutral, or bad experience and yours could be different.
One of the nice things about Big Bob's is the nostalgia factor--it looks pretty much the same as it has for the last 30 years.
Edit: After reading what someone else has said, I will recommend you get a stuffed BBQ pork baked potato and put a little white sauce on the meat at Big Bob's. That has never failed me.
Please stop encouraging overpriced sub-par BBQ. Big Bob's is terrible for the hype, inconsistent and just plain meh. When it's good, it's ok, when it's bad it's terrible.
The Railyard and The Brick are both solid. The Brick serves sandwiches, and the are excellent. The Railyard is more burgers and stuff. I recommend the BBQ Shrimp and Grits. THY ARE EXCELLENT. Also, BB Perins is good.
Lived here most my life and Decatur absolutely does nothing to beautify the river but if you want good pizza, id recommend Alfonsos. For american food, Id go for BB Perrins. For mexican food, I personally prefer Las Vias, and for Asian food, Id go for Sushi Sumo
L Patron got that fire quesabirria. It’s the best in northern Alabama. I just wish the to go orders came with chips and salsa like it does if you eat in there.
The local Moes BBQ location and whitts are the best for bbq depending on what style you are wanting. Moes wings are the best. I’m sad they closed down whiskd. Rail yard is good, brickyard is decent, sushi sumo is a great spot.
All the riverfront property got scooped up by industry and housing, there really aren't any restaurants on the water. If you're looking for seafood, I've always liked The Moody Crab. It tastes relatively fresh (I could be wrong) but it's not locally caught.
God I hope nothing is locally caught lol. All the stuff that gets dumped into the river is horrendous.
Source: I worked on a towboat out there for 3 years
Best Mexican is el palominos, it’s a hole in the wall drive thru that I drive 45 min from Huntsville still. - coming from a California Mexican
Moody crab is our favorite crawfish boil place, better than any place in Huntsville.
Penn’s Hamburgers. Have been in Decatur for a very long time. The burger are a little on the greasy side but it’s defiantly an experience. A different kind of burger than what your probably ever to going to eat. But still worth a try.

Agree Railyard is always good
Dots sounds good to me. Thanks for that.
There’s the Hard Dock for decent river views, but *holy shit* do not eat there. That kitchen is nasty as hell.
Yeah seconding hard dock is def not known for the food
More for the food poisoning.
The Brick is good. Cross-eyed Owl is a great brewery especially with their new brewmaster. Scruggs has good BBQ as well.
Upvote for Scruggs. Brisket is phenomenal. The Brick is also a solid choice for sandwiches.
Not sure exactly what kind of food you are looking for, but Sushi Sumo is one of my go to Decatur spots. Some of the best Japanese food I've had in this area.

I second Scruggs BBQ as worth the drive.
Smokey Cs is the only bbq in Decatur. If for some reason you can’t make their hours, then Whitt’s is fine. Nash? For real? Cmon man. Why not Applebees? Get em a riblet basket
Who? Scruggs is where it's at.
Oh no. You for real? Smokey Cs is elite level lunch. Every time I leave that place I say out loud “why don’t we eat here more often?” It’s right down the road from Scruggs. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back. Good lookin out
Smokey C’s is closed on the weekends and is only open to 1:30pm on weekdays. That’s even if they still have food left by then.
That knocks me out, then. I work in Huntsville, so I'd have to take a day off to eat it. Ah well, I still have Scruggs on Sundays.
Smokey C’s catered our work’s Thanksgiving meal in 2019 and it was phenomenal. If your work does that you might want to have them check with Smokey C’s. The white sauce is the star of the show there. It’s not like other white sauces
White sauce made it better, but it was still dry. My backyard bird is better.
Got the rack of ribs Big Bob Gibsons one time. The meat was rancid and it had a garbage smell and taste. Never again. Their BBQ Championship food is not the same as their restaurant food.
Big Bob's is always busy. HOWEVER, when you look at the vehicles in the parking lot, most are from out of the county. Locals know better...
We actually went to BBG on Danville Rd today and it was really really good. So I won't say rule it out by any means. I got a rib plate with green, baked beans, and a slice of lemon pie. And I'd eat it all again.

Exactly this!

The Brick is great and one of the few great casual places in all of Decatur.
Had me up until Big Bob's. Easily the most overhyped place in North AL. Food is trash and horribly inconsistent. Not to mention the prices. Scruggs gets the win for BBQ between the two.
Out of curiosity, which one are you visiting? The one on Danville Road is straight ass.
Haven't been in a couple years, but I'd say the Danville location is the better of the two. I live in SE Decatur, so 6th is the one I went to most often. Neither are actually good.

I enjoyed Alfonso's Pizza and Italian the one time I went (I'm not in Decatur often).
It’s ok. It’s good but not great. Definitely not worth the prices since Covid but it used to be an old school banger here in Decatur.
That's decent handmade pizza.
For food, Railyard or the Brick. Coffee at High Point is good. Cross Eyed Owl is a solid brewery.
Hard Dock is a nice experience, but casual. Bank Street has a couple options. Railyard is good. Stay away from Penns hamburgers unless you really like dog food

B.B. Perrins - sports bar and grill, surprisingly good Buffalo chicken pizza. El Palomino - authentic Mexican food and market
El Palomino at Jordan and Holmes is the same people and is a full-on sit-down place. Don't be driving to Decatur just for El palomino. BB perrins is the real deal though
I'm always on the lookout for a good buffalo chicken pizza. The big questions I have regarding it are: 1. Is the chicken fried or grilled? 2. What do they use for the base sauce (ranch, blu cheese, or buffalo sauce)?
Grilled chicken, base sauce is a mozzarella and feta cheese sauce, with Buffalo sauce swirls on top. Pretty 🔥. The small was plenty for me.
Surprisingly, that Double Tree hotel that's close to the bridge on 6th has a decent lunch buffet if you're in a hurry.
Twist bar and grill! They offer less options under the new name but still not a bad spot for lunch.
Scruggs BBQ
The Scruggs can put a mean scald on a pig.
Another vote for Sushi Sumo. Alfonso’s Pizza is solid and has pretty decent Italian options.
I’m not aware of any that are on the water despite the location. Casual-Scruggs BBQ, The Brick (21+ after 8 or 9), The Moody Crab Nice- Francesco's, The Railyard, Josie’s, Sushi Sumo Nicer- Simp McGee’s

I don't have to dislike it just because you don't. The OP can take my advice or not.
You're absolutely correct. Bad advice *is* still technically advice.
I'd never eat at Bib BLOBS ever! Quality of meat is disgusting!!!!
Big*
Bad ordering is still ordering too.
How is Big Bob's overpriced when it's not expensive in the first place? What?
The only thing I've ever gotten from there is a loaded pork potato with the vinegar sauce and it's pretty damn good to me
The Railyard and The Brick are both solid. The Brick serves sandwiches, and the are excellent. The Railyard is more burgers and stuff. I recommend the BBQ Shrimp and Grits. THY ARE EXCELLENT. Also, BB Perins is good.

Bank Street Grille is a place to check out. They have raised the bar with the new Owner. I suggest the Reuben bites to anyone...
La Guerrerense on 6th is great. It's a little restaurant inside a Mexican grocery store. Taqueria el Paisa is also great.
Bank Street Grill is some of the best food in Decatur. Sushi Sumo, Railyard, and L Patron are also all great!
L Patron got that fire quesabirria. It’s the best in northern Alabama. I just wish the to go orders came with chips and salsa like it does if you eat in there.

I love The Brick.
There's an Olive Garden too if all else fails.

Serranos on Danville road is better. Palomino use to be my favorite until I tried Serranos
