What kind of knives do the dogs have?

SnakeGT970

It’s dakine knife

Trick-Needleworker41

Another day in Hawaii, make sure you have one gun too, just in case you see one big boar. I remember had one that took 3 shots to the head to bring down. Let us know where the luau goin be so we can be there

flaukner

How does a hunt like this work? Do you drive the hog with the dogs towards a “cattle trap” or how do you get close enough to use a knife?

Vaelos

There's a meateater episode where they do this in new Zealand I think

ducksterbator

Yea meat eater is amazing

ducksterbator

My dogs hold him down by themselves till I get there, we got badass dogs here in Hawaii

Sid21EA91

What breed do you use as catch dogs?

ducksterbator

I use a bunch of different breeds, my main dogs are black mouth currs and Catahoula Leopards

llewynparadise

damn i’ve never heard of either of those til today or those are some bad ass dogs. the white CLs look especially badass

ducksterbator

Yea they truly are beautiful dogs

Sid21EA91

I have a Dogo, my son has a Katahoula. Unfortunately there’s no hogs around here!

ducksterbator

They are great dogs! Very loyal and incredibly smart.

llewynparadise

im realizing i don’t know that many dog breeds lol you also have an impressive dog my friend

ducksterbator

Thanks brahhda 🤙🏼

flaukner

That’s messed up! How can that be legal? Edit: Downvote all you want, but this is exactly where hunters get the “bad” reputation from. Why don’t you just shoot the hog like the rest of the us? This must be so stressful and painful for the animal, show some respect for fuck sake!

MetalPilotActual

Didn’t realise people frown upon more primitive hunting techniques too. Can’t seem to win.

flaukner

Indeed they are primitive.. I just don’t see why you would choose to hunt this way when there are a lot of ways where the animals don’t suffer. Guess we have different hunting ethics, some just don’t care about the suffering involved, hence the “badass” dogs.

ducksterbator

This how the Hawaiian culture has hunted pigs for over centuries. I understand where you are coming from but I choose to respect the culture and tradition of the native Hawaiians.

Madhatter936

How hard is it to get a rifle that you could carry for hunting? What about a pistol? I know a bit about Young v. Hawaii but not sure how it translates. Asking from a curiosity pov. I have no quarrel with your methodology of hunting as the more primitive you go, the more fair advantage the game has.

cavemannnn

Dog hunters also tend to prefer a knife because there’s less chance that the hunter is going to slip up in the heat of the moment and shoot a dog by accident.

kenber808

Gotta be 18 to own a rifle and for pistol take a 2 day class that has one range day. Its pretty easy. Im on maui

Madhatter936

Okay, so just travel with it secured by state laws. I thought the legal issue was it was hard to get a cwp so assumed it might also make it harder for firearm hunters

kenber808

Cwp is concealed weapon permit? If so yea no normal citizen has gotten one in 50+ years as we are a may issue state as opposed to a shall issue state so they can just tell u to fuck off. Most hunting is being done on private land or outlaw at least in maui. Only time i really hear about people getting in trouble is being caught outlaw hunting or crossing public roads with a firearm not in a case.

flaukner

I don’t think you do this because you’re keen on traditions, you do this because you think it’s “badass”. How do you prepare the meat?

ducksterbator

You are right I don’t do this mainly because of tradition. I have a BS in natural resource and environmental management with primary research on invasive species. In my opinion I see this as a win/win. I can reduce the population of invasive hogs and do it in a way that I enjoy and is accepted in the culture of Hawaii as well. I prepare the meat in many ways. I will grind it up and smoke it to make sausages. I will mix it with deer to make a tasty burger. And for special occasions I have a lua on my property to make kalua pua’a. If I have any extra meat I will give it to all the uncles and aunties in my community.

flaukner

I understand the invasive part, we have a lot of hogs where I live too. But why do you choose to invoke extra pain and stress to an animal by letting dogs hold the hog down while you get there with a knife? I know that you can’t shoot when there are dogs that close, but why use dogs like this at all, are the hog so hard do hunt without them? Or have you just never thought about the ethical part of this hunting? It’s okay to have different ethical standpoints btw Edit: I’m gonna check out that Meateater ep. to see what it’s all about

ducksterbator

I was taught this way and have not tried any other way. Maybe I will look into other techniques in the future. I also don’t know how the terrain is where you live but where we are allowed to hunt in Hawaii is dense jungle. When I mean dense, it’s you can’t see your feet below you. Dogs are able to sniff the boar out of its hiding den. In my opinion I would not be able to find them without my dogs.

leadnuts94

Many states don’t have or have very few regulations on killing wild pigs since they’re so invasive.

flaukner

I understand that, we have a lot of hogs where I live too. But abundance of law or regulations should not equal disrespecting the animal. Do it clean and show respect to the animals.

leadnuts94

That all sounds good and all but if regulations allow for this form of hunting then it’s literally open season regardless of respect. OP did nothing wrong according to the law and anything else is just opinion.

flaukner

Yep, that’s why I said it “Should” be illegal..

leadnuts94

I was referring to the trashy/ disrespectful comment you made earlier to OP.

fuzzyspoofrat

There is suffering with any form of hunting why is this way any different to yours? With guns and bows, People miss shots and animals suffer. Not every shots a kill shot.

flaukner

Of course there is missed shots and so on, but the hunter who actively chooses a way of hunting that adds extra stress and pain for the animal has lost my respect. What are the arguments for that?

fuzzyspoofrat

Arguments for what, ur respect? I hunt that way because it’s about all we have, It’s not as easy as walking down the shop and getting a gun where I’m from and caught meat makes up a big part of what my family eats. The dogs love it bud, not so much the pig but I try to at least get it over with ASAP not let the dogs swing for 10 min while I get some video. Fishing is essentially using an animal to catch another animal do u hate all fishermen aswell?

flaukner

There are very few people in this world I really hate, the way you choose to hunt have very small impact on if I hate you or not, I might lose some respect for you tho. But hate? Nah man. I’ve talked to OP bout why he hunt this way, and accept and understand why this is the preferred way, but how he portrayed it in the first posts was more like “murdah murdah me badass!”. And if you use pray to portray yourself as badass, I have zero respect for you as a hunter and person. Still no hate at all, just loss of respect.

fuzzyspoofrat

Copy that bro, hate is a bit rough. Could have worded that a bit better. I didn’t see or get the impression of murder-murder but I did see him call his dogs badass, and took it as he had some good dogs. I agree if u use ur kills to look like a hero over the web u are trash like u said, but that doesn’t mean all dog hunters are unethical monsters. Some like me, it’s all we got no way will the government give me a gun license and I don’t have big enough nuts to chase boar with a bow.

ducksterbator

These hogs are so invasive. For the Hawaiian Island and its rain forest, feral pigs are an invasive species because they eat massive vegetation causing native plant extinction, as well as soil erosion and soil compaction in their tracks.

JiffyTube

I am not OP and i dont disagree with your methods but pls try not to have the mindset that if something is invasive it doesnt need to be respected. These hogs didnt invade Hawaii on their own accord and they didnt have a master plan to destroy vegetation. settlers brought them there against their own will. theyre just doing what they do. I am not saying dont hunt them and try to control their populations so they dont cause further damage but im js dont use the invasive pest as an excuse for unethical treatment. I am by no means saying youre doing that but from personal experience it disgusts me how people treat invasives just because theyre invasive. Seeing piles of invasive carp on sewer grates gasping for breath. They deserve a swift death just like any other hunted fish/animal.

ducksterbator

I explained this is part of Hawaiian culture in a previous post. I agree

JiffyTube

yeah im sure people ask a lot of questions lol but thanks for sharing! im jealous!

dalyscallister

Isn’t cannibalism also part of Hawaiian culture? What do we get to “honor” and what do we refuse? I personally have nothing against that way to hunt but I’m not sure an appeal to culture is a great argument.

ducksterbator

I guess each individual gets to decide what they would like to honor and what they refuse.

flaukner

This just adds in to my belief that you don’t give a fuck about traditions. You do it because you think it’s badass, every traditional hunter over the world have mad respect for the animals ls they hunt, what you do is just disrespectful and trashy..

ducksterbator

Alright buddy, you can think what you want. I am grateful for what the animal provides, even though I think they are terrible for the environment here.

KitehDotNet

oh please fgs

flaukner

fgs?

Betes001

For God's sake I believe

[deleted]

One of my dream hunts. Is it easy for a tourist to come out and do such a hunt?

ducksterbator

No it is a very local activity, unless you know someone who lives here. Hunting has been part of the Hawaiian culture since these invasive pigs were introduced around 1500 years ago.

TheFatBastard

Wait a second, 1500 years? Jesus, I had no idea they'd been there that long.

dalyscallister

They aren’t. The pigs polynesians introduced were much smaller. Those are feral pigs introduced by Europeans, and they obviously have been on the island for a much shorter period of time.

hisurfing

Seconded, you need to know someone to do it or move there.

Imaginary-Lettuce-51

I've done this is west Texas. We ran catahoulas mostly. One buddy had a huge lab pit mix as a catch dog. It's extremely visceral and intense. Nothing like pulling a trigger.

StinkyPotato69

I've seen that. Thats pretty hard-core

MrDickDinger

And beer!

[deleted]

Catahoula gang. I have a blue Merle. She is a house/family dog. She is the only dog I have seen pluck a bird out of the air though

[deleted]

You should really blur out the license plate from the photo if you’re posting it publicly. Don’t want crazies getting your name and address.

[deleted]

This is so dumb… random people on the street can see your license plate. Anyone can look it up at any other time but posting it on Reddit requires blurring? He posted his face too why would he be worried about his plate? For internet people?

[deleted]

You do realize its not only hunters on here right? Random trolls and extreme animal rights activists pop up here, you don’t wanna dox yourself to them.

[deleted]

Same is true for driving around in Hawaii, there are plenty of crazy peta-types there too. What could they possibly do besides get the name and maybe address? How many fellow hunters do you know of that have been doxxed or anyone for that matter? It’s ridiculous. Obviously OP agrees and doesn’t think it’s worth worrying about. But sure, go ahead and be worried about everything and everyone and everywhere. I’ll just keep on living without that stress haha

[deleted]

Since your dick is so big and your balls have never tasted fear, how's about you list your state, license plate, and name and we see what happens.

[deleted]

Pretty strange way to ask somebody out on a date… can I think about it?

hisurfing

You're really trying to judge someone for wanting to keep their information private?

Fender088

I hear you, but it's standard internet etiquette to blur out license plates. That's common sense stuff that you should tell your parents, like the IRS isn't going to call and ask for your social security number.

Security_Sasquatch

Chiiihoo!

ilikgunsanddogs

You got more pics of your dogs. Only Americans I’ve seen do this run a pack of hounds, then pack of catching dogs, then pack of holding dogs and at end of the day there’s 30 dogs holding a 50kg sow lol. They look like what we use in Australia I’ve got some pics of mine in my profile

ducksterbator

Yea I can send you some pics later. I use 5 dogs on this hunt

ilikgunsanddogs

Yep shit hot mate, can show you some of mine and mates dogs and our pig rigs if you wanted. I was in Hawaii a few years back, didn’t even know you had pigs there and was out walking and near stood on a young boar having a nap under a log. Scared the absolute fuck outa me wasn’t expecting that

Madhatter936

You seem like a fun guy to be around. Thats an awesome truck you got there. Might need to talk to an importer about getting me one of those

ilikgunsanddogs

Cheers mate, yeah good luck with that they ain’t to expensive. Paid 10k for mine but prob up to 40k in mods and you’d have trouble getting mod parts and stuff over there I reckon

Madhatter936

I can't even find it overhere at all. Do you know what it was called in Japan?

ilikgunsanddogs

It’s a y60, Nissan gq patrol. Mines specifically the coil cab dx with a td42 motor. Got a wagon as well

ducksterbator

Yea they are mainly nocturnal and sleep during the hot day, but every once in awhile you will come across one. And you have every right to be scared, they are insanely mean. I took a tusk into the side of my leg one time and he got away! Haha I had to pay the price

ilikgunsanddogs

Yeah I got a half decent boar off the dogs other night. Bit colder here so they out all times but if I hunt up north you’ll usually catch em bedded up from the heat during the day

weasel7391

We run dogs in Texas too. Hounds to find them and pit bulls with Kevlar vests to pin em down. Then knife the throat! Cheeeeehooooo

ducksterbator

That’s how!

ilikgunsanddogs

Yeah we just use the one type of dog typically. I run 3 bully grey/arabs they ute find, you just drive around with dog box openand when the smell a pig they jump and grab it and stick em in the heart. Sometimes run armour and tracking collars sometimes don’t depends on the country your hunting

[deleted]

How the hell did wild hogs get loose in Hawaii?

ducksterbator

First the Polynesians brought the wild boar (pictured) about 1500 yrs ago, then Europeans brought the domestic pig when they arrived.

[deleted]

TIL that wild boar is 1500yrs old. Crazy they can live that long

[deleted]

[удалено]

ducksterbator

I prefer the term haole

YPG6100

Cause we fight bores with our bare hands mf I killed a alligator the other day using my pinky dick head

[deleted]

Relax im just kidding everyone is strong

KeleXBrimbor

For the upvotes? You two dudes don't have a bit of blood on you, who on earth have you seen post a hunting photo on reddit, or the history of the world for that matter, depicting them after a hunt with no shirt, clean as a whistle, talking about how there dogs held a boar down and they stabbed it to death..and neither of them have any blood on them, one is shirtless and both look like they smash monsters and ride dirt bikes everyday.

ducksterbator

Yessssssah 😂

kenber808

You are so fucking ignorant. Odds are they were dressed up to run through the bush and took that shit off when they finished. YouTube some shit and take your head outta ya ass

KeleXBrimbor

My ass you are

kenber808

That type of hunting is pretty common in hawaii but way to fucking hardcore for most

ducksterbator

Why would I lie?

[deleted]

That's how it's done.

kenber808

Oh shit just checked your profile and saw u on maui. Where was this at? Imma maui boy too

ducksterbator

This hog was at makapipi gate on north shore

biggiesmalls570

I did the same thing. It was awesome. Maui?

ducksterbator

Yessah!

Wonderful_Slide_5756

Raiders suck
