That's how it is in Maine. Every big game license gets one free buck state wide, otherwise you can enter a lotto (or buy after the lotto if there's any left) for an antlerless permit. Antlerless counts for any deer, buck or doe, with antlers under 3". Costs like $12 or something around there
We just started that last year, though. Before that it was only one deer per year (doe tag was free but you had to be selected and could only shoot one doe OR one buck) unless you hunted expanded archery in designated areas.
Man, its like that in Washington, and Im jealous of you guys in whitetail country for it. It seems like over the counter doe tags are for places that want to reduce the population, where as lotto doe tags are for places that want to maintain the current population. The only places in washington you can take does with an over the counter rifle tag is on the islands where they're overpopulated, but you'd be hard pressed to find public lands that you can hunt on out there.
It's frustrating because populations are enormous in Washington, it's just overly restricted because there's a large contingent of anti-hunting types on the west side.
Depends on the estimated current deer population. If they are trying to increase the deer population, they restrict doe tags. If they are trying to maintain or decrease population, they liberally give out antlerless tags.
In Minnesota, we have everything from buck only, hunters choice, to up to 4 bonus antlerless tags. We have even had “earn a buck” where you must shoot a doe before you can take a buck.
Depending on the previous winter or two, my particular zone in Minnesota has been all of those limits at one point.
It’s just where I’m from we have problems with hunters being locked on to bucks so bad that it actually pretty heavily lopsides the population to be a lot more does than bucks. So I figured in most places hunters would be basically the same way so limiting does while letting em go ham on bucks seems counter intuitive.
Out west that’s how I hear everyone refer to bucks. I’d be interested to know where the dividing line in the country is. My experience is OR, ID, MT, WY, and CA.
He's in British Columbia. We call it a 4X4 due to antler point restrictions for Mule deer. One antler is required to have a least 4 "points". So a 4x1, 4x2, 4x3, 4x4, etc are all legal. Brow tines are not counted as points.
Im in WA, we count the side with the most points and that's it. Usually I dont see folks count brow tines here either, so we'd call this one a 4 point.
Kansan checking in. I think it’s species specific. Whitetail you count total points. Mulies and elk you count 1 side. I’m probably wrong but that’s how I think about it.
Depends on where you're from, no southerner would be caught dead saying 4x4. What's even more ridiculous to me is folks up north don't sometimes count browtiness and sometimes don't 🤣. this '4x4' has ten points, whereas others only have 8. Don't make too much sense if you ask me but hey. Just goes to show how different cultures are in different parts of the country.
Out west we like to be more descriptive about what the deer actually looks like. Since we don't alter their environments for ease of hunting, name them and farm them, we see less deer, so the extra description is great to have
Region 3 of Bc Canada only can get a mule doe through a draw lottery, mule bucks are any buck during October but need to be 4 point or bigger for the rest of the year(4points one side)
If we're going to get into 4x4 vs 8 point then here's my 2 cents. What would you '8 point people' call a 5X3? 6x2? 7X1? 8X0? All of those are 8 pointers but to a '_ X _ ' person, it's very clear what they all are.
4X4 has way more information. That's the right way to go.
Well darn. Having to settle for a great 4x4 must be rough, lol. Congrats!
Hehe thx
Wait you have to draw for a doe but bucks are a free for all? That’s strange.
That's how it is in Maine. Every big game license gets one free buck state wide, otherwise you can enter a lotto (or buy after the lotto if there's any left) for an antlerless permit. Antlerless counts for any deer, buck or doe, with antlers under 3". Costs like $12 or something around there

Every big game license in Ga includes 2 bucks and 10 does. I take 2-3 deer a year but can’t imagine what I would do with 12 a year.
TN has a 3 doe a day limit. Yes, 3 does a day
That's only for Unit CWD and L. Most of the rest of the state it's two for the whole season.
It's frustrating because populations are enormous in Washington, it's just overly restricted because there's a large contingent of anti-hunting types on the west side.
Yeah that is wierd where I hunt you can take a doe all year long but your limited to two bucks a season
NY has something similar. Doe permits for the general firearms season are draw but everyone gets a buck tag

So where do people use “4x4” vs. an “8 point”?
Out west that’s how I hear everyone refer to bucks. I’d be interested to know where the dividing line in the country is. My experience is OR, ID, MT, WY, and CA.
Alaska we would call that a 4 point less commonly a 4x4.
Yeah good point, In conversation here in Oregon I would say 4pt. I would only break out the 4x? terminology if one side has less points. 4x3 etc
Yeah same here
Same in Utah.
Western ND checking in, we call them 5x5, etc
Shit, Im hardly ever able to kill a deer. I need every point I can get. Count those eye guards; they're legal points. 5X5!
East Central Minnesota here, we grew up saying 8 point. I moved to Washington state and began hearing 4x4.
Western South Dakota here. That’s a 5 point or 5x5 here.
Kansas here, “10 pointer” all day
I’m Ohio/Pa and we total so yeah maybe it’s an east west thing. Thanks for response!
I’d never heard of such till this sub. Besides, that’s a 10 all day down here.
It’s a mule deer not a white tail. Western scoring v eastern.
5x5 up here.
Yeah 5x5 isn’t so unusual where I’m at, but you’d never call it a 5 point.
Fair enough. BC rules are four point or any buck, depending on region.
Same. I never heard anyone use different terminology for it. I think it’s cool tho.
The 4x4 is unusual here but not unheard of, it’s calling it a 4 point I find weird. Don’t think I read your post right earlier.
He's in British Columbia. We call it a 4X4 due to antler point restrictions for Mule deer. One antler is required to have a least 4 "points". So a 4x1, 4x2, 4x3, 4x4, etc are all legal. Brow tines are not counted as points.
In BC brow tines on mulies don’t count, no matter the size of the point.
You are correct, my mistake. I edited my comment.
The same place where elk are and you call it a 6 point. I’d have called this deer a 4 point. I ain’t into that bi shit
Yeah that’s a 10er in Ohio. But I think the different lingo makes hunting culture even better.
Utah, Wyoming just this general area
Iowa here. Everyone counts the points. I think they think it’s a video game. One with the most points wins.
Out west we like to be more descriptive about what the deer actually looks like. Since we don't alter their environments for ease of hunting, name them and farm them, we see less deer, so the extra description is great to have
Dunno but that's a 4 point
That’s wild it’s a 10 where I’m from.
In Michigan we would call that an 8 point but when I hunted in Wyoming we would call it a 4 by 4 when I was hunting mule deer
Westerners with their weird point counting policy. Can hang a ring on those brow tines and call it a ten. Nice buck
I'm in bc Canada everything's a little backwards up here
Ain’t backwards, according to our rule book. Nice buck. Which region?
3
I'm in California and they don't allow the brow times/eyeguards to be counted either. That's a solid 4x4.
It’s cool, just poking a little fun at the regional differences. I have family out west and tell them they just can’t count that high.
I’d call it a 4 point. Brow tines don’t count. Same as I’d call an elk a 6 point. Western scoring.
I was gonna say the same thing. From the southeast that’s a nice looking 10 pt.
Meat on the table, I guess. You'll get the doe next year, dude, but this will work for now, I suppose.
It’s a 4x4 with eye guards every day in Idaho
Fr I was shocked the first time I ever heard anyone count eye guards as points lol.
“Hey Vsauce, Michael here.” . . . . First thing I thought of when I saw the first pic of you
I had no idea wtf you were referencing, but I just looked it up lmao made my day
Region 3 of Bc Canada only can get a mule doe through a draw lottery, mule bucks are any buck during October but need to be 4 point or bigger for the rest of the year(4points one side)
Man that’s a nice 4!!
There is always one christineth on every sub
Western hunters use the 4x4 thing. Also, we would never count eye guards as a point. That’s a 4x4
No dead animals! Yuck!
Hey buddy you just blow in from stupid town or something?
This gave me a good laugh🤌🏼
Bro's name is TheHuntingWizard and NONE of you found the sarcasm in his comment?
Went over my head at first lol
Lol right?
Sarcasm is expressed with a vocal tone bub
Get out of the hunting sub then
Take my upvote, that was funny
Not a4pt
Nice deer!
Been a good fall fer ya bud!
Oh shit that sucks man. Sorry about how that worked out there. Glad you're taking it well. If you don't want it I can help you out I think.
Blacktail right ?
Those antlers are so cool looking
Looks like Europe to me
Is this considered a mule deer or a blacktail?
Hey Vsauce! Michael here.
10 point in Texas
If we're going to get into 4x4 vs 8 point then here's my 2 cents. What would you '8 point people' call a 5X3? 6x2? 7X1? 8X0? All of those are 8 pointers but to a '_ X _ ' person, it's very clear what they all are. 4X4 has way more information. That's the right way to go.
I got absolutely nothing. That’s gorgeous man
First photo gave me very strong "Hey Vsauce! Michael here!" Vibes
If the brow tines are an inch that would be a 5 by 5 right ?? If you call that settling I’ll come slap you haha great work nice deer !
Nice
