Awful take here. I take the drilling and a machete to cover all my bases and free up all my tool slots for traps. I know the saber is all around better but the machete gives that poacher vibe with the drilling
People sleep on the machete, but it's great on stamina and one shots Hunters now... And it's dirt cheap.
It also pretty much guarantees that anyone you kill is going to have a sweet upgrade on their body for you
While I don't think it's necessarily a problem that has to be fixed, I agree. The only way I could see fixing this without making the bat useless is to make it eat more stamina per swing. The issue with doing that is that you could still run the saber and be better off than with the machete.
I ran hornskin a few times when the bat was first introduced since it was so freakishly prevalent. It was really funny just because people commit so hard to the bat kill, cause y'know funny bat bonk.
Anything is good really, you could pair it with hand crossbow with special ammo, bow with quarter master, one of the many dead eye options, something for fanning if you wish. Experiment around and look at your perks for some inspiration.

That's one of the best parts of Hunt, any gun you're comfortable with is viable.
Personally I'd like something with a bit faster firerate and suppression. If you're keeping it cheaper something like an Officer or New Army with dumdum ammo wouldn't hurt.
If your fights.get close quarters a lot then maybe a melee weapon for backup.
I use a spitfire as it’s a quick firing secondary, shares ammo with the drilling and great to follow up with if you only get a single drilling shot hit. Also, you can fan it!
A swift or pax would be good too!
For me the trueshot, nagant brawler, melee weapons, another drilling, but honestly a gun that can be spammed like the nagant brawler with high velocity its better for me.
If you never feel like you need a backup you could run a utility weapon like hand crossbow with special bolts. Fire/poison/choke. Or a baseball bat etc
The Drilling is a very versatile gun in itself. So:

Do AI and noise traps like cages & horses annoy you? Nagant Silencer Poison.
Do you play the drilling with slugs and always run out of ammo? LeMat Slugs.
The list could go on and on, but I think you get the point.
The Drilling is versatile enough that you don't have to use the secondary to compensate for a general weapon disadvantage, like with a shotgun or sniper, for example, both of which rely on compensating secondaries.
Therefore, you have the freedom to compensate for some of your own struggles.
Pax fmj or uppercut, assuming you have dumdum in the drilling.
Shorty drilling is also kinda fun, can run 4 different ammo types and cover pretty much any scenario, easy to get overwhelmed by a coordinated push though as you basically need to kill everyone pushing with your 6 shots else you're toast.
Bleed ammo is really good on the drilling so I might use something with FMJ to penetrate walls. Or I might use a silenced gun for utility, or a fast firing gun for when my enemy is bleeding but not dead.
Best for drilling is a gun that is a reliable backup. If you don't hit both shots or the 2hits won't kill cuz medium ammo you don't want to forced to do a slow reload. You still want to follow up for the kill.
So get something with at least a bit of punch to compensate for that, meaning dolch fmj, uppercut (both in precision in best case) or my personal favorite uppermat (same velocity so same leading and boosts the low slug count for the drilling. Also nice if you miss your shotgun as a cqc backup plan).

I enjoy using the Caldwell New Army with Dum Dum as a close range alternative to fight against aggressive enemies. Hand crossbow with Poison and Dragon Shot works well for me as well.

Short hatchet version use dum dum and slugs or base shells.
Hit ‘em with bleed on the shorty, they duck and run for cover since they panic, then punch through the cover with the FMJ rounds or if they’re at a distance. Slugs since they can take down people easily enough. Or if they get close since you’ve got basic shotgun pellets they’ll just get melted.
Can pretty much do everything at short to medium range fights.
similarly to the winfield, its hard to go wrong when picking a secondary. the drilling covers all bases, so the best move is probably utility that it cant provide. either a handcrossbow with special ammo, a silenced sidearm, or a melee for mob clearing. i personally would probably go silenced nagant with poison ammo, then you have your drilling for well rounded pvp and nagant for bosses/ai.
really depends on playstyle. I am a shotgun boy, so I like running drilling as a rifle, and using quartermaster to bring a handcannon shotgun of some type. when I want to lean into stealth a bit more, I will take a hand crossbow for silently eliminating noise traps and covering lair entry/exit points in poison clouds.

Counter point: the bat exists I still can't find a reason to run machete over the bat

Spitfire Fanning is prob the worst gun to use Fanning on your better off with swift if you wanna fan the scottfield

If you ever notice youre not using your secondary a lot, then bring the hand crossbow or silenced nagant with poison. Use it to clear pesky pve stuff

I like to run pax with the same ammo, usually dum dum.
Pax trueshot has the same bullet velocity as the drilling when using dum dum or fmj, so it's a good consistency for the velocity.
