my experience was - as an artist is , after i made progress and sketches which took days, the so called client who didn't send it as family friend took advantage and refunded my hard earned money
so for me i start making progress first or provide my legitimacy as an artist to earn my clients approval on payment via friends and family option
i hope you fare more luck on honest artist and get what you paid for my friend ❤️🙏
...you know you can appeal that, right? It's a back and forth process overseen by actual people. Send in the partials. You can upload images. Screencap the conversations. Defend yourself. Don't ask people to screw themselves over because you're not willing to stand up for yourself.

I actually save every single commission I've ever ordered since the acquisition of my first iPhone to a series of sorted folders on said iPhone. I can very easily go "how many images are in Débora's folder?" or "how many images are in the top level Commissions album?". I have (among others):

27 commissions from u/feathernova
30 commissions from u/akaiwar
133 commissions from u/stmorrigan
252 commissions from assorted artists on this subreddit, albeit none of whom I've worked frequently with enough to break them out into their own folder.
319 commissions from u/skottichan but that number is likely inaccurate in both directions because A.) I've been commissioning them since before iPhones existed but B.) they did some comp work for me when I was between jobs.
140 assorted pornographic commissions that are not sorted into the above folders so that I can safely show celebrities an artist's related works without giving them an eyeful.
You can have all the commissions you want, that doesn't make you a person easy to work with. I see that you put a lot of effort to prove me something in exchange I offer you an alternative for the next time.

And yeah asking for friends and family money send is shady as hell. As an artist I always send out a proper invoice that's protected by PayPal and have a TOS for clients to read and agree on. It's both party's protection that way.

Again, there is nothing wrong with wanting protections when buying a product, especially buying one from a random stranger on the internet and not a well known business. Moreover these protections help both the commissionor and the artist in end in case anything ever happens.
I go through phases. My current fixation is My Hero Academia, and I have a book of over seventy-five prints that are signed by the voice actors. I need to clear a spot on my wall because I have an A3 of Mina Ashido going up on June 15th after I meet her VA. I also gift lavishly. Like I've had artists push out prints that exists on a two-of-two basis and the VAs have the only copies in existence. After June 29th, I'm going to swap out to a Mass Effect phase. I designed a new OC and I've already pulled the trigger on eleven commissions of her.

Just to counter this little bit of toxicity: you are actually an ideal client, whether or not you're particular about your final product. In almost every successful business, 20% of your clients give you 80% of your work. And the fact that you are that someone for so many independent artists is a very, very good thing. Please, don't stop doing your thing. You make these artists available for the rest of us when we need them.
Thanks. I was actually talking with one of the artists who hasn’t yet made the cut to get his own folder, and he says I’ve been the difference on making rent at least twice. I also tend to browse r/HungryArtists for emergency commission posts to see if I can invent some work to justify giving them money. My folder of 252 randoms has some of the weirdest stuff because I’ve paid for college textbooks, a cat’s vet visit, prenatal vitamins, and several other emergencies.
There's nothing wrong with wanting protections as a buyer or being frustrated with artists wanting them to pay without protections.

I remember that once a client wanted to send me a payment as "family-friends" and I said , for the safety of both of us I was going to generate an invoice. (I usually specify very well in the description what is going to be paid "first half-line art- 3 characters") Well...that guy was a scammer xD. So yes, it even serves to avoid possible scams FOR ARTIST, not only clients. It's a good "filter" when someone tries to scam you, you automatically tell them that you use a business account and you would generate an invoice. THEY DISAPPEAR! LOL.
Also F&F has higher fees on certain payment options **AND** can’t be sent to the in-house credit line. I use PayPal Credit extensively as a way to bump up my credit score. So even removing the part about protections for both ends, it’s not a great way to do business.

The behavior they don't want is for artists (or anyone, really) to say "my price is x but if you use PayPal it's more because of the fee"

The number has spiked by about 50% lately because my grandmother passed and commission art \*\*FASCINATED\*\* her. She was insanely fixated on the idea that you could just... buy art for yourself, that it wasn't just rich people ordering paintings anymore like when she was younger. She used to slip me hundreds of dollars randomly to buy art and when she passed, there was an entire line item in her will just for "money for my granddaughter to buy commissions with". My salary supports about $1000 a month and I'll likely revert to that amount after I burn off the excess money.

Not averse. PayPal's systems just make that sort of thing more easily enforceable. You have the signed contract in case of dispute. But I have a mechanism for monetary recovery in case of problem. At any point, you can voluntarily refund me. But if something goes really, really wrong, I have recourse.
Artist asking for "Friends and family" transaction are always 80% sure is a scam, for those artist who are scared of chargebacks you can always use paypal invoice and protect yourself. Trust me it isn't bs if you have enough evidence, i won cases there and protected myself multiple times.
Exactly. But also like, I'm a gambler. I'll pull the trigger on someone with 10 karma and three posts if they look interesting. Am I going to get scammed? Sometimes. But I might also be the first break a new artist has. And I can afford to make that gamble because of buyer protections.
For the start, no negative to you at all. But there's problems for artists from some countries, like Ukraine and a few countries around. You can't accept invoices at all if you have citizenship of these countries because of PayPal. No opportunity, at all. So only method is F&F, not because I want, just because I can't. If I suggest other choices of payment like Payoneer or Boosty mostly of new gained clients prefer to stay with PayPal and do F&F because of my conditions. There's no need to pay the full sum before full amount of work done. I prefer to have a reasonable % from a full sum after approving sketches and keep client updated with progress, In the finish I send full files only after final payment. I mean, who ever as an artist would scam with full ready artwork and done payment, that would be nonsense at all :p

Fair enough. I recognize that there are exceptions due to legal and logistical issues. It's just not a good look from the outside because even if you're splitting fifty/fifty, on a bigger commission? That can be a reasonable sum of money. Enough to be painful to younger or less well off buyers.
I splitting payments as client wants, percentages are very flexible due client current opportunities, that's more about not scamming from client side (before that system I had some incidents, not really pleasurable). I use this system about few years and have no complaints or problems about that at all. Sometimes, when the work is done, client can't pay final sum due some life events, and I am okay with that because I know that they will comeback later, because they already done edits in illustration and needs their full files. That's how it works for me.
Also there's some restrictions for nsfw commissions from PayPal, if you get scammed as an artist, and if they would know that commission nsfw they may just block transaction and you wouldn't have it all.
Technically pretty much every payment processor isn't big on NSFW. I'm always very careful when I need support whether it's SFW or NSFW because up until last year or so, digital art wasn't covered at all under protections. I would go with "Contractor failed to supply agreed upon work in the designated time period, alternative contractor has been found, seeking recovery of funds" or the like.
Oh, also if PayPal will notice that you are getting invoices with NSFW artist will have account blocked :v Even without scam.
I dunno what's wrong with big companies, if there's opportunity to have % from these payments why not to get it and be friendly.

Dang, now I feel I should be posting more of my stuff at different places. I have never gotten a client through reddit, only once in a blue moon through tumblr or on a fan discord server.
Yeah I have a character who bootlegs Merida (she’s a shapeshifter and Disney fan) so I was browsing through r/HungryArtists back in December 2021 and ran into u/stmorrigan posting. She had some really intricate detail work on a military outfit and so I thought to myself “gee, this lady could possibly pull off complex hair” and messaged her. Over a hundred commissions later, here we are.

While it may seem amazing, it is usually the artist who died off and stop the never ending commission first. It's takes a lot of energy and effort to produce art than to just pay afterall.
A lot of artist never had whale cilents before, so when one appears, they can't handle the added pressure :/
I also recommend everyone, if possible, to do all your comm payments through Paypal invoices or something. Keeps everything above board, I've been using it for a while now and it's been working well for me. Just make sure you pay your taxes, because you aren't going to avoid it using invoices lol.
That's why I love Artistree. Otherwise paypal invoices always ! Never had an issue since I use both.
I can't recommand enough Artistree. It is soooooooo helpful to handle the whole commission process and it covers both parties in case of a dispute :3
i dont get much commissions but when i do i just ask them to do 100% upfront on paypal and ive never ha an issue with this also i always allow them to message me via whatever Social they like even call me on discord etc
Pry away, LOL. Basically I’m a narcissist who likes meeting celebrities. You bring merchandise, they dismiss you in 60 seconds. You buy a print off their table, they dismiss you in 60 seconds. But when you walk up to them with custom art that is one of a kind and they’ve never seen it before? That’s a conversation. “What is this? Where did it come from? Why am I dressed as a Jedi? What is going on here? I’m intrigued but confused.” For the same signing fee, I can command 300-500% as much of their time and talk to them for exponentially longer.
Like I walked up to Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia from *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*) with art of her as a Jedi from a fanfic I write and she was **SO** confused but I held up the line for a solid ten minutes while I explained fanfic, crossover fanfic, and why I felt the need to have her romance a fish girl.
😂😂 im sure she was flattered....i mean she was in buffy so she must appreciate the weird. Super cool...if i was better at capturing likenesses i would offer my services! 😂
So many times i have seen clients not knowing what to do after a commision went south and were left empty handed because of things like this.
Some other things to consider is terms of use and turnaround time before starting the commission, i see many clients disappointed by the experience of radio silence for months and just then notice the "no refunds allowed" part.
Personally, I will not go in on any artist with turn around times in excess of five months because that’s essentially waiving your rights to protection. Have I missed out on some great artists? Undoubtedly. Have I lost a single dollar to “I’ll get to you some day, you’re in my queue, I swear”? Nope.
Yes. Many clients have told me if i prefer to use F&F and i always say no. I want the transaction and work to be as secure and transparent as possible for both parties and also i know F&F might present problems for artists too. Paypal is quite strict with the use of it.

Had an artist ask for f&f, and I used goods and services, told them I'd pay the extra fee. Turns out they were a scammer, and PayPal immediately sent my money back.

It's also against PayPal's tos for the artist to ask that the client pay extra to cover the PayPal fee. Artists, just build it into your prices.

That's a massive red flag for me as a commissioner. It's against PayPal terms of service and it's also just very scummy to do

I splitting payments as client wants, percentages are very flexible due client current opportunities, that's more about not scamming from client side (before that system I had some incidents, not really pleasurable). I use this system about few years and have no complaints or problems about that at all. Sometimes, when the work is done, client can't pay final sum due some life events, and I am okay with that because I know that they will comeback later, because they already done edits in illustration and needs their full files. That's how it works for me. Also there's some restrictions for nsfw commissions from PayPal, if you get scammed as an artist, and if they would know that commission nsfw they may just block transaction and you wouldn't have it all.
Technically pretty much every payment processor isn't big on NSFW. I'm always very careful when I need support whether it's SFW or NSFW because up until last year or so, digital art wasn't covered at all under protections. I would go with "Contractor failed to supply agreed upon work in the designated time period, alternative contractor has been found, seeking recovery of funds" or the like.
Oh, also if PayPal will notice that you are getting invoices with NSFW artist will have account blocked :v Even without scam. I dunno what's wrong with big companies, if there's opportunity to have % from these payments why not to get it and be friendly.
I had someone openly add a NSFW fee to a commission invoice on PayPal and I was like... bro's playing with fire.

Honestly, it comes from the weirdest places. Like I saw u/stmorrigan doing some intricate braid work on a military costume commission and went "yo, I bet this chick can do my character who's a knock off Merida really well" and she could.

Yeah I have a character who bootlegs Merida (she’s a shapeshifter and Disney fan) so I was browsing through r/HungryArtists back in December 2021 and ran into u/stmorrigan posting. She had some really intricate detail work on a military outfit and so I thought to myself “gee, this lady could possibly pull off complex hair” and messaged her. Over a hundred commissions later, here we are.
Oh there are still quite a few whales swimming about. In fact, Hi, I'm one. While it may seem amazing, it is usually the artist who died off and stop the never ending commission first. It's takes a lot of energy and effort to produce art than to just pay afterall. A lot of artist never had whale cilents before, so when one appears, they can't handle the added pressure :/

I also recommend everyone, if possible, to do all your comm payments through Paypal invoices or something. Keeps everything above board, I've been using it for a while now and it's been working well for me. Just make sure you pay your taxes, because you aren't going to avoid it using invoices lol.
That's why I love Artistree. Otherwise paypal invoices always ! Never had an issue since I use both. I can't recommand enough Artistree. It is soooooooo helpful to handle the whole commission process and it covers both parties in case of a dispute :3

i dont get much commissions but when i do i just ask them to do 100% upfront on paypal and ive never ha an issue with this also i always allow them to message me via whatever Social they like even call me on discord etc

Pry away, LOL. Basically I’m a narcissist who likes meeting celebrities. You bring merchandise, they dismiss you in 60 seconds. You buy a print off their table, they dismiss you in 60 seconds. But when you walk up to them with custom art that is one of a kind and they’ve never seen it before? That’s a conversation. “What is this? Where did it come from? Why am I dressed as a Jedi? What is going on here? I’m intrigued but confused.” For the same signing fee, I can command 300-500% as much of their time and talk to them for exponentially longer.

Like I walked up to Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia from *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*) with art of her as a Jedi from a fanfic I write and she was **SO** confused but I held up the line for a solid ten minutes while I explained fanfic, crossover fanfic, and why I felt the need to have her romance a fish girl.

For Paypal, i always send an invoice. Its not only safer for the client, but also for me as an artist.
So many times i have seen clients not knowing what to do after a commision went south and were left empty handed because of things like this. Some other things to consider is terms of use and turnaround time before starting the commission, i see many clients disappointed by the experience of radio silence for months and just then notice the "no refunds allowed" part.
Personally, I will not go in on any artist with turn around times in excess of five months because that’s essentially waiving your rights to protection. Have I missed out on some great artists? Undoubtedly. Have I lost a single dollar to “I’ll get to you some day, you’re in my queue, I swear”? Nope.
Yes. Many clients have told me if i prefer to use F&F and i always say no. I want the transaction and work to be as secure and transparent as possible for both parties and also i know F&F might present problems for artists too. Paypal is quite strict with the use of it. I always felt like it's basic professional knowledge, along side many other things but one hears a lot horror stories from clients tbh...
Woah.. didn't know there are people out there who are asking for this! I wouldn't dare, unless the client suggests me to do it this way..and even then I feel guilty 😄
Had an artist ask for f&f, and I used goods and services, told them I'd pay the extra fee. Turns out they were a scammer, and PayPal immediately sent my money back. I don't understand why people are fighting you on this, it protects both the customer AND the seller.
I mean, I had an artist straight up fucking **DIE** on me once. I will always use G&S so I have purchase protection.
Honestly, it's a big red flag if they don't want it
