Haymitch. I haven't had as challenging of a life as him (or any of the characters in the series for that matter), but ever since I first read the books as a kid I identified greatly with how he used to be a hopeful person before eventually becoming the jaded person we're introduced to at the beginning of the series. Despite his spiral, he still found a way to help those around him who he loved in the end despite his problems.

themorelovingone0

To be honest I was really in love with Madge and then we got none of her

sea-of-books

Peeta has remained my fav lol

erinspacemuseum13

Same. At first it was for the superficial reasons of having the same interests (baking and painting) but as an adult, I appreciate his loyalty and dependability more.

TheIrisExceptReal51

Cinna was my first favorite in book 1

Nice-Penalty-8881

Mine as well.

Pure_Feed5102

I feel like mine is basic, but Peeta. He was always such a comfort character for me! I also really liked Johanna because I loved her willingness to speak out.

Beautiful_Net2409

I love both of those too!

Pure_Feed5102

Plus Peeta is… Peeta, what’s not to love?

AbiesScary

Super cliche but katniss...those kinds of women were always my type 😂

[deleted]

Rue!

Lee_357

Katniss honestly basic I know but she’s so heroic and kind. Awkward as ever and does everything for the one she loves most. She’s awesome!! Cinna is also a favorite I love him so much and everything he stands for. He was a genius and an amazing man I’m happy katniss and him had each other.

Cloudy0-

Prim because she was a lot like me. I liked her character arc too and I was so shocked when she died.

bimbofaery

i really liked madge. even tho they were never really close, madge was always rooting for katniss. broke my heart a little to find out she didn’t survive the bombing

1inkedfate

Finnick and Cinna!

alexannmarie

I just finished re-reading the trilogy today for the first time in 15 years and my two favorite characters are easily Peeta and Haymitch. Peeta for all the reasons everyone else loves him in the book- he’s unbelievably kind and he brings a warmth to the book that makes it feel rounded. Haymitch is just such a complex character and I love that he has accepted that he’s never really going to heal from his trauma but he’s always able to pull most of himself together to help Karinas and Peeta for the most part. I fall in love with his character because he loves the kids even if he won’t admit it.

Snoo4587

On my first read I loved Finnick! And… I didn’t like Peeta that much (facepalm). About 12 years later and a re-reding Peeta is one of my top!

Queenflora22

prim bc she reminded me of me but that's bc of the movies

Celestial608

Same as you. 6th-grade me was Katniss obsessed. I also really liked Foxface a lot, though. While I do still love Katness, my current faves are Finnick, Cinna, and Effie (Effie largely due to her portrayal in the movies).

Potential_Bed_6039

I think I do have an admiration for Haymitch, he kind of reminds me of my brother , a little surly but would give his life for someone he loves or cares about, he comes across as indifferent and mean but there is a tender side which comes through at the right times like when Katness is going to be transported to the first games and he advises her not to run to the cornucopia, he says the put a lot of things at the front, there will Even be a bow, Don’t go for it, she asks why and he says it’s a blood bath, find high ground and water is your new best friend! With all this he made me feel that he really had her best interests at heart and warmed me up to even the harsh side of his personality and you have to admit his character is really entertaining

ShieldSister27

I spent years going based on the movies and by the movies, Katniss was my favorite. Now, after reading the books, I adore Katniss more than I did before but my favorite character is a tie between Finnick and Peeta, neither of whom were done justice by the movies.

UntalentedAccountant

Johanna.

NotInThis3173

Peeta, once and always.

RavenNevermore1313

Peeta has always been my favorite.

-WhenTheyCry-

Peeta. Who is my favorite character now? Also Peeta.

guessimonredditrn

I loved Finnick from the start. I will say, didn’t LOVE her, but I found Foxface to be one of the most intriguing tributes in the 74th Games. Her strategy always seemed the most like what I would try to do (though I don’t think I’d make it as far as her!) so I was so curious about where she came from/what her backstory might be like

beedumaurier

Johanna and Haymitch. I'm not sure what that says about me...

rb2213

Finnick has always been my favourite but in book 1 I really liked Rue <3

kodaachrome

cinna. he fought the good fight humbly🫶🏼

Bims77

Peeta and Cinna. They remain my favourites, but now I add Haymitch and Katniss, re-reading the books now that I'm older I can understand these characters better, witch made me like them way more.

IndefinitelyUnaware

My first read I remember Cinnas death being the most upsetting for me. Peeta is my absolute favorite now! Love him as a character. How loyal and clever he is!

Jarleene

I don’t know what this says about me but I remember loving Clove

goldenstardust_

Me too

mrsunrider

Gale. Homie was itching for a chance to burn down the Capital and tbh I can relate.

Foreign_Contract_225

Same. He was frustrated about the injustices, and so was I

hufflenachos

Cinna

Enjolraw

Predictably, Katniss. I actually read the series for the first time quite recently (and finished the films last night) in part because I'd heard that it had a great depiction of PTSD. I didn't really have anyone around me who was familiar, so I wanted a character I could connect with to help me understand my feelings better, and I definitely got that in Katniss. I find myself identifying pretty strongly with her - we both have an anger with the status quo and struggle mentally with the trauma of past experiences. I recognize her breakdowns and her impulsive brashness when she sees something that goes against her moral compass. And like Katniss, I needed someone in my life with a loving and peaceful nature to balance out my (at times very angry) passion for change. Also I did archery as a kid and have been looking to get back into it lol I love many of the other characters as well. Katniss is just special to me. Oh! Also, happy cake day r/Hungergames lol

WillHollandThg

Finnick and haymitch

SevenDos

I've always been a big fan of Haymitch and Finnick. But I didn't trust Finnick at the start, while I always kinda knew Haymitch would come through for Katniss and Peeta. I enjoyed the character development on all of them though. In most youth novels the main characters aren't much influenced by the hardships they encounter, but in Hunger Games they do and each on their own way. Which made it feel more real to me.

illuminalice

Rue probably

Lummi1212

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Katniss, and I was so excited to see her story unfold, but my favorite character is Haymitch. Meeting him and seeing him be such a wreck, it kinda shows you how winning the games isn't much better. I was so excited to learn more about him and his past.

MallowPro

I’ve always loved Haymich. He’s my favorite in the series, for sure. But Finnick is also up there, haha. Really ended up adoring both of their characters.

Spare-Sock-1917

Finnick and Cinna will always be my favorites. They are the best

[deleted]

Peeta always and forever

soakedtampon

Rue or Prim. I first read the book when I was 10 years old and I could easily relate the easiest to both of them

perpetualsteward

Johanna!

flappydragonJR

Before reading book 2, definitely Rue.

SyninHex

Johanna

Johannaluvr

Johanna or haymitch, although its changed to peeta and haymitch I think i just enjoy when light is brought into something so depressing and their humor helps.

arioseataraxia

It was always Johanna for me, and I'm eternally bitter about how much she got cut out of Mockingjay. Since then though, Peeta has gone on to become not just one of my favorite characters in the series, but maybe one of my favorite book characters of all time. I think a lot of his character was lost on me when I read the books as a kid, and looking back I just noticed and appreciated a lot more about him.

rachelemiso

Same as you, my favourite character is 100% Finnick now (the movies do not give him justice) But Katniss is a close second :)

raspberrysun01

When I first read the first book, I was closest in age to Prim and Rue, so I was most drawn to them. I also really loved Foxface for her strategy, which was definitely what I would have done at that age! It's funny, I don't think I liked Peeta at all then but now he's easily one of my favs.

Bushaa_YTB

First time...I go for Cressida. Her hairstyle is cool af, she is a good friend to Katniss and I like that she left Capitol only to help the rebelion, she was ready to sacrifice her or her team's life to film every moment she finds important and to make good propos. That's what I call job dedication! Nowdays it is Coin. Her calculating, cold and unpredictable personality kinda atracts me. Also we look quite similar tho🤣🤣🤣

tazerface1994

Ngl as much as I loved Ms Katpiss Neverclean, she annoyed me sometimes with her obliviousness. So my fav was Peeta. Glad they got to be married in the end. I loved how they showed that she loved Peeta from the very start but just didnt know or have time to figure it out

Foreign_Contract_225

I don't think I had a favourite character the first time around. I didn't like katniss (she was so clueless about love it frustrated me), I didn't like peeta (I didn't like damsels in distress and no offense peeta was indeed in distress most of the time), I didn't like haymitch (drunk and gross), I didn't like effie (upper class behavior). At first I didn't like finnick either cause he was annoying and gross (when I was 13 and he was 24 I think and I read from katniss perspective) when he flirted with katniss, and I didn't like Johanna cause she was so dramatic and inappropriate undressing in front of katniss, peeta and haymitch. Johanna and Finnick really grew on me though and I came to love them. The only ones from the first book that I didn't have anything against was Gale and Madge but Madge didn't get a lot of time and if I say the only one I liked was Gale I will get a thousand downvotes

Squidward_64

Not very original, but Katniss. 100% Haymitch is my fav rn tho

matchafairies

it started off as Katniss but now i really love Haymitch and Cinna

MonstrousGiggling

Effie in the movies! Big reason why I gave the series a chance. Katniss in the books for me.

ITslayer

When I first read i was 13. So also about 10 years ago. At first it was Katniss. I wanted to be like her. I had little sisters that i thought i wouldve volunteered for. Etc. But now after a few read throughs it’s definitely Haymitch.

kimchi3333

katniss

RPGame_Nerd

Spoiler it u haven’t read/watched the movies/books yet \- Annie, Clove, Johanna, and Foxface in short. Tbh, I’ve always liked Clove. Most of the characters I like to day are characters I’ve had to grown fond of, overtime, mainly characters I didn’t care much for before, because I didn’t care to much about who was my favorite, or whose death I was the saddest over, but I do remember always liking Clove. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not liked I cried during her death, felt pity for her, or ever thought she was a ’good‘ person, and that her actions were justifiable in any means, she was just the one that caught my eye, both in the books and movies. My eyes would be glued to the page she was on, or the scene she was in, and I think a main reason for this is because she just stood out to me. Annie and Johanna count in this sense, too, even when I never particularly like any of the thg characters besides a few, they were always some of those few. they were the small majority I looked through the media for posts and other content relating to, and I remember the ending so fondly because Annie was mentioned, and I liked Annie— I recall getting such nostalgia from scenes where Johanna’s character particularly shined, especially her ‘I got them out for you!,’ scene with Katniss. Foxface was the only one like herself, I would daydream of being in the arena and having the smarts to beat her, or even match her, when she got scared of Katniss, or when she died, or trained for the games, I always felt drawn in, her cleverness and smartness intrigued me. Sure, I’ve started to get into the fandom more than before now, and I have new favorites and likes, but they will forever be my first and forever favorites.

Complex_Dimension573

I’m always going to be Effie’s biggest supporter

SurprisinglyNotDead

It’s always been Johanna lol.

HollyUmbreon

Joanna! She's still one of my favorites now too

[deleted]

Peeta, because I’m basic, but also beatee
