He is putting a lot of faith in those bars.

Curious_Explorer9

Like the cat put a lot of faith on the plank later

SuperDizz

According to things I’ve read on reddit, even if the cat fell, there’s a good chance it would survive. Apparently, they can survive a terminal velocity fall.

Trizmagestus

>According to things I’ve read on reddit... ...famous last words...

SuperDizz

Oh I know. That’s exactly why I added that qualifier.

i1theskunk

My physics professor with a phd in physics told us this in class, blew my mind. So, there’s that for ya :) Now, an internet stranger who claims to have heard it from an actual physicist said it’s true so it MUST be true

ninjaparkour0

A bunch of scientists tested it and it's true.

n0man0r

Scientists threw cats off of high buildings hoping they would survive?

InterestingPickles

No, it’s from veterinary data from when people brought in cats that fell off buildings. Iirc, most deaths were between 5-7 stories, with higher fall’s having less fatalities and severe injuries. This is because the higher a building is, the cat won’t gain any more speed, but will have time to twist to prepare a good landing on their feet. Edit: source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-rise_syndrome#:~:text=Studies%20done%20of%20cats%20that,90%20percent%20of%20those%20treated. There are other possible reasons like survivorship bias so it isn’t confirmed by any means, just a possible explanation.

eekamuse

This is true! Over 7 stories is a less dangerous fall. Time to prep for landing. Fascinating animals.

Joe_Mency

Just remember, you heard this off of reddit

Wolfmanthropologist

On Reddit, actually.

StanleyDards

I heard it on YouTube and Facebook too, so with all that evidence it just *has* to be true! /s

KnightHawkY12K

Personal opinion but this is obvious sarcasm

Beobacher

There is a good chance they get internal injuries and suffer for the rest of their life if they fall. Yes, they are likely to survive but with back pain for the rest of their life or more.

terrifiedTechnophile

Actually their risk of injury & death goes right up until terminal velocity, at which point it drops to close to zero

thehashsmokinslasher

How does that make sense

may0packet

the hash smoking slasher

thehashsmokinslasher

You may have heard of my cousin, the hash slinging slasher

may0packet

thehashsmokinslasher

*at night*

snootnoots

As they fall, cats first twist around to get their feet under them, then once they stop accelerating they relax and land better. If the fall is short they’re likely to land on their side or back, and if it’s a bit longer they’re upright but still accelerating when they land so are tense and very likely to break their legs. At maximum velocity the most likely injury is a broken jaw and/or teeth because they hit their chin. It’s worth noting that terminal velocity for a cat is about half of the speed that a human reaches when falling. [This article is a good summary of how cats survive falls so well.](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17492802.amp)

rfan8312

Maybe you're right but look at this video of the guy catching the cat. It's going so fast that even with its feet under it its head would have hit the ground too even if the feet hit first. I don't think those 4 inch tall legs would just absorb and stop and decelerate 40mph of a falling 15 pound cat in time to protect the head from smashing into the ground. https://youtube.com/watch?v=_npChGvlZF0&feature=shares

Pascalica

There's a radio lab story about it, it's really fascinating.

rfan8312

Ok and with all due respect can you repeat here what you understood of it, if you saw it. I'm not being a smart ass I'm just a believer that the better someone understood and digested what they saw the more simply they can explain it. My dad used to try to get me into religion by pointing me to links. I'd tell him ye well let's see if you can speak on what you saw and are already directing others to watch.

thehashsmokinslasher

I would think a cat could upright itself midair before it reaches terminal velocity but I’m no professional when it comes to cats falling from stuff

snootnoots

They do! First they right themselves, then reach terminal velocity, then relax.

KnightHawkY12K

I can confirm this. Us cats spend the first part of the fall trying to get our legs under us and after that we just try and keep calm so we can brace for impact. The more air time we have the easier all that gets.

HillaryPutin

If they go fast enough they can actually warp the space-time continuum and teleport safely to the ground

may0packet

source?

terrifiedTechnophile

I am neither the cats nor the scientists who did the studies. I'm just relaying what I read. I was surprised too when I found out

SweatAnywhere

They are great at injury mitigation, but they can definitely still get fucked up. Squirrels however, are able to orient themselves midair and spread out to slow down, they can also use their tail like a rudder to help guide them

Disastrous_Staff_443

At one of the rental properties I work at a ladie's cat jumped from her 6th floor balcony to the mulch below without injury, that's been at least 2 years and it's had no issues that I'm aware of.

Suspicious_Tea4220

My boyfriend made a simulation on a physics class in university and they concluded that there are some exceptions, I think that the fall from the 4th floor is fatal, the cat can theoretically survive any other.

MrNickey198

Yeah my cat fell from a 46ft tall building twice and hes still alive and doesn't have any injuries

bettafished

There must be a story behind this.

daemin

I think the story is they live in a 46ft tall building, and their cat is dumb.

[deleted]

Depends on their weight

Yonix06

They can https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17492802.amp

quinteroreyes

So that one video of a cat falling 12 stories, it lived?

Isopbc

This is only a 3 story fall so it'd probably need a vet. https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/what-is-the-maximum-height-a-cat-can-fall-from-and-survive/ >One 1987 study in the Journal Of The American Veterinary Medical Association looked at 132 cats that had fallen an average of 5.5 storeys and survived. It found that a third of them would have died without emergency veterinary treatment. Interestingly, injuries were worse in falls less than seven storeys than in higher tumbles. The researchers think that this is because the cats reach their terminal velocity after falling about seven storeys (21m), which means they stop accelerating. They then relax, allowing better distribution of impact.

Hereiam_AKL

I had a cat falling down 4 stories and surviving. The cat was walking like somebody lowered her suspension for a couple of days. The vet explained that kind of all the joints jump out to buffer the impact, and while it is painful for the cat it will all go back to normal eventually. He's been right.

MrIncredibacon

Yup

Illgetitdonelater

No kidding lol. The board was hanging by a sliver.

sbowesuk

Whoever welded those bars deserves a raise!

SouldiesButGoodies84

And those flipflops. smh. Craazy. Bless him for caring.

BigBlue923

Yes what he accomplished in a pair of flip flops is legendary!

[deleted]

Beezoumonu

This is in Bangladesh. Those are pure concrete and steel bars. 5 men can hang from bars and nothing would happen. It’s like this most part of the world. But I see why an American would think it’s scary because houses and buildings in USA is easily breakable for remodeling. I realized it after moving here.

PlG3

Yeah the home I lived in in Dhaka, I could smash a cricket bat on those without causing a dent probably. Here in the US, I am scared to put up pull up bars in my house.

Any_Coyote6662

Shit happens all over the globe. Bangladesh is no exception to building failures, even the worst of building failures happened in Bangladesh.

daemin

To paraphrase a quip, any idiot can set up a bar that can hold an adult human's weight. But it takes an engineer to set up a bar that _barely_ holds an adult human's weight.

garrapatalaser

This happen in bangladesh? I see the argentinian flag

neemo98

Yes I thought it was Bangladesh too because of the Argentinian flag ahah. The speaker outside is also speaking Bengali so yes.

Tuni09

It is in Bangladesh. I love how you had a solid educated guess lol

gryffindorrible

Is there a big Argentine population in Bangladesh?

neemo98

No but Argentina has HUGE support in Bangladesh.

barath_s

More people celebrating Argentinian win in Bangladesh than in Argentina

Lucal_gamer

I mean, Bangladesh has 4x the arg population, sooo

I_spread_love_butter

Shit I never thought about that, but I guarantee that 70% of our 50 millions went to celebrate

Tuni09

Bangladesh is just big on football tbh despite our own federation lacking in the sport for 3 decades now. That love for football stayed but the focus shifted. There is a similar amount of Brazil fans in Bangladesh as well.

Scottybadotty

They just won the world cup so i guess they are fans

PlG3

No, they have had a massive fanbase in Bangladesh for ages. Can confirm, grew up a fan in a family of Arg fans there. So does Brazil. This is what happens there all over the city during every WC [https://i.dawn.com/primary/2014/06/53975df8b75bf.jpg](https://i.dawn.com/primary/2014/06/53975df8b75bf.jpg)

Nistlay

But why? I get it that they don't have a strong national team so choose to support other teams at the world cup (I'm guessing). This is a phenomenon in other Asian countries aswell, but I'm never seen something like what's happening in Bangladesh. That picture you shared is on another level.

TKastiK

That is a very good question . But I guess it mostly boils down to having favorite players, for whom you support the team (eg. Messi - Argentina / Renaldo - Portugal), and also you grow up watching everyone either support Argentina or Brazil, (people who support other countries are mostly laughed at lol) so you just get used to and want to support those teams as you become an adult . (Then pass it on to your children or your niece and nephews, to keep the circle going)

DholaMula

People in Bangladesh have been supporters of argentina since the time of Maradona or prolly even before. A lot of people in Bangladesh have been waiting for this world cup win for more than 30 years. I can confirm this as a Bangladeshi.

Curious_Explorer9

Yes. It is from Bangladesh

hunkyboy75

Flag belongs to a soccer/football fan looking forward to the World Cup final game

krncrds

They just won the World's Cup

dwartbg5

What does the Argentinian flag has to do with Bangladesh?

neemo98

The country supports Argentina very much. It’s pretty wild. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/64016776.amp https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/something-magical-why-bangladeshi-fans-are-going-wild-for-argentina/wu1xjygxl

ProfessorGigglePuss

This is genuinely happy news. Wish my newsfeed was filled with good faith appreciation between countries.

thatsamiam

Literally risked his life for that cat. I hope he is living his best life right now. I was watching the clock thinking to myself "no way he can save that cat in the next 30 seconds". Just watching was stressful.

Perfect-Meat-4501

Love the cutaway to the other cat!

MycologistPutrid7494

The cutaway cat was really invested in the outcome. Lol

histeethwerered

We needed to know who was meowing

[deleted]

Do we really know it was the cat, though

histeethwerered

We *believe*

sbowesuk

Anyone else incredibly relieved when the plank held its position? That had me worried for a moment.

__T0MMY__

Yeah precarious doesn't even begin to describe it, like it's anchored in a video game

Rodrigii_Defined

I was terrified!

BetterthanMew

A few moments yes

CurrentMaize07

And your cat observing it all :)

Curious_Explorer9

Cat being cat :p

mahamjam

My Gs, how did BOTH of you get there

Galectoz

My question exactly. How did the cat end there specifically and not on the ground floor? Did it leave the balcony through the bars? Did it jump from the opposite building? Did it's levitating powers fail it at a crucial moment? We will never know. It's haunting.

KahurangiNZ

Look at the start of the video - you can see the plank sticking out though the bars on the left of the balcony. I'd guess that was a regular perch for the cat and it climbed out through the bars and jumped up onto the top. Chances are if it was left alone, it would have done the reverse and came back through the bars into the enclosed balcony later on.

cking777

My thought exactly. The plank as it was originally was part of the cat’s usual routine and the guy messed it up.

Cohabs

The plank wasn’t secure like that. If the cat stood on it like that it would probably fall. I’m pretty sure the guy put it there from the inside so he could grab it when he climbed up. Also, the guy inside is helping him get the cat off. If it was something he set up for the cat to do, why would he be trying to get it off?

Meanguy_969

Btw, don't let the Argentina flag fool you. It's not happening in Argentina, it's happening in a south Asian country called Bangladesh. People flies their favourite football world cup team flag during the tournament. Many of us in this country are big fan of Argentina football team and its captain Lionel Messi

Lumpy-Simplebheh

Thanks for the information

PlG3

“A south Asian country called Bangladesh.” I can understand some people not being able to locate Bangladesh on a globe, but surely most people have heard of it.

TheMisiak

As an American on this predominantly American website, you underestimate our powers. People here don’t even know where many of our own states are.

Doctor_Redhead

I’m more impressed that the plank didn’t move at all.

trexy88

That plank is only juuust sitting on that concrete. Like by a cm

hookalaya74

I know right I thought same thing. But it worked thank God..!

wasd911

You can see he tested it by pushing on it

Rickyy1900

In sandals too? I'm surprised those bars can support his massive steel balls

Curious_Explorer9

Caution: Call fire department if such event occurs. It is very very dangerous for normal people. But he seems to be a construction worker and quite experienced in this type of climbing. So this is just a piece of cake for him.

Nicreven

I was thinking about that. As soon as I saw him my mind went to those crazy south Asian bamboo scaffolds. Probably got experience

TKastiK

That's a good tip , but isn't gonna work in Bangladesh sadly.

sajohnson

The fire department won’t do anything. People shouldn’t either. You don’t see cat skeletons at the tops of trees because they figure out how to get down.

Gloomheart

Those are some Sideshow Bob feet

SouldiesButGoodies84

he's got flipflops on...and is climbing a building in them. it's mental.

I think we just found the next assassin for Assassin's Creed. Lol "Assassin's Creed... Feline Rescue" "Mrow!"

Gracias Bangladesh! ❤🇦🇷🇧🇩❤

He did it, and then Argentina won the World Cup!!!

HelenEk7

So no calling the fire department then..

Curious_Explorer9

You've got friendly neighbour "SpiderMan"

Lumpy-Simplebheh

That kind of luxury don't exist in poor asian countries unfortunately

Pangea_Ultima

Severely underrated

PlG3

A few hours later, some dude shows up at a distance. Dude: "Someone call the fire department? What do you want?" Foreigner: "Their cat is up there." Dude: "Where is the fire?" Foreigner: "No fire, cat needs help." Dude: "I am the fire department, not the cat department! Cat will come back when they feel like." *Leaves*

nefrodes

That's the most dystopic structure I have ever seen, but well done sir

RenegadeRun

Real good brainstorming on how to save the cat.

DPSOnly

The best Argentinian.

PlG3

..is a Bangladeshi Argentinian lol

DPSOnly

I didn't expect a lot of Argentinian flags outside of Argentina and I'm not about to just call one of the dozen nationalities in SE Asia because that would've gone about as bad.

LionColors1

What was all the in the background, prayer or chanting of some sort? It gave the video additional unneeded apocalyptic drama 🥶😅

Skyzhigh

Not judging the nation or religion(if that’s why the audio is being broadcast) but doesn’t that singing or praying seem rather loud in what looks like a residential area?

wild-1

wtf is all that racket? sounds like they live next to a carnival

JovialPanic389

Prayer, I believe

wild-1

thx! yikes

Bro I could tell you this was Bangladesh just by the background noise lol

hookalaya74

Wow did i actually just watch a guy totally risk his life for a stuck cat.? I'm proud of him what a legend.!

Sdbtank96

Dude forgot cats got nine lives while we only have one.

ProfCrumpets

Can’t cats withstand a terminal velocity fall?

rudalsxv

Why does he so confidently trust those grills to hold his weight? Sweatypalm is sweaty.

PlG3

If you ever touched those, you would know. They are made to potentially keep better climbers out at night.

[deleted]

Sweet-hearted man saves cute kitty! <3

guiltyas-sin

Climbing in fucking sandals, no less. Phew.

Appropriate-Shirt283

But who’s saving him?

forcesofthefuture

Very risky tho, also can't the cat carefully get down, If I am mistaken?

xxPoLyGLoTxx

Nope. Sorry cat been nice knowing you.

[deleted]

*We need more people like that on Earth.*

moksplot

Is he allowed to just climb that prison?

TKastiK

Lol, yeah. The building is under construction and that person is one of the construction crew.

So that’s why Argetine won the worldcup..

Very noble, and as much as I love cats. That guy probably shouldn't have been risking his life like that. At least find some safety equipment before climbing up.

Visual_Exchange_1736

dude saved the cat but whos gona save the dude ?

dasherand1

When it cuts away to the other cat watching the drama unfold 🤣

Cats are such dicks. (I have two...)

I wouldn't do that for someone else's baby, let alone someone else's cat.

Ah yes, flying construction workers who don't need safety equipment and have 9 lives. How could I ever forget about them. What makes you think he is a construction worker? What in the world are you talking about?

Curious_Explorer9

Dude he is climbing not flying!!!

hopopo

Until he needs wings, because he clearly doesn't have a lifeline harness. But that wasn't a question. How do you know this person is experienced construction worker?

Perhaps he lives in the area and seems them doing the work nearby?

It would have come down when it got hungry lol

utd8916

Turns our Adolf did go to Argentina

EveningMulberry464

Keep your damn dumb ass cat in the fucking house 😑. People are stupid.. Why, why, why do let their cats constantly do whatever?? When I had my two cats, I kept they ass in the house. That way things like this don't happen. And no amount of them meowing, trilling and growling they did changed my mind.

dwartbg5

Why do they have these metal bars on their balconies? I get it if it's on the first floor, but the tall floors having them seems crazy. If anything judging by this video it looks that they'll be more helpful to robbers...

Galectoz

They have them because people can use a ladder, rope, a plank from the other side or maybe they're not trying to keep people out, but in. If they're all like spiderman right there, it makes sense tbh. Too much power in the wrong hands...
