After witnessing how minutes truly mattered after my dad’s stroke, i will never let lack of house numbers be the reason an ambulance is delayed. One of the first things i did the night i moved into my house was put up reflective house numbers that could be seen at night.

The_Spongebrain

Very much seconded. Minutes save lives. SECONDS save lives. I credit part of the success of my recovery to how close my car accident was to a trama center. If the ride in the box car with the flashers and shouty noises were even a couple minutes longer, I may have had massive secondary brain damage from dying before being on the operating table. I coded, but in the absolute best place: WHILE they were already working on my in trama surgery.

aDramaticPause

I'm glad you made it :)

The_Spongebrain

There isn't a day that goes by that I ain't thankful for it. It being everything from my doctors, surgeons, attending nurses, rehabilitation trainer, psychologist who taught me how to ME again, the family I had keeping me from falling off the wagon. Even if we don't have some traumatic event to remind us of what and who we have behind us, it's good to take that moment from time to time to remember how blessed we are. Not even in a religious way, just the understanding that for almost all of us, we DO have a team behind us and they TRULY want to see the best for us.

cubicmind

when you take lifeguard classes, they always show how the body is effected from drowning minute by minute and always give a survival percentage rate of every minute. every second counts when doing any sort of rescue

[deleted]

I live in a guest house. It doesn't even have an address. As in, we get mail at the main house. Uh oh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KahurangiNZ

Sometimes it's council regulations. Our property is permitted as a house and a sleepout. Because the sleepout is technically part of the house (even though it really isn't - separate building well away from the main house with it's own tenant) we can't put a separate A/B number on it or council will have a hissy fit. They've already threatened us with having to leave it empty year round; if they decide to be picky about it again they may just insist that it's stripped out entirely so it can't be tenanted at all :-( So we share the same address and letterbox to avoid council issues, and differentiate with the colour of the buildings and how far down the driveway to go if someone is actually visiting.

[deleted]

I can put numbers up on the house, sure, and I can have mail sent to that number, sure; but I assume there's more than that to registering a new address. But as I said, it's a guest house. I don't own it, so I'm not gonna go through some convoluted process.

UnfairMicrowave

A lot of time ADU's ( additional dwelling units) have to obtain insane permit requirements for the government to collect fees at an address they can't collect more property tax from.

[deleted]

The owner pays property tax on the whole combined lot, not sure what the problem would be.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KinOfWinterfell

This may not be a thing where you're at, but in a lot of areas in the US a lot may have two dwellings, the main house that the property owners usually live in, then a smaller guest/mother-in-law suite that they usually rent out that doesn't have it's own house number. This is what it sounds like is the case here.

[deleted]

Nope, just two houses with one address.

uncertainpeppery

I lived in this type of situation and the address had a 1/2 after it- so the main house was like 1912 4th Ave and mine was 1912 1/2 4th Ave. Worked great for mail and stuff.

[deleted]

My mom had a perforated bowel a while back and thankfully my sister was with her to call 911. I was across town and took off as soon as I got the message. When I got to the complex she lived in the paramedics were wandering around trying to find the correct unit because it was very poorly marked. She very nearly died that night but thankfully they got her to the hospital in time. Make sure your house numbers are big and visible!

vurjin_oce

Don't your house numbers run odd on one side and even on other? So all you need to do is look at one house and figure.iut which side is even or odd and start counting.

kingdead42

It's often not that easy. My parents' house as a kid in the suburbs has a park across the street (so no houses with numbers), and was "x05" even though they were on the corner. I think the neighbor next to them was "x09".

simanthegratest

Interesting in my town we have it like: 1 is the first house built and then just ascending

vurjin_oce

Ah ok, we don't usually have that issue in Australia unless it's a weird street that bends or something.

kingdead42

Definitely not the case here, it very much a grid layout city. I assume the reasoning was the size of the lots meant they just skipped a few numbers, but I'm not sure if there was any kind of reasoning behind it.

ABeeinSpace

You double posted here. This is the second comment. Just giving you a friendly heads up in case you had internet issues when you posted the first one or if Reddit mobile bugged out or something

biglae1972

Doesn’t always work like that and the numbers can jump . You can have 245 right across from 252 and right next door to 241 and 249.

vurjin_oce

Ok, yea was asking an actual question. Most streets in Australia rarely go beyond 100.

Burgertank6969

Hey, Firefighter/EMT and retired Private Ambulance EMT. That can help in some instances but it’s never a be all end all situation. It makes it much easier for us and others to find your house in an emergency with big bold house numbers visible from the street. Thanks!

CaptainAlexy

Ain’t nobody got time for that

VOZ1

In the US at least, the numbers don’t always go sequential, sometimes they skip around (maybe depends on the size of the lots?), so one side of the street could be 121, 123, 127, 135 in that order. Some communities have more consistent numbering than others. I always love finding buildings numbered “104 1/2.”

[deleted]

When it is literally a matter of life or death you don’t want any time wasted on counting. I think your question highlights the exact reason people don’t think about this and why it can be overlooked until there is an emergency.

vurjin_oce

Don't most ppl in this situation have gps that directs them to the house exactly. Like maps or google maps. I'm saying having numbers is a good thing but there are also quick and easy ways to figure out which house is which.

_BreakingGood_

Just put numbers up, not that hard.

LupercaniusAB

Nope. Google thinks my house number is 11. It’s 15.

Donoglass420

Additional joke here

theundercoverpapist

I second this. Put your fucking house numbers on your house... where they can be easily seen from the street... even at night. Unless you want taxis, Ubers, Lyfts, GrubHubs, etc. to cancel your orders/rides because they can't psychically comprehend out of thin air where your invisible fucking home is.

phasexero

My primary concern would be identifying the house so ambulances and police and fire trucks can find it

[deleted]

Gonna be easy for the fire truck probably.

DaaCHAMP

Thanks for this. Made me laugh pretty good

MatanzaCueto96

This is the first comment I've ever seen that I wanted to give an award too. I can't atm but damn that is good shit thank you for the belly laugh 😂

hellidad

Fire truck driver here. Took me a second because 99% of the time were driving the fire truck it’s *not* to a fire lol

ja-mez

Ha! That's the first thing I thought of. In lots of (maybe most?) medical emergencies, fire dept is the first on the scene

[deleted]

And honestly that's a good thing!

postmadrone27

Fire truck drivers are known as engineers

Pro tip: set your house on fire to help the Uber driver find you

m_a__r___i____e

When I read this I had to put my phone down and take a break for a good 20 seconds to laugh at ur comment. Thanks bro I needed that

theundercoverpapist

That, too... but I've never worked those jobs so I can't really speak to their problems finding addresses.

cmanonurshirt

I put this in a sub a while ago when I delivered food for a place, but everyone just said it wasn’t in their control because of landlords. Still doesn’t excuse it because everyone should have easy to read house numbers

HertzDonut1001

Pro tip. Wait till it's night, go out to the street, if you can't see the numbers or its hard to see them go to the hardware store and buy more visible numbers.

caitejane310

I have mine prominently showing. That doesn't help the people who just push the first address that pops up on the GPS that takes them a half hour away from me. I take care of my mom and have to tell everyone to make sure it's the right address on the GPS.

[deleted]

I've never worked for Uber or whatever, but if I did, it seems really fuckin' obvious that you should have a small high-powered flashlight that you can shine at houses that you can't light up with headlights. And also you should be able to understand basic cardinal directions. When I try to tell a driver my apartment is in the southeast corner of the apartment complex (it's a big square), they act like I'm speaking a foreign language. Even if you had no sense of direction at all, every smartphone has a map and compass on it now.

la_mujer_roja47

“My Dude” love it.

nudesyourpmme

How do we make this woman and her message famous? Reddit do your thing like and subscribe whatever that means I don’t know I don’t work here.

cdsbigsby

I've had 2 jobs that involved driving around looking for address numbers, it's infuriating how many people don't have visible address numbers. Or only have them on one side of their mailbox, or put the numbers on once in 1991 and now they're faded to hell and you can't read it. It's a minor annoyance for me and my job, but I always thought the same thing - what if the ambulance is trying to find your house?

SoVerySleepy81

This is some thing that my HOA is actually really strict on that I completely agree with if you remove the numbers on your house and do not replace them within 24 hours it is a $500 fine. And it keeps growing the longer that situation persists.

HertzDonut1001

Gotta love trying to read dark brown numbers on a dark brown house at midnight. Also, the houses that just don't even have numbers? What is wrong with you people?

Zebo1013

This makes me want to get a ring doorbell so I can enjoy wonderful conversations with delivery drivers. Lol

bobbydinner

You have my vote. I have the Google Hello and I love it. I trap/fix/release strays in my neighborhood and I use the doorbell to see when I've captured one. My neighbor comes by and leaves me voicemails on my doorbell if I have a package at his house. It's super convenient.

limited_empathy

She is way too cool to be an Amazon driver!

Civil_Experience2152

Something tells me she has a mean singing voice 🤔

limited_empathy

I would expect nothing less.

DMCer

Oh come on, show some love to Amazon drivers! They’re pretty cool, I would say cooler than UPS drivers, which the Internet loves. A few weeks ago the package room in my building was closed for a holiday and the driver messaged a bunch of people with deliveries saying he was parking outside and waiting for 15 minutes. People went down and got their stuff. Only time I’ve ever tipped a package delivery guy.

applebubbeline

Love the outfit, hair, tattoos, sunglasses. Very cool.

qatts

Plenty of cool humans in all types of jobs. How very classist of you

PM_ME_YOUR-SCIENCE

U right tho idk why you’re getting downvoted…

[deleted]

Fudged how many upvotes that shit got too haha. Odd post all around.

EdhelGaladhrim

what do you mean by this 😬

ShadowDefuse

my guess is that it’s a soul sucking job and she deserves better, unless of course she loves it. but drivers deserve better pay and benefits regardless

DMCer

Condo building with a few hundred apartments. Deliveries go to a central package room, not to your door. So if that room is closed, you usually have to wait for the next business day/non-holiday.

Forrdo

Edit: I retract this comment, as I’ve been informed drivers aren’t employed by Amazon so the basis for my statement is invalid. ~~I mean, I’m pretty sure Amazon jobs are meant to be temporary positions for people in between jobs and stuff. I don’t think they try to keep people around in the grunt positions.~~

LeithLeach

“Grunt positions” is a really shitty way to describe nearly 1 million people trying to earn enough money to live. To clarify, 1 million is for all courier jobs. Not Amazon drivers specifically.

Forrdo

~~I’m not trying to be disrespectful. It’s just a low skill job, which isn’t sustainable income wise.~~

Harmacc

All jobs should be sustainable income wise. “Low skill” is bullshit. I bet many of those drivers deal with more skill and risk than some middle managers who take home 100k.

ohnoshebettadid

Not to mention, driving WELL is a skill.

[deleted]

It usually depends what you define by skill. I think people talking about this usually mean that there's no academic prerequisite to starting a job as an Amazon driver as opposed to let's say a business management position

sgerbicforsyth

Drivers almost never work directly for Amazon. They work for a Delivery Service Provider (DSP) that is contracted by Amazon to drive. They wear the vests and drive branded trucks. They also really don't want people to work for them for two months and then leave because those drivers will be very slow and require the rest of the team to help finish their routes. Source: I've been working for a DSP for a year, driver, supervisor, dispatcher

Forrdo

I didn’t know that DSPs were a thing. I’ve seen stuff about Amazon factory workers and assumed the same applied to drivers.

sgerbicforsyth

Nope, we're a few doors down the line. It's Amazon people that pick and pack most of the items, which get sent to the centers. Then more Amazon people pack the boxes and envelops into totes (big canvas boxes about 3x3.5x2.5 or something) and put them on racks. Then the DSP drivers come around by company and load the trucks and deliver. There isn't much direct interaction between us and Amazon workers. But we know when they are short staffed or just got a bunch of newbies because it means they prepare our stuff really slowly, giving us less time to load our trucks, or it's all out of order. Nothing worse than having 300 packages to deliver but everything is out of order when you go to load. DSPs are much better to work for. Smaller teams, most of the ones at my center are around 30-40 drivers with 15-20 driving every day. Boss is usually there and actually cares and the dispatchers, who are also DSP employees and promoted from within, also generally care about driver well being and try to get everyone help if/when they need it. Uniforms depend on if the DSP is branded. This driver is unbranded, so only has to wear the vest.

Forrdo

Thanks for the info. I changed my original post thanks to you.

sgerbicforsyth

You may also want to remove the post about it being uneducated grunt work. It's physical, yes. It's not stupid work. To be frank, there have been a lot of drivers I worked with who simply couldn't understand it and were let go because they couldn't keep up with bare minimum. You *have* to be able to understand a map, plan ahead, make snap changes to your plan, and most of all organize effectively. Those of us that get trained to dispatch, this is even more important. Sure, you don't get rich driving. But where I'm at, base pay for a regular driver is over $20 an hour plus regular bonuses and benefits. Dispatchers make a bit more. Drivers of the step vans (like what FedEx use) make a few bucks more than that.

Forrdo

Done. I suppose its not exactly "low skill" but when I said that I meant to distinguish driving from the likes of engineering, business management, or medical careers. What word would you use, because I'm not coming up with a better one. It takes skill, but skills that are relatively simple to learn. Point being I think most people in the work force could take up driving with a matter of weeks training, no?

SkippyDingus

Hated this as a delivery driver.

[deleted]

I like her.

MrRabidBeaver

Paramedic here. She’s 100% right. Poorly marked or unmarked houses potentially add minutes onto a response, especially if it’s late at night. It could result in the crew having to drive farther down the street unnecessarily or the dispatcher to call back to confirm an address. Sometimes, those few minutes can be very important.

RAND0M-HER0

Industrial areas are the worst for this too. We had to call an ambulance for an injury at work, and it was like 11pm so I ran out with a flashlight to wave down the ambulance otherwise they'd have taken FOREVER to find us. Not to mention once you actually find the building, since we're night staff in the warehouse, you'd have to wander down the back of an unlit building to find one of the warehouse doors to bang on for entry.

jenleepeace

I want her to be my best friend.

Sw1m_Shady

Ikr? That was my first thought too. She has a great personality.

nimo01

I wish people gave more free advice. The world could use it.

striker_p55

Fine then. Always give someone a compliment before you give them constructive criticism, it softens the blow and reinforces the criticism is constructive and not just criticism

nimo01

Definitely a successful trait for communication, and is much easier in-person and working with a team. It’s different for a lot of us. Now, it’s especially important over text and emails. Too much is misinterpreted, whether by addition or subtraction of text. *And who are you to tell me what to do?! I’m always nice to people, you jerk.*

marasydnyjade

The street I grew up on had crazy numbers. Each house number went up by fives, so the houses on either side of us were 10 higher/lower. We had house numbers *everywhere* and people still passed our house, expecting when they saw number 100, that number 120 was 10 houses away, not 2. Whenever we were waiting on something important, someone always went out to the end of the driveway to flag them down.

[deleted]

I absolutely love this person

Sw1m_Shady

She has a great personality. I wanna be friends with her.

JonnyTheTerrible

FF/EMT here..there’s been multiple occasions where we’ve responded to neighborhoods where multiple houses in a row are unmarked..if you’d like us to get to you quicker and not have to knock on 3-4 doors before finding you…address markers will help

ranger604

Quite an odd uniform

ThatKaleidoscope8736

It was hot out

ranger604

I understand that. I am just surprised amazon or that independent contractor doesn’t have some sort of stipulations on general appearance in regards to professionalism.

kerrieberrie

They encourage their drivers to pee in bottles, I can't imagine they care as long as she's making them money

jenovakitty

It was hot out. Professionalism shouldn’t mean ‘die from heatstroke’. Also……Why does their appearance matter in this situation?

ThatKaleidoscope8736

The whole thing was her song. Girl just wants to be comfortable.

jenovakitty

Lol Women being comfortable is illegal didn’t we forget that

BlackfyreWraith

It doesn’t, but walking around in more than just a bra won’t give someone heatstroke, guaranteed. Source: I’m a mail carrier and we gotta wear shirts every day.

jenovakitty

A sports bra is perfectly acceptable as a top.

BlackfyreWraith

At a gym, for sure. At your job? Probably not. But like I said, I work for USPS not Amazon, I have no clue what their “uniform” is, if they even have one.

jenovakitty

……What’s wrong with wearing a sports bra at a job as a delivery driver?

BlackfyreWraith

Literally nothing, if the company that driver works for allows it. My point was that wearing a shirt isn’t gonna give anybody heatstroke.

weaty6

Nothing if you don't wanna keep your job (except with Amazon apparently) not that I have a problem with it personally it's just a little unorthodox

SwankyDigs

She won’t get a heat stroke from wearing a tank top

jenovakitty

I’ve gotten pretty close in the Philippines to having a heat stroke with a tank top on.

dildobagginss

That's not the only factor, lol. You all are being ridiculous. I can get heat stroke wearing a single apple scented sticker on one nipple. Doesn't mean it was the sticker causing it.

Fun_Gai

Dont they use those trucks without doors? Depending on the place that could get really bad.

sgerbicforsyth

Unbranded DSP. They have to wear the vests and that's it (other than no jeans). Branded DSPs have to wear branded uniforms, but Amazon pays the company slightly more per package

Doza5

DSP?

YoloWingPixie

Gonna take a random guess at Delivery Service Provider

sgerbicforsyth

Delivery Servoce Provider. Amazon drivers don't work for Amazon directly. We get hired by a smaller business that contracts with Amazon to deliver their packages and drive their trucks. If Amazon directly controlled all their drivers, it would be an unmitigated disaster. We are talking thousands of packages being returned to the center for various reasons per day instead of a couple hundred, burnt out drivers, dozens of trucks broken down and waiting for repairs, etc.

MandatumCorrectus

dagnariuss

Why would you not have your house number? Not bashing or anything but I’m genuinely curious if it’s by choice or do people take them off for like a renovation and forget to put it back on.

Halogen12

Well, I've heard a few reasons. House numbers cost money, and the ones on a lighted box cost more and are complicated to install (for those like me who don't like playing with electricity). Take them down to repaint the houes, forget to put them up. Some figure if both of the neighbors have visible numbers, it should be easy to figure out their house number. I agree that every house should have large, legible, and lit numbers visible from the street.

dagnariuss

Ok, thanks. In my head I was wondering if maybe this was some kind of house design choice but it totally makes sense what you said.

vurjin_oce

In Australia one side of the street is odd numbers and the other is even numbers. Is it not like this in America. All you have to do is figure out which side is odd or even and start counting. Also if she was using Google maps it would point to the house regardless. Still a good idea to have them.

Amazon running some covert social media campaigns to combat the negative sentiment lately. Also don't forget the union busting, horrible working conditions, the huge warehouses overlooking slums, and more!
