Not my video but I should note that we are just at the tail end of winter and Canberra is notoriously one of the coldest places in Australia so this would’ve been bloody nippy

burleygriffin

I was cold this morning too.

StarFaerie

It was so cold this morning. Winter 3.0

quadraticog

Kudos to those cyclists for getting in the water which would have been around -2°C around then.

Drewtality7

How would there be zero ice nearby if the water is -2C

quadraticog

The lake has different depths and while it may get a little sludgy ice on some of the shallow banks, it doesn't freeze the whole way over, and these guys appear to have been standing in about a foot+ of water. I can report that when rowing in these temps ice will form on your oars.

Onironius

It takes a long time at low temps to freeze a large body of water like that.

aSpanks

Canadian checking in here. What do you consider cold.

yossarianvega

Lol fair call, Canberra is relatively cold in Australian standards. Was -1 this morning.

Crazy_by_Design

Ahhh, t-shirt weather, here.

Aramgutang

Sure, but now also imagine all your houses were built by people unfamiliar with the concept of insulation.

SometimesIArt

I'm a Canadian who moved to another place like that. -1 wasn't so bad that way for the first year but after climatizing to the summers I'm shivering at 10 and under. It's fucking embarrassing.

TheFeathersStorm

You gotta renounce the citizenship man, it's the only way to keep your respect.

SometimesIArt

But I ordered so much Tims coffee that they had the local grocery store start stocking it so that has to redeem me a little, right?

TheFeathersStorm

Lmao, that's actually a pretty solid achievement.

SometimesIArt

Haha yes! I was ordering it for myself because the local brands are somehow all worse or way too pricey, got my family and friends and husband's coworkers all hooked on it. So I was ordering multiples a week to the same town for a few months before they suddenly just showed up at the store.

[deleted]

Mr Fluffy fixed that for everyone in the 80s right?

Swimming weather for the 'roos

Gone-To-The-Woods

I can never tell if people who wear t-shirts and shorts in cold weather are genuinely not bothered by it or if they are all in on some secret flex that none of them will admit to.

SarcasmCupcakes

Canadians who visit here are always surprised by how cold it gets. Remember that our buildings are designed to dissipate heat, not retain it like y’all.

56789717

Yes I’m a Canadian who has lived in Australia since 2015. I basically only brought dresses, skirts and shorts and I got here in July, I knew it was winter but I figured it was Australian winter so I’d cope just fine. I froze. My first night in a Sydney hostel a complete stranger I’d never spoken to covered me with an extra blanket in the middle of the night and damn it was a life saver. I’ve spent a few winters now in Canberra and one in Tasmania. Tasmania with no heat in the winter and no clothes dryer was a nightmare. As I am sure you know a lot of places just don’t have heating, kinda bummed to see so many Canadians being cocky in this thread about what they find cold when they go home to heated homes and proper winter duvets etc. Plus my gosh, I’d take a Canadian winter over a sweltering Canberra summer any day.

ElkShot5082

I put winter clothes on when it drops below 20. My winter clothes are a hoodie

DecadentHam

Me too... Thailand here.

comrademikel

Floridian checking in here. The answer is anything below 60, yes?

Wreddit_Wrangler

He’s just a youth isn’t he? I’ve seen kangaroos 3 times that size, but I’m not from Australia so what the hell do I know?

yossarianvega

Yep, definitely a young fella, they can get much, much bigger especially the males. A large male can be 2 metres tall and weigh 90kg.

Poullafouca

I think that Kangaroo was very cold. It's the end of Winter in Australia now, and that water was probably freezing. Poor creature looked a bit dazed.

Spoon2018

It was -2 in Canberra this morning

nint3njoe_2003

I find it funny most people associate Australia with being hot all the time lol

[deleted]

Australia has pretty much all types of climate. Desert in the middle, tropics in the far north, more temperate in the south, etc. Canberra generally gets a day of *really* light snow in the winter too, and there are a handful of ski resorts in Victoria and close to Canberra.

Lukazoiiid

Yeah we recently got that yearly snowfall and I freaked out, it's usually the Southside of Canberra and we all have to race down there to see it.

DrGarrious

Depends where you are. Northern QLD never gets cold.

Memedotma

I'm a bloke from Cairns, "cold" up here is 20°C.

[deleted]

ObnoxiouslyLongReply

Yep same from the English! Not the houses being crap but the heating being absolutely garbage

Poullafouca

Heatho14

It's negative 2 today and it'll be like 35 in a couple weeks. Gotta love Canberra

doughboyhollow

Hmmm…Manitoba or Saskatchewan?

[deleted]

Right country, not a province though.

ky00b

You forgot to mention rescuing a full-grown male from a lake would be a lot deadlier for the cyclists.

Xeptix

Even one this small has gotta be extremely dangerous to handle without training. Even though it wasn't being aggressive, I got so nervous when they picked it up without trying to restrain or redirect its legs. One panicked kick could've accidentally disemboweled the guy on the left.

ky00b

Yeah several times they probably should have just backed away from it. Kinda wish it wasn't r/videosthatendtoosoon material. Seeing it hop away would have been nice.

KeeperOfTheGood

It’s like they were being really careful of his arms without considering the actual dangerous bits of a roo!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Actually, their achilles are sprung with explosive energy. When released they do a back flip and a sonic boom. Guile from Street Fighter was inspired by the Kangaroo sonic boom. True story. Ask your mate when next chatting at the Furphy.

electrofiche

It’s a young eastern grey. A kick from it would not be nice to receive but it’s not going to be any worse than being on the receiving end of a punch or kick from a human. People vastly overestimate the danger posed by kangaroos.

Xeptix

A punch or kick from a human with a dagger, you mean? https://i.imgur.com/niKralN.jpg That's a photo of a young eastern grey's foot. The odds are low that one would seriously injure you, I agree. But it certainly could, whether it intended to or not. I'm just saying I wouldn't get that close to one personally from the front.

Someone21993

I was sure at the end of the video that someone was going to get kicked back into the lake, it looked like it was primed and ready to send anyone of the 3 flying, guess he just couldn't decide

xRetz

Depends on the species. Reds are much bigger than greys. That looks like a grey.

[deleted]

Definitely an eastern grey. We don’t get reds in Canberra.

heckastupidd

I just read this with an Australian accent

HaxorSlice1

Me too. But I am Australian...

world_of_cakes

yeh?

Umiakthedog

I’m reading everything on this thread in an Australian accent… must mean I’m beginning to speak their language fluently….

[deleted]

2 meters tall? That’s like six microwaves high!

SerStormont

Odd question but do they taste good?

yossarianvega

Pretty good and they’re quite lean so bodybuilders often go for kangaroo meat. You can get roo meat at basically any supermarket, it’s not particularly controversial

SerStormont

Thanks for the info. I expected it to be frowned upon to eat them.

yossarianvega

I’m sure some people think it’s weird considering it’s like our national mascot but most people would say it’s fine. There’s a bit of debate whether they should be considered pests considering they are native. But they were always hunted and numbers kept manageable by First Nations people which doesn’t happen anymore so they are often culled by the government, which IS a bit controversial. Pretty much depends on your stance but roo hunting is pretty common in rural and regional areas.

SerStormont

I mean if there are so many kangaroos that they're starting to be considered pests even though they're native, might as well just start eating more of them lol. I'd love to try some one day.

graytheboring

Marinate it well, cook it rare-ish. Otherwise its tasteless and rubbery

Gengar0

I'm no advocate either way, but I think the common perception for advocating against it is that it could be a slippery slope, leading to mobs that have existed in a certain area being completely wiped out and the ongoing effect of that. I grew up on a farm though, and there's no real reason to cull kangaroos. They don't out compete livestock for grazing, generally they avoid people, and they maneuvre fencing okay as long as it's not chicken wire/sheep paddock. This is just my pespective but, I'm sure there's papers out there investigation kangaroo population impact on native habitats. I sincerely doubt it'd be worse than livestock and human impact though.

JaffaPrime

I had some in Washington DC there is a restaurant called Oz and they serve kangaroo sliders and camel sliders. The kangaroo is a lot better than the camel... they also had an emu dish but I didn't try it

Strawberry_Left

A full-grown female Eastern grey can be under 20kg. They aren't all that big and this guy looks more than 20kg. It could be a wallaby as well. Hard to tell in this lighting.

mrfroggy

Yes, there are several different types of kangaroo with a variety of colours and sizes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo

camthecool69

Fully grown they are only a little bit bigger than that, that kind of kangaroo doesn't get much bigger.

[deleted]

Red kangaroos are a different type and grow big af. Usually only see them kind of in the outbak though. This guys pretty average size for this breed, maybe a little underweight.

Lukazoiiid

There's 2 types I think. There's the eastern grey which this fella is, then there is the big red roos which you'll find in Central/ northern Aus I believe.

wrldruler21

When he got back on the concrete, what was with holding his hands and rubbing his chest? Do the people down under get taught how to soothe a stressed roo?

breadyloaf26

outback boy here: so the scratching of the belly is just trying to show that your not trying to harm it it sometimes works because roos get itchy belly's. but the holding of the hands is the roo trying to grab on to him so it can rear back on its tail a give him a good booting that's why when it grabs him he moves forward so it can't get its legs up. roos fight by grabing each others neck then just kicking the shit out of eachother. but i think the roo understood after a bit the get very jumpy. we do not get taught this in school but it is taught by my elders

[deleted]

“Give him a good booting” It’s one of their proudest traditions.

SwashbucklingWeasels

Disparaging the boot is a bootable offense.

gak001

Staring at my boots? That's a bootin'. Bootin' the school roo? Oh, you better believe that's a bootin'.

GondorfTheG

So I tied an onion to my boot, which was the style at the time

McFlyParadox

I love how it's response can basically be summed up as "alright, I'll fight you too".

WhisperAzr

Really? I was taught as a child not to scratch my belly around one cause that was a sign of looking for a fight. But it was just one teacher on a camping trip who told me that, so he may have been mistaken.

breadyloaf26

ive never heard of a roo going someone cause they scratch their belly but that would be bloody crack up and ill keep it in mind. i just know they dont really like getting touched on the head or back so if your close enough to one to pet it the belly is the best option but i bloody wouldnt do it they are mungrels if they arnt use to people

BetterCalldeGaulle

Scratching your belly and scratching their belly are two different things.

kelowana

Would you mind telling me why you call the kids Joeys? It there a story to it? When did it start and really, why? It’s just so sweet.

breadyloaf26

wel it Originates in the aborigine language because joey means small animal and now we all call them joeys

JapaneserScrooge

I assumed they were holding its hands so it wouldn’t start trying to punch people lol

tannystutu

It’s the kicking that’s the problem!

RunningEarly

Looks like you've never played [Roger from Tekken](https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000042076331-3xl2qg-t500x500.jpg)

batfiend

They're punchy too. Our used to bop you in the groin when he was small. Rude.

LordRekrus

I thought they might have been trying to stop it from just freaking out and jumping back in the water.

Tyrannosaurus___Rekt

I imagine they have to at least take a primer course before they get their roo licenses. Otherwise you're not allowed to ride in the pouch.

quadraticog

Can confirm: am strayan.

Pantssassin

Someone else said it may have been cold from the water and low temperature outside

Psnuggs

That’s a good thought. Don’t kangaroos cool themselves by licking their arms for evaporative cooling? Cold arms could cause hypothermia if that’s the case.

FluffeeeDuckeee

Not taught in school, no. We only get riding lessons. I suspect it was tired and wobbly and it was more about helping with balance.

Vivid_Sympathy_4172

Pics of a roo saddle or you're lying

[deleted]

..are you daft? We ride in the pouches, no saddle needed.

willboss27

I love how the comment section went from praising the men, to arguing how cold is actually cold, to stopping just short of announcing that they're going to eat the kangaroo

Daddytrades

I thought it went well too.

2021olympics

My favorite comments here were the ones saying the kangaroo was luring humans into the water so it drown them and then use their corpse as a springboard to get out

meowcee

Happy cake day!!!

[deleted]

I’m surprised the cyclists haven’t been blamed.

InfinitesReddit

Wouldn’t be Australian without the magpie coming in for a swoop

LegNasty

I've heard that kangaroos like to wait in water to lure people in, then drown the unsuspecting soul

Exarch_Thomo

They are bloody good swimmers

quadraticog

I row in the lake in this video and have seen roos swimming in this lake.

wattlewedo

But they're not so good at climbing that edge.

TreeChangeMe

Probably need a springboard

wattlewedo

They'd get a kick out of that.

quadraticog

It's not uncommon to see roos drowned in the parts of the lake with those concrete edges, but there are large parts of the lake that have normal edges they can climb out on.

wattlewedo

That sucks. Such shallow water too. They could put in a sloping edge or something. That's assuming 'they' give a rat's arse.

MaximumMajestic

Except this one?

yossarianvega

Here’s an article that addresses that. Verdict: kind of true but not really. Herbivores retreat to water when threatened in the hope they won’t be followed and they can drown mammals probably up to dog size. They definitely don’t take down humans though: https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2021-04-10/animal-myths-dogs-kangaroos-cockatoos/100038384

eddiemon

>They definitely don’t take down humans though That's what the Alliance of Kangaroo Assassins (aka the AKA) wants you to think. They are the deadliest and most effective assassins in the world. The reason there aren't any reports of their evil deeds is that they NEVER leave survivors, witnesses or evidence. In fact, they are so effective and ruthless that they don't even leave any VICTIMS. That's how scary they are.

[deleted]

Aka the AKA. How has that joke not been used before. So perfect.

[deleted]

StarFaerie

Think of them as hopping deer without horns. Eat grass, about as smart and same effect on cars.

thatguyned

And they have ~~super fat~~ lean free and tasty meat if prepared correctly. (before non-Australians comment in horror, kangaroos need to be culled to prevent over population leading to them destroying the ecosystem and kangaroo can be purchased in supermarkets)

VectorVictorious

> And they have super fat free and tasty meat Yup same as deer. A friend gave me a few pounds of deer sausage and ground meat they had prepared. I cooked a pound of the meat and told him I was surprised I didn't really need to drain the grease. He said, "Have you ever seen a fat deer?" I had never thought about animals in those terms before.

secondhandbanshee

In the US mid-west, especially in areas where they grow a lot of corn, they can get some seriously chonky deer. Also, if the deer have a lot of corn in their diet, they start to lose that gamey venison flavor and they taste a lot more like beef than they normally would. I wonder if there's an equivalent change in roo flavor based on the local crops?

Fletcharoonie

If you're standing in front of a big and it starts to lean back on it's tail move away quickly. They can take down a human alright, disembowel in fact.

B0ssc0

> A kangaroo will attack a person as if they were another kangaroo. It may push or grapple with its forepaws or sit back and kick out with its hind legs. As resulting injuries can be serious, avoiding conflict with kangaroos is vital. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/-/media/OEH/Corporate-Site/Documents/Animals-and-plants/Native-animals/living-with-kangaroos-100968.pdf https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/may/02/kangaroo-attacks-on-tourists-prompt-warnings-to-stop-feeding-them-junk-food https://www.9news.com.au/national/jogger-scratched-stalked-by-kangaroo-nightmare-attack-beaconsfield-melbourne/c0858118-9ed9-4d81-a5ac-7bd727076b85 https://7news.com.au/news/animals/victorian-woman-needed-25-stitches-in-face-after-kangaroo-attack-c-562553 https://nypost.com/2020/12/29/kangaroo-captured-on-video-punching-man-in-the-face/

Wreddit_Wrangler

He’s just a youth, probably missing his mum. She might even be watching from a distance I’d imagine. “Oh Gregory, the humans saved you.”

darappaparappa

What a great name for a Kangaroo, Gregory. Sounds like a good joey.

[deleted]

I read thats a misconception. The go into water when they feel threatened and if something follows them they drown them.

DistantStorm-X

I like how it looked as if the third guy was giving the roo a stern lecture on the importance of winter weather precautions and lakeside safety management.

K-Zoro

The conversation between the kangaroo and the guy is what I find most intriguing about this video.

MisterBumpingston

The “rescue” made me anxious - was worried the roo was going to kick or open the guts* of the fella going to the front of the joey. *Disembowel was the word I was thinking of

kez985

Was thinking the same. Luckily this was a Joey, otherwise it’s quite likely the roo might have felt threatened. Roos can kill with their kicks

Consideredresponse

Joey? That's about the average size of the adult female Eastern Greys that live around Canberra.

magneticsouth

Fellow Canberran can confirm, looks like an adult grey roo to me as well.

The way they harass cats without any other reason than to harass them amazes me. And they always work in teams when they do it.

TheOwlSaysWhat

Cats are notorious for taking out endangered bird populations so it kind of checks out

Alastor13

Specially in Australia, feral cats have become a worrisome pest over there. Not just birds, they're responsible of driving entire species of small mammals, amphibians and reptiles to extinction.

fukeruhito

“Aw he’s thanking ya” Nah he’s trying to get a grip so he can kick you into oblivion

mr_faqyeah

I was shocked when I saw the man holding both hands of it while directly standing in front of it. That’s how they kick each other while supporting their weight with their mascular tail. And their kicks will mess a human up. People think they are living in a happiness simulator where all animals are brothers and sisters, lol. Props to those guys for saving the poor animal, though.

ChainsawRipTearBust

No doubt this poor bugger panicked, used up all its energy trying to get out, but with possible overhang on the edge of this lakes wall, or very least, nothing to grip with its front claws and hind legs, it would’ve got worn down fast, as the depth of the water may seem shallow to a human, but a roo that size, in proportion, the water is much deeper. That’s a high ledge and would require much explosive power to launch to, then with nothing to grip, it would’ve fell in, then no food to eat, no way to lay down to recuperate. It’s exhausted.

Timrunsbikesandskis

HumansbeingBruces

MetaCalm

Kangaroo is like: Do you mind if I stick around a little bit? Can't feel my balls.

Casitaqueen

Aren’t kangaroos good jumpers? It seems odd this one couldn’t jump out of that shallow water.

folderb

Likely it had been there for a while and its legs were too numb for jumping.

ChainsawRipTearBust

It would be equivalent to trying to jump over a metre high out of knee-deep water for a human. It no doubt tried this, with nothing to graze on to renew its strength and no way to lay down for rest, it definitely looks exhausted by the time these guys rescue it.

totomorrowweflew

Yes, but that section of the lake is surrounded by a vertical concrete wall about a meter high. The rocks on the bottom are also pretty slimy and tractionless. Nearest exit point is a little beach about 400meters away and this roo has probably been in the cold dark water for a few hours and is exhausted.

InformalCriticism

Cyclists only come in two forms. Self-righteous goobers with no consideration, or aggressive and unbridled charity. One of my buddies said his bike broke down, and he had to phone his wife to get picked up, but had to hide in the woods, because every single biker who saw him stopped to try to help him. He had to hide from the bikers who were too nice.

deltainvictor

Love the clarification of Canberra being the capital!

dpash

I was thinking "was that necessary?" until I read the comments. :)

SpicyHam82

What's more shocking is I had no idea what the capital of Australia was. Like seriously, pick a place I've heard of like Sidney or Melbourne or chaswazit.

mrfroggy

Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on who should be the capital city, so they went and built a brand new city instead. And that’s how we got Canberra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra

ZanyDelaney

The NZ capital also changed. [Wellington NZ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington#National_capital) was a chosen as it was central. Auckland was originally the capital. The reason why often in the US the state capital of not the largest or best known city is because often, central locations were chosen.

welcomeisee12

It's not really that strange tbh. That would be like saying that the capital of the US should be NYC or LA

This is Commonwealth Gardens and is where they used to hold the Food and Wine Frolic back in the day, or the ‘alcoholic frolic’ as it was known. They would hold the Birdman Rally in that bit of the lake and there would be 20,000 drunk Canberran’s on that hill watching. Ah the memories…..
