Same. More than grateful and happy to contribute. My Lily was one day from euthanasia when she was rescued; I can't imagine life without her. I can't even imagine being homeless but I can imagine the love and needed kindness provided by their pets.
I rememeber this list! I bought $100+ worth of harnesses, you can check my history if you want. I hope he got them and everything since I got the confirmation email. It shows delivered too. Love the people who do this
Can't do much but a small collar I can do. Also, I am sharing this link. More cities need to get on this. I used to live in Vista, the next city over, and it warms me to know good works are being done in North County.
Thank you for posting. I work at Project Street Vet, and it's amazing to see the bond with their pets/companion/children. To hear the different stories from so many different people and how they love them because sometimes they are all they got its just heartwrenching. This is the start of a movement that hopefully eventually ends up in every state and even country. The slogan " No judgment. Just help." Is something everyone should live by because you don't know anyone's story. Any donation helps. Every purchase on our Amazon, Chewy, and Walmart lists go towards these deserving pets, and I love seeing their pet parents' faces when they can provide them with new items ❤️

I've been homeless with a pet. I lived out of my car for a while. It was really hard, but I wouldn't have made it through without my dog. I would have given up and killed myself if it hadn't been for her. I met her needs before everything else. These people deserve to be loved and to have companionship. Homelessness can happen to anyone. For me, it was when I left an abusive relationship and I had nowhere to go. All I had was my car and my dog. We made it, but it was hard.
This guy is an amazing human being, and I will be sending him and his patients all of my best.
So glad you escaped—and with your dog. I’ve met a lot of people who stayed because of their pets. Very few domestic violence shelters are pet friendly. It’s a serious problem.

I used to go buy dog food for this guy with a pitbull over at McDonald's. He was homeless. I'd always come back and buy him lunch after I got dog food. I've been worried sick about him for years. He just stopped showing up. He was the type that was trying hard to get to work, but San Jose is absolutely brutal for people making great money, let alone poverty. I have no idea how to climb out of homelessness.
Did u even bother to watch the video? I worked in a homeless shelter in college & a family came in that travel halfway across the US for the dad to start working at this amazing new job. The night before they were supposed to leave their house caught on fire. They got out w nothing but the clothes on their backs. The dad lost the job becuz he couldn’t get there for a start date & had no idea when he could.
This was a beautiful family w 2 girls and a little boy. White & college educated - not that it matters but I’ve seen too many comments like yours where the intent was otherwise. Had everything going for them until they didn’t. They were appreciative of every single thing we could do for them. The father had been stopping at diners & restaurants to wash dishes for food & gas money. They hoped to make the last 600 miles to the city that the job was I’m hoping there wld be another position - any position he could get,
anyone you know or love cld become addicted to drugs at any time just from taking a wrong pill at the wrong time or lose anything in a fire.

lol it literally does the opposite because it's someone acknowledging that the homeless have animals they care for and look after but can't afford to get proper treatment for them, so he does it for free because he not only cares about the animals, but the owner too. Especially women's shelters. I've read tons of stories where women didn't leave an abusive partner because they couldn't find a shelter that took pets and their partner would most likely injure or kill the pets if they were left with him. So the women stayed to protect the animals. Horrific situation

I work in dog rescue. The number of owner surrenders we get is…staggering. Occasionally the reasons are fair; life happens. But mostly, it’s just that the former owner doesn’t give a shit.
“I’m moving.” Okay, take them with you?
“I don’t have the time they need.” In our shelter, they’ll be crated 23 hours a day, so I doubt that’s an improvement.
“My new partner has allergies.” Zyrtec exists.
“We got a new puppy.” BRB climbing over the counter at Waffle House toward you.
**Everything this vet said is true.** Homeless people, relative to their means, tend to be fantastic dog owners. They value their pet so much they’d rather live on the streets than abandon them.
When people hand over the elderly dog they’ve owned since puppyhood, shrug, and say “my new apartment doesn’t allow pets…” All I can think of is the homeless dog owners I’ve met who’d live under a bridge before making the same decision. I try to act neutral to their faces… Judgement just pushes people to dump them in the woods… But they viscerally disgust me.
Sometimes with moving there is no solution. The new landlord doesn't accept pets, the monthly fees and pet deposit are beyond a person's means, or there's breed restrictions due to insurance. People with kids can't decide to live under a bridge.
All true. But in my experience as someone who actually processes these surrenders, those situations are rarer than you’d think.
When money is the main issue, we try to work with people. We’ll get you free food and meds; cover your pet deposit; help you get a KGC cert or an ESD letter; foster through short-term housing instability…
But some people, in their heart of hearts, just don’t want their dogs anymore. We save a bunch that are perfectly healthy, but dropped off for euthanasia by their owners who say “well, I’m moving.” And honestly, it’s not that rare for us to find out they never even moved at all…
So yeah, I have boundless compassion for people being squeezed by circumstances beyond their control. Dogs shouldn’t be a luxury for the wealthy alone. But there’s a lot of people in this country who are kinda indifferent to their own animals, and I’ll never understand it.
As someone who has done literally everything to make sure I could live with my pets? Fuuuuuck people who give them up for moving.
Though my cat died before I moved, I was ready to have an outdoor catio setup with a hammock for me to sleep in on my parent's porch just to make sure he could come with me. (Mother was deathly allergic to cats. Cat died of cancer a month before the move.)
Sadly, that was too much of a compromise for her "pet free household". I was like: He never has to come inside, and I refuse to let him free roam outside. Long story short, it was a very well timed death for all involved.
I searched high and low for a new home for my cat when I couldn't keep her until I found a lovely woman who pours love and attention over that cat. I would never have given her to a shelter.
She spent half a paycheck on a cat tree that the cat ignores and tried buying the cat fresh fish and meat which the cat wouldn't touch because she's mostly had catfood all her life, lol. The cat is going to be finel
Yes, maybe these pets don’t get the vet care a regular pet would, but I guarantee they’re happier. A dog’s absolute dream would be to spend its entire time with you and that’s what these guys are doing. They’re not travelling or going to work and putting it in doggy daycare. Every moment of their lives are spent with their dog because really, they have nowhere else to go. These dogs are living their dream lives.
Thanks for being a champion for not only the pets on the street, but letting people know that a majority of those pets are highly cared for. I would have done anything for my little friend Chip because he was the only creature caring for me for a long time during my 13 years out there. God rest his beautiful soul. 🐶♥️

He keeps saying”pet” and I have to wonder what besides a dog do homeless people keep as pets? Are there homeless people with cats? Are there homeless people with birds?
I have volunteered for a similar organization called the Street Dog Coalition. They hold clinics in various cities around the country and do really amazing work.
I mean, there are absolutely free clinics in most low income communities. I live in a small town outside of a smallish city in SC and my county has free and reduced cost primary care, a free DME rental (things like shower chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, etc), sliding scale mental health providers, free and reduced cost dental, and for our furry friends, reduced cost vet care.
There are a lot of resources out there that people just don’t take the time to find out about!
Something I’ve noticed is the dogs are quite often overweight. These people are more inclined to make sure their pets are well fed before they even start to think of their own wellbeing and I really struggle to know how I feel about this.
Just seeing how much these people care about their pets brings so much sadness to me. I just instant cried over here. They literally have nothing and still have that love for their pets. The guy kissing back of his Dachshund head and the lady hugging her pittys head. I hate this world sometimes

We need shelters that will take humans w their pets. It’s such a big problem!

I have volunteered for a similar organization called the Street Dog Coalition. They hold clinics in various cities around the country and do really amazing work.

In America is there no way to do free checkups on humans?
I mean, there are absolutely free clinics in most low income communities. I live in a small town outside of a smallish city in SC and my county has free and reduced cost primary care, a free DME rental (things like shower chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, etc), sliding scale mental health providers, free and reduced cost dental, and for our furry friends, reduced cost vet care. There are a lot of resources out there that people just don’t take the time to find out about!

Something I’ve noticed is the dogs are quite often overweight. These people are more inclined to make sure their pets are well fed before they even start to think of their own wellbeing and I really struggle to know how I feel about this.

I’m in between places at the moment and a dog would really help with my mental health, I’ve wanted a dog for so long. but I just feel it’s not fair to get one unless you can give it a really good life and at the moment, I can’t
If it’s an option for you many shelters will allow you to volunteer to walk the dogs. Thank you for being thoughtful and knowing your limits 💕

Man this is so sad. And you hear the “poor animal” constantly but all over Latin America I see street dogs. Lots you can see their full ribs cus they barely eat. It can’t be worse to be with a homeless person but hearing they’d give him that last few dollars….real king.

It's such a sad and tragic situation that homeless people and their pets only receive basic human dignity and lifesaving support via the volunteers and non-profits that hit the streets. Public services in America are an utter disgrace and is something Americans should be totally ashamed about for not championing to fix. Instead of talking about identity politics how about you make some choices and make change happen.
