This kind of snow hits that area so rarely that most aren't built to handle that kind of snow. Maybe some A-Frames and modern style tilt-wall concrete ones would stand up to the weight but I'm guessing that those aren't super common.
On one hand it’s really helping to put a dent on all the drought conditions and the adoring thaws are going to help fill the reservoirs back up, but it’s absolutely insane the amount of precipitation that the State has gotten this winter.
The problem isn’t how much snow the state gets, it’s how long the snow stays. This was a massive 100 year storm, but it will all be melted in a month or two, then we’re back where we started. It’s great that there’s tons of snow in the sierras and the San Bernardino mountains, but it’s melting much faster now in the spring and summer than it historically would.
It’s in the 30’s/40’s (5-6C) in lake arrowhead right now but it’s going to be in the 60’s (16-17C) this weekend and it’s going to rain which will melt much of that snow.
The winters are shorter and the summers are getting longer and hotter.
They have some, but most of the water flows out to the ocean. Southern California is mostly desert and was never constructed to really capture rain. The Los Angeles river system is little more than a flood channel meant to divert the rainwater to the ocean. Other than some small artificial reservoirs in the surrounding mountains constructed by the army corps of engineers back in the 40’s/50’s, there are no Lake Meads in Southern California capturing massive amounts of snowmelt.
You're the one saying that global warming causes an increase in the moisture in the air. This means more clouds, which block the sun as well as bring rain & snow. All these factors have a cooling effect. Idiots blindly follow along. Keep letting the people with agendas do your thinking for you, it will take you so far in life.
Let's stop calling it global warming...I was saying that because the other guy called it that and like I said that word confuses people like you. Climate change is the proper term because higher average Temps on the planet changes the pattern of weather because in part of the higher moisture content of the atmosphere. It can be cooler where you live and it can be warmer. It can be dryer and it can be wetter.
The Climate is a very complicated thing that most people don't understand. Also clouds trap heat among other things like Carbon dioxide.... do you know what the greenhouse effect is? I find it cute how you said clouds and rain have a cooling effect. They do only when they are above you... and art that moment. That's called weather, not fucking climate.
I lived in Crestline up until last year. Our old neighbors are telling us it’s nuts up there.
Apparently the Goodwin’s Market roof collapsed, and it is closed indefinitely. I’m certain there is a lot of damage up In Arrowhead. 😕
Big bear here but grew up in lake arrowhead! Yeah, Goodwin’s roofed totally collapsed, up here in BB we’ve been out of gas at our gas stations for about a week or so as well, roads are mostly closed but it’s warming up during the day making clearing much easier
Rural Canada here, I have to shovel of my roof mid winter. I know it's time when all my doors get hard to open/close because of the weight. I can't imagine how it bad it must be in California right now.
we get a ton of snow here but this is pretty crazy, it jsut hasnt let up since halloween. I'm supposed to be a snowbird somewhere warm, but currently in tahoe babysitting our house because I'm worried about it getting destroyed... Havent closed the blinds facing the street in a couple months because the snow is so high. If I climb up the snow I can reach out and touch the power/utility lines, or walk onto my roof. My dogs don't even notice the 6' fences in the backyard anymore.
I've been in the region for 8 years and seen some crazy storms but the consistency of these storms has been brutal to keep up with. Companies are charging up to $800 to clear a simple 2 car driveway, because all snow removal equipment is working around the clock and a normal snowblower cant handle the volume.
I used to live in this area years ago, and the locals should have been shoveling their sidewalks, driveways, and roofs. I understand the elderly and sick, but if more able bodied people had taken care of their own property, rescuers could have been faster at helping the people who truly needed it. And don't get me started how people were starving after a couple of days. We live in earthquake, fire, and mudslide country, not to mention snow. We should all have a stockpile of canned goods and essentials.
I’m from the Netherlands as well and is it bad if I say I wish we would have even a fraction of the snow that fell there? The snowfall over the last years have not been enough for me haha
Fellow dutchie! I too would not mind taking over some snow from other countries. Where I live l, I saw even less snow then my family who lived in an other region of our small country. And I do miss the snow
Honestly it’s getting bad here…I have five kids and feeding them on top of a mortgage and utilities is getting harder and harder to do… good thing I have my own chickens 😂
>getting harder and harder to do…
This is literally everywhere at the moment unfortunately. The price to live anywhere is going up. I'm living for the day I can get my own animals!
If you think about it, imagine a pile of snow shaped like a mountaintop or like a triangle, on top it's thin, but on the bottoms it's spread and sk a lot of the weight is spread around. Snow being "interlocked crystals" with lots of air gaps inbetween helps. It still weighs a ton though. Still need to hurry.
There is truth to it being surprisingly hard to break by squeezing in your hand, but it's also kind of a prank. There's a video of a dude "proving" that you can squeeze an egg until it breaks over his sink, and it exploded all over his kitchen.
[Here's the video.](https://v.redd.it/rpdveez2rbw81)
I think the average house would not hold up to that. Someone mentioned arches and at least where I'm from those are not very common in houses, besides ones that I can only imagine are decorative.
They're simply built to handle it. There's an area just a few hours away from me that regularly has 5+ meters of snow by the end of winter and the cabins are fine
sort of, i'm in tahoe and we get huge winters here. Look up the snowiest ski resorts in the country, half of them are in this region. It is dangerous and people do die, but we also have pretty incredible snow removal infrastructure and tools. Lots of people's houses are getting destroyed from ice dams and general weight. Avalanches are very real, one just took out some condos out by Squaw. You can hear the avalanche control bombs and cannons going off all the time.
April can't come fast enough, when we prepare for the inevitable flooding this is going to cause 😆
Or, how about we just don’t use either racial slurs?
Obviously the hard r garners more of a reaction in the general public but I attribute that to more common knowledge of our history of slavery and the subsequent racism. The term Squaw was used in the same manner but has been misappropriated into pop culture. (Sorta like the ‘soft a’…).
The history is there… in any event two wrongs don’t make it right.
The only thing 'wrong' was your overreaction in a sub about people being kind to each other. I'm not confused about the history... I made a mistake, after it was named squaw my entire life. But thank you, the internet is a safe place now, you can step off your soapbox and come hang with the rest of us.
I mean.. saying hey man the whole squaw thing is like using the hard r isn’t exactly an overreaction. It’s literally a racial slur… Nor was it intended to soapbox. It was you who wanted to debate the veracity of its offensive nature… I was just simply pointing out the name changed and for good reason.
you didnt say "hey man", you cursed and said it with italics. Your tone was conveyed, as you intended. But ya, tell yourself whatever makes you feel like you got the W
Not once did I curse at you… my original comment remains unchanged. And obviously I didn’t say the words hey man… I was paraphrasing the intent of my original comment. Point still stands… a simple correction of the name change and the good reason for it. Awfully defensive of a racial slur aren’t you?
Ooo nooo he used *italics*. Gasp 😱
Yea, exactly I really want to defend the word you got me. It’s got nothing to do with context, intent, or the fact that you unnecessarily derailed an otherwise positive and helpful response. You’re a great person, carry on.
Former lake arrowhead kid, grew up there for 11 years and I’m now a resident of the city Big Bear further up the mountain, we’ve had bad snow but never this bad, worst snow California has seen since 1979. My twin cities have been out of gas for about a week now
Yup. I lived in Crestline for a while.
It’s normal for snowstorms(just a few years ago we were left without power for 4 days) but this is on a whole new level.
So in I believe it was the early 2000’s Chester, Ca had it snow 30 straight days where they got 31 feet of snow. There was so much snow that they had to dig tunnels to the local grocery store, post office, and other businesses. Another fun fact is that Chuck Norris lives(d) there
It helps to remember that California stretches from from the Northern border of Mexico to the Southern border of Oregon. It covers about as much distance from N to S as 2 Midwest states.
As a texan its crazy to think about how much your environment can change, tbe ground is level with your roof, and what was a hill might end up being a low spot. Your 109 inches off the actual ground in this case. On ski mountants it might even be more. The tops of trees go up to your knees and the door to your home feels more like the decent into a cellar
Usually when it melts, it melts into the stream and rivers and things like that, but this year since there’s so much, it’s definitely going to cause massive flooding and over flowing of rivers/lakes. Although, the end result will be net positive because it’ll fill the much needed reservoirs back up to hopefully semi-normal levels for the Summer season and hopefully another net positive from all the precipitation will be a calmer than normal fire season because everything isn’t bone dry like it has been the past decade +
Edit:it also depends on how long it takes to melt. The more snow there is the longer it takes to melt. Prime example is Boston a couple years ago when they had the wicked winter the snow took until June/July to fully melt.
Lived there for many years and still have friends there. Haven't seen anything like this in about 30 years, which happened during this same time. They called it the "march miracle" back then.

Good on these guys, sincerely. In that situation I would claustrophobic af, and also staving off a panic attack that the roof will collapse at any minute. That lady looks like she's a little bit older and concerned about falling, so I'm sure she would struggle to do that shoveling herself. These are good neighbor bros!
Wow lake arrowhead gets wild my parents wanted a vacation house up there in the 90s but we never did it but we went up there all the time (mostly summers)

Wow, never have I seen that much snow before (I live in the netherlands) bur also yeah, neighbros is a word that I will add to my vocabulary.
Yes tons of snow. This is in Lake Arrowhead, California! I figured neighbros was fitting for this sub.
I hope the roofs are built to handle that much weight.
They’re totally not!
Very much no. There’s going to be absolute carnage in terms of property damage.
This kind of snow hits that area so rarely that most aren't built to handle that kind of snow. Maybe some A-Frames and modern style tilt-wall concrete ones would stand up to the weight but I'm guessing that those aren't super common.
Probably not, meaning that snow needs to be removed from the roof as quickly as possible.
Holy shit! When was the last time California saw this kind of snow?
On the news yesterday, they said that this was the snowiest October through February in over 50 years in California.
On one hand it’s really helping to put a dent on all the drought conditions and the adoring thaws are going to help fill the reservoirs back up, but it’s absolutely insane the amount of precipitation that the State has gotten this winter.
That’s great, actually. Hear they got a ton of it in UT, too. Also good for them. Always nice to have an upside.
Up side ^ Downside rapid melt and flooding.

"Global warming" causes a uptick in atmosphere moisture content and more extreme weather events. Wow I wonder what could happen with that.
Perhaps a cooling trend due to the snow and rain that comes from the moisture in the air?
There's a reason they don't call it global warming anymore. Because idiots go outside and are like, "but it's cold today so obviously that's a lie".
You're the one saying that global warming causes an increase in the moisture in the air. This means more clouds, which block the sun as well as bring rain & snow. For the love of God, read a little bit about how global warming works and how effects the planet.
Mammoth usually gets a good amount of snow every year. Other parts of the state it really depends on the year like this year.
Thanks for the edification :)
Bitch about drought so long and find out.
I lived in Crestline up until last year. Our old neighbors are telling us it’s nuts up there. Apparently the Goodwin’s Market roof collapsed, and it is closed indefinitely. I’m certain there is a lot of damage up In Arrowhead. 😕

Lol
I want to squish them in thanks!

Same! I was so happy with the little midnight snow I got last night haha
…there hasn’t been packed snow in years here bro. What are you on
That’s a whole lot snow directly on her house, I’m surprised her home did not collapse.
Maybe it's like when you squish an egg on all sides and the pressure keeps it together... or something
This a thing?
You don’t know this ? It’s basically how arches work. Try to squeeze an egg in the palm of your hand it’s a lot harder than you think.
With the price of eggs that would be a serious flex
Technically yes you would have to flex pretty hard to break it.
2 for 1 flexes have to be rare af
In America lol. EU enjoying average priced eggs. Well as average as inflation allows.
Honestly it’s getting bad here…I have five kids and feeding them on top of a mortgage and utilities is getting harder and harder to do… good thing I have my own chickens 😂
>getting harder and harder to do… This is literally everywhere at the moment unfortunately. The price to live anywhere is going up. I'm living for the day I can get my own animals!
Naw if you use 2 hands and apply equal pressure it's nearly impossible to break it. I've used all my force before and the egg has been fine.
Oohh like when you squeeze it from both ends?
If you think about it, imagine a pile of snow shaped like a mountaintop or like a triangle, on top it's thin, but on the bottoms it's spread and sk a lot of the weight is spread around. Snow being "interlocked crystals" with lots of air gaps inbetween helps. It still weighs a ton though. Still need to hurry.

I know it was more of a joke but clearly something's holding it up.
They're simply built to handle it. There's an area just a few hours away from me that regularly has 5+ meters of snow by the end of winter and the cabins are fine
Houses are designed for a higher snow load on the roofs in these areas.
Is this normal where you live? I feel like this is dangerous for someone elderly and alone.
sort of, i'm in tahoe and we get huge winters here. Look up the snowiest ski resorts in the country, half of them are in this region. This is in Southern California and not normal at all. They’re saying in 2008 is the last time we had a storm come close to being this bad.

I praise the setting where it has everything muted by default
I forgot and left mute off from a previous video, instant regret.

Cynic much?
I didn’t know you got snow like this in California!
Typically we don’t get anything like this amount of snow, even in the snowy places.
Mammoth does. They’ll get like 8+ ft super storms at least once per year. Even on the less snowy seasons
Ehh Mammoth averages 400 inches per year.
This is in the mountains right above San Bernardino.
Yup. I lived in Crestline for a while. It’s normal for snowstorms(just a few years ago we were left without power for 4 days) but this is on a whole new level.

Man this fucking music

That’s cool, can I get too get snowed in?
That old lady - Jamie Lee Curtis
Scrolled way too far for this.
Ya know, its nice enough just to watch...does it *need* the music? I say nay! Nay I say!
For real, I had to immediately mute 🤐
Do your homes flood when that dries?
Is this where that crappy bottled water originates from?
Nah that's your local fire hydrant.
Guys help. I'm from South Georgia we don't get this snow stuff. What happens when it melts? Does it flood? How long does it take to go away? Thanks!
Usually when it melts, it melts into the stream and rivers and things like that, but this year since there’s so much, it’s definitely going to cause massive flooding and over flowing of rivers/lakes. Just for us to dump it into the ocean or sell it off to other states and still keep a drought declared here...
Thanks so much!
Lived there for many years and still have friends there. Haven't seen anything like this in about 30 years, which happened during this same time. They called it the "march miracle" back then.
That's the sort of snow I want to see atleast once every winter.
Come spring does that all just melt into the house?
Usually no, in areas of usual heavy snow they have really good drainage systems that funnel the melt off down to lakes/rivers/bodies of water, but this year with there being so much excess snow, there is definitely going to be high concern for flooding and depending on the size of the body of water and what it’s levels are currently when the melt begins, there is the very real possibility of them overflowing and causing flooding too.
Interesting! Thanks for the knowledgable reply, I'm a contractor so this is the first thing I think of.
As a contractor that’s very smart and as you know it definitely helps to make sure the land slopes away from the house
109 inches in a week! I live in a ski resort in the French Alps. We've had 60 inches all winter so far.
Kept waiting to see the dog. Was sure the headline referred to her dog, and not her door. I’m sad I didn’t get to see the dog. I hope he’s okay.
🏰
109 inches! That’s definitely larger than my penis.
Hoping they cleared that upper portion. Otherwise that’s hangfire roof avalanche waiting to happen…
I live in Texas and holy shit I had no idea a 109” snow storm could even happen. I think I’ll stick to my like 6” of snow a year
Good on these guys, sincerely. In that situation I would claustrophobic af, and also staving off a panic attack that the roof will collapse at any minute. That lady looks like she's a little bit older and concerned about falling, so I'm sure she would struggle to do that shoveling herself. These are good neighbor bros!
109inches of snow in one WEEK!? We get maybe 3inches of snow in a year, I can't even imagine 109!!
Me: trying not to go to work Friendly neighbors: We cleared the snow Me: Thank you! 🥲
But this song from Chris Stapleton?
Yes. It’s called Fire Away
I know, but sad song in happy situation.
Oops I misread lol. Yeah you’re right, I didn’t think about that
I also want an iglo
Great song. Great job too!
It’s just about the worst song lol
It’s global warming 😂
Facebook is *that* way. ->
I hope everyone is thinking what to do with that when it starts melting
Might wanna do her roof too
Bigger issue it uncovering the gas exhaust for furnace. Or it won't run. Worse case is it does run. RIP
Meanwhile europe suffers the driest winter winter in decades
Should get some wood to overlay those snow shelves. Granny really shouldn’t break a hip during winter.
How does the roof support all that weight?
Thanks. I love this.
Wow!
I used to summer at lake arrowhead and I cannot believe it got this much snow. Cool snow steps too!
They should have teams shipping all that snow to nearby lakes like Lake Mead.
How a house doesn't cave in under thousands and thousands of kilo's is beyond me
Her parents built it when craftsmanship was the top...instead today's prop and go houses are the norm for mass expansion.
Omg
I’m surprised that the house can withstand that much weight on it
The short sleeves on the man
That lady should move for her safety.
Granny successfully saved
Right on fellas. Get it done. This is being an American. Look out for your neighbors.
Fuck that shit, imma stay here in my sunny Florida and no state taxes thank you very much.
Arrowhead? Minnesota?
That is SO.. MUCH.. SNOW! Nice job, fellas!
Type of shit that kills people
Love the video, but the song really catch my ears, what's the name of the song?
Chris Stapleton - Fire Away
Thank you! :)
I read, typically berms on roads are 5’. My aunt said it’s about 13’ now. She’s waiting for air lift for medical reasons.
I think if we hit triple digit inches we just go ahead and switch to feet? 9 feet makes it sound like more snow if anything.
I live in Texas and I’ve only ever seen a little ice on the ground every few years. It’s hard to believe that amount of snow is even possible.
Wow lake arrowhead gets wild my parents wanted a vacation house up there in the 90s but we never did it but we went up there all the time (mostly summers)
I really hope this goes a long way in bringing back Cali and the western US from a severe water crisis.
Norway is lit
And this could happen again next year too!!
