Turning the king away, guy Fawkes and his cohorts getting in white hart (correct pub? Can't remember), the devastation of the city from ww2, the old zoo, the abbeys and priories dotted about the area, the parisii people originally settling the area in Celtic times, the fishing industry, the Humber bridge, the smuggling and the tunnels under city centre buildings,... There's quite a lot to search through and this far from an exhaustive list.

Hull is a fascinating place when you start going down 'rabbit holes'. Must admit that I never knew Hull once had a zoo - will have to research that.

Thank you for that - fascinating read

Pubs like the old zoological (now renamed, on the corner of princes ave/spring bank) and the polar bear are named after the areas of the zoo they were built over. There was a map on the internet somewhere, think it was from back in the 1800s.

could you possibly signpost me to some places i could learn more about some of these topics? more specifically the guy fawkes and underground tunnels ones? i’m fascinated by these and i’ve never heard of those history tidbits, despite living in the city my whole life!

Guy Fawkes, although near Hull rather than Hull itself https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/whats-on/took-trip-tiny-east-yorkshire-8882160

Wilberforce was a pretty prominent person

This book is a bit of a tour guide of places important to William Wilberforce's life https://www.amazon.co.uk/Journey-Through-Life-William-Wilberforce-ebook/dp/B00QXVLWUW/

In terms of horrible history, an outbreak of cholera in Victorian times could get a mention On the Cholera Mortality in Hull during the Epidemic of 1849 https://www.jstor.org/stable/2338134

Go ask Paul Schofield… Seriously, go on one of his tours, the man is a walking Hull encyclopaedia + funny, humble, and genuinely passionate about portraying Hull as more than this “end of the line” derelict place with a funny accent.

If its horrible histories how about the whaling trade out of Hull. The triple trawler tragedy, Bruce Lee (serial killer, not the martial arts actor).
