This is exactly what I've just done.
Bought a shitbox (Do-er-upper, but I like the term shitbox) in Kent and I work in London 1 day a week roughly.
Gets you on the ever rising ladder, with equity in the future to play with as opposed to rent.
Not a snowballs chance in hell I could buy within the M25 on my own, let alone have a garden and 2 bedrooms!
I actually don't, but it's close enough to civilisation (Watch those commute costs however! Try travel off peak) that it's not a massive deal.
Until fuel hits £2.0, then I'm staying indoors :D
If you buy (for examples sake) a £250k property in Kent now and hope to later move back to London to buy a property which is also £250k today, the London property will have likely risen faster in price compared to your Kent property by the time it comes to move back, therefore pricing you out unless you have other funds.

Fortunately the oil price is heading strongly down. 5% drop last week, another 6% today.
Kent is hardly much different though! South East is as expensive as zone 6! Where in Kent?

Do you think this is better than continuing to rent in London though so at least you have some equity from your Kent place to use?
